How do I backup my iPhoto Library to an external hard drive and keep my photos grouped by their events?

How can I backup my iPhoto Library to an external hard drive and keep my photos grouped by their events?

I have attempted to make sure my iPhoto library has been backed up on the external hard drive and that it is safe to delete some events from my internal hard drive
You need to think this through.
Time Machine is a back up application. It keeps a rolling back up of the data. It's called rolling because it means you can revert to the data you had on a specific date and time. But that's not eternal, and as time goes by, and your drive fills up, older backups are deleted. So if you delete Events on your Mac they will - eventually - also be deleted from the Time Machine back up.
If you wan tot archive data hendon't use Time Machine for that job. Here's how you might archive an iPhoto Library:
Make sure the drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
1. Quit iPhoto
2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
Now you have two full versions of the Library.
3. On the Internal library, trash the Events you don't want there
Now you have a full copy of the Library on the External and a smaller subset on the Internal
Some Notes:
As a general rule: when deleting photos do them in batches of about 100 at a time. iPhoto can baulk at trashing large numbers at one go.
You can choose which Library to open: Hold down the option (or alt) key key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library'
You can keep the Library on the external updated with new imports using iPhoto Library Manager

  • How do I backup my iphoto library from an external hard drive to an online storage service?

I moved my iPhoto library from my iMac to an external hard drive because I was running low on memory on my computer.  I decided I wanted to backup my computer files with an online service since I no longer have the external hard drive as a backup.  I am using ZipCloud and have tagged my iPhoto library to be backed up (it is called "Rebuilt Library").  I can see "Rebuilt Library" on my online backup files but it doesn't contain my pictures, just a few folders and some random data files.
I started using ZipCloud before I deleted my iPhoto library from my hard drive so all of my pictures except the ones from the last month or two are backed up online under the files of my main hard drive; indeed they show up under "Rebuilt Library" there in nice folders separated by year and then event.   I would feel better if I could get the newer pictures on there as well.
Does anyone know how I can get these files backed up to an online service?
    Thank you.

What version of iPhoto are you using?  Is your library a package when on your Mac?  Does that package remain a package when backed up to ZipCloud or is it just a folder? How big is your library?  What's the library size as determined by the Finder?
The photos will be stored in subfolders inside the Originals folder or Masters folder inside the library folder/package.  You are running a Managed library, right?
I'm not familiar with ZipCloud but it might not handle OS X packages properly.

how do I move my iphoto library from one external hard drive to another?

Drag it there in the Finder and then launch iPhoto with the Option key held down. Point it to the new instance of the library.

  • I copied my iPhoto library to an external hard drive and all the event windows are black. Once you click on a square the photos are still there. How do I fix that?

I copied my iPhoto library to an external hard drive and the event windows show up black.
The photos are still there once I click on an event but they don't show in the window.
My next step is to delete the iPhoto library from the internal memory to free some memmory space but I don't want to do this until I see that the library works fine on the external hard drive.
    How do I fix that?

Hold down the "option" + "command" keys and launch iPhoto.
    Select the "Rebuild Thumbnails" choice.

  • I have tried transferring my iphoto library to my external hard drive and it's not working.

I have a Macbook Pro. I have recently gotten into photography and to save space on my internal hard drive, I bought an external hard drive to keep all of my photos on. It's a Toshiba with 1 TB of memory. I have searched and searched on how to transfer my iphoto library to it and I'm getting the same answer. I open two finder windows, one with pictures open, the other with the external hard drive open. I have tried to drag the iphoto library icon to the second window to the external hard drive and instead of it staying there and loading everything it gives me the circle with a diagonal line through it and floats back up to the pictures finder window. I'm not sure what the problem is, but I really need help!

you need to make sure the drive you are moving the iphoto library to is formatted in the mac OS extended journaled format
you can view and/or change this in the disk utility which is found in the utilities folder in applications within finder.
on the left side select the external HD and then click on the erase tab it will show you the format it's currnetly in, if it's not mac OS extended journaled select that from the drop down and then hit the button that says erase.
after the erase is complete try the article i gave you again to move the location of the lbrary and it should work.
    good luck

  • IPhoto Library moved to External Hard Drive and need help moving library

Hi - Recently I had my hard drive replaced. I purchased Disk Warrior and moved all files to my external hard drive. Now that my hard drive has been replaced, I'm having trouble moving all my photos back to iPhoto. Nearly all of my 8K+ photos are blurry after I import and enlarge. The ones that are fine have dimensions of or more than 1K x 1K. The digital photos that I moved and are blurry when enlarged are 340x360 (hundreds range). How can I correct?
    Thanks so much in advance.
    Audra

I think I might need to back up ---- So I had a failing hard drive, went to Apple and purchased Disk Warrior. Installed Disk Warrior and tried to recover everything from my hard drive. Then all that was recovered was supposedly moved to my external hard drive. I have now received my computer back with the new hard drive. I plug in my external hard drive and have been trying to move all my images from the external hard drive to iphoto. In both places (external HD and when the photos are imported), the image is at the lower dimensions.
    Thanks for your time.

  • How do I recover my iPhoto library from an external hard drive?

