How can I re-start when stuck on apple logo/spinning gear page for HOURS???

I uploaded 12 updates at once and when I went to restart, it became stuck on the page with the apple logo and spinning gear. Left it for hours and hours but no change. I have removed the battery and re-powered. I've also tried to use the install Disc 1... Urgh! Any solutions?

If you are uploading anything it should not affect your machine unless your computer coincidentally failed while doing so. I am going to assume you mean you downloaded 12 updates.
I also assume you mean that when trying to start it after having removed and the replaced all sources of power it still will only get as far as the apple logo with spinning gear.
Are you holding the C key while starting it with the install DVD inserted? That should cause it to boot from the DVD after which you can use Disk Utility to repair the disk or to re-install the OS if needed.

Try the remaining items of:
- iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
- Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode

- If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
- Try another cable
- Try on another computer
- If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

IMac stuck on Apple Logo + Spinning gear

I was having some pretty serious problems with my iMac, so I booted off the install CD and ran permission repair and disk repair. Everything seems to be OK now (SMART dhows "verified"), except that I cannot start from the hard drive. The iMac knows it's there and I can select it as startup disk (using either "option" startup or from within the install CD). I have no idea why it won't boot tho. The only think I can think is that I accidentally had my Leopard upgrade disk in once (the iMac came with Leopard) and double-clicked "install." I turned the iMac off before it booted though, so I would assume no harm done.
Any help? It's getting frustrating.
And yes, I've restarted with everything unplugged and have reset the PRAM.
EDIT: Restarted in Verbose mode and got a "disk0s2: I/O error" followed by some "Level 3" comments.

Do you have a backup?
You stated; "I turned the iMac off before it booted though, so I would assume no harm done.
Shutting the computer off in the middle of an install has most likely totally corrupted your system.
You might try an Archive & Install. If this procedure can find enough of the system remaining it might be able to salvage a system for you.
If that fails then about your only other alternative is an Erase & Install. If you have no backup, this will cause you to lose everything.

Go to ITunes
Click on your Device
Click on Summary tab
Click on Restore

MacBook start up stuck on Apple Logo...what is wrong, how do I fix it?

My friend has a new MacBook and when he starts it up, the apple logo appears in front of the white background as normal, but it just stays there...the black circular bars just spin and spin. He said this goes on indefinitely and at least over an hour. He also said at times he would get that dreaded question mark icon during boot-up, but then it would change to the Apple Logo and boot as normal from there on out. I tried shutting down and rebooting myself to no avail. Anyone know what this is or have any advice on what to do? Thanks!

Try using Disk Utility to do a Disk Repair, as shown in this link, while booted up on your install disk.
You could have some directory corruption. Let us know what errors Disk Utility reports and if DU was able to repair them.

IMac G5 start up stuck on Apple Logo

My iMac doesn't start up all the way. I hear the bong then the Apple logo shows up with the spinning dial and that's as far as I get. I've tried leaving it on for awhile but all that happens is that the fans start to run and I have to shut it down using the power button. The computer does fall under the
Extended Repair Program so I've already taken it in and had the power supply and logic board replaced hoping that it would solve the problem but it didn't (and I didn't have my computer for two and a half weeks). It worked okay for two weeks and then it wouldn't boot up again. Since then I've tried resetting the PRAMS and the SMU. I've also tried to run the hardware check from the OS CD and it fails before I can get any results and all repairs it tries to do also fail. I've even done an erase and install of the OS which got the computer running again for two weeks and then it won't start up again. I bought the iMac "used" so I'm trying to avoid having to pay for repairs if I can (forget about deep pockets because I don't have any at all right now). Does anyone know if this sounds more like a harddrive problem or is there another way for me to test the hardware? I'm writing this on my VERY reliable G3 but I miss my G5 so please help.

Sorry I haven't posted for the last couple of days. I will take the computer back to the store tomorrow. I just wanted to try to find another way to test it before I took it in because if doesn't relate to the power supply or the logic board I'll have to pay Apple $85 just for diagnosing the problem (the 90 day warrenty on used Macs doesn't apply to be because I bought it from the prior owner and not Apple). I should have also said, in my original posting, that the other problems the computer had before I took it in the first time (i.e.-falling asleep, loud fans, distorted picture) have gone away since the new parts were put in and those symptoms were listed over and over again as being related to the power supply issue. I didn't notice anyone posting anything like my problem as an symptom of the power supply recall. I know I'm reaching for some magical answer but I thought I'd try. I'll let you know how it goes.

It's now stuck on the apple logo with a spinning wheel underneath.. It won't boot to cd so I can't get into disc utility, I've tried an smc and pram reset but still got nothing..
Got a feeling it's a HDD issue but am hoping not..

Mac partiton not starting up, stuck on Apple logo.

I am using a mid-2012 MacBook pro. I was using Yosemite when it started having issues.
For the past few months I would have a grey loading bar on startup that would go away in a minute or less. This past week my Mac started running incredibly slow, freezing on every window. I tried to install updates in hopes it would fix it. However, after updating it would take minutes to boot, then it stopped booting.
I tried RAM, hardware resets. Everything. I tried to reinstall Mountain Lion, now after the download/install all I have is the Apple logo and the cursor.
However, the Windows partition works totally fine..
Any ideas?

Unfortunately, pages on the iPad does not support editing styles. The mac version is an extremely powerful piece of software (I know someone who has recently completed their PhD thesis in it), but the iPad version has only a fraction of the features.
The only word processor for the iPad I'm aware of that fully provides support for styles is UX Write - see http://www.uxproductivity.com (disclaimer: I've been involved with the development of this app). Reluctant as I am to contradict Viking OS X, yes it is possible.
This is for Yosemite, it is slightly different in other versions of OS X.
Menu > Apple > System Preferences > Keyboard > Shortcuts > App Shortcuts > + > Applications > Pages > Menu Title: PDF… > Keyboard Shortcut > hold down whatever combination you want > Add
As Viking says this won't choose Good, Better, Best but at least it gets you to that point. Unfortunately it always defaults to Good.
NB that PDF… has to be typed with ALL CAPS and the ellipsis is option ; or copy from here. It has to be literally what is in the menu.
You could make a more intelligent keyboard shortcut with 3rd party Apps like Spark [free] or QuicKeys or iKey or Shortcuts for Mac or Keyboard Maestro.

Thanks for the flag J.K. - they contaced me and solved my problem. On this account (which I created just to ask this question), I log in with my email rather than my user name (mtalldud). On the account that I was having trouble with, they told me to use my user ID instead of my email to log in and it worked. This is a bit confusing and seems a bit inconsistent but at least I don't need this temporary account any more to get into this community and find answers!
