How can I stop iMessages from going to *all* of our devices?

As many households do, we share the same AppleID so that we can share apps and information easily.  With iOS5, now we iMessage each other for free, BUT all other iMessages that we send to other iOS5 users are also blasted out to all other iOS5 devices.  My husband doesn't want to see all my texts to other people, but now there is NO WAY to send a normal text to other iOS5 users...it will only go out as an iMessage.  Is the only solution to get a separate AppleID for my husband and then buy all of our apps again for him?  That would be a huge pain, essentially requiring him to erase his iPhone and iPad and start over.  Or do I disable iMessages for him?  Is there any way to distinguish between different users within the same AppleID?

Everyone can still use the same Apple ID. What you need to do is go into - "Settings" , "Messages", "Receive At", and add a different Email for each user for where they can be reached for messages at. Once you have added a new Email to each device delete the original Email that was there which should have been the same as your Apple ID. Then when you send a new message, send the message to the Email for that person that was just added to their iPhone. There is no need for each family member to create their own Apple ID just to use iMessage. Each family member would only need to create their own Apple ID if everyone wanted to use iCloud and not have all family members data, contacts, calendars, etc sync together. If you are also using FaceTime between iPhones do the the same thing in the FaceTime settings.

When I send messages through imessage on my Mac, the chat is also sent to my sister's phone. Her phone is registered to my Apple ID, but how do I stop all my imessages going to her iphone?

Take her iPhone and follow this steps:
Settings/iMessage/Receive at/Add another email - add her email account. Then you wil see two email accounts at Receive at - tap your apple id email and just remove it. That's it.

  • How can I disable iMessages from going to my iMac?

I recently upgraded to Mountain Lion. Since then, iMessages won't be delivered to my iPhone. They always get delivered to my iMac. This is especially annoying because I'm not home most of the day and texting is a primary means of communications, particularly with my better half.
I have quit Messages on my desktop, but iMessages still get delivered to Messages on the desktop. I took my desktop offline (no Internet connectivity), and iMessages just get queued in the cloud somewhere until I get home and bring my desktop online again. Nothing but regular text messages go to my iPhone. I have even disabled my Apple account in Messages on the desktop, but iMessages are still being delivered there. I never had this problem prior to Mountain Lion.
My better half, also with an iMac and iPhone, doesn't have any of these problems. I have verified that all the settings are the same between his and my desktops and iPhones. But I still have the problem. I don't use Messages on my dekstop and have no interest in receiving messages there.
Is there a way that I can disable iMessages from going to my desktop or otherwise limit iMessages to only my iPhone? Please help!

OK, problem solved. I think the issue is that I was a .mac account holder turned MobileMe turned iCloud (and still getting screwed over apparently). My Apple ID is @mac.com, but my email address is @me.com when Apple forced us all over. Messages on my desktop was set up with my mac.com Apple ID, while Messages on my phone was set up with my me.com email address. I went into appleid.apple.com and merged my primary email address and Apple ID to the mac.com address. I logged out of Messages on both the desktop and phone, logged back in with my Apple ID, and then had to delete the conversations from both my and my other half's iPhones.
Interestingly, it took about five minutes for both phones to delete the conversations, and the phones were completely unresponsive during this time. After that, I sent a text (iMessage) from my other half's phone to mine, and voila! It works. Apparently @mac.com does not equal @me.com... Apple sees them separately. What a nightmare, but I'm glad it's working now.

  • How can I stop Firefox from going to an https url automatically even when I type in http?

The browser is loading https websites even when I type in http. Asking for security certificates, etc. My home page is listed as http:// ....but when Firefox opens it, it is https://
I have changed the autobar fill in abbout:config, but it has had no effect.
The only solution I've seen on the Internet so far is to switch to Chrome, something I'd prefer not to do.
    Running the latest Firefox 30
    Thanks.

Your homepage is http://news.google.com/ per your system details.
Google has recently started switching everything over to HTTPS, so you may want to check Google help about that.

You can share the same Apple ID in
Settings > iTunes & App Store > Apple ID: here
But for all other Apple services like:
FaceTime, iMessage, iCloud, etc, one of you should use a different Apple ID.

A friend is complaining that every time I send him a text message to his iphone from my iphone it goes to his ipad. How can I stop this from occurring ?

If he has iMessage on his iPad set to receive at his iPhone's phone number, that is exactly what is supposed to happen.  There's nothiing you can do - he needs to remove his iPhone number from his "you can be reached at" iMessage settings on his iPad.

    Hi iprover,
Let me first say that I am NO EXPERT with anything Apple and really have only started looking into this iCloud stuff a few hours ago because I'm trying to help my mom free up some space on her iCloud. But anyway, here's what I'm learning and what I THINK might be happening to you.
Also, if any Apple support people (do they browse the forums to dish out helpful hints?) or people who probably know infinitely more than me about this stuff, please do chime in and confirm / correct my statements!
    This is what I gather.
iCloud for Windows is set up with a local folder (let's call it "C:\Users\Administrator\Pictures\iCloud Photos\My Photo Stream") where iCloud will store photos uploaded to the Photo Stream. This will allow you to view your Photo Stream photos on your PC.
This does not mean that this is a PC backup of your Photo Stream photos, but just a way to view your Photo Stream from your PC. That being said, the general Photo Stream rules apply: 1. No videos are on the photo-stream, and 2. Photos on the Photo Stream will be removed after ~30 days and/or after hitting the Photo Stream limit of 1000 photos.
My guess is that the iCloud Windows App will delete photos from the local folder that are older than ~30 days and/or delete all but the most recent 1000 items if the 1000-item limit is reached.
That is a scary thought! I really hope you did not lose all your pictures, but my guess is that the iCloud local folder is NOT meant for backup but instead is the iCloud Windows App's sandbox for updating and managing Photo Stream photos.
All that being said, I'd say it's important to back up your photos in a separate folder not related to the iCloud local folder.

How can I stop ID from opening docs in full screen in ID 5.5?

You didn't answer the OS question, but I'm going to presume it's some version of OS X. This has been, I think, a common complaint among Mac users, but as a PC person I don't remember what exactly can be done about it, if anything. On thing you might want to try is using the Application Frame.

  • How can I STOP Firefox from being a glutton with my virtual memory?

How can I STOP Firefox from being a glutton with my virtual memory?

Yes. But, I see from the THOUSANDS of responses here concerning Firefox memory issues that other people have had no more success than I have at trying to STOP Firefox's memory gluttony. The fact that Firefox runs fine (like the good old days) for a while after re-booting and registry cleaning shows that something is going on beyond the trivial/ineffective suggestions offered in the referenced links.
Having to re-boot several times a day to get Firefox out of the molasses is such a pain, that it's no wonder people are going back to IE, or like me, reluctantly relying more and more on Google Chrome.

how can i disable imessage from automatically starting up when i turn on macbook air? i dont know my imessages to pop up on my laptop when it turns on. But i dont want to disable imessage totally on my macbook.

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
First of all, check that Messages is closed when you turn off your MacBook. This is so important because, by default, OS X will reopen all opened apps the next time you start your Mac.
Apart from that, when you go to  > Shut Down, or  > Restart, in the window you see to restart or turn off your MacBook, unmark "Reopen windows when logging back in". This will avoid that your Mac opens all opened apps the next time you start the MacBook, so Messages won't start automatically at startup
