How do I control furnace temps (ramp and soak)? What hardware do I need?

I use Labview version 8.2 and Compact Field Point. I currently have a small Lindberg/Blue furnace (120V, 6.8A, 8KW) that has a mounted Lindberg/Blue UP150 programmable controller. The temperature control is not currently connected to my PC (and that's a pain).
I would like to replace the present furnace controller with labview control through Compact Field Point. I need to create a ramp and soak program in labview. My
program must be able to:
Soak at 300C for 30 min
ramp to 650C
soak at 650C for 15 min
ramp to 700C
soak at 700C for 10 min
cool to 300C
repeat the above steps as many times as desired.
I am familar with labview but have never controlled any furnace temps. I have figured out that I will need the PID control toolkit. But I'm totally stumped about the hardware I will need. I have searched everywhere but can't find an explanation. I have Compact Field Point and the furnace. What hardware goes inbetween? Just what hardware does the PID toolkit (PID VI's) send a signal to? It seems to me the PID would read a thermocouple and then send a signal to some sort of current regulator that sends a varying current to the furnace. Am I way off? How do I set this up. Can anyone recommend a good book or web site that explains how to set up furnace control using labview?

If you can, use a solid state relay as this will be the most reliable and noise free solution to switching. Switching 8kW loads with a relay can lead to arcing of the contacts after a while (and other issues), this is bad news for computers. For an 8kW device you will need to mount the device on some form of heatsink / dissapation surface. Solid state relays normally use an opto-isolated coupling which can usually be powered in the range 3 to 24v. This is connected to the control output of your selected controller.
For control of this sort I personally I prefer a dedicated controller, I use a PC for data logging, program management and monitoring. This is for reliability more than anything else, an NI controller won't come with integrated display and controls to set the device and the foot print in the panel is considerably larger. They also take an age to boot in comparison. You should also consider that you could get an electrical engineer to fit a standard controller with suitable solid state relay etc. and that will help you meet any health and safety requirements easily and quickly! Don't forget than any modifications will need to meet local regulatory requirements such as CE and thus circuit diagrams must normally be produced etc.
If I have the choice of selecting a controller, I like the Eurotherm range of temperature controllers, they are available with varying options just like the controller mentioned in the thread. There are drivers available in this forum and the NI web site for the devices.

There is also OPC support and the diagnostic software available from Eurotherm is good.
But if a device has a specific manufacturers controller on it I might select one from the same family. Often I look around the plant / factory and see what models are in use. Using a model / type that already in use makes it easy for support in the factory and reduces support calls!

I have somehow managed to write the portion of labview that prompts the user for a name. It checks a file to see if they are a new user or not and then assigns a number if they are. The program then acquires data that is to be put into a spreadsheet. Each subject will have ten trials which will have three columns. How do I get the information into the columns and then check each time to see which column it should go into (i.e. the next empty column for that subject). I have attached what I have thus far. I wrote this a long time ago and haven't touched it for some time so everything is a blur.

To perform those operations in excel you will use ActiveX. I will attach some examples of using Excel in LabVIEW and you can use these to do exactly what you want.
These three examples show how to manipulate properties, write to excel and read from excel. Let me know if there is more I can do.

Newbie: I need to get 3 copies of Photoshop, InDesign and Illustrator, what licenses do I need?

I have three users that each wanting a copy of Photoshop, InDesign and Illustrator.
I of course want to do this in the most administratively and financially efficient way.
What licenses do I need?
I though at first it would be one cc4t for the company and then three single licences for each user (nine in total)
My reseller is just making me more confused!

It looks like the three apps they want are included in cc4t so all I need is three cc4t licences and as an (un-creative) admin there is no charge for me having a "control panel"

How can I control the space before and after text in a table

I have a series of icons with descriptions, these are lined up with icons on the top row and description text in the bottom row. Each icon and description is divided by a stapled line.
The text is of varying width, therefore the column width must also wary. However I would like to make the space before and after the text equal in all instances (See image).
If there is anyone that can tell me how to do this with tables or any other tools I would be very thankful.

The only way I can think of to maintain equla spacing between the text ov vartying lengths and the vertical lines is to put each icon/text pair in it's own frame fitted to content, make each vertical line a separate object, then select them all and distribute the spacing.

You can still share an iTunes account for purchasing and downloading content. Just create a new Apple ID for iCloud to use for Messaging. If you try to create a new Apple ID for music and content, everything on their phone is tied to the Apple ID used for purchases, and would then require the password for that Apple ID to update. The way I described is easier.

