How do I back up my MacBook Pro to a network storage drive?

My Time machine is not working for some time now and I can not back up my data. I recently bought a network-added storage for backing up data from iMac and Macbook Pro. Time machine back up on Western Digital network hard drive did not work. Is there any otehr way to back up all data from my Macbook pro to teh NAS drive?

schmunzelmonster, greetings;  Your suggestion is a good one.  CCC does create a boot drive which as you point out can be most useful at times. Time Machine does not have that capability but it retains a history of activities and transactions that CCC does not.  CCC only retains information as of the last update.
Neither individually is the 'perfect' backup solution individually, but if both are utilized it becomes that.  There is no harm in backup redundancy.
My only complaint about CCC is that is is very slow in performing updates compared with Time Machine.  Just a nit on my part.
Ciao.

  • How do I back up my MacBook Pro from an external hard drive if my macbook won't boot up from the white start up screen? HELP!

I went to the Genius Bar a week ago, and the guy helping me there was nice enough to help me save some money by telling me I could replace the bad hard drive my MacBook Pro had by myself. I bought everything I needed (hard drive, screws, external hard drive) and my computer won't boot past the white start up screen. It doesn't even show the Apple sign at the start up screen. How do I back up my computer so I can save all my music, school files, etc.? Could really use someone's advice on what to do! Thanks!

Ok, to be sure I understand what's going on. You were able to boot the Macbook from the existing "damaged" internal drive, and it has been backed up to the internal.
If that is correct, your internal drive is working. Just to be sure, try booting with the R key down. Then run Disk Utility to repair the internal drive. That drive may in fact be useable.
You should be aware that you cannot boot the MBP from a Time Machine back up.
Please post back so I am sure I am understanding the situation.

How do I back up my MacBook Pro to icloud, and do I need a separate device

Your Mac can't be backed up to iCloud.
If you have an external disk drive, you can set  up Time Machine to backup your MBP to it.

My guess would be it has created an entirely new backup of your drive when you upgraded to Mavericks.

  • How do I back up my macbook pro information to an external hard drive.  I was told you just plug it in to the computer and because it is set up to work automatically, it should just do it automatically.  However, the clock is just circling top right?

How do I back up informtion on my Macbook pro to an external hard drive?  I was told all you need to do is plug in the hard drive to the computer, and it will back up automatically, which it is set to do.  But all that is happening is the clock a the upper right of the page is revolving and the clock by my vault on the left is revolving, but there is no information as to mega or giga being copied.

  • How can I back up a Macbook Pro with Bootcamp

Ok, so I have a 13" Macbook Pro (non-Retina) that's about 5 months old. There's loose wiring in the display, causing strange symptoms with my screen. There also seems to be something stuck in the fan, as it rattles around really loudly from inside the computer and I'm afraid it will jam and overheat. Both of these should be covered under my 1 year warranty.
If I send it into Apple or an AASP, I'm going to assume my data will be lost. I don't know how I can back up my computer so that when I get it back I can just copy across and have everything how I left it. I have Windows 7 installed with Photoshop and some games/save games that I really would not like to be lost. I have an external hard drive that should be big enough to back up both partitions. If I make it a time machine, I will lose the normal external hard drive functionality and doubt it will back up Windows too. Is there a way for me to back up both MacOSX and Windows 7 so that when I get my computer back, everything is how I left it? Thanks.

Disk Utility format Pattition 1 Option GUID OS X extended journaled a blank powered external drive, use Carbon Copy Cloner for OS X partition (also copies the hidden Recovery also just in case)
You can hold the option/alt key on a wired keyboard and boot from it to confirm it's working to later reverse clone (to the same Mac model on a new drive) or use Migration Assistant to a new Mac to transfer files and apps.
    Most commonly used backup methods
For BootCamp clone and restore, use WinClone 3 on another external drive.
What the format for the external drive is and how to restore BootCamp from that drive I do not know, they can tell you how to go about it.
TimeMachine is well, TimeMachine, should also do that as well for OS X to have two backups at all times.

  • How to delete back up from MacBook Pro?

I recently gave my old MacBook Pro to my daughter. To make sure all the APPs etc stayed on it I simply created her a user account  with admin rights and deleted my user account. The problem is now half of the hard drive seems to be full of back ups which I am assuming are from my old account. I had always backed up to an external hard drive via Time Capsule.
How can I delete these from the old computer to free up space for her ?

Those are 'local snapshots'... they will 'self-delete' after one week, so there's nothing to worry about. When you delete data, the snapshots of that data remain for one week and then they're gone (along with the data that you trashed).
It's just a TM 'safety net'!

