How do I back up my contacts from my iPhone to iTunes

My mobile phone carrier (optus) is preparing us for the delivery of the IPhone 4, and to get ready they are changing us from our old SIM card to a new "MicroSIM". I am confused with step 1...
Step 1. Connect your current iPhone to iTunes to back up your contacts as you will need to move them from your old SIM to the new SIM (which I have ready to go)....How do i do this? Am i just syncing my contacts with my yahoo address book. This doesn't seem right.
the other steps I think I'm okay with...
2. swap the SIM over, and follow some steps with my phone carrier
3. sync iPhone to Itunes again to restore contacts
4. SIM swap is complete, and this new "microSIM" is ready to go when the new iPhone 4 is delivered.

thanks for your reply, but Im still a little confused.
I do currently have an iPhone 3G, and they want me to use theis new SIM card until delivery of my new iPhone 4.
So, the contacts that i currently have in my phone are different to my contacts in my yahoo account. My yahoo account basically just has all email addresses and that's it.
So, do I have to update my yahoo contact list first, then "sync"? Does this then mean I've backed them up also?
Or, when I sync, will it take my contacts from my phone into iTunes and my yahoo account??

All sorted! dont suppose you know how to fix another problem I have??? for weeks now, since updating to ios5 I think, for some reason every time I have tried to log onto app store it says CANNOT CONNECT TO ITUNES STORE. It's nothing to do with my computer, and I've been to the Geniius bar but they couldnt help and nothing I seem to do lets me update my Apps and even worse, I cant even buy any more. Any suggestions?

If the device has been used as designed, contacts would be synced to a supported application on the computer or a cloud service. If the device has regularly been synced and backed up to iTunes on the computer, simply plug it in and allow the sync/backup to occur.
If the device has never been synced/backed up to a computer, it is not possible to force one without a working screen.

Back it up in iTunes! Just make a backup of the entire device but make sure you check sync contacts and the option to add contacts from phone to address book on computer.

I assume by "email", you mean an email account such as Gmail, Yahoo or and exchange account. To get these contacts in iCloud do the following:
Go to Settings>iCloud, turn Contacts to Off, choose Delete from My iPhone when prompted (your iCloud contacts will still be in iCloud).
Download the app My Contacts Backup. (If you have more than 500 contacts to transfer from your email account you will need the “Pro” version.) Use the app to back up the remaining contacts on your phone (from your email account) as a vCard attachment to an email that you send to yourself. Confirm that you have received the email.
Go to Settings>iCloud and turn Contacts back to On.
Go to Settings>Mail,Contacts,Calendars>Default Account (in the Contacts section), and set this to iCloud.
Go to Settings>Mail,Contacts,Calendars...tap the email account you are syncing these contacts with and turn off contacts syncing with with this account. Otherwise you will end up with duplicate contacts on your phone.
Open the My Contacts Backup email and tap the attachment to import the contacts from the email account back to your phone, and to iCloud. All your contacts should now be in iCloud.

Try using the app My Contacts Backup, which will back up your contacts as an attachment to an email. Send this email to yourself, open it on your Mac and double-click the attachment to import them to Address Book (or Contacts if you have Mountain Lion).

OK. First, sync your old phone to create a current backup. Then on your new phone: Settings>General>Reset>Erase All Content & Settings. Once complete...will take just a minute or so...follow the directions here:

Iphone 4s trying to restore contacts from old iphone via itunes backup

I recently upgraded my old iphone 3gs to a 4s. I know way behind the times. I backed up the 3gs to both the icloud and to my mac via itunes before I went to the store. Next day all my contacts are gone, try to sync to the icloud only to find out the they must of overwrote my icloud contacts via a backup from the 4s some how. Again think no problem I will just restore via itunes, when I restore though it starts up like it is brand new asking how I would like to set it up. I choose via itunes and it asks me to connect to itunes. I am already connected and the screen doesn't change on the 4s no matter how long I wait. I desperately need these contacts and am looking for some help either using itunes are getting more creative by manually pulling them out of the backup some how. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

One thing to try, is to create a new login account on you computer.
Log into that account and open address book.
Create one contact in address book.
Now open itunes.
Once through the initial setup, connect the iphone.
Now go to the info tab and check to sync contacts.
You should get the option to merge data.
If this works, there is still something corrupt in your address book.
Try exporting all you contacts then delete all out of address book.
Quit address book and reopen.
Create a new test contact, then try syncing with iphone.
