How do I copy my files from an external drive to my new computer

I had all my music files on my old laptop whose motherboard burned out. I removed the hard drive, and would like to copy my old music files from my old hard drive to the internal hard drive in my new computer. I think I can do this one file at a time but there are like 4000 files so that is impossible

File -> Add folder to library.
Select the topmost folder with the music

You should be able to 'migrate them' without having to do so during a reinstall, from an external drive. In some cases, you may be able to use TimeMachine software even if the drive had not been used as a backup.
The usual way, though, is to drag & drop copy from one to another (volume or folder) you created in there and have open. Or drag an item on top of the icon of a hard disk drive when it is mounted on the desktop. I'm used to working with open folders and windows, because that works best; and then see if I want to change how things look inside their destination. This helps should I later want to burn them to a DVD and have it correct. And I want to know where they are.
I had more links to some information about importing or migrating data into a Mac from an external, a week ago, but can't find them now. A few good links to pages, but I think I posted what I did find directly to answer someones question about it; and believe the info was in an Apple Support article about TimeMachine, near the lower part of the page with blue words with a disclosure triangle, so you could read more in that page. But I don't believe these two are correct in that TimeMachine (some versions) only allow wireless backup to a drive in a base station unit such as Apple sells, for this. The link I saw simply said how to work around not using the wireless stuff. Maybe it was a dated item, not in these?
See a main general portal to TimeMachine support,
    here: http://www.apple.com/support/timemachine/
Or basics that may not provide optional copy methods:
Mac Basics - Time Machine backs up your mac:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1427
Perhaps a search of Apple Support database (or even ASC discussions?) would yield ideas, and perhaps find what may work for the kind of files you want to copy, and where they can be found & used later. Are the files for specific applications? Or images, music, etc?
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • How do i move a file from one external drive to another

This is my first Mac computer and I have no idea how to move/copy a file from one external hard drive to another? It won't let me drag and drop from one Finder window to another and there is no copy/paste option on the left mouse click.

That is because it is on the Right Click, and the menu.

  • IMac is not booting - How can I copy my files to an external drive

    Hello,
my iMac (late 2009 model, OS X 10.7.4) is not booting anymore. The iMac stopps booting at the Apple logo and the spinning gear.
I tried a couple of things that I found here in the community but nothing worked.
start in safe mode => iMac shuts off after a couple of seconds
start with safe boot (Shift-Command-V) => I'll get a couple of error messages, e.g. disk0s2: I/O error.   SATA WARNING: Enable Drive PHY PM failed
reset the NVRAM/PRAM => no change
But when I try to get access on the HD with the FireWire Target Disk Mode, I can see the following folders: Applications, Library, System, Users. But the statusbar shows 0 items for each folder and it shows that the HD has 650 GB available. I have the original 1TB HD. When I try to start OS X from an external drive I can see the same folders. I tried Data Rescue 3 to scan my files, but the software stopps with an error.
My TimeMachine backup was not working, so I have no actual backup and need to find a solution to copy my files to an external drive.
Instead of Data Rescue 3, I can use TechTools Pro 6 alternatively.
Would Data Rescue 3 find files if I erase and create a new partition on the HD?
What I found out so far, it looks like a corrupted file system.
Have anyone an idea or a tip, how I can copy my files?
I would be more than happy if someone can help me.
Thank you very much for all answers in advance.

The internal drive is failing, or has failed. You may not be able to save the data.
There are several ways to back up a Mac that is unable to fully boot. You need an external hard drive to hold the backup data.
    1. Boot into Recovery (command-R at startup) or from a local Time Machine backup volume (option key at startup.) Launch Disk Utility and follow the instructions in the support article linked below, under “Instructions for backing up to an external hard disk via Disk Utility.”
How to back up and restore your files
    2. If you have access to a working Mac, and both it and the non-working Mac have FireWire or Thunderbolt ports, boot the non-working Mac in target disk mode by holding down the key combination command-T at the startup chime. Connect the two Macs with a FireWire or Thunderbolt cable. The internal drive of the machine running in target mode will mount as an external drive on the other machine. Copy the data to another drive. This technique won't work with USB, Ethernet, Wi-Fi, or Bluetooth.
How to use and troubleshoot FireWire target disk mode
    3. If the internal drive of the non-working Mac is user-replaceable, remove it and mount it in an external enclosure or drive dock. Use another Mac to copy the data.

  • How do I copy iphoto libraries from one external drive to another?

Two of three of my iPhoto's libraries could not be upgraded to Mavericks because there was not enough room on a partitioned external drive. How do I copy them to a larger external drive? ( Iphoto 11)

Drag them there. The volume they’re put onto needs to be formatted as Mac OS Extended.

  • How do I copy music files from an iPod 5thGen to a new iTunes installation?

My old WinXP computer crashed & burned (literally). I installed iTunes (11.2.2.3) on my new Win7 PC. How do I copy all my music from my 5th Gen iPod into the new iTunes? My music collection contains only MP4 files ripped from my CD collection--nothing purchased from the iTunes Store. I located a folder named Apple on one of my old flash drives which contains a subfolder named iTunes Music. That folder contains subfolders for each of my original CDs with MP4s for all the tracks. Could I use those files to restore my music to iTunes?

