How do I change the apple ID for icloud on my mac?

I am trying to change the apple ID associated with icloud on my mac. My husband had set it up and now I need to change everything to me but it keeps asking for his apple ID & password which I don't have. I have lost contacts and need to get them from the cloud but am not having any success.

To change the ID, go to System Preferences>iCloud, click Sign Out, then sign back in with the ID you want to use.

When you go into iCloud there is an option to delete the account. The help desk advised me that using this option only deletes it on the phone and not the actual Apple ID. If you delete it you are given an option to keep content associated with this ID on the phone, which may be a good idea unless you want to completely refresh your phone.
Once you delete the account, you can then enter a new Apple ID.
I've just done it and it worked fine, leaving the original Apple ID intact and working on another phone.

It keeps asking for the password for my old ID and will not allow me to change the ID for iCloud in my phone. I have logged out using my Apple ID in settings and signed in again. If you have not used your second appleID for iCloud before, you can just go to settings and then iCloud, and delete your account there. When prompted, do NOT delete your data from the phone. Then sign in with your second Apple ID, and it will push all your data to the second AppleID and make it an iCloud account.

How do you change the Apple ID for my iPhone 4. I am able to access my iTunes account using my new ID and password on my computer; however, my iphone has a different Apple ID and I do not have cannot access iTunes on this phone.

Also, if you have iCloud, you will probably also want to change the iCloud account on the phone to be yours:
Settings>iCloud - if Account is not yours, go to the bottom and Delete Account. Then sign back on with your iCloud account info.

How do I change the email account for icloud on my iphone6 only. I don't want to change my ipad or my husband's iphone6. Currently all 3 devices have the same gmail account associated with them. I have created a new & separate apple id and I want that on my phone but I can't figure out how to delete his email from my phone.

To change iCloud accounts you have to go to Settings>iCloud, sign out, then sign back in with your other ID to create your new account. If you want to migrate a copy of the iCloud data to the new account, start by saving any photo stream photos that you want to keep to your camera roll (unless already there) by opening your my photo stream album, tapping Select, tapping the photos, tap the share icon (box with upward facing arrow), then tapping Save Image. If you are syncing notes with iCloud that you want to keep, you'll need to open each of your notes and email them to yourself so you can later copy and paste the text into new notes created in your new account. Then go to Settings>iCloud, tap Sign Out, choose Keep on My iPhone and provide the password to turn off Find My iPhone when prompted. Then sign back in with your new Apple ID to create your new account and choose Merge to upload the data to your new account. Once you are on a separate account you can go to iCloud.com and delete your husband's data from your account (and he can do the same with yours).
Just be aware that the current @icloud.com email address cannot be moved to the new account, nor can the current my photo stream album (which is why you need to save any my photo stream photos you want to keep to your iPhone before signing out of the existing account).

You can't simply change the details.
In order to change your Apple ID or password for your iCloud account on your computer, you need to sign out of the account from your computer first, then sign back in using your updated details. (System Preferences > iCloud, click the sign out button)

You never mentioned that you didn't have access to that email. There are some specific steps you can perform to retrieve the old Apple ID password.

You can't change your ID if it's a me/mac address, otherwise;
Firstly, you need to change your details with Apple, Start here, change your country if necessary and go to manage your account.
In order to change your Apple ID or password for your iCloud account on your iOS device, you need to delete the account from your iOS device first, then add it back using your updated details. (Settings > iCloud, scroll down and hit "Delete Account")
Providing you are simply updating your existing details and not changing to another account, when you delete your account, all the data that is synced with iCloud will also be deleted from the device (but not from iCloud), but will be synced back to your device when you login again.

You have to sign out completely and then sign back in on all your devices.
