How can I reset an older desktop Mac to original settings?

Hello everybody!  I'm hoping I can get some help with this question.  Bear with me as I have no idea what I'm doing with computers...
My boyfriend has an older Mac desktop computer.  As far as I understand, he purchased it used from someone else.
It is version 10.5.8, Power PC G5.  I believe it's a first generation and running Leopard.
My boyfriend has been having trouble with it being really slow and not downloading newer software updates.  He hasn't really tried to do anything with it to my knowledge, and is instead upgrading to a newer computer and giving me this old one.
So, my question is - is their any way I can wipe out everything on this computer, and get it to where it's like starting up a brand new computer?  Is there any way to get it to a newer version?
Thanks for reading!

You could call Apple with the model and serial number of this computer and they will provide original discs for a $17.95 replacement price; which is not a bad idea, if you ever hope to resell it someday, or donate it, as I did to my niece and nephew!
However the replacement discs are probably Panther and not Leopard.  Since you are already at 10.5.8, not having a Leopard disc is not much of a disadvantage anyway, unless it crashes.
Wiping its hard drive (AFTER you back it up completely) and restoring Leopard and its files might show some improvement in speed, but you do not have a Leopard disc to restore.  Apple no longer sells them and purchasing them on eBay is financially disadvantageous.  There are other sources for acquiring Leopard on the internet but...
One thought might be disc defragmentation.  After time, files get fragmented all over your hard drive, slowing it down.
You would have to find a defrag program that worked in the Leopard days.  These programs are best run from an external drive so that 100% of your Mac hard drive is available for defrag'in.
I used to use iDefrag.  You can contact them and see if they still sell a version for Leopard:
http://www.coriolis-systems.com/iDefrag.php
Is your use of Lightroom and Photoshop for commercial purposes or only hobby?  What versions of Lightroom and Photoshop are you using?
Take a look at the new Mac Mini for $599 and runs Mountain Lion:
http://store.apple.com/us/browse/home/shop_mac/family/mac_mini
I would recommend a third party RAM upgrade, say from OWC:
http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/mac-mini/
And of course you would need to purchase a Display: I use the 22" Samsung and I never miss my iMac G5 anymore!
However, this raises a software upgrade issue, which for Photoshop can be costly.
If you are happy with the current versions of Lightroom and Photoshop, I would still recommend that you put most of your money into hardware and save up for later software upgrades.
The way to accomplish this is to install Snow Leopard Server into Parallels 8 on your new Mac Mini; which will provide the needed PowerPC emulator Rosetta, which your applications will require:
Snow Leopard Server is now available from the Apple Store for $19.99 + sales tax & shipping: 1.800.MYAPPLE (1.800.692.7753). Apple Part Number: MC588Z/A (telephone sales only)
Parallels 8 is now available for a 40% discount for 3 more days with the $49.99 March 2013 MacUpdate 10 apps bundle:
https://deals.macupdate.com
Adobe now offers a freely downloadable version of Creative Suite 2 (CS2), which being PowerPC applications, can only run as I have shown in SLS in Parallels:

Hi, yes, I messed it up by trying to edit it.

The problem when I try to get it back to normal is that it never looks just like it did. It looks mainly fine, but things like light blues look wrong.

  • How can I reset new password in .mac system preferences?

...so that I can upgrade to MobileMe. When I type in my new password and hit Enter, or click over to Sync, it insists on remembering the old password, and then I can't sync. The odd thing is, when I enter the new password into .Mac preferences I get "thanks for being a member" and the days remaining on my account. The new password also works to log me in online, but I can't change system preferences to perform the upgrade to MobileMe. The old .Mac link to iCal works--the info is up to date--but the MobileMe calendar, contacts, bookmarks, etc have no data.. Any ideas?

I need to reset the Reminders app to default setting just as if I had freshly installed it....how can I do this ?
    Help anyone ?
    Thank you !!!

Ok, in this case your iMac will be performing as an application server. As such, it will need to be "reachable" from the Internet. This is typically done in one of two ways: 1) It is assigned a static Public IP address, or 2) It is assigned a static Private IP address.
In the first method, your iMac will be like any other publically available server (Web, E-Mail, etc.) To accomplish this, you would need for your ISP to provide you with a static Public IP. You can then configure the AirPort Extreme to allow remote clients to access this server by creating a DMZ for the server. This would fully expose your iMac to the Internet.
In the second method, you would assign the iMac a static Private IP address that is just outside of the default range of the AirPort's DHCP service. You would then configure the AirPort for port mapping. Which ports that will be needed to be mapped will depend on what your application's support tells you.

*A click on the "More Information" button will open the Security tab of the "Page Info" window (also accessible via "Tools > Page Info").
*Open the <i>Media</i> tab of the "Page Info" window.
*Select the first image and scroll down though the list with the Down arrow key.
*If an image in the list is grayed and there is a check-mark in the box "<i>Block Images from...</i>" then remove that mark to unblock the images from that domain.

