How can I sync iPod Mini after hard drive reformat?

My son has an iPod mini. Recently, we had to have our computer hard drive reformatted and had to reinstall iTunes. When we try to sync the mini, it shows up with all it's songs, but the songs won't update into the library, so the desktop iTunes has nothing in it. Anyone able to help me with this? I'm sure it's an easy fix but for now I'm at a loss. Thanks in advance for any help you can shed on this.

Welcome to Apple Discussions.
Sounds like you have to transfer the songs from the mini back to the computer first.

Before there is a next time, consider backing up the songs on your computer on CD-R or DVDR or external hard disk before doing a reformat.

  • How can i sync ipod to external hard drive ?

Help needed please, brief history,i have an ipod classic and using windows, friend came to tidy up itunes said he would delete doubles and he lost 3/4 of itunes in the process (not good) so ipod still had 150gig of songs on, but itunes was down 70gig with lots of tracks missing, after that i didnt not connect pod to itunes incase it removed tracks from ipod.
Now another friend (better) has transfers all contents of ipod to an external hard drive, and i have wiped itunes completly, thought it best to start a fresh, my question is when i turn my external hard drive(J Drive) on with all the music files how can i sync it to itunes to get everything back into itunes from the external ? i have gone into preferances and advance and changed the sorce to J Drive but it isnt finding anything...... please help

Do you want to keep your tunes on the external drive of have them back on your computer?
If you want them on your external drive, do this:
Go to preferences > advanced in iTunes. Ensure that 'Copy Files to iTunes Music folder when adding to library' is NOT ticked. Now, in windows file manager, navigate to the folder where all your music is stored on your external drive. Drag this to itunes. It should import of the your music's data, but keep the files on the external drive
If you want them on your computer: Do the same but tick 'Copy Files to iTunes Music folder when adding to library'
    You should now be good.

  • Backing up IPod Mini after Hard Drive Failure

Hi I recently had a new hard drive installed and had to reinstall mi Ipod software. Luckily I had made a back up Data DVD with all my songs.
However after loading the disk every time I try to play a song through Itunes I get the message "The song .... could not be used because the original file could not be found would you like to locate it". I can't locate the song. The only way to play my songs through Itunes is to have the back up disk loaded.
The songs are playing ok in my Ipod but its good to be able to listen to songs whilst on line.
    Please can someone help.

  • How can I sync at least 2 hard drives my G4?

I have now 4 hard drives on my MAC 1.25 GHz Power PC G4.
The reason I have so many, I run out of space working with many large movie files all at one time.
Unfortunately my Mac system, applications, mail, internet, composer and movie applications are all on the smallest of these drives.
I have the same administrator password for all 4.
I still have the mail, address books, bookmarks within Netscape on the same small drive. I run a website pertaining to collector trail bikes, with personal ads being placed by others about these bikes, so my mail boxes are big and very important.
I can only move them to Safari and Mac Mail the first time these applications are opened, but the first time the system opens the new drive Safari automatically starts to connect over ADSL to tell me about new updates. Therefore there is no way in the real world for an active mail box to make this transition.
So maybe I have to keep it all in Netscape, but like to move it to another bigger drive. I have put another SYS 10.3.9 plus all relevant App's on one of the other bigger drives, but cannot move any bookmarks, address books, security keys between the 2 drives having the system on it, unless I establish a new DIFFERENT USER ID on the second drive, wich then does not allow me to move anything from the older drive and its user ID.
I'd like to access everything from either drive.
Is there a way to sync the 2 drives using the same user ID?
Can it be done without having a .Mac account?

    Hi Number22,
There are two softwares available (that I know of) that will "clone" the smaller drive to the larger one.
Carbon Copy Cloner (free.. all they ask for is donations):
    http://www.bombich.com/software/ccc.html
and SuperDuper (also free... unless you want more options):

By-the-way, as 'firemandan900' pointed out, your chances of getting answers are greater if you posted in the correct forum.

  • How can I sync my iPad to hard drive that has been replaced. It was on the hard drive that crashed

I had to replace my hard drive and having trouble syncing iTunes without losing content.

Reset the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider if it appears on the screen - let go of the buttons. Let the iPad start up.

i have deleted my private folder and do not have enough space to reinstall my operating system. How can i transfer files from my hard drive to an USB drive to free up space when the operating system isn't working. or do i need to erase disk through disk utilities without erasing data (but will it delete my programs such as photoshop, office, creative suite?

Connect the computer to another Mac and put it in FireWire Target Disk mode, or use the Disk Utility to clone the drive or image specific folders with the USB drive as the target. After you've copied off everything you want, you'll likely need to erase the drive and reinstall the applications.

How can I move music from a hard drive to iphone?

Import it into an iTunes library and then sync the iPhone with that library. If desired, launch iTunes with the Shift key held down and create or choose an iTunes library on that drive.

