How do i connect iMac to hdmi TV

Hi
i have an iMac and am trying to connect it to my HDMI tv so i can watch films through my tv..
iv read about all the mini DVI things but my Imac does not have a mini DVI port as it is relitavley new, it only has 1 ethernet, 2 thunderbolt, 1 firewire and a few USB's.
I have a thunderbolt to hdmi adapter which i can plug a HDMI cable in and hook it up to my TV, how do i get the display to come up onto the TV?
My current software is LION if that would affect it any way haha
Any replies will be much appreciated

Set the TV to the input you connected the HDMI cable to.
On your computer, if you open the Displays preferences and do not see an Arrangement tab (or there is an Arrangement tab that shows only a single monitor) then there is something physically wrong with your connection.  Try clicking Detect Displays just to see if the computer can now sense the presence of the connection.  Check your cables and make sure the mini-displayport plug is pushed firmly in.  Mini-displayport (in this case same as thunderbolt plugs) plugs can be a little tricky in that you need to make sure the plug is fully seated in their socket.
If you do have an Arrangement tab, and it shows two screens, then click Gather Windows to bring the TV's Displays preferences on to your main screen if the TV is not yet showing an image.  Set the proper resolution (probably 720p, 1080i, or 1080p).  Set the refresh rate (probably 60Hz) if that preference is shown.  You should see a picture at this point.  I  recommend turning off mirrored displays if it is enabled.
You may have to play with the underscan/overscan settings on your TV and the displays prefs for the TV if the picture is too small or larger for the TV screen.
Also, you need to set your Sound preferences to output to the HDMI connection.
And if running Lion, do not run in Lion full screen mode.

In the case of using Target Disk mode between computers, a similar restriction is also present. The adapter will work in Target Disk Mode; however, it will only do so if first plugged into the system before invoking target disk mode so it can be initialized by the firmware.

  • Can I connect imac to HDMI and also Surround sound also through HDMI using the thunderbolt sockets via an adaptor into a HDMI?

I want to be able to connect my imac to my TV and Surround Sound, from what I have read the best want of doing this is both via HDMI. Before I go out and buy another adaptor for a second thunderbolt to HDMI I was wondering if this would work? I basically I want to be able to stream videos from Imac to TV with sound coming through surround sound and also when I am on itunes have the music come through the surround sound. At the moment I have an adaptor (thunderbolt to HDMI) which goes into the TV and a optical cable from TV into the surround sound, then I also have a 3.5mm from the imac to the Surround sound, but I find this lacks in quailty. Would upgrading to a HDMI work and be better ? Should I also look into an optical cable though I dont see how to connect this to the imac?

OK. From what I can tell here, the Sony HT-SF2000 has 3 HDMI inputs & one HDMI output, so the simplest hookup would be to connect the iMac to one of the the Sony's HDMI inputs via the Thunderbolt-HDMI adaptor, & connect the Sony's HDMI output to the TV's HDMI input.
Use the Sony like an HDMI input selector for the TV (plugging in your other HDMI devices, if any, to it). Use the HDMI input on it from the iMac for both movie & iTunes sound output, & for TV output for video. (You can even use the TV as a second screen for the iMac.)
If for some reason you want a separate input for the iMac's sound output, you can use the optical input on the Sony for that, with a TOSLINK cable connection to the iMac. You will need either a Mini-TOSLINK adaptor or a TOSLINK to mini-TOSLINK cable to connect to the audio output of the iMac.

  • How do I connect Monitor without HDMI (but DVI-D) to laptop with micro-HDMI?

I have a Samsung NP900x400D-A02US laptop... the video connections are:
    - a micro-HDMI
    - a "monitor port" (which the manual says supports 15 pin D-Sub interface.. or you can connect VGA adapter),
I would like to buy the Dell Ultrasharp u2412M which has 1900x1200 resolution.... BUT it does not have an HDMI port.  It has:
    - a display port
    - VGA input
    - DVI-D with HDCP Input
    - USB ports (but I don't think it's the kind that will allow me to hook up thge monitor to the laptop with USB)
How the heck do I connect the 2 of these... in a way that retains the 1900x1200 resolution?    if I can't find a good way I might have to find another monitor with HDMI....
Thanks so much for your help!   It's a bit frustrating to sort through it all....
    Kathryn

I ended up finding it by item #, because I would have missed it, too.  I wasn't sure if the product image was correct until I saw  this:
Connector on First End: 1 x HDMI (Micro Type D) Male Digital Audio/Video
You got it figured out. Hooks up exactly like you said. HDMI and DVI will result in same picture quality, but as you mentioned, HDMI doesn't carry audio. They are the same, for all intents and purposes, in all other regards.
The DVI cable should have thumbscrews on each end, to help secure it at each end. The Adapter I linked has 'receptors' for the thumb screws, so the connection will be secure. The monitor should have the same 'receptors' for thumb screws. The weakest point of the connection, physically, will be the Micro-HDMI, so just be careful to not put pressure on that connection.

