When an application is running, it will automatically show up in the Dock. If you click and hold on the applciation in the Dock it will present you with a popup menu with some options. Among them is Keep in Dock.
To add a document to the Dock, note the divider between the section that contains windows and the trash, and the applications.   You can drag between the divider and the trash any documents you want instant access to.
If you drag folders to that section, clicking on the folder once there will reveal a hierarchical menu of that folder's contents.
Note all shortcuts on the Dock are just that, shortcuts, and nothing more.   Don't make the novice mistake of removing the file from the hard drive or window after putting it in the Dock. If you do, you will never be able to access that file once in the trash, or emptied.    The dock is there for instant access. It is NOT a data storage folder.

After I updated to Mavericks, all of the apps, except the Apple ones, were blown away (eg. Word and Excel in my VM).

'Open With > Other' would not show the apps in my VM. I tried.
I tried something different. I left Word open in my Parallels (Vista) VM and ignored it for a while to see if Maverics would pick it up eventually.
It did.
It seems like that it takes some time for Maverics to find the apps in a VM before we can use it in the 'Open With' menu.

How do I add FCPX to the dock? and the Furore over FCPX

I already have FCP Studio on the Dock but when I try to drag FCPX to the Dock too it will not stay in place. I also tried to change the name of either FCP 3 or FCPX to differentiate one from the other, but that wasn't allowed. Any ideas as to how I can have both applications there on the Dock?
As to all of the angst going on regarding this application I have to say that I think us pro' users of FCP have a valid point with many of the complaints flying around out there, but I have decided personally to give FCPX the benefit of the doubt for a while.......Though all of my editing that relates to work I earn a living on will remain in FCP Studio 3, and I have to admit that I did just buy a copy of Avid Media Composer 5.5 to get back up to speed with that system after years away in our FCP world. I wonder how many others out there have done the same, or have considered that route thinking that maybe Apple is going to walk away from real Pro' applications?
On one more note my local Apple re-sale dealer contacted me this week asking if I would like to buy the latest version of Final Cut Studio for $999, apparently Apple has decided to allow the one time limited "last chance" opportunity to buy the Application before finally dropping it.
Interesting times.

If you click and hold on the icon in the Dock after you have the application open, do you not get the option to "Keep in Dock" or does that not work?
And regards your second question, that sounds more like a reseller who has a few copies of FC Studio left and is trying to capitalize on the FCP X criticisms.

Hi all, just a quick question, how do you transfer apps, what have been bought or whats free to the ipod touch? i've got loads on the laptop, but can't seem to transfer to the ipod touch cheers

Go to the Applications tab, with ipod attached to itunes and select to sync apps and select the ones you want to sync - same as music, photos, videos, etc.
You have to have software version 2.0 or later on your ipod touch for this.

Deleted the app in the dock that compiles all your open files and fans them out as icons. What is it and how do I get it back?

When I bought my macbook pro, I deleted the app in the dock that complies all your open files together. When you click on the app it fans all the icons out. What is that app called and how do I find it again/get it back??

okay... got that...but before I deleted it, it would "fan" all my open web pages, or open PDF files. So they were in a little folder as opposed to lined up beside my trash bin?

To remove an application from the Dock, simply drag it off of the Dock, or right-click the app in the Dock and choose Options > Remove from Dock. Note that opened apps will always show in the Dock

Same way as always. Purchases directly for the App store on the iPod or download on your computer and sync to your iPod. To more easily find compatible apps:
iOSSearch - search the iTunes store for compatible apps.
Vintapps 3.1.3 - paid app.

You have a couple of options:
Open the photos one at a time and take a screenshot. This will add a new low resolution copy of the photo to the camera roll, which will then upload to your photo stream;
Email the photos one at a time to yourself, then save the attached photos to your camera roll. This will add a copy of the photo at full resolution to your camera roll and upload to photo stream;
Use an app like PhotoSync, which will allow you to wirelessly transfer copies of all your old photos to your computer all at once. Then delete these photos from your camera roll and use PhotoSync to transfer them back from your computer to your camera roll. These will be the original resolution and will upload to your photo stream. (You need an app like this because iTunes will not transfer photos back to your camera roll, where they must be in order to add to your photo stream.)

In your internal storage of the phone, create a folder called alarms. Then copy or move the audio files to that folder.

Can not add items to the dock

I can not add icons to the dock, I am able SOMETIMES to edit the dock (moving icons around or delete them), there is no rule, sometimes I can grab the icon on the dock, and sometimes I just can't (I have the pop up when I can't) , I deleted users/username/library/preferences/com.apple.dock.plist and issued a killall dock command, with no difference.
any help will be appreciated

Welcome to Apple Discussions.
The Dock did not return to default on that command?
Try again and also delete username/Library/Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist
If it's still no-go create a new User go to System Preferences >> Accounts >> "+" (make it an admin acct) and test the Dock in this new account, if it works the problem is isolated to your User and not systemwide.
Let us know.
EDIT: Also are you running any enhancement software?