If is a MicroSD card you'll need a MicroSD to SD card adapter. Something like this.
Once you have one of those just insert it into the SD card slot on your Mac then open a Finder window and select all the images and press Command + c to copy then go to the folder you want to put them in and select it and press Command + v to paste to that folder.

  • How do I copy a file from a flash drive to my iMac

I am trying to import my contacts from my old PC to my new iMac.  I had all my files transfered by an Apple store tech.  My contacts went to my Address Book.  Which is fine, but I now want to import them into Office for iMac 2011 Outlook.  So I exported them out of Outlook 2007 for Windows into a file on a flash drive.  I am now trying to import them from the flash drive into Outlook on my iMac.  I can't figure out how to find the flash drive on the iMac to import the file.  HELP!!!

By default, all drives are hidden from the desktop. Pretty dumb in my opinion, but that's the default.
From the desktop, choose Finder > Preferences. Turn on the check boxes for all drive types you want to always appear on the desktop.

  • Itunes copied my files from my portable harddrive to my new computer harddrive on a new computer. I didn't want that, but didn't realize I did it.  How do I fix this so I can delete the songs from my computer harddrive and use the songs from the portable

On my new computer I installed Itunes.  I wanted Itunes to use my portable harddrive for music, but instead it copied my library to the hard drive of my computer, filling it almost full.  I didn't realize this happened until I synced my iphone to Itunes.  How do I fix this?  I want to delete the library from my hard drive of my computer, and use the library from my portable hard drive.

  • How do I copy my library from an external drive to my computer without bringing all of my music just the library?

I have 137,000 songs on an external harddrive.  I just loaded them all into Itunes on a new computer and took the time to sort through all of them and remove duplicates and correct artists ect to have it all sort well.  I narrowed it down to 20,000 songs.  Now I figured out the Itunes library with 20,000 songs is still on my harddrive and is just pulling the 20,000 from the 137,000 songs available.  How do I copy just the 20,000 in my library onto the hard drive on my computer.  I want to upload these into "Cloud" but want to keep them separate from the rest of the music?  Does anyone know how to do this?
    Thanks

Designate a new iTunes Media folder outside of the current folder structure and consolidate the 20,000 files to that location.
I don't have iCloud but I presume it counts the files in your library. If so you may not need to do anything at all, assuming you've eliminated the other entries from the library, but the method above will let you create one clean folder with your keepers.

  • Copying video files from one external drive to another

Hello! I am very new to Apple and FCP, so please forgive my ignorance. I have looked through the other topics and have not found one that addresses my question, so please forgive me if this has been addressed in the past.
I am working on a project and have all of my video clips saved to a G-Tech G-Raid 320 GB extenal hard drive. I captured much of my footage using "capture now" instead of logging individual clips for various reasons (i.e.: some tape sources did not have timecode), so if I ever have a problem, simply recapturing the footage does not appear to me to be a valid option.
With this weighing heavily on my mind, I thought it would be best to copy the poject to a second G-RAID external hard drive.
However, the G-RAID uses an 800 firewire and my G5 computer only has one such port.
What would be the best way to copy from the one external drive to the other? Will I have to copy the files to my internal hard drive first? And if so, how do I do that? Thanks!!

    Crystal,
Please reply to a specific post, not to your orignial one. This keeps the threaded discussion in order.
To see the format for a drive. Open Disk Utility. It is located in your /Applications/Utilities folder.
You should see all your connected drives on the left side of the window. Click on the icon of the drive you want information on. Select the Volume icon, not the Drive icon ( the volume icon is the one under and slightly indented to the right of the drive icon)
Look at the bottom of the window. You'll see an item FORMAT: it should say Mac OS Extended. If it says MS-DOS, you'll need to ERASE the disk. When you do that, you'll have the option of changing the format.
Do not right click and COPY. Simply drag the icon of the folder containing your media files from one disk to the other. It will copy by default.
    good luck.

  • I had to transferr my music files from one computer to another by directly copying the files from the hard drive to a new drive.  Itunes recognized the files and I was able to load in new songs.  The new songs won't sync with ipod.  Ideas?

To copy the files I had to remove the hard drive and direct copy them to an expansion drive on another machine.  ITunes recognized the copied files and operates correctly on the computer.  I was able to download additional songs to ITunes on the computer without problem.  The IPod however will not recognize the new songs, does an abreviated sync process and gives a message that the IPod cannot sync because files are being used by another application.  It is also does not want to accept the disconnect command.  Any suggestions on how to solve the sync problem?

how did you save the songs? can you play the songs? have you restarted the computer?