  • How can I connect iMac (2008) to Cintiq Companion?

I have iMac since 2008 and this year I was given Cintiq Companion II. Actually I already had the problem with connection with another Cintiq (had to return it in the end) - they have cables that  simply don't fit iMac and I have no idea what adaptor (if any) can help! Heeelp! Please!

No it is not a problem at all.  It's just that you never mentioned in your original post that you even contacted the manufacturer.  Have you tried "calling" them?  Did the hardware come w/a user manual?  If not, have you searched the net for one?  Do they have their own forums?
You are using 3rd party hardware.  You need to determine from the manufacturer if it's compatible w/Macs and/or your OS.

  • How can I connect my iMac to a TV for playback of videos? My TV does not have HDMI.

How can I connect my iMac to a TV for playback of videos? My TV does not have HDMI.

You need to find out what video out you have on your iMac, and what kind of video inputs there are on your TV.
It will help to know exactly what model iMac and exactly what make/model TV you have.
Depending on the exact model iMac you have, it may have miniVGA, miniDVI, miniDisplayPort or Thunderbolt output.  Your TV may have composite, S-video, component, DVI, VGA or HDMI inputs.  Once you confirm what kind of ports your iMac and TV have, then we can probably suggest the correct cable or adapter so you can connect them to each other.

  • Recently I bought a mini DVI to HDMI converter  from eBay for my iMac 21.5 Mid 2011, but only later I realised that it does not have the mini DVI port in that. How can I connect my iMac to a LG smart TV through a HDMI cable?

This is the picture of all the ports from my iMac
This is the mini DVI to HDMI converter which I bought from ebay. And I have the HDMI cable to connect it to my TV
Could anyone please suggest me a solution how I could connect my iMac to the LG smart TV? Also I need to know if this transmits the audio as well to the smart TV?
Suggestions are welcomed. I really appreciate and thank you for your time

I would suggest looking into a Thunderbolt to HDMI connector. In this case, you may be able to use the TV as an external monitor. For this option, please confirm through additional research. I have not tested it personally.
You can also use an Apple TV, which connects with HDMI. In this case, you can use Airplay Mirroring. Not all Macs support Airplay Mirroring, so you need to check first. I have a Mid-2011 27" iMac, and it supports Airplay Mirroring. I don't use it often because my TV is in another room, but I just tried it and it worked. It had to change the screen resolution to work well, so I don't know if I would want to use it as my day to day monitor. http://support.apple.com/kb/ht5404

  • How do i connect my iMac to my tv to see movies with wire

how do i connect my iMac to my tv to see movies with wire

    Hey rodskc10,
Thanks for the question! Based on the iMac model and TV you have, you’ll need to pick up a compatible cable. There are a few options that can be found on the Apple Online Store:
Mac Cables - Computer Audio & Video Adapters, Network Cables & More - Apple Store (U.S.)
    http://store.apple.com/us/mac/mac-accessories/cables#!
For example, if you have the latest iMac and an HDTV, a mini DisplayPort to HDMI cable should do the job (you’ll connect this to the Thunderbolt port, which is backwards compatible with mini DisplayPort).

How do I connect my Samsung Series 8000 plasma tv to my 27" imac (2.8 GHz Intel Core i7) to use as a display?

Here you go (no financial or other interest in this web site or company):

I believe we have the same model of iMac (late 2009) in which unfortunately Apple did not provide audio signals in the mini-DisplayPort out port.  This Kanex adapter will pick up your audio as well as the DisplayPort signal and combine them in an HDMI signal that you plug into the Samsung HDTV.

How can I connect my 3gen apple tv with HDMI to my BUSH LCD32TV022HD
This does not have an HDMI port but does have:-
    1) S-Video I/P,
    2) Video I/P,
    3) Audio Input (Left & Right)
    4) Audio In jack (for VGA and DVI source)
    5) DVI input
    6) VGA input

    Welcome to the Apple community.
The Apple TV doesn't officially support a DVI connection, however you may be able to get it to work. You will first need to check that your TV supports either 720p or 1080p as well as HDCP. If you are able to get the video working over the DVI connection, you may also require a DAC in order to connect with Apple TV's optical audio output to the TVs audio imput.
You may well wish to make sure that the DVI connection works before spending any money on a DAC..

Here are the specs for your HP Pavilion All-In-One MS235 Desktop Computer. Based on the specs, your computer doesn't appear to have a video output of any kind. A USB-to-video adapter such as the EVGA UV Plus+ UV39 will be required to connect your HDTV to your computer.
