How can I restore my system to 2 days ago without Time Machine?

I don't want to wipe the disc, just restore the settings to 2 days ago. Time Machine hadn't been set up yet.

OS X doesn't have "System Restore" like on Windows where it's rather simple to revert the system/programs to a earlier state without affecting your files.
Next time, prepare for this eventuality to occur and have both a TimeMachine and bootable clones, combined with your most precious files further backed up to cd's and dvd's if possible.

  • How can I restore stickies which were not backed up on Time Machine?

I accidently deleted some text on a stickie note.  That note was not backed up in Time Machine. That text is also gone from the Stickies Database.  Everything that I read online leads me to believe that I can find this deleted text in this file... com.apple.Stickies.plist.  Is that correct?
If so how do I retrieve this text?  Is there a tutorial somewhere?
The notes online say that I can open the file in Omni Outliner and then use NVU to convert it to text.  How does that work?
When I open the file in Omni Outliner, I get this...
Now what do I do?  Any help, or suggestions on how to recover this data, either using the method described above or otherwise, would be helpful.
    Thank You.

  • HT4889 How can I restore my email accounts and email settings from time machine without restoring all the applications

I have just restored my Macbook Pro having had some applications corrupting it. I have restored my data and other information, but am struggling to restore my email accounts, signatures, folders and contents. I have been using time machine, but do not know how to restore the right bit. Thanks for your help. P

Open Time Machine, and in Finder navigate to the "V2" folder (shown below) and highlight its contents. Then select the Previous DATE over on the right edge of Time machine to then "Restore" from.
    Hope this helps

    Hello,

You need a computer with iTunes installed to regain use of your iPod.  Unless you have the iPod backup file from the syncing computer all you can do is to restore the iPod to factoery defaults/new iPod.  You will also need to place the iPod in recovery mode is you restore the iPod on other than on its syncing computer.  For reoverymode see:
iPhone and iPod touch: Unable to update or restore
Remember the passcode is a security feature.

How can I restore deleted pictures from an iPhone 5  without back up?

If you've previously synced the pictures to a computer (as is generally advised to archive them), then they are gone, unless you have backed up the device to itunes or icloud.  If so, you need to perform a restore:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1766?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US
Go to Settings>General>Reset and tap Erase All Content and Settings.  This will erase your phone.  Then you will go through the setup screens again as you did when your phone is new, and when given the option, select Restore from iCloud Backup.
Note that you cannot restore just one file, it's all or nothing.

  • How can I restore my sons itouch to original settings without doing the restore through iTunes? He can't remember his passcode and when I try to restore through iTunes it never completes the update/restore without timing out?!?!

HOw can I restore my sons itouch to original settings without going through iTunes restore? When I plug into iTunes it will never complete the update/restore without timing out? He can't remember his password. I can't get my iTunes to update to the newest level either without timing out. Please help!

The thread title differs from the original post, sorry for the confusion.  I read password instead of passcode.
The only way past a passcode lock is by entering the passcode.  Refer to HT1212 iOS: Wrong passcode results in red disabled screen:
If you cannot remember the passcode, you will need to restore your device using the computer with which you last synced it. This allows you to reset your passcode and resync the data from the device (or restore from a backup).
If you restore on a different computer that was never synced with the device, you will be able to unlock the device for use and remove the passcode, but your data will not be present.
As for timing out during the restore...
If there isn't any antivirus or firewalls in the way, I would try restoring from a different user account or even a different computer.  If still unable to restore without timing out, I would try a different network.

  • Can I restore a new hard drive from a previous time machine back-up?

    Hi there,
My MacBook Pro 13 inch is 4 years old.
The computer began to freeze/stop working, so I took it to an Apple care centre and they informed that my hard drive has crashed and has to be replaced.
Luckily, I backed up my old hard drive a few days before with an external hard drive using Time Machine. My question is: can I restore this new hard drive with my old time machine backup that is on my external hard drive? If so, how do I do this?
    Thanks

Of course! If you couldn't, Time Machine would be rather worthless, now wouldn't it?

I hear a lot of disk I/O from my iMac 1TB drive.  How can I see apps may be running in background?  Time Machine is not running.

If you wnat to see the applications that are running, open the Activity Monitor application (it's in /Applications/Utilities). After opening it, select "All Processes" above "Show" in the toolbar, and you will see all the processes that are running.
I/O errors often happen on a damaged hard drive. If you are receiving that error, you should make a backup with Time Machine or Carbon Copy Cloner as soon as possible and take your Mac to an Apple Store or reseller to get another hard disk.
If the warranty is void, you can try installing it yourself, but note that there are some iMacs which are very difficult to have the hard drive replaced. Search the steps in iFixit > http://www.ifixit.com

  • I really need to go back to the save I made a day ago, my time machine is not set up and files haven't been automatically uploading to cc is there anyway I can go back a day in saves?

