How can I restrict access to add. internal hard drive by account?

Hello! Okay, so I am my computer's administrator, and I have a secondary 'guest' account that anyone else can use. So, I know that all my data on my main, OS hard drive is secure from the guest account accessing it, but what about the additional hard drive that I have installed?
I have a good deal of sensitive data and files stored (and aliased) on my second internal drive that I do not care for 'guest' users to stumble upon. How can I restrict access to the secondary storage hard drive from my Guest login account, and/or just plain hide it from it? Surely, there is a need for this that has brought about a solution. Any tips/advice/solutions?
Thanks!!!
=)

  • How can i restrict access to a mounted smb drive?

Hope someone can help this is bugging me! i'm running this apple script as a student logs in to mount the students share folder, located on a MS2003 server, and a share drive on an Xserve to their desktop:
set student_name to (do shell script "echo $USER")
    property stu_password : ""
-- displays the password dialog box and stores the result in stu_password
    repeat while stu_password is ""
display dialog "enter your password to access the share" default answer stu_password with hidden answer
set stu_password to text returned of result
    end repeat
-- mounts the network share to the desktop
    tell application "Finder"
    open location "smb://servername/stuhome/" & student_name & "/"
    open location "afp://" & student_name & ":" & stu_password & "@servername/Share/"
    end tell
It works fine and mounts the drives however... finder then defaults the network location so the student has access to all the folders on /servername/stuhome/ I just want it to mount /servername/stuhome/username/ with no backwards access. I cant set permissions from a server folder level (i don't think!) as its a windows server. any suggestions? why does finder do this? ta.

  • I have a late 2012 iMac running osx 10.8.5.  I keep losing access to my internal hard drive.  I can reboot and regain access and it will last for a few minutes or hours.  Disk utility does not seems to help.

I have a late 2012 iMac with an I5 precessor running OSX 10.8.5 and a 1tb internal hard drive.  I keep losing access to the internal hard drive/startup disk.
I can reboot and everything operates as normal for a few minutes or hours but then I lose all access again to anything on the hard drive.  The computer is still up and running but no files can be accessed and certain websites cannot be acessed even though internet access appears to be normal.  Disk utility can only find permission errors related to iTunes which can be repaired only to come back at the next scan (I would not think permission errors would have anything to do with the hard drive crashing).  It does not seem to matter what program I am using at the time access is lost and it can lose access sometimes right after reboot when no program is running.

You will need to boot into the Recovery Volume (command - R on a restart or hold down the option/alt key during restart and select it) to run Disk Utility/Disk Repair.

The Apple article will transfer everything from one volume to another.  Doing what you want is not simple, unfortunately.
See Transferring Home Folders not on a Startup volume, especially scenario #1 in the gray box there.
That's just recently reworded and revised; please advise if it's not clear or you have problems with it.

  • How can I install ntfs on an external hard drive so that my Samsung Smart TV can see my media files? Or is there a better option?

How can I install ntfs on an external hard drive so that my Samsung Smart TV can see my media files? Or is there a better option?

OS X cannot natively write to a drive formatted as NTFS, nor can it format a drive as NTFS. There are third-party NTFS drivers available on the market.
Just out of curiosity: Even with NTFS, how is your TV going to access the external hard drive? Does the TV have a USB port?

  • Where can I find an Apple certified internal hard drive?

I have a December 2006 MacBook Pro that I upgraded RAM and hard drives (twice) from OWC. After having Apple replace the display and the motherboard (again twice) I've been having boot problems. My local Genius Bar told me to replace the RAM with my original RAM and see if it solves the problem.
Well, it seems to solve it, but my internal HD shows up as "Failing" in disk utility. I cleaned off my original 120GB HD and installed the OS (Snow Leopard) and whenever it's plugged into firewire, the system will boot automatically to it rather than the internal drive.
There's an Apple logo on the original drive, so there's something about it that the Mac likes. There seems to be something to the "official" Apple hardware deal.
My problem is that the Apple Store doesn't seem to sell either internal drives for notebooks or memory for MacBook Pros as old as mine.
I can take it back to the Genius Bar to find out if they can sell me the right stuff without having to install it themselves, but I'd much rather do it myself, so I don't have to let go of my computer, which I use every day.
Any thoughts? Apparently I can't trust the hardware that OWC sells. Does this make any sense?