I have several apple machines like, time capsule and airport extreme from different countries around the world. In a globalized world I move every 3-4 years to a new country/region. In the wifi setup of the time capsule and the airport extreme you'll only find 5 or six countries (china, Korea, Japan, chile...) but nothing about Morocco or any european country. So when you try to set "restricted access" between 1 to 5 p.m., your regional setting is China, but you live some where in Europe, there is a time difference of several hours you have to take into consideration. That is a bad joke.
There is no way of choosing a different location or setting the time as far as I know inside the setup.
Any ideas, before I sell all my Apple stuff and buy Samsung or Fujitsu?

3 Zone Tube Furnace - what hardware do I need?

Hey folks,
Currently working on a 3 zone tube furnace that I want to automate via Labview (I currently have it set up to use a PID device). Just need to be sure I'm picking the right DAQ card (and related signal conditioners) for this project and was hoping you guys could point me towards the correct product.
So we have a 3 zone furnace, each zone powered by a thyristor (the old Eurocube 424 models), The input for these guys is 0-10v. Each zone has an associated thermocouple, type K, that would need to be monitored. The whole thing is to be driven by a PID algorithm, which I'm sure Labview can handle.
I also need a 4th input for a another type k thermocouple. Looking to keep this relatively cheap too!
Any thoughts on what I'd need?

Having a look at the DAQ product chooser page, I have come up with a short list for you.
I would think of using the PCI-6229 with a SCB-68 as this has an on-board CJC source for your thermocouples, so you will have 5 Analogue inputs, which means you can read in the analogue inputs at 250KS/s divide by 5 channels = 50KS/s per channel.
If that is fast enough for you this will be a good card as it is a 16 bit card and the minimum input range is -200..200 mV, so matched quite well for a K-type thermocouple, so you should be ok for signal range. Also this card has 4 Analogue Outputs that will run at an update rate of 833KS/s, so more than fast enough for the PID you will be doing on the card. The downside is you will need 2 cables SHC68-68 and 2 terminal blocks either 1 SCB-68 or BNC-2120 and 1 CB-68 for the 2 additional output channels. This really ups the price, however you don't want to be tempted wit a USB solution. You could get a USB-6229 card however this does not have the cold junction compensation, but more importantly, USB is not the best bus for PID control, as you do not have the speed of the PCI bus or DMA transfers for single point updates. USB devices have a large latency to actually output a value. This latency can normally be ignored if you are streaming data because you have the initial latency and then all the data follows with no latency between points.
If however you do single point update (like PID control) then you have latency for every point of data you send and receive.

The assumption that unwanted temp files and cache are causing poor performance is unjustified. OS X does not maintain unwanted cache files. They exist to increase performance and are updated or deleted as necessary. So are temporary files. Certain font cache files are moved to the Trash during Safe Boot: OS X: What is Safe Boot, Safe Mode? - Apple Support. Do not use any other utility.
If your Mac is running slowly, determine if the same symptoms occur in Safe Mode.
Back up your Mac if you have not done so already. To learn how to use Time Machine read Mac Basics: Time Machine backs up your Mac - Apple Support.

How do I control storage location for iPhoto, iDVD and iMovie

My primary drive is getting full and I note that my User file has all of the iPhoto images, iDVD projects and iMovie projects. I want to take these collections off the main drive and place them on one of my external hard drives to open up space on my primary drive (the one with the Applications, etc.) How do I control where my images and movies are filed when I use the above applications? I do not recall designating any save function to this folder or drive. How can I save these files in a location on my external drives in tthe future? If I move these images and movies from my User file, will that cause a problem for iPhoto or iMovie or iDVD in finding the files in the future as I use these applications?

They are using three different concepts - VERY UNLIKE APPLE to do like this !
• iPhoto saves in a iPhoto library and there can be more than one - using the alt-key during up-start let's You to select which one You want to use and on Main Hard Disk at Root level in Photo folder.
• iDVD - Save an iDVD Project file (sort of folder) where You want to find it.
• iMovie - saves Event's and Project's in iMovie Event's resp Project's folders AND ONE MUST NOT alter or move anything in them or location of them - Moving Event's and Project's MUST BE DONE inside the iMovie Application !
So while one can move iMovie Event's and Project's to another Mac - the needed Photos (and audio from iTunes) will be missing and very hard to get iMovie on second Mac to find and recognice.
Yours (also confused - and moving step by step into the OLD FinalCut realm - Where everything makes SENSE !)

Does the menu bar appear when you move your mouse pointer to the top of your display. If so then you could change the behavior of Lightroom via the menu Window->Screen Mode
