To clean the screen on your MacBook, MacBook Pro, or MacBook Air, first shut down the computer and unplug the power adapter. Dampen the included cleaning cloth with just water and wipe the screen. Do not spray liquid directly onto the screen.
Important: The bottom case of the MacBook (13-inch, Late 2009) and MacBook (13-inch, Mid 2010) uses a soft nonslip material. Use a 3M Gray Microfiber or soft dye-free, lint-free cloth to clean the bottom case.

  • How can I clean the keys on my Macbook Pro?

I got my macbook pro 7 months ago and the keys look terrible. I guess my fingers are naturally greasy, because the keys aren't as matte and rough as they were when I got the macbook; they're softer, have oil patches and are worn down. I've searched this topic everywhere but couldn't get a direct answer, and my keys need to be cleaned... Also, are they supposed to be worn down? My friend has had her macbook since last year and her keyboard is still matte and brand new, even though she doesn't clean it or use a keyboard cover. :T

I have cleaned my keys using two methods 1) with the microfiber cloth the mac came with.  I made sure the cloth wasn't very wet. 2) I used electronic wipes.  Both yielded excellent results.  Make sure your mac is turned off and the magsafe power adapter is unplugged.  I have had my current mac for 15 months and the keys do not appear to be worn at all, but I suppose it depends on how hard you type and how often.

  • How best to keep the topcase of a MacBook Pro clean to avoid aluminum splotches?

On the Apple support pages it says:
MacBook, MacBook Pro, and MacBook Air
When cleaning the outside of your MacBook, MacBook Pro, or MacBook Air, first shut down your computer and unplug the power adapter. Then use a damp, soft, lint-free cloth to clean the computer's exterior. Avoid getting moisture in any openings. Do not spray liquid directly on the computer. Do not use aerosol sprays, solvents, or abrasives that might damage the finish.

My question, though, isn't about the outside or the screen. I'm most concerned about the topcase - the area around the keyboard where your palms rest. In my experience with past MacBook Pros, after a half year or so, probably due to the erosive effect of sweat from your palms, the aluminum begins to erode and you get black splotches where the aluminum has worn away. That's what I want to avoid with my new MacBook Pro.
Is there any regular cleaning routine that anybody knows for sure prevents this from happening?
    Thanks,
    doug
p.s. I did not receive an "included cleaning cloth" with my new MacBook Pro retina 13". I asked about it while talking with AppleCare and they said they stopped including them with that model, but said they would mail me one.

Yeah, dont sweat so much when typing   You typing in an non-air conditioned dwelling?
thats nice of em', yes theres no more little lens cleaning cloths (what they are).
Ive recommended people cut out thin lamination sheets to the exact size of the palm rests and apply them to prevent nasty acid wear.
Thats so rare, youre one of the "lucky" ones I guess
It's happened with every aluminum MacBook I've owned. I don't think there is anything unusual about my palm sweat. I don't see wet blotches after working.
With my MacBook Pro 17" (late 2006) just before the AppleCare warranty expired in 2009 I went into "former New Yorker" complaining mode until they agreed to exchange the topcase. Fortunately the trackpad was experiencing problems at the same time, so it all needed to be replaced anyway.
Afterwards I got some soft adhesive pads designed specifically for that purpose for the MBP 17". (If there is a product, there must be a market for it, so it probably wasn't ALL that rare). So I know that under the pads, which are now worn done, is probably a like-new top case.
I'm wondering if I need something like that, or whether there are daily/weekly/monthly cleaning products I can use to avoid the problem.

Either buy the $99 Apple TV or

Light alcohol cleaners, like what you use for camers lenses, works.  Just do not have the soft cloth cleaning pad dripping wet ... dripping wet will allow fluid to get onto internal components.

  • I have a MS Office for Mac CD, how do I install the software onto my MacBook Pro (Retina Display)?

I have a MS Office for Mac CD, how do I install the software onto my MacBook Pro (Retina Display)? It does not have a CD drive.

If all else fails, try this.  i used to do it all the time before. might or might not work with the new office.
if you have access to another computer with a cd/dvd rom, copy the entire contents of the cd on a thumb drive.
insert the thumb drive in your MB and do the install from there.
However, if you have the newer version of MS Office, Bandit's suggestion is much better.

  • How do I change the name of my macbook pro?

How do I change the name of my macbook pro.  My full name is listed on it and I want to change that.  In the upper right hand corner it is correct but all that lists is my login name.

Mr. Pat, there are some people who still try to do that, but you are risking losing all your music, photos, email, etc. It is not for the faint of heart.  This page, albeit published in 2003 by Dr. Smoke, is still pretty valid, IMHO:

Option-shft-K will get you the Apple logo in many, but not all, fonts.
To find a font with a heart glyph use Character Viewer.
Topher Kessler provides a how-to in this CNET article. He even uses "heart" in his search example.

Not very helpful. Micron / Crucial makes maybe 2000 RAM types. If all you have is the RAM and the label you may be thin on luck.
Reading the manual +*that came with the mac*+ is one resource, regrettably rarely used before posting here.

  • How do I clear the cache in my MacBook Pro 10.9 Maverick

How do I clear the cache in my MacBook Pro 10.9 Maverick operating system? Can anyone provide step-by-step instructions. I'm a big dummy when it comes to this sort of thing.

    Hey DrSteveMc,
Thanks for the question. The following resource outlines where the cache folder is stored. Note that the Library folder is hidden by default in OS X Mavericks. To access this folder, hold down option when clicking the Go menu in Finder:
OS X Mavericks: What is the Library folder?
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH14330
Mac OS X: How to troubleshoot a software issue
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1199
If the issue does not appear to be related to preferences, a login item, or a kext file, and still persists in Safe Mode, there may be an issue with a cache file in your home folder:
    1. From the Finder's Go menu, choose Home.
    2. Open the Library folder.
    3. Drag the Caches folder to the desktop.
    4. Attempt to reproduce the issue.
    5. If issue is resolved, drag the Caches folder to the Trash.
    6. If issue persists, from the Finder's Go menu, choose Go To Folder.
    7. Go to this folder: /Library
    8. Drag the Caches folder to the desktop.
    9. Attempt to reproduce the issue.
    10. If issue is resolved, drag the Caches folder to the Trash.
    11. If issue persists, go to step 4.
    Thanks,
    Matt M.