Hi, I just had an issue with a photoshop document, my mac book temporarily crashed the screen glitches and deleted some vital layers I had constructed (took half a day) I thought I could correct it and saved it a few times in a panic and now i really need to go back to the save I made a day ago, my time machine is not set up and I just realised my files haven't been automatically uploading to cc is there anyway I can go back a day in saves?

So you don't have anything like Shadow Protect running in the background?
Video editing software only needs to save the steps taken to achieve the edit, and references the actual video files from the hard drive.  So the saved files are only tiny, and it takes very little drive space to auto save to incrementing file names.  Obviously, Photoshop files can be huge by comparison, so the only way to save with a different file name is to do it manually.
I think most regular posters to this forum make a point of updating the file name of a large project every hour or so, and as a direct response to reading so many horror stories like your own.  The worst story I remember was from a poster whose computer had crashed half way through saving a large PSD file.  After several response, questions and answers, it turned out he was using a laptop with a failing battery.  He told us that he could see the battery was getting low, but left it and left it before finally hitting Ctrl s and running off to find the laptop's power lead. When he got back the laptop had run out of power and shut down, and his PSD file was lost forever.  He may have been a prime candidate to a computing Darwin Award, but his stupidity still did the rest of us a service so we could learn from his mistake.
    Ouch.
My digital audio workstation works on the same principle; it creates a backup save just in case things go wrong (which--knock on wood--hasn't happened to me) and only references audio/MIDI files that are related to the project.
My advice is to always, always back up sensitive documents. There are lots of ways of doing this, from manually to automatically. (e.g., A lot of higher-end routers let you connect external storage via USB so you can run backup software that detects any changes to a monitored folder over a network and then backs up any changed/updated documents to the connected storage. I prefer to do it myself manually, though.)

  • How can I restore up to the current day after restoring from a disk image??

I do two types of backups... Every night I connect my MB to TM and it backs up changes made throughout the day. On Saturdays I do the same. I bring up time machine and force to backup NOW. I then turn off time machine. I then perform an image backup of the full disk and keep that full weekly image offsite.
Well I upgraded to SL, and once again many of my drivers still don't work with SL particularly a Verizon Broadband card that I was provided drivers for that have a bug. So back to Leopard I go again.
I restored the full image backup using boot from DVD & Disk utility. This worked fast and quickly restored my MBP to exactly the point where I forced the backup to time-machine. I had done some work Sunday morning, and made changes to a bunch of files. I forced a TM backup later that night to ensure to catch these changes. After the failure of the SL load, I restored as I noted from an image which is much faster.
The question is... I am now at the same point of Sat morning. How can I restore to the point where I was Saturday night just before I did a test upgrade to SL if I touched a bunch of stuff. (Some work files, some personal files). So what I really need to restore is the files backed up after my full image from Saturday AM? Any way to do this without knowing the files I updated?
CLearly TM knows what files were changed and backed them up Saturday night before I performed the upgrade??
    Thanks!
    Mark

The easiest, most reliable way is to do a full system restore, as of the Saturday night Time Machine backup. See #14 in the Frequently Asked Questions *User Tip* at the top of this forum.
If for some reason you don't want to do that, you can get a list of the items that were actually backed-up, via +Time Tracker+ or +Backup Loupe.+ See #8 in the FAQ Tip.

I tried to restore it, but fond out that all it did was removed all my songs ect, but the update is still the most current version. Please someone, please help me. You may have the accessibility VoiceOver feature or another one turned on.
Triple click the home button and try going to Settings>General>Accessibility and turn VoiceOver off and any others off. You may have to use three fingers to scroll the screen to get there. If problems see the following for how to turn off via iTunes:
iPhone: Configuring accessibility features (including VoiceOver and Zoom)
    Next try:
    Try:
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Restore from backup. See:

  • How can I restore my system to a smaller drive?

I have lost my Macbook Pro that had 250GB hard drive, which probably had 230GB full of stuff. My replacement computer (for now) is MacBook Air with 128GB SSD. Fortunately I have Time Capsule with latest backup but now I don't know what to do.
I'd like to restore my system but I know I could keep some of the files on external HDD. For example my iTunes and iPhoto library has probably 100-120 GB altogether so I think the system would fit without these files.
    How can I do this?
Another question - can I copy the sparsebundle file of my MacBook Pro from Time Capsule to external HDD and create exact copy of my old hard drive? Just in case, to have it on two places in case new Time Machine backups rewrite the old ones

Wow that's a lot of info. So:
I shouldn't do time machine system restore because I'm using different computer
Is migration assistant launched after clean OS install?
Can I choose specific folders to restore? For example I want to restore iPhoto app but I want to move my iPhoto library somewhere else.
Can I move sparsebundle image from Time Capsule to external drive? Macbook Air does not have ethernet and restoring everything over wifi would take ages I guess. Plus I want to have another copy of the old system somewhere else than Time Capsule.
