How can I update software on iPhone 3g from ios 3.1.3 to ios 4?

Recently been given an iPhone 3g. I had to restore the phone to sync to my iTunes. Now a lot of apps will not download as I need at least iOS 4 but the phone is iOS 3. iTunes tells me that this is the latest software for this model when I check for updates. Is there anyway to update to iOS 4?

The iPhone in question, iPhone 3g is running software version ios 3.1.3, my current iTunes is running 10.6.3. How can I update the software on said iPhone to iOS 4 from 3.1.3 if iTunes informs me that the current software is up to date.
The iPhone has pretty much been rendered useless as I can not download majority of apps. Therefore it just works as a pretty basic phone.

    Hey Guys,
How can I update software on an old iPod touch? I currently cant download any apps etc as im too out of date ;-(
    Thanks for your help ;-)

I suspect you have a 2G iPod. Those can only go to iOS 4.2.1.

    iPod touch (3rd generation)
iPod touch (3rd generation) features a 3.5-inch (diagonal) widescreen multi-touch display and 32 GB or 64 GB flash drive. You can browse the web with Safari and watch YouTube videos with Wi-Fi. You can also search, preview, and buy songs from the iTunes Wi-Fi Music Store on iPod touch.
The iPod touch (3rd generation) can be distinguished from iPod touch (2nd generation) by looking at the back of the device. In the text below the engraving, look for the model number. iPod touch (2nd generation) is model A1288, and iPod touch (3rd generation) is model A1318.

A 2G to 4.2.1. Requires iTunes version 10.X. That requires a Mac with OSX 10.5.8 or later. With 1OSX 10.4.11 you can only go to iTunes 9.X which gets you as high as iOS 4.1
A 3G to 5.1.1  Requires iTunes version 10.5 or later
A 4G to 6  Requires iTunes version 10.7 or later. For a Mac, that requires a Mac with OSX 10.6.8 or later

If your contacts are correct and up-to-date on the Mac, check out the basic syncing article:

just go to the 'info' tab after selecting the device in iTunes and sync from there.

  • How can i update my ipod 1st generation from IOS 4.2.1 to 5.0

how can i update my ipod from IOS 4.2.1 to 5.0

Update it from iTunes on a computer as described at the bottom of this article; there isn't a Software Update option in General on iOS versions prior to 5.0. It can only be updated directly to the newest iOS release supported by the device’s hardware.
The maximum iOS version for the first generation iPod touch and original iPhone is 3.1.3.
The maximum iOS version for the second generation iPod touch and the iPhone 3G is 4.2.1.
The maximum iOS version for the third generation iPod touch and original iPad is 5.1.1.
The maximum iOS version for the fourth generation iPod touch and iPhone 3GS is 6.1.6.

  • My imac is 10.5.8 how can I update software, because I can't get into itunes anymore

    I am running 10.5.8
I am now booted out of iTunes because I need the latest iTunes version, but when i try to downlaod that, I am told my software version will not support my itunes version. I am stuck between a rock and a hard place. How can I move up from 10.5.8?

Start by checking if you cn run Snow Leopard:
Requirements for OS X 10.6 'Snow Leopard'
    http://support.apple.com/kb/SP575
Whilst Apple have withdrawn Snow Leopard from their stores, you can still get it from Apple by calling 1-800-MY-APPLE (if you are in the USA) and they will supply the SL DVD for $20 for a single user, or $30 for a family pack that covers up to 5 Macs.  You can also purchase the code to use to download Lion from the same number (Lion requires an Intel-based Mac with a Core 2 Duo, i3, i5, i7 or Xeon processor and 2GB of RAM, running the latest version of Snow Leopard), or you can purchase Mountain Lion from the App Store - if you can run that:
    http://www.apple.com/osx/specs/
If you are outside the US call your national Apple Helpline:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HE57
If you're in the UK, use this number: 0871 508 4400
When you have installed it, run Software Update to download and install the latest updates for Snow Leopard.

  • How can I update software on iMac not connected to Internet

I recently gave my old iMac to my parents, and they don't currently have internet access.
Is there a way I can somehow get software and security updates installed? Was thinking maybe downloading on my computer without installing, then taking them on a flash drive to install on the non-connected computer, or something along those lines. Or maybe there's another way to obtain the updates...?

First, you need to know what you need. And somehow you will have to get your parents' Mac connected to find out what they need.
Then you can download individual updates from Apple Support. Click on View All Support Downloads in the upper right corner.
Word of caution: you don't need to constantly update the machine, in fact it's better if you don't, esp. if the machine is working properly. Check a couple of times a year; decide whether or not you really need the updates. Apply only what you need. If you poke around the forums you will discover that a lot of people cause themselves their own problems by doing automatic updates and/or not researching the update(s) first, and/or not thinking through what they're doing.

  • HT1531 how can I update my power mac g5 from 10.4.11 to 10.5?????????

I have a power mac g5. Its a powerpc processor running 10.4.11 at the moment. Before it crashed and I had it repaired it was running 10.5.8. How can i get back to that version. 10.4 is just simply not working for the applications and etc that I use. I can not even use itunes for goodness sake. Someone please help!!!!!!!
    P.S.
I currently have no disc. Lost in the process of moving from Miami

Buy a retail set of installer discs for it.

It's a pity you didn't keep a bootable clone of the drive.  The $100 in a backup drive  would have cost less than a replacement Leopard will.