  • Trying to restore my Mac OS  after a hard drive failure and my password is no longer recognized, however I can log in by double clicking on the Lion Icon? How can I reset my password

I am trying to restore my Mac OS after a hard drive failure and my password is no longer recognized, however I can log in by double clicking on the Lion Icon? How can I reset my password

First, make sure caps lock is not on.
Another reason why your password might not be recognized is that the keyboard layout (input source) has been switched without your realizing it. At the login screen, you can cycle through the available layouts by pressing the key combinationcommand-space or command-option-space. See this support article.
If the user account is associated with an Apple ID, and you know the Apple ID password, then maybe the Apple ID can be used to reset your user account password.
Otherwise*, boot into Recovery mode. When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select
    Utilities ▹ Terminal
from the menu bar. In the window that opens, type this:
    res
Press the tab key. The partial command you typed will automatically be completed to this:
    resetpassword
Press return. A Reset Password window opens. Close the Terminal window to get it out of the way.
Select your boot volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name) if not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
Follow the prompts to reset the password. It's safest to choose a password that includes only the characters a-z, A-Z, and 0-9.
    Select
     ▹ Restart
    from the menu bar.
You should now be able to log in with the new password, but your Keychain will be reset (empty.) If you've forgotten the Keychain password (which is ordinarily the same as your login password), there's no way to recover it.
*Note: If you've activated FileVault, this procedure doesn't apply. Follow instead these instructions.

Do a factory reset .. nothing will be deleted from your backups and you will be able to get access to them again.
    The Factory Reset Gen1-4.
Unplug your TC. Hold in reset. and power the TC back on.. without releasing reset for about 10sec. When the status light flashes rapidly; release it.
Be Gentle! Feel the switch click on. It has a positive feel..  add no more pressure after that.
TC will reboot after a couple of minutes with default factory settings and will wipe out previous configurations.
No files are deleted on the hard disk.. No reset of the TC deletes files.. to do that you use erase from the airport utility.

My daughter forgot her Mac book pro password. How can I reset it?

Put your install DVD into the optical drive (CD/DVD drive) and reboot. Be sure to either use the disc that came with your Mac, or, if you installed a later Mac OS X version from disc, use the newer disc. As soon as you hear the boot chime, hold down the "c" key on your keyboard (or the Option Key until the Install Disk shows up) until the apple shows up. That will force your MacBook to boot from the install DVD in the optical drive.
When it does start up, you'll see a panel asking you to choose your language. Choose your language and press the Return key on your keyboard once. It will then present you with an Installation window. Completely ignore this window and click on Utilities in the top menu and scroll down to Reset Password. After resetting the password use Startup Disk from the same menu to choose your hard drive for startup and restart.

How can I reset my Mac to default settings? Or how can I reset it to a prior date? My Mac has a virus and I would like to get rid of it. I would appreciate your help concerning this matter.

To restore it follow these instructions: What to do before selling or giving away your Mac.
    Before you do the above check out the following;
    Helpful Links Regarding Malware Problems
If you are having an immediate problem with ads popping up see The Safe Mac » Adware Removal Guide, AdwareMedic, or Remove unwanted adware that displays pop-up ads and graphics on your Mac - Apple Support.
Open Safari, select Preferences from the Safari menu. Click on Extensions icon in the toolbar. Disable all Extensions. If this stops your problem, then re-enable them one by one until the problem returns. Now remove that extension as it is causing the problem.
The following comes from user stevejobsfan0123. I have made minor changes to adapt to this presentation.
Fix Some Browser Pop-ups That Take Over Safari.
Common pop-ups include a message saying the government has seized your computer and you must pay to have it released (often called "Moneypak"), or a phony message saying that your computer has been infected, and you need to call a tech support number (sometimes claiming to be Apple) to get it resolved. First, understand that these pop-ups are not caused by a virus and your computer has not been affected. This "hijack" is limited to your web browser. Also understand that these messages are scams, so do not pay any money, call the listed number, or provide any personal information. This article will outline the solution to dismiss the pop-up.
    Quit Safari
Usually, these pop-ups will not go away by either clicking "OK" or "Cancel." Furthermore, several menus in the menu bar may become disabled and show in gray, including the option to quit Safari. You will likely have to force quit Safari. To do this, press Command + option + esc, select Safari, and press Force Quit.
    Relaunch Safari
If you relaunch Safari, the page will reopen. To prevent this from happening, hold down the 'Shift' key while opening Safari. This will prevent windows from the last time Safari was running from reopening.
This will not work in all cases. The shift key must be held at the right time, and in some cases, even if done correctly, the window reappears. In these circumstances, after force quitting Safari, turn off Wi-Fi or disconnect Ethernet, depending on how you connect to the Internet. Then relaunch Safari normally. It will try to reload the malicious webpage, but without a connection, it won't be able to. Navigate away from that page by entering a different URL, i.e. www.apple.com, and trying to load it. Now you can reconnect to the Internet, and the page you entered will appear rather than the malicious one.

  • How can a reset my mac to factory settings.

How can a reset my mac to factory settings.  I have done something wrong and I think at this point it would be better to start form scratch

Restart holding both the Command and R keys.  That will boot the machine to the recovery hard drive, a hidden partition that starts cleanly to the Mac OS X.  You can then choose from the Utiltities drop down, Disk Utility.  From that you can format the hard drive...you will then have to choose to Reinstall Mac OS X...doing this erases the hard drive and you lose all content.  Make a backup on an external hard drive first so you can restore your applications and so you don't lose your data.
