How do I block a popup window that I have allowed to open on Firefox once? I now have the popup blocker set to block all sites, but the popup still opens every time I open Firefox or open (sometimes) a new tab.

How do I block a popup? I allowed this popup to open once. Now I have set the popup blocker to block all sites but this popup still opens every time I open Firefox and sometimes (usually) when I open a new tab.
I Have stopped and restarted Firefox multiple times.
I have rebooted the computer.
I have set the tools/options/content/block pop-up windows/exceptions to block all sites (no exceptions).
I have no other issues with Firefox.
I have Adblock plus (with (1) subscription) installed
I am currently using Firefox version 4.0 on Windows7 Ultimate.

Just to address the last point: check your History menu to see whether you have the Restore Previous Session option and use that if you can. If that is grayed out or doesn't restore everything, check the Recently Closed Windows and Recently Closed Tabs lists for other pages.
The unwanted window may be generated by an add-on. Try disabling ALL nonessential or unrecognized extensions on the Add-ons page. Either:
* Ctrl+Shift+a
* "3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons
In the left column, click Extensions. Then, if in doubt, disable.
Usually a link will appear above at least one disabled extension to restart Firefox. You can complete your work on the tab and click one of the links as the last step.
Any improvement?
Here are some other things to check:
(1) user.js file that changes Firefox startup behavior and overrides your preferences. This article describes how to track that down and delete it if you have one: [[How to fix preferences that won't save]].
(2) Possible hijacked shortcut. Check the "target" of the desktop icon you use to start Firefox to see whether it lists the unwanted page. To do that:
right-click the icon > Properties > Shortcut tab
For 64-bit Windows 7, the Target should be no more and no less than this:
"C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe"
(3) Possible undisclosed bundle items. If you have installed any free software recently, check your Windows Control Panel, Uninstall a program for surprises. If you click the "Installed on" column head to group by date, it is easier to spot bundled junk. Remove everything suspicious or unrecognized.
(4) Supplemental clean up scans. Our support article lists tools other Firefox users have found helpful: [[Troubleshoot Firefox issues caused by malware]].
Hopefully that cures it.

  • How do I stop one extra tab from opening every time I start Firefox?

Every time I open Firefox, my Yahoo homepage opens, but an additional page also opens which has a variety of website thumbnails and nothing else on that page.
In my Options, I have ONLY www.yahoo.com selected as my homepage, so only ONE page should be opening every time I start Firefox.
However, no matter what I do, this second page continues to open every time. It's very irritating, as half the time I've already begun to enter data into my homepage, then the second page pops up and switches to that and I'm typing on that page.
    Please advise.

    @jscher2000
Thank you!! That fixed the problem. The only add-ons I have are for my anti-virus software WebRoot, but somehow I must have installed Speed Dial without realizing it.
That fixed the problem. Greatly appreciated!!

  • When I open firefox it is returning to the last viewed page instead of my homepage even though I have the settings set to clear history every time I close Firefox. I check and all of the previous history is still there and not deleted..

Make sure that Firefox closes properly and that that there are no longer Firefox or plugin-container processes left on the Processes tab in the Task Manager. Otherwise session restore will reopen the page(s) from the previous session.

  • Plugincheck opens in a tab every time I start Firefox.

Lately, every time I start Firefox, I get two tabs: one with my homepage (which I expect), and the other tab is https://www.mozilla.com/en-US/plugincheck/. The plugincheck tab is in the foreground and quite annoying. Why did this start happening? How can I stop it?

What is the value of the pref plugins.update.notifyUser on the <b>about:config</b> page?
To open the <i>about:config</i> page, type <b>about:config</b> in the location (address) bar and press the "<i>Enter</i>" key, just like you type the url of a website to open a website.<br />
If you see a warning then you can confirm that you want to access that page.<br />
You can use the Filter bar at to top of the about:config page to locate a pref more easily.

  • How to block popup windows that opens up on clicking a link?