I have an ancient iMac (2006!) that has housed my photos in iPhoto ever since.  I have the iPhoto library backed up (using Time Machine) on an external hard drive .  Well, my computer has finally given up the ghost and won't turn on.  The repair shop says it's not worth the money to repair it any longer, which I don't doubt.  Before I let them dispose of it, I want to make sure I can move my iPhoto library to my husband's (2013) laptop.  When I click on the iPhoto library that shows on the external hard drive menu, iPhoto opens but tells me that it cannot use a backup library as a main library.  What do I do?  How can I move the backup library onto another device?  OR do I need to retrieve the photos somehow from my kaput desktop computer?

You can restore the library file from the Time Machine backup to a hard drive. Please visit Pondini's Time Machine FAQ for help with all things Time Machine where you will find out how that is done. Or you can simply copy your iPhoto Library file from the computer's /Home/Pictures/ folder to any external device in order to move it to another computer. Do not forget the preference file(s) located in the /Home/Library/Preferences/ folder: com.apple.iPhoto.plist. Also, from the same location copy: com.apple.iPhoto.LSSharedFileList.plist if it is there.

  • How do you move your iphoto library to an external hard drive--step by step because I dont even know the basics--Help!

I have no more space on my hard drive and my computer keeps freezing.  I would like to move my 10,000 photos from IPHOTO to an external hard drive but dont know how to do it.  I am reading answers to similiar questions but dont know how to do even the simplest instructions like "after you quit Iphoto how do you copy the iphoto library from our pictures folder to the external disk????"  Ugghhh I have no idea how to do this.  Please help a busy mom of three who sits here for an hour and just spins her wheels!!!

Make sure the external drive is formatted Mac OS extended (journaled), quit iPhoto, drag the iPhoto library to the external drive, depress the option key, launch iPhoto and use the select library command to select the iPhoto library on the external drive
Fully test the library. Once you are sure it is totally ok delete the old library - test one more time prior to emptying the trash
Check and make sure that your backup system is backing up yor external drive

  • How do I backup the iTunes Library to an external hard drive?

I have no space on my computer anymore for anything and I need to export and save all my music on an external hard drive (MYbook) is that possible??? Do I really need to just backup everything on OUTDATED CDs or what???!!! That just seems like an insane process and I know it's possible for MAC users...

*Fast backup for iTunes library (Windows Only)*
Grab SyncToy 2.1, a free tool from MS. This can be used to copy your entire iTunes library (& other important data folders) onto another hard drive or network share. You can then use SyncToy periodically to synchronise or echo your library to the backup. A preview will show which files need to be updated giving you a chance to spot unexpected changes and during the run only the new or updated files will be copied saving lots of time. And if your media is all organised below the main iTunes folder then you should also be able to open the backup library on any system running the same version of iTunes.

  • I need to get my iPhoto library off my external hard drive and onto my new Imac

I  just purchase a new iMac.  I've been trying to get my old iPhoto library onto my new iMac from my old iMac.  I have the tower and when we tried to connect the new computer with the tower back up of course it did not work so I've had to transfer everything manually.  The latest thing I'm working on is my iPhoto library with over 22,000 pictures.  How can do this without losing the quality of my pictures.  I can open them through my external hard drive on iPhoto, but I really want them on the actual computer.  I've read several places that importing my iPhoto library would be a mess and I don't want that either.  HELP.  Everyone says it's a mess but I don't see any solutions.

If you have an iPhoto Library on your new Mac and it contains photos you want to keep then rename it before you copy the library from your old Mac.

  • How do I put my iTunes library onto an external hard drive and accessible?

I am thinking of investing in external hard drives to hold my itunes library and then streaming this using a streamer. Does anyone else do this. I am not sure how this would wirelessly or over ethernet. Ideally wireless since I don't have many ethernet ports in the house

IMHO, a NAS connected to your router would fit the bill perfectly.
    Ideally wireless
if your network is wireless-n capable, it should work fine. however, i have all my gear hardwired to my network and thus have no hands-on experience using wireless.
I don't have many ethernet ports in the house
    there are ethernet switches.

I am trying to copy my iPhoto Library to an external hard drive and keep getting an Error -36. How can I copy the library successfully?

It's more likely there's a problem with the library like Eric proposed.  Try his suggestion and if that doesn't help try Deleteplz's suggestion.

  • How do I transfer iPhoto library to an external hard drive?

How do I transfer my iphoto library to an external hard drive. Dragging it does not seem to work.

Erasing the drive won't affect the content of the iPhoto library. If you don't want to reformat that drive, buy another.
Even if you do install software which enables the Mac to write to NTFS drives, the volume containing an iPhoto library needs to be formatted as Mac OS Extended.

  • I moved my iPhoto library to a external hard drive to free up space on my iMac per instructions, but the library is still on my iMac so I don't have much room left.  How do I get rid of the all the contents of my library on my iMac so just on backup drive

As per Apple instructions, I moved my iPhoto library to an external hard drive so that I could free up space on my full iMac.  However, I was not told the last step in the process -- How do I get the iPhoto library off my iMac so I free up that memory?

And after deleting the old Library, you should start up iPhoto while holding down the Option key in order to force iPhoto to let you select your iPhoto Library that is on your external hard drive.  If you start up iPhoto the usual way, it will just create a new, blank iPhoto Library in your /users/yourusername/Pictures folder on your iMac's internal hard drive.
