How do I connect another monitor to my iMac?

I would like to add another monitor to my iMac, an HD TV I am no longer using.  How can I do that? I assume I need certain cables, etc, but not sure how this works.
Thanks,
Lisa

Late 2009 iMac 20inch, and the TV is an LG about 5-6 years old.
(I am not sure about Thunderbolt!)
Thanks!

  • How do I connect another monitor

I have a 27" Imac and want to connect a second monitor, a 21" Samsung, as I did with my old 24" Imac. It appears that the Thunderbolt port should be used. What connector/cable should I use?

Mini display port to either DVI, VGA or HDMI depending on inputs you want to use on the external monitors. All the cables are available from the Apple Store. You can find them at
    http://store.apple.com/us/browse/home/shop_mac/mac_accessories/cables?mco=MTM3Nj k4NzI
This is the US store if you're in another country you will have to use that country's store.

  • How do I connect two monitors to my macbook pro?

How do I connect two monitors to my macbook pro?  This question applies to both DVI and VGA, as I might have to work with multiple sets of monitors.

The MacBookPro only has enough horsepower in the video card for one external monitor.
If you want two or more, you need a MacPro.
Or a MacBook Pro and a Remote Desktop controlled MacMini.

  • Can I use another monitor with my iMac desk top?

Can I use another monitor with my iMac desk top? Our monitor screen is going out and would like to have another option then replacing the whole thing! I think A LCD TV would be less expensive than the repairs to our iMac.( OS 10.6.8 )

Yes, but we need to know exactly which year model you have? So that we can advise you on exactly which adapter you need for you iMac.

Plus, adding that Computer Monitors make better displays than TVs and comparatively cost a little less than TVs.

  • How do I hook another monitor up to my macbook pro (2011)

How do I hook up another monitor, besides a mac display,  to my macbook pro (2011)?

Dual Link DVI allows for seriously high resolution monitors (up to 2560 by 1600 like the Apple 30inch LED Display - Not manufactured anymore), I believe HDMI has a cap of traditional 1080p (1920*1080).
Edit: according to the HDMI Wiki Article it supports resolutions MUCH higher than 1080p, it's a matter of finding a Computer Monitor that supports higher than that (as I believe most Televisions only support up FULL HD 1080p)

  • How do I connect studio monitors to my Mac?

    Hello all,
I have recently been in the market for sudio monitors for my Mac. I've narrowed it down to the Yamaha HS5. Ideally, I would have to of them. I would like to know how they would connect to my iMac since I've never dealt with studio monitors before. Would I need a quarter-inch jack? Would I need adapters? Pre-amps? I really have no idea what is needed.
    Thanks!

You'll need to split the stereo signal coming out of the Mac into two mono signals (L+R) using something like this HOSA Stereo 3.5 mm Phone Male - Two Mono 1-Tip and 1 ...
Then you would run a mono cable from the splitter to each speaker.
You'll need to check the manufacturer for the size of the connector on the speaker to size the cables correctly.
    regards

  • HT1529 how could i connect a xbox 360 to imac monitor?

i would like to connect my xbox to my imac monitor to use it as a display.

In general you would unplug the monitor from the Mac Pro and then directly connect the monitor to the xBox 360 (with the correct adapter cable, depending on which version of the xBox 360 you have). However, if you don't have permission from the owner of the lab to be connecting and disconnecting cables you shouldn't be doing that. Buy a cheap 1080p TV and use your xBox 360 at home.

  • How  do i connect 2 monitors to intel mac pro 2009 model

Your video card doesn't have (at least) two output ports?  What kind of card is it?
Run System Profiler and select Graphics/Displays on the left.  The right panel should tell you what your card is.

  • Connect a Monitor to my iMac with MiniDisplay - VGA cable

hello guys, I want to connect my monitor LG Flatron M1921A to my iMac via the Mini DisplayPort adapter - VGA, I read in the questions if the display does not support HDCP may be unable to play the video, but is it really necessary to have the screen with HDCP? if so what is the screen (cheap but good) do you recommend? if not, which cable should I use VGA or DVI? Thank for all answer

    always dvi!
vga is analogue so it require the system to make the digital signal into an analogue one and then
the monitor convert it back to digital as only old crt screens use analogue
converting signals back and forth cost quality of the image and give issues with image placement adjustments

  • HT5219 How would I connect dual monitors and also a firewire cable?  Macbook Pro (Retina)

Currently I am using two thunderbolt to DVI connectors for the dual monitors, but I am left without any firewire cable connection for my audio interface. THe only adaptor I found was another thunderbolt to firewire, but since I already used these two ports, I am left with no options. I haven't been able to find any usb to firewire cable connections.
Are there any other adapators/ports I can use that I am not aware of?

    Something like this at US$300:

    Highlights
One cable output provides instant access to eight ports
Ability to daisy-chain up to five additional Thunderbolt devices
    Includes Cable-management channel
    One Gigabit Ethernet port
    One FireWire 800 port
    One Thunderbolt port
One 3.5 mm headphone output Jack
One 3.5 mm audio Input Jack
    Three USB 3.0 ports*

  • How do I connect 2nd monitor to 2010 Mac Pro?

Hi all, I'd appreciate some help as I'm a little out of my element.
I have a mid 2010 Mac Pro tower and I'm looking to add a second monitor to it for my video editing.
There is no second monitor port in the back that I'm aware of, just the one for my primary monitor.
Is there a possible way to connect a second monitor to this machine? If it requires adding another video card or something else special, links are appreciated.
Processor  3.2 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon
    Memory  8 GB 1066 MHz DDR3 ECC
Graphics  ATI Radeon HD 5770 1024 MB
    Software  OS X 10.9.5 (13F34)
    Thank you in advance

You don't need another card or USB adapter.
Your current graphics card can run up to three displays.  It has one dual-link DVI-I port and two Mini DisplayPorts.
If your new display uses Mini DisplayPort or DisplayPort, you can use a Mini DisplayPort to Mini DisplayPort or DisplayPort cable
