  • How can I use my iPod as source for reinstalled iTunes?

    Hello @ all.
Unfortunately I had to completely reinstall my system (WinXP Pro PC) and lost my media library!
How can I use my iPod as a source to copy all my songs and settings (incl. covers, aso) to iTunes?
    iPod: 30GBs Video iPod
    iTunes Version: 7.0.2.16
can u guys help me with that?
    Thanks very much!

The transfer of purchased content to authorised computers has been introduced with iTunes 7. A paragraph on it has been added to this article: Transfer iTunes Store purchases using iPod
The transfer of non iTMS content is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod. However there is a manual method of accessing the iPod's hard drive and copying songs back to iTunes on Windows posted in this thread: MacMuse - iPod to iTunes
If you prefer something more automated then there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod, this is just a selection. Have a look at the web pages and documentation for these, they are generally quite straightforward. You can read reviews of some of them here: Wired News - Rescue Your Stranded Tunes
    YamiPod Mac and Windows Versions
    iGadget Windows Only
    iPodCopy Mac and Windows Versions
iPod Access Mac and Windows Versions
    PodUtil Mac and Windows Versions
    iPodCopy Mac and Windows Versions
    PodPlayer Windows Only
    CopyPod Windows Only
If your iPod is set to update automatically take care when connecting back to your computer and an empty iTunes. You will get a message that your iPod is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, press "Cancel". Pressing "Erase and Sync" will irretrievably remove all songs from your iPod. Your iPod should appear in the iTunes source list from where you can change the update setting to manual and use your iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it. Check the "manually manage music and videos" box in Summary then press the Apply button. Don't uncheck Sync Music it will be unchecked by default when you choose the manual setting: Managing content manually on iPod
Whichever of these retrieval methods you choose, keep your iPod in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync again. I would also advise that you get yourself an external hard drive and back your stuff up in case you have problems again. External drives are comparatively inexpensive these days and you can get loads of storage for a reasonable outlay.

How can I use my iPod nano on more than one computer?

    Hi, China6450.
Thank you for visiting Apple Support Communities.
I would recommend setting up Manually manage music.  This will only allow music to be synced from the computer to the iPod nano.  Here are some helpful articles that will walk you through the process.

  • How can I use two Ipods on one computer.

I was wondering if it is possible to use 2 Ipods on one computer without having to reload all of the music to the new library.

If you are adding a second iPod for your own use, just connect the new iPod to your computer and follow the on screen instructions. It will update from your existing library. Depending on the size of your library and the type of iPod you choose you can have it update all songs and playlists, selected playlists only or you can manage it manually
If the iPods belong to different users then there are actually a few methods for using more than one iPod on a single computer: How To Use Multiple iPods with One Computer
Just to summarise what's in the link above which is a little out of date:
Method one is to have individual Mac or Windows user accounts which by definition would give you completely separate iTunes Music folders and libraries.
Method two is to set your preferences so that any or all of iPods get updated with only certain playlists within one library:
Loading songs onto iPod automatically - Windows
Choosing the update option "Sync Music - Selected playlists" allows you to create a playlist specifically for each iPod and drag the tracks you want into it. If you tire of the list and want to change it, you just add or remove the songs you don't want. The ones you take out out remain in the library to be used by the other iPod. You can read more about playlists at these links:
iTunes: Creating playlists of your favorite songs
How to create a Smart Playlist with iTunes
Another option when using a single library is to set any or all of the iPods to manual update: Managing content manually on iPod

  • How can i use my ipod touch as a storage device/storing photos

The suggested advice in this support article http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1478 wasn't a help at all, because the option "enable disc use" in the summary window of itunes doesn't appear. I am runnin' the latest itunes version and the latest ipod touch software, by the way.
Secondly, i have some photos on my ipod touch which a friend of mine copied from his macbook pro. Now i would like to copy them on my computer. itunes doesn't offer any option for this.
Does anyone know how to solve this problem?
    Thx in advance

    *From the article*:
    Products Affected
iTunes 7 for Mac, iTunes 7 for Windows, iPod nano, iPod shuffle, iPod mini, iPod, iTunes 8 for >Windows, iTunes 8 for Mac
No mention of the Touch, it works differently from other iPods and has no "disk mode" as such.
I think it can be used as a storage device by using a 3rd party App, search the the App Store for such items.
Photos transferred to your Touch via iTunes will be of severely compromised quality i.e 640x480 pixel resolution and file size around 600-700 kb. These can be retrieved, again using a 3rd party application on your computer, such as [Touch Copy|http://www.wideanglesoftware.com/touchcopy> but you will not get back original quality images.
    Good luck,
    Dud.

