How do I copy my operating system to a solid state drive and make it the disc I boot from?

Where is your operating system now? Basically, you clone it from wherever it is now to the SSD:
Clone Lion/Mountain Lion using Restore Option of Disk Utility
Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Select Disk Utility from the main menu then press the Continue button.
Select the destination volume from the left side list.
Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to the Source entry field.
Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the SSD. Source means the drive now holding OS X.

  • How do I install an operating system on my erased hard drive when I get the error "This item is unavailable"?

So i erased my MacBook's hard drive trying to get a fresh, clean system install. After erasing, I tried to install a new OS X with the Recovery drive but after entering my Apple ID it simply says "This item is currently unavailable, Please try again later." So now my computer has no operating system on it, and I can't get one.

You may need to do the following. Check this to be sure you can: Computers that can be upgraded to use OS X Internet Recovery. If you are OK:
Install OS X Using Internet Recovery
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
Boot to the Internet Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND-OPTION- R keys until a globe appears on the screen. Wait patiently - 15-20 minutes - until the Recovery main menu appears.
Partition and Format the hard drive:
Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
After DU loads select your newly installed hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed. Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall OS X: Select Reinstall OS X and click on the Install button. Be sure to select the correct drive to use if you have more than one.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
This should restore the version of OS X originally pre-installed on the computer.
If the above does not work, then you have to first install Snow Leopard:
    Clean Install of Snow Leopard
         1. Boot the computer using the Snow Leopard Installer Disc or the Disc 1 that came
with your computer.  Insert the disc into the optical drive and restart the computer.
After the chime press and hold down the  "C" key.  Release the key when you see
a small spinning gear appear below the dark gray Apple logo.
         2. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue
button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
After DU loads select the hard drive entry from the left side list (mfgr.'s ID and drive
size.)  Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.  Set the number of
partitions to one (1) from the Partitions drop down menu, click on Options button
and select GUID, click on OK, then set the format type to MacOS Extended
(Journaled, if supported), then click on the Apply button.
         3. When the formatting has completed quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed
with the OS X installation and follow the directions included with the installer.
         4. When the installation has completed your computer will Restart into the Setup
Assistant. After you finish Setup Assistant will complete the installation after which
you will be running a fresh install of OS X.  You can now begin the update process
by opening Software Update and installing all recommended updates to bring your
             installation current.
Download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1.
You can now upgrade from the App Store, but right now Apple's servers are not working for Snow Leopard users, so be patient and keep trying to download Yosemite.

i have deleted my private folder and do not have enough space to reinstall my operating system. How can i transfer files from my hard drive to an USB drive to free up space when the operating system isn't working. or do i need to erase disk through disk utilities without erasing data (but will it delete my programs such as photoshop, office, creative suite?

Connect the computer to another Mac and put it in FireWire Target Disk mode, or use the Disk Utility to clone the drive or image specific folders with the USB drive as the target. After you've copied off everything you want, you'll likely need to erase the drive and reinstall the applications.

You can't. Nothing that runs under v10.1.1 can run 10.5.8.
No MacBook Pro can run under v10.1.1.
So something in your post is wrong.

    1. Choose About this Mac from the Apple menu to check the installed version.
    2. Incremental updates are available in the Software Update pane of System Preferences or the Mac App Store's Updates tab. The source for full version upgrades varies; 10.6 through 10.8 are in the online Apple Store, and 10.9 is in the Mac App Store.

during a update of apple my iphone 3GS crashed an now the operating system wont load up..ive tried to reset the phone to the factory settings using itunes it took 4 hours and completed but my phone still wont come on..what can i do to fix the problem? please help #

In trying to include what information all that I could I should have specified I DON'T KNOW THAT IT WAS DEFINATELY JAILBROKEN when I took it to the apple store they told me there's no way for them to tell if it was jail broken or not. I'm only going by what ppl have told me COULD HAVE BEEN DONE TO THE PHONE. With that said the only thing I know for sure is that the apple tech at the Genius Bar told me that someone took control of my root menu in February & I've had no control of my phone since. I asked him how to regain control & how he knew his exact words were "oh that is out of our scope of capabilities here at this level & you would need an apple engineer to fix it". I said ok then how do I get an apple eng then? He laughed & said you can't!!!! To which I was furious I came home & called apple requesting to speak w/the fraud dept to file a report they said we don't have a fraud dept!! So after a 45 mn phone call again I left w/no answers.
    @TJBUSMC1973-
I DON'T HAVE THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS TO SPEND HIRING AN ATTORNEY & Although I appreciate your suggestion I fail to how an attorney would be able to facilitate in any way since there's no suspect. I cannot prove that it's him doing it so I certainly can't pursue legal action w/no proof & no money. :'((
Again I thank you for your advice but I don't think that will help.
I was looking more for a TECHNICAL way to avoid this happening w/a new phone should I buy one or trying to get them out of my phone now! Such as installing some kind of software protection?? Someway to clear out the entire phone (other than factory reset which was done 10 x's w/no success, etc. if this person got in then there HAS TO BE A WAY OF GETTING HIM OUT, right????