  • Getting files from old external drive to a new one

I have a dying Acom ac powered 80gig external drive on my eMac and a powerbook that is running out of drive space.
The Acom has one USB and two firewire outputs, one firewire is hooked up to the eMac . The Acom is all itunes music (none from the Apple Store) .
I had an ex-friend set it up so I don't know squat about using external drives . I think I'll get the LaCie Mobile firewire . From what I've read it seems the best . Any other suggestions are welcome .
Is there a good tutorial somewhere on how to do this ? I would like to transfer all the music from the Acom to the new drive and be able to use it like I did the old one AND use it with my powerbook to do the same thing .
Will there be a problem with library ? In iTunes (4.7) I have "Create file names with track number " checked but I don't have "Copy files to iTunes music folder when adding to library" I don't really know what this does but it sounded like it took up space so I haven't ever checked it .
as mentioned the eMac is iTunes 4.7 using Panther and the powerbook is iTunes 6.0.2 using Tiger .
    G4powerbook tiger- G4eMac panther   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

What you like to do can be done, but not using different main versions of iTunes.
The reason for this is, that the 'iTunes Library' file has different structures with different main versions and is not downwards compatible.
Unless you have a reason not to upgrade iTunes on the eMac, my advice would be to upgrade.
If you purcase music at the iTMS, using iTunes 6, you won't be able to play them on previous iTunes versions.
If you have MIDI files, don't upgrade to the latest iTunes 6.0.4, unless you own QuickTime Pro.
iTunes 6.0.3 and 6.0.4 are having troubles with them (iTunes: MIDI files cannot be converted in iTunes 6.0.3 and 6.0.4).
I have an G4 iMac running iTunes 6.0.4. and an G3 iMac DV running itunes 6.0.2.
My music is stored on an external drive and it is no problem at all to use it on both computers.
There are a few requirements however (more about that later)
My advice would be to take the next steps.
    • Purchase the mobile drive and transfer the music to it, using the instructions in the 'Moving your iTunes Music folder' article.
You will still have a backup on your Acom (as long as it still is running) in case something might go wrong.
    • Upgrade iTunes on the eMac
    • Copy the 'iTunes Library' file from eMac to the new mobile drive, attach the drive to the Powerbook and copy the 'iTunes library' file from mobile drive to Powerbook. Read "What are the iTunes library files?" to find the exact location of the file.
    • Run iTunes on the Powerbook. you should see the entire library as you saw it on your eMac.
A few things to consider and take int account:
Decide which computer to use to add and import music. This will make things a lot easier.
You can of course add music on both computers, but you have to swap the 'iTunes Library' over and over to keep the libraries on both computers synchronized.
Always attach the mobile drive to the computer, before running iTunes. If you fail to do so, iTunes will reset the 'iTunes Music folder location' to the default location on the internal drive on the computer. Unless you 'point' iTunes to the location on the mobile again, songs you add and import will then be stored on the internal disk.
Let know if you have further questions.

  • How do I transfer my apps from an external drive to my new iMac?

I just purchased a new iMac and am currently in the process of getting everything set up. My previous Mac was a powerbook, so there are many changes that I will be getting used to in the near future.
My primary concern at the moment is getting my apps into my new iMac iTunes library. I have all my music, apps, podcasts, etc. saved on an external drive which I plugged into my new iMac. To import the music into iTunes. I selected File > Add to Library > then selected the external drive with my iTunes folder & imported the enitre folder (which was 163.57 GB). Everything, including my music, movies, podcasts, books, & TV shows transfered over just fine with the exception of my apps. After researching the issue, I discovered the iTunes was saving all the apps on my powerbook instead of the external drive in a folder titled Mobile Applications. I then transfered the folder from my powerbook to the external drive and followed the steps above to try and import my apps into my new iMac library. But have had no luck. Each app comes up with the following message when I try to add it to the iMac library:
The app "[adult swim]" could not be added to your library because an error occured. An unknown error occurred (-50).
This is as far as I have been able to get. I am ensured that my new iMac Itunes account is authorized for that computer & have synced my iPhone once, which updated iCal, but no apps.
Any guidance you can provide would be greatly appreciated. I tried to use the Mac Migrate program but did not seem to have any luck. It took almost 12 hours to run over wifi and hung up at the very end. Also, I do not see any evidance of any files being added.
    Thanks.
    Jeff / Texas

Migration didn't work for me on the music side of things either. What did work however was transferring the entire iTunes folder over to my new computer. Everything switched then, and it was just like iTunes on my old mac. Maybe if you can find the library files in there or something and transfer them over.

  • Due to a divorce all my music is on my iTunes and iPod. I had to buy a new computer and want to transfer my Library to the new computer. How can I do this without using an external drive and use new computer just like I do the old one? Thanks.

Due to divorce, all my music is on my iTunes and iPod. I have had to buy  a new laptop and want to transfer the library to the new computer before deauthorizing the old one. I dont want to have to use an external drive every time I want to listen to my music. How can I do this and have the same basic iTunes setup as before? HELP!

You might consider itunes match for moving CDs you've copied into your itunes library if you dont have a way to use home sharing.
iTunes match is an optional service offered by apple that costs about $25 a year.  It scans your music library and if it finds music that is already in apple's itunes catalog it'll automatically "unlock"/"store" these in the cloud for you.  Items that it does not find in the catalog it'll upload and store these in the cloud for you and you can download them on your devices.  See http://www.apple.com/itunes/itunes-match/