  • How do i back up a macbook air to an external hard drive

I want to back up my macbook air. How do I back it up to an external hard drive?

You must first partition and format the drive for use with OS X. If the drive is at least twice the capacity of your MBA's drive, then you can use Time Machine if you wish. Or you can simply clone your drive to the external drive so  you can boot from it. Use Disk Utility:
Clone Mavericks, Lion/Mountain Lion using Restore Option of Disk Utility
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
         1. Select Disk Utility from the main menu then press the Continue
             button.
         2. Select the destination volume from the left side list.
         3. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
         4. Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it
             to the Destination entry field.
         5. Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to
             the Source entry field.
         6. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the external backup drive. Source means the internal startup drive.

  • HT3275 How do I back up my MacBook Pro to Time machine (capsule)?

I have time capsule installed as the wireless server and it is backing up the iMac desktop.  I was told I could back up all the computers,  When I select disk on the macbook, it doesn't list the time machine drive.  Do I need to connect the laptop directly in order to back it up?

If the MBP is already connecting to the network via the TC it is just being difficult. (It is incredibly difficult at the moment as apple have some built in bugs in Lion and ML).
Use finder and go, go to server. Type in the actual TC name. Thusly..
    AFP://TCname
If the MBP still cannot find the TC.. reboot it.. it should then work.. it is like olden day electronics .. sometimes you need to give it a swift kick to get it going.
(Please do not actually physically kick anything.. I was being metaphorical!!)

  • How do I easily transfer itunes back to my Macbook Pro?

I transferred my whole iTunes folder from my Macbook Pro onto my Time Capsule in order to save space on my Macbook Pro. However this has caused plenty of problems especially when opening iTunes on my Macbook and it not being able to find the library. I have to physically locate it myself.
I've since read on here that you should only move your iTunes Media Folder and keep the rest where they are, so maybe I should have done that instead of moving the whole folder!
There are plenty of tips and advice on this forum in relation to where you should, or shouldn't store your itunes folder and/or library and I'm not a little confused. Some people say never store your itunes on the Time Capsule as this is only for backups and connect a separate external HD to your Macbook, but that doesn't make my Macbook very portable!! So I now don't know what to do for the best. If I transfer everything back to my Macbook Pro it will probably take a couple of days like it did do transferring it to the Time Capsule.
Could I just delete iTunes and back up the library then reinstall it and start again from scratch?? I really don't know what to do and any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks

Assuming you still have the CD's and they are still readable:
Delete everything "jumbled" from your iTunes Library.
Insert the CD, and do not read them into iTunes, but copy them instead  into a folder with the name you want in your iTunes Library afterwards, insert the next CD and copy it into a second folder (different name), etc.
Then put the first folder into Yourname/Music/iTunes/iTunes Music/Automatically Add To iTunes folder.
Start iTunes and see it appear in the iTunes Library. Close iTunes, do the same with the next folder, etcetera
That was excessively complicated, and NOT how you import CD's into iTunes.  I have imported nearly 1000 CD's into iTunes and never once, not once, have I fulled around with folders.  That is done in preferences.  That's not how iTunes works.  William needs to post his question to the iTunes for Mac forum, where much easier solutions will be provided.

  • How can I get the old view of iCal back on my MacBook Pro and iPhone?

How can I get the old view of iCal back on my MacBook Pro and iPhone?  The Mavrick version is crisp and clean but a colored dot is not the same as a highlighted word. I rely on my iCal on my MacBook Pro and iPhone 5 to help me track which of the 8 sites I visit for my job during the week - the color coding is (was key) to organizing and tracking meetings.  I hate the upgrade!

If purchased through the Mac App Store then it can be installed on up to five authorized CPUs. Otherwise, it's controlled by the license that came with the software.
To install on another computer copy the downloaded installer application to the other computer.

So eventually you could end up using more data space in a back-up drive than the original drive, huh?
    With TimeMachine, yes.
With a bootable clone, no. Provided you don't save the backup states changes which CCC is doing now.
I prefer a straight clone backup, I keep many copies of clones on seperate hardware to "go back in time" with and thus avoid saving the changes with my clones.
I swear I tried to back up my computer on a 250g G-Drive and it told me there was not enough room. But I am not positive if the entire drive was available or not. I may have had it sectioned into 150 & 100 sections and I might have tried to back it up on the 150 section. or I might be imagining that.... either way, it didn't work.
Your data is going to grow, 232GB is rather small for a boot drive.
So your going to be needing storage drives eventually, just plan ahead and remmeber hardware redundancy is key.