  • Is there any version of any operating system (Snow Leopard through Maverick) that will make my 2010 Macbook 7,1 run some-what efficiently again? Instead of just installing Maverick, should I consider re-installing any of the previous op systems?

My 13-inch, Mid-2010 Macbook has declined in performance with every operating system upgrade. Maverick functioned, unlike Yosemite, which I currently have every intention of deleting. Honestly, the last time my mac could run multiple applications at once without slowing to a crawl and then crashing was on Snow Leopard, Lion, or Mountain Lion. Although I'm not quite sure at what point my Mac ran smoothest, but remained compatible with the new applications I've downloaded over the years. I know that it's been too long since I enjoyed using my 2010 Macbook. In fact, I thoroughly enjoy using my 2008 Macbook more, despite it's limited compatibility and obsolete features.
I own a Snow Leopard install disk, or could install any of the operating system on my desktop and reinstall using a USB method, or any other means to successfully wipe a disk clean of Yosemite that many of you might know that works similarly (I didn't have Time Machine on). With that being the case, what is my best option for deleting Yosemite, and recovering an older OS X operating system successfully?
The question I have for all of you with knowledge superior to my mediocre Mac mind, is what operating system can I reinstall on this Mac that will give it the best shot to function acceptably? Is any specific version compatible with all/most new software and such, but before Maverick and Yosemite raised my active memory usage through the run, along with constant lagging, and then a kernel panic. Through extensive googling, I've become more confused and frustrated. I could not get a concrete answer due to the questions phrasing, but hopefully someone can assist me here ASAP, please. How can I run Google Chrome and have a Celtx document open again without unavoidable crashing? I won't be greedy and dare ask for an additional, minimally energy draining application run in the background. Again, my 2008 runs beautifully, but is limited in compatibility. My newer 2010 Mac runs like it's struggling for memory (I've used 30 gb out of the 200, using my out-dated Macbook for most of my Mac tasks.
My minor question.... For deleting Yosemite, what method is the most effective and easy considering the options? My major question..... Will reinstalling an operating system on a fresh disk, is any operating system valuable enough to consider installing and avoiding re-updating to Maverick? Or is Maverick my best shot? And a Mac that is significantly newer and more compatible with current hardware and software, and has approx 100 gb less on it's drive than my 2008 Mac, yet the Yosemite Mac can't handle of a fraction of the 2008 Snow Leopard activity. This is my 5th physical Macbook in less than a decade, btw. Along with pads and phones. I refuse to give Apple more money to solve this, so that is not the answer I'm looking for. Thank you.

FIRSTLY, THANK YOU! I appreciate any help you can lend me here. Below is a Etrecheck from today.
Essentially, Google Chrome and ANY other program open will eventually freeze up. I deleted Chrome. Re-downloaded. Completely deleted. Used Safari. Absolutely NO BETTER.
If I'm writing a really long document in a word processor and using a thesaurus or dictionary application in the background.... That will eventually freeze my mac.
So ANY assistance here would be terrific because since Yosemite it's been impossible to tolerate.
    Problem description:
If 2 “major” programs are running at the same time, my Macbook is almost unusable due to lag, crashes, and freezes.

  • New HD- how do I copy orig HD and make it the master?

    Hi everyone,
I just installed an internal 160GB Seagate drive into my computer which is running 10.2.8, on 12GB original hard drive.
I just placed it in there and plugged it in. Machine was shakey on startup, but it finally showed me the desktop, but no icon for the new disk on there. but luckly, It showed up in system profiler (it says I have 120GB, I know I need a ata thing, but that's fine for now)!
I got into disk utility and partitioned it into 2 parts for (graphics mainly) applications and hard drive info- 60GB. I'll use the other half for storage. Both partitions now appear on my desktop-whew.
how should I go about making the new drive- disk utilities says it's the slave- into the master? (12GB original HD vs. 60GB partition)
Should I just drag and drop files to the new partition? I DL'd that "super duper!" program, should I use that?
and after I do that, should I switch the jumpers on both hard drives to make 120GB the master?
Does it have to be the master to be the startup disk?
why does it have to be the master?
thank you. I love this forum, and I tell everyone about it.