    Hi,
How to block pop-up windows that opens up when a link is clicked? The feature in IE is to set the Blocking level as 'High: Block all pop-ups (Ctrl + Alt to override)' in Pop-up Blocker settings.
Is there a similar feature in Mac?
    Thanks & appreciate the support

In the menu bar, Safari > Preferences > Security > Web Content
Some popups will not be blocked by this method, but blockable popups will be.

  • How do i stop the popup window that keeps asking me to import my bookmarks to firefox "hey there! do you want to backup your bookmarks by importing them to firefox?" It keeps popping up and its really annoying. Help!!!

it happens every time i turn firefox on. FYI: i do have firefox private browsing on (if that makes a difference).

    I think I solved it.
I searched my extensions folder (in my profile) for all image files (PNG and JPG), and found the pop-up images to be in an extension folder related to Firefox Sync (not an external extension, actually). But even though I had already disabled it and un-linked this computer from Firefox Sync, the message still popped-up.
I think the image filename was SYNC.PNG, or something like that. Close Firefox, find the folder where that image is in, and rename the main folder (the one right under the extensions folder) to some other name (such as "original name_copy"). Then start Firefox. Check if it works OK and if the pop-up ceases to appear. If everything OK, then you can delete that folder.
If something goes wrong, just rename the folder to what it was before.

  • HT1364 I have moved my library to an external hard drive and changed the location of the iTunes media folder in Preferences, but every time I close and re-open iTunes, I have to do it all over again.  How can I make the iTunes media folder change permanen

I have moved my library to an external hard drive and changed the location of the iTunes media folder in Preferences, but every time I close and re-open iTunes, I have to do it all over again.  How can I make the iTunes media folder change permanent?  I have an older machine with Windows XP.

I don't believe mounting the hard drive should be necessary, unless you have several external drives and want your computer to recognise them as folders, rather than drives. I've never had to mount a hard drive, ever. If you don't know how to do it, then it shouldn't be necessary now.
    Try this:
Prepare iTunes so that it can see the external drive.
Make a note of which drive-letter the external drive has been allocated. (Look in Windows Exploer)
Look at the file location for a song. Make sure it plays (and therefore that iTunes has found it). Highlight it and select File/Get Info/Summary>Where: and make a note of the drive letter for that song.
Close and shut down the computer.
The next time you turn the computer on again, connect the external drive
Before you start iTunes - check the external drive in Windows Explorer. Is it ready, does it have the same drive-letter that it had last time? Can you go into the drive and see the files on it?
Once you can, start iTunes. (If the drive lettter has changed, you need to work out why before going any further.)
If iTunes fails to find your external drive, you need to check where iTunes is looking for your Library.
Select the same song you checked before (presumably iTunes can no longer find it). Follow the procedure for locating it. You should be able to see where iTunes thinks the file is. It's the drive that counts. Which drive letter is iTunes looking at? Is it the same one that it was previously (which should also be the same one that the drive has now).
What happens, which step do you have problems with?

  • How come I have to put in a keychain password every time safari or mail is opened? Is there a way I can disable it or save the password so it doesn't pop up every time?

How come I have to put in a keychain password every time safari or mail is opened? Is there a way I can disable it or save the password so it doesn't pop up every time? Also, I have my mail account set up from my Yahoo! account and every time I open mail, it asks for the password for my Yahoo! account. I have checked save this password to keychain and it persists on popping up repeatedly.

You don't want to disable keychain (if there's even a good way to do so), since it stores stuff like certificates and the such.  It's quite useful.
Anyways, Keychains>Preferences>First Aid.  Check Set Login Keychain as default.  When you login, it unlocks the keychain.
    That should help you.

  • Windows asks "Do you want the following program to make changes to this computer?" every time I start Firefox.

Neither my shortcuts nor my firefox.exe have Run As Administrator checked. And yet I get this prompt every time I start Firefox on my new laptop with Windows 7 Professional 64-bit.

unchecking "Run this program as an administrator" under the Compatibility tab in the properties of the program was my first guess....darn.
Ok I understand that this is only happening in Firefox. If you start it in safe mode does this still happen? This will tell you if its an add on or a changed configuration:[[Troubleshoot Firefox issues using Safe Mode]]