  • How can I erase (or remove) the hard drive from a dead Time Capsule?

How can I erase (or remove) the hard drive from a dead Time Capsule?

I found this having had the same problem...
    http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=553818
Having removed the hard drive I'm finding I can't reformat it. I manage to mount the HD but Disk Utility crashes when trying to format (HD attached to Mac via Newer Tech. SATA cables to USB) and causes what I think is a kernal panic on my Mac which hard crashes. I see 3 partitions when attempting to mount one of which is AFP. Anyone got any ideas about how to do this? I've dug around but the only progress I've made is to note others have had to work around ACL's when replacing the logic board of the TC. Not sure if this even relates to the problem. However the tool for doing this seems to have been removed from SL. (Forum references to this procedure all relate to 10.5).

I have a cable to connect the two devices but, unlike my PC (which I am hoping to put away in the loft forever!) there does not seem to be a sync option in iTunes

Original purchase came with iphoto installed.  After hard drive crash new hard drive does not have iphoto app.  Anyone have any idea how to reinstall without having to purchase?  Had to install original OS X 10.6.8 Snow Leopard

    reinstall from the original source
    Could be
1 - the restore disks that came with the computer - if it came with CDs and you do not know where they are then contact Apple to see if they can be replaced = probably your case
    or
2 - the iLife DVD that you purchased
    or
3 - the app store - log in under the Apple id used to purchase the software or to set up the computer - look under purchases - you might have to unhide or accept the Application first

  • How can I sync apps again after getting a new computer without deleting?

HI folks. So I had to reinstall my computer but I have a backup of everything on a hard drive. My question is what I need to copy over to make sure that my apps can sync again without deleting my apps on my iPad currently. Every time I got to check the apps for sync it tells me the ones on my iPad will be deleted which I do not want. Looking for assistance. Thanks.

Itunes remembers what u have downloaded (free and paid apps) so if u have to 'authorize' the computer again as a new computer, (u r allowed 5) itunes will just reinstall apps and app info eg saved games scores etc will be still there after restore or update.

  • How can I sync IPod, with lots of music, to ITunes empty library?

I lost my entire ITunes library when I had to format the hard drive. Now I want to sync all the info in my iPod into this new library. I wory that the sync may go the other way and empty my IPod. When I connect the IPod to the computer it tells me that it is synced with a different library. (This must be the one that was deleted when I formatted the disk).
    Please help

1). Connect your iPod to your computer. When you get the message that it is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, press "Cancel". Pressing "Erase and Sync" will irretrievably remove all the songs from your iPod.
2). When your iPod appears in the iTunes source list change the update setting to manual, that will let you use your iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it. Check the "manually manage music and videos" box in Summary then press the Apply button. Also when using most of the utilities listed below your iPod needs to be enabled for disc use, changing to manual update will do this by default: Managing content manually on iPod and iPhone
3). Once you are safely connected there are a few things you can do to restore your iTunes from the iPod. There are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod. You'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer movies, videos, photos, podcasts and games as well. Have a look at the web pages and documentation, this is just a small selection of what's available, they are generally quite straightforward. You can read reviews and comparisons of some of them here:

If you have any iTunes Music Store purchases the transfer of purchased content only from the iPod to authorised computers was introduced with iTunes 7. You'll find details in this article: Copying iTunes Store purchases from your iPod or iPhone to a computer
There's also a manual method of copying songs from your iPod to a Mac or PC. The procedure is a bit involved and won't recover playlists but if you're interested it's available on page 2 at this link: Copying Content from your iPod to your Computer - The Definitive Guide
4). Whichever of these retrieval methods you choose, keep your iPod in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync.
5). I would also advise that you get yourself an external hard drive and back your stuff up, relying on an iPod as your sole backup is not a good idea and external drives are comparatively inexpensive these days, you can get loads of storage for a reasonable outlay: Back up your iTunes library by copying to an external hard drive

  • Can't copy to mini after desktop drive replacement

I had my mini set up to sync its Podcasts folder with my desktop PC at work (WinXP). The disk failed on that PC, and after rebuilding my system and installing iTunes, I am unable to copy Podcasts from the new desktop drive to the iPod. I had iTunes 7.01 on there before, and it was working fine. I now have 7.02, but I tried this with a co-worker's PC running an earlier version.
Actually, iTunes shows that it is copying the files, and I believe they get there. They show up under the 'Recently Added' playlist, but not under the Podcasts folder. I can play them from there, but they're not broken down into subfolders, and I can't delete them.
I don't want to set it to sync, because I'll lose the stuff that's already on the iPod. But shouldn't I be able to manually copy?
Does anybody think setting the iPod to sync Podcasts will clean this up? Or updating the iPod firmware?
Like I said, everything used to work fine, so I don't want to make any drastic changes if I don't have to.
    Thanks,
    Rob
