How can I repair 10.6.8 when the disk my computer came with is 10.5.4?
Ran Verify Disk and received the following message:
"This disk needs to be repaired. Start up your computer with another disk (such as your Mac OS X installation disc), and then use Disk Utility to repair this disk."
I attempted to do this but while booting the computer would stop at a blank white screen and do nothing. Then I realized that my iMac is running 10.6.8, but the installation disk that came with it when I purchased it is 10.5.4. What can I do to repair my disk?
How did you upgrade to Snow Leopard? You must have purchased the retail Snow Leopard DVD. That is your installation disc. I would not do repairs using a Leopard copy of Disk Utility.

Sorry for not quite understanding. I guess you are referring to a notice in an alert. I do not have that alert active on my device, so I cannot say. I use the banner alert, so I just get a notice of a message and can swipe to open that particular message. If I ignore it, it will eventually go away.

How can I repair my internal earpiece? The speaker works not the earpiece. All other sound features work. I can use an external earpiece and I get sound.
OK, I went to Private Browsing to change Never remember history to choose Use custom settings for history and then clicked on Permanent Private Browsing Mode and clicked on the bottom OK. I then went to my Firefox messages and clicked on that internal-linked multimessage and then clicked on a link. It went there for only 1 second and reverted to the top of the message, not moving on further clicking.
I then went to tools > options > privacy only to find that the default Never remember history was back in the panel. It wasn't stable at Use custom settings for history. I tried this several times. It always reverts either right away or after that 1-second success. One time it lasted an amazing 3 seconds before reverting to the top of the multimessage e-mail. So THAT failed too.
OK, so then I went to Internet Explorer and called up that message. Clicked on an internal link and watched it fail for 1 second and then clicked again and it held the message for a long time. It's something in Firefox not Int. Explorer. Please see the image to let you know what I am doing.

All apps (and other content from the store) are tied to the account that downloaded them, whether or not they are free. To do in-app purchases in that app you will either need to log in with the account that downloaded it, or delete it (which will delete its content) and download it with your currently logged in account if you want to do IAPs on that account.

How can you repair a MacBook air when it won't start properly?
My MacBook Air is just over 3 years old and thus out of warranty.
It gives a message that says the Preference Pane cannot be opened. Mostly the screen is black but sometimes (oddly) Adobe Bridge has a window ... but I cannot move to any other application.
1) is Genius Bar only available if your product is under warranty?
2) is there no way to check it? No recovery shows up when I option-restart.

Diane TBackup your files. If you have a 2010 model that came with a set of two software discs then do the following:
Clean Install of Snow Leopard
Be sure to make a backup first because the following procedure will erase
the drive and everything on it.
1. Boot the computer using the Snow Leopard Installer Disc or the Disc 1 that came
with your computer. Insert the disc into the optical drive and restart the computer.
After the chime press and hold down the "C" key. Release the key when you see
a small spinning gear appear below the dark gray Apple logo.
2. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue
button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
After DU loads select the hard drive entry from the left side list (mfgr.'s ID and drive
size.) Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window. Set the number of
partitions to one (1) from the Partitions drop down menu, click on Options button
and select GUID, click on OK, then set the format type to MacOS Extended
(Journaled, if supported), then click on the Apply button.
3. When the formatting has completed quit DU and return to the installer. Proceed
with the OS X installation and follow the directions included with the installer.
4. When the installation has completed your computer will Restart into the Setup
Assistant. Be sure you configure your initial admin account with the exact same
username and password that you used on your old drive. After you finish Setup
Assistant will complete the installation after which you will be running a fresh
install of OS X. You can now begin the update process by opening Software
Update and installing all recommended updates to bring your installation current.
Download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1. If you wish to upgrade to a later version of OS X, then do so on the App Store.
If you have the 2011 model then do this:
Install or Reinstall Yosemite, Mavericks, Mountain Lion, or Lion from Scratch
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.