    Hi,
    You need Carbon Copy Cloner.
Here is a post that I made for another user.(who had a laptop)
In X you cannot drag and drop the system like you could in preX systems.
You have to use a program like Carbon Copy Clone or Super Duper or the restore function in Disk Utility. Each has its benefits and liabilities.
My favorite is Carbon Copy Clone. Here is a post I made to another thread on this topic.
A clone is just what it says. It is an exact copy of the parent.
Unlike the mac os's prior to X, you cannot just drag and drop your system or many of it's folders to another hard drive/partition to copy them. There are invisible files and links between files that have to be maintained. No problem, you just use a program for cloning. I have used Carbon Copy Clone for years and for making a simple clone it is easy and works well.
To start with, you need another hard drive. You will need an external firewire drive to make it bootable (a combo firewire/usb is fine but just usb won't work on our macs. The newer Intel macs are usb bootable but ours just work on firewire). Once you have the external drive plug it in, turn it on and format it using Disk Utility to hfs+ journaled. If you want to split the drive in 2 or more parts you can do it now. Keep in mind that you need at least as much space on the clone as the parent takes. To split the drive later would require erasing it's contents so decide if you want to have more than one copy of your system (one for testing the other for backup or what ever). This is all done with Disk Utility.
Now that you have the destination for cloning download CCC
    http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/13260
(This site is also a great one for downloading share ware, updates, etc. so book mark VersionTracker.com).
First open your preferences and select Energy Saver. Set it to a couple of hours or just turn it off. You don't want to sleep during the clone process. You might also want to plug your laptop into the power supply.
Once downloaded, drag CCC to the Applications folder, start it and you will get the panel for cloning. Click the preferences and select "repair permissions before cloning and make bootable".
Close the preferences and on the main panel your source is your current hard drive. The destination is the external drive (or one of it's partitions if you decide to split the hd). Click the lock at the bottom to bring up the authentication window, enter your name, click the clone button and go watch tv or something.
When it is finished you will get a window telling you so. Don't do web surfing or Photoshop work while cloning. If you can't remember what programs are running before cloning then just restart your mac and go directly to CCC or whatever program you decide to use (some like SuperDuper also available on VersionTracker.com. Just enter "clone" in the search window).
When it is all done try booting from your clone. You hold the option key down at boot and with the firewire drive on you should get a screen with both the laptop's hard drive and your external drive as valid start drives. Select the external and it should boot. If it does not go back to your main drive, open preferences and select Startup Disk. Your clone should appear there. Select it and restart. If it still does not work then your clone is bad but in 3 years of cloning I think that this happened one time.
If you ever mess up the main laptop drive or it dies you can start your laptop off the clone, start CCC, erase the laptops messed up/or new drive and clone your backup to the laptop. Now a catastrophic failure of the system or the hard drive won't cost you any lost info and time.
I keep several clones on several drives for backup. Every few months I use dvd's to back up critical customer files but in the interim it is clones of the main drive. When major updates to the system come along and I'm going to install them it is never without making sure that I have an up to date clone to fall back on. Years ago I had a drive fail that I thought was backed up on cd's. It was an expensive lesson in backing up. Since then I have had half a dozen hard drives fail so my paranoia with multiple clones. Cloning is the easiest way to make sure everything is backed up.

I have been trying to install window 7 operating system through booth camp assistant, i will finish all the stages for window to complete installation it will hook. the installation cannot be able to complete and i really install windows on it, please i need an assistance on how to go about it.

Right now I have 6 different systems installed. Windows XP, 7, and 8 plus Linux Mint, Commodore, and OS X Snow Leopard (for old times sake), all running on Mountain Lion.
I recommend reading the user manual as it greatly helps getting through the steps, however an intuitive person should pick it up fairly easily.
Thanks to BobTheFisherman for the link.
There are other ways to get Windows on a Mac but I'm a big fan of open-source software.
Give it a try. You might like it or it may not be your cup of tea.