Where can I find an Apple certified internal hard drive?
    At Apple
But if you want to spend less ..... OWC have a great selection and are very Mac Friendly

  • Hey, can i clone my Macbook Pro internal hard drive and then paste it all onto a formated external hard drive, then make the Mac use the external as the primary hard drive?

hey, can i clone my Macbook Pro internal hard drive and then paste it all onto a formated external hard drive, then make the Mac use the external as the primary hard drive? please help for i only have around 618mb left out of 189GB!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    If what doesn't work?
If cloning your internal drive to the external drive is not successful, I expect CCC will tell you so. Assuming that doesn't happen, you will have a bootable replica of the internal drive on the external drive once CCC has finished.
You can then do any of several things:
    1. Replace your internal drive with a much larger one (320GB or 500GB, or even larger), and clone the external drive's contents onto the new drive so you'll have all your data in one place. Note that if you do this, you'll also need to buy an external drive that's large enough to back the new internal drive up on.
    2. Boot from the external drive as a temporary measure while you clear at least 30-40GB of data off the internal drive, allowing you to keep using it and saving small amounts of data to it. The external drive will then contain the only copies of the files you've deleted from the internal drive, so you'll need a seond external drive large enough to back both the other drives up on.
If you can't comfortably clear a minimum of 30GB off the internal drive, you really need a larger internal drive right now, and you shouldn't bother fooling around with the inadequate one you have — you'll just quickly overfill it again.
    3. Replace the optical drive in your MBP with a large conventional hard drive, giving you two hard drives inside the machine. You will then need one or more external drives large enough to back up both of the internal drives.
If you sense a theme here — back up, back up, back up — you are correct. It's flat-out foolhardy to own or use a computer without maintaining complete, up-to-date backups of everything at all times.

  • How can I erase deleted items from the hard drive?

How can I erase deleted files from the hard drive?  Will my machine run faster?

If you've already deleted the files and emptied the Trash they are already, in effect, erased. At least the disk space they occupied is now available.
To be able to offer help we need more information about which Mac you have, which OS you are running, how much RAM you have installed, how much hard disk space you have available, etc.
Go to the Apple Menu>About this Mac - copy and paste the contents of the report here (deleting the serial number of your machine). Once we have that info, I'm sure someone will have some suggestions.

  • How can I restrict access to cloud storage from Creative Cloud? We don't want our users putting files outside the organization.

We need to restrict our users from storing files outside the organization. How can we restrict this capability?

They have Cs6, however I need to have my own copy, and the highest I can go with my system is CS5, maybe even 5.5. I've a small budget, and most copies are being sold for massive amounts because they're like collector items. I've seen the ones actually affordable within my range from sellers that arent trustworthy, or they're updates which I can't use. I had Cs2, but with updates to operating systems they stopped working. Thank you for your kind assistance.

  • Want to add internal hard drive to my Mac Pro

I want to add an internal hard drive to my Mac Pro bought in 2011
Running Lion 10.7.5  Processor is 2.8 GHz Quad Core Intel Xeon
    Have a 1TB SATA
Do I need a 2.5" or 3.5" ? Any other criteria i should know about when looking?
    Advice is appreciated.

For a Mac Pro you'll probably want to go with a 3.5" drive. I would recommend Hitachi. I put a 2.5" new model Hitachi in my laptop along with an SSD and the Hitachi HD is unbelievably fast for a "spinner." If that's how there 2.5" models are there 3.5" models will only be better.
Make sure none of the drives you use have a variable rotational speed. Some of the Western Digital Green drives have that and they go to sleep a lot. When they sleep they have to wake up and when they wake up it causes a delay. It won't happen if the drives in constant use but it can be annoying. I believe the Green drives are intended primarily for backup use where speed isn't critical but energy savings and longevity are.
These are my opinions and observations.

  • Cannot access my second internal hard drive after changing permissions

Changed the permissions by mistake on the second internal hard drive and now windows 7 cannot see it. Going to   My Computer Icon, ?>>> Manage >> Disk Management   and Try to initialize it but i get the incorrect function error.
How can i get back access to my hard drive.?

    Hi Alex,
    What is your current situation?
You may check if you could manage the disk through diskpart:
A Description of the Diskpart Command-Line Utility
Under diskpart, enter the following line:
    List disk
As Frederik suggested, please check the disk health first.
    Best regards