‘iPad is disabled’ fix without resetting using iTunes
Today I met my match with an iPad that had a passcode entered too many times, resulting in it displaying the message ‘iPad is disabled – Connect to iTunes’. This was a student iPad and since they use Notability for most of their work there was a chance that her files were not all backed up to the cloud. I really wanted to just re-activate the iPad instead of totally resetting it back to our default image.
I reached out to my PLN on Twitter and had some help from a few people through retweets and a couple of clarification tweets. I love that so many are willing to help out so quickly. Through this I also learned that I look like Lt. Riker from Star Trek (thanks @FillineMachine).
Through some trial and error (and a little sheer luck), I was able to reactivate the iPad without loosing any data. Note, this will only work on the computer it last synced with. Here’s how:
1. Configurator is useless in reactivating a locked iPad. You will only be able to completely reformat the iPad using Configurator. If that’s ok with you, go for it – otherwise don’t waste your time trying to figure it out.
2. Open iTunes with the iPad disconnected.
3. Connect the iPad to the computer and wait for it to show up in the devices section in iTunes.
4. Click on the iPad name when it appears and you will be given the option to restore a backup or setup as a new iPad (since it is locked).
5. Click ‘Setup as new iPad’ and then click restore.
6. The iPad will start backing up before it does the full restore and sync. CANCEL THE BACKUP IMMEDIATELY. You do this by clicking the small x in the status window in iTunes.
7. When the backup cancels, it immediately starts syncing – cancel this as well using the same small x in the iTunes status window.
8. The first stage in the restore process unlocks the iPad, you are basically just canceling out the restore process as soon as it reactivates the iPad.
If done correctly, you will experience no data loss and the result will be a reactivated iPad. I have now tried this with about 5 iPads that were locked identically by students and each time it worked like a charm.

the internal optical drive on my early 2006 20"imac has mechanical problems ejecting discs. i've gone thru all the recommended steps to eject discs, and have luckily been able to eject the last 3 discs but only after spending 30-60 minutes going thru all of the steps over and over, and today just trying "eject disc" in itunes since i had itunes open. i don't want to put another disc in - the drive clearly has problems with the mechanical eject mechanism, and from what i've read that's not unique to my computer.
i bought an external optical drive: lite on, clamshell design to avoid problems with the eject mechanism; i contacted the mfr who said it's mac compatible.
the drive plays dvds, which is all i've tried so far, but doesn't show up in finder. so i don't know how to use it to load software, or music, or anything besides watch dvds.
is there something i can do to get the drive recognized/mounted/whatever? i would prefer to not spend the $220 which was quoted to me by an authorized mac repair company, even tho i think that's probably a reasonable cost given the delicacy of the operation as shown on ifixit.com.

If you want to burn files or music to blank media, you can use Finder or Disk Utility for files, but should use an iTunes playlist/iTunes for music and a movie burn app for videos/movies (such as iDVD, Roxio Toast, Burn, etc).
If you simply want to drag files over as a backup, an external hard drive is a much better solution than a burner. -

How can I skip/pass a lesson when the pre-test is passed?
I'm creating a course with an overview and 3 lessons. Each is its own CP file (Captivate 6).
This course will be hosted in our LMS, where I will require each lesson to be taken/passed.
Lesson 1 is introductory/background material about my topic, and my users may or may not have had exposure to this information already. If they know the info, there's no need for them to take this lesson.
I have added a pre-test to the lesson, that, if failed, forces the user to go through the lesson content and a graded quiz at the end. The score is reported to the LMS and all is well.
If the user passes the pre-test, s/he is jumped to a congrats slide and instructed to exit the lesson. (No need to take the graded quiz - the questions are the same, and they've already "passed.")
My question: How do I report a PASS for the lesson if the user doesn't take the graded quiz? I don't need to report any particular score.

I've done as you suggested as far as I know. The navigation works perfectly, but when it comes to reporting, I'm not seeing what I expect/want.
What I want:
For the user to be able to skip the pre-test (the branching image shows this)If the user passes the pre-test, can exit the course with a Complete/Pass
For the user to have X number of chances at the test. After the user a) passes or b) uses up X chances and still fails, I want to report back to my LMS (I'm testing in scormcloud right now, but will be using HealthStream) both completion AND pass or fail.
What I've got:
The user CAN skip the pre-test (the branching works, anyway)
I can get Captivate to report Complete/Unknown or Complete/Pass (sometimes, even when the user fails the graded quiz), or Incomplete/Unknown. -

That version of the driver is too old to work with Labview 6i. The oldest version of NI-DAQ that one can combine with Labview 6i is version 6.1.
You will need either to use another version of Labview, or to investigate a replacement hardware that you can use with newer versions of NI-DAQ.