  • How can I use my iPod on a PC without losing everything???!!!

I got a new PC and put iTunes in and everything but when I try to put my iPod in it's telling me that I have to restart it!!! But I can't do that cause all the songs on it are from another computer!!! I went into a computer store and the man working there said there is someway of doing it but he can't rememder how he did it to his own one... He said you either press Yes or No.
Help!!! Anyone know???? I don't want to lose everything...
Its so stupit that Apple made them that way.

If you are using your iPod with a Windows system (particularly the former computer), you'll have more luck asking this question in the iTunes for Windows area or the Connecting iPod to Windows forum.
    Meanwhile, perhaps this will help:

  • How can I use software from mac os 8.6

I have old mac 4400/160 with os 8.6. Can I use program files from that os on os x and how?

Hi, Boopsy. Welcome to the Discussions.
By "program files" I presume you mean "applications." If you mean data files, that's a different question.
It really depends on the applications (apps).
First, they will only run in Classic mode, if they run at all. Classic mode is a "hardware compatibility layer." Basically, this allows you to run Mac OS 9 and Mac OS X simultaneously, meaning you can use Mac OS 9 apps and Mac OS X apps simultaneously. Both Mac OS X and Mac OS 9.2.2 must be installed on the computer in question.
Some Mac OS 8.x apps have been known to run in Classic, but it's really suited to Mac OS 9 apps.
Second, any apps that require direct access to the hardware — a common issue with games developed in Mac OS 9 and earlier — won't run in Classic mode.
Finally, if you buy a new Intel-based Mac, Classic is not even an option: Classic mode is not available on Intel-based Macs, signaling the true death of Mac OS 9. So, if you're planning on getting a new, Intel-based Mac, none of the OS 8.6 apps you have can be used on such. You would need a Mac that employs PowerPC architecture, which are the last Macs that can run Classic.
If you had a PowerPC-based Mac with Mac OS X and Mac OS 9.2.2 installed, you could then try installing your old apps using the original installation disks using the instructions in "Mac OS X 10.4 Help: Installing applications made for Mac OS 9." You'd probably also need an external USB floppy drive, assuming the apps are distributed on the usual 3.5" floppy disks.
However, given the items noted above, there's no guarantee they would either install or work.
    Good luck!

  • How can i use my iPod on two different computers?

I recently bought a new laptop and i plugged in my ipod shuffle but i cant add any new music to it because it was originally set up on my old laptop. Unlike other ipods, when i plug it back into the old laptop, there is no box to check like "Manually manage" or whatver. Is there any way for me to set up my ipod on my new laptop without restoring it to its original settings and losing all the other music?

If there is no Manually manage music setting, it must be a 1st or 2nd shuffle, not a 3rd or (current) 4th gen shuffle.  The older shuffles act like simple playlists.  You can only associate that shuffle with ONE iTunes library at a time (just as a regular playlist in iTunes belongs only to one iTunes library).
So, the answer is no.  However, you can put the songs on the shuffle currently into the new computer's iTunes library, then sync the shuffle to that library.
For songs that you purchased from the iTunes Store, you can re-download them on the iTunes Store Purchased screen.  You can also use iTunes to transfer songs you purchased from iPod to computer.
For other songs, you cannot use iTunes to transfer song files from iPod to computer.  But there are third-party methods and utilities that can transfer from iPod to computer.  If you do a Google search on something like "ipod transfer," you should get some links.
Once the song files are on your new computer, add them to the iTunes library by dragging the them (or the folder containing the song files) to the iTunes window.  After confirming everything is there, you can sync the shuffle to the new computer's iTunes library.

  • How can I use my iPod Touch as a remote for iTunes, while connected via USB?

I was wondering if I could use my iPod touch as a remote/iTunes extension while it is connected to my computer via usb.
It would be highly practical to control my music from there, since it is charging right by my side while I'm at my computer.
Remote is not really an option, my computer doesn't have bluetooth or any connectivity. Something over wifi would work, but there's a usb connection right there that's begging to be used.
    Thanks

You can't do it via USB.  Go to the App store and download/install the Apple Remote app.  It can control iTunes on your computer via wifi.
