Yes, as long as the backup drive is large enough.

how do you remove back up data from the memory storage? my storage data states that i have over 80gb of data used for back ups and i dont know why as i use a external hard drive as a time machine .now my 250gb flash storage is nearly full.. HELP!

When Time Machine backs up a portable Mac, some of the free space will be used to make local snapshots, which are backup copies of recently deleted files. The space occupied by local snapshots is reported as available by the Finder, and should be considered as such. In the Storage display of System Information, local snapshots are shown as  Backups. The snapshots are automatically deleted when they expire or when free space falls below a certain level. You ordinarily don't need to, and should not, delete local snapshots yourself. If you followed bad advice to disable local snapshots by running a shell command, you may have ended up with a lot of data in the Other category. Ask for instructions in that case.

  • I want to backup my photos to a WD My Passport, and also have a PC in the house. Is it okay to format the external hard drive to FAT 32?

Want to back up/save my photos to an external hard drive both for safety and for portability. I use an iMac, but everyone else in the family uses PC, so ideally I'd like to be able to use the drive on both systems. I have been looking online and it looks like FAT32 may be the answer. As I'm sure you can tell I am new to all this and just wanted to check that formatting the My Passport to this format will be agreeable to the Apple operating system. I have an iMac, iPad 3 and iPhone 5, if this makes any difference.
    Any advice would be appreciated.
    Alex

I would use a FAT 32 filesystem only for files you will be sharing with Windows.  It is an old, feature-poor filesystem.  Of course that excludes any application files that are not Windows compatible (including Time Machine...).  You should not think of it as a backup drive.
I would backup all the files on your internal drive onto a separate drive using Time Machine or Carbon Copy Cloner.  It is easier an safer to backup everthing. Also, maintining more than one backup is prudent so have at least two backup disks.  See this thread for more extensive backup advice.

Disks are inexpensive. Losing your data is not.

    Hi Perilman,
Welcome to the Apple Support Communities! I understand that all of your iTunes media is on an external hard drive and you would like to move that media onto your new Windows computer hard drive. The following article has step by step instructions for this specifically. Part 5 in the External drive section is probably what is going to be most relevant to you.

  • Can you use VMware Fusion to run a windows 7 VM on an external hard drive

I have the latest version of Mountain Lion running on a MacBook Air 11' with 4GB or Ram and an SSD of 128GB.  I have purchased the latest version of VMWare's Fusion Product.
Since it takes up so much room to run on the SSD drive, I was wondering if it was possible to install a Windows 7 instance (I have the ultimate version with ISO already sitting on the Msc and External Drive) and access it from the Mac to run my windows programs.
    So in short:
MacBook 11"  Latest Version of Mountain Lion  Latest version of Fusion
Want to run Windows 7 VM on an external hard drive rather than installing it on my internal drive.
Can this be done?  If so, how?
Thank you so much for reading this and hopefully someone can help.
    mkkoenig

My external drive is FAT 32 and my MacBook recognizes it, however Fusion does not.  So if I buy a brand new external hard drive, format from scratch FAT 32, use Fusion to create that VM, I should be able to install Win 7 on the external drive and use it via Fusion?
Sorry if I am dense, just trying to make sure I understand. :-)

  • I have a unexpected error code -50. I can't make any more changes to a newly MacOS (journaled) formatted Calvary External hard drive.

I added files already, now I can't even make a new folder. I had time machine backing it up, then I excluded the hard drive. I do have Media encoder that's reading files from it currently, but that shouldn't be the issue. So confused. This error code is nowhere on the internet...

Your post is a little confusing, please describe when you see the error. If it's while you are running Time Machine then please look over Pondini's Time Machine Troubleshooting & Time Machine FAQs.

  • How to completely delete all backed-up time machine files but not other files in my external hard drive?

I use a 500G WD as my external.. I have documents and movies there that i do not want to delete. Simply i just want to delete my time machine files completely and for my mac to not recognised it as a time machine HD.. TY guys  p.s. A video would be nice

If you have the external HD setup as one partition, you cannot delete only the TM files as a unit.  You will have to use the brute force method of deleting directory by directory.
If you have the drive partitioned into a TM backup partition and another partition for your other work, you can simply reformat the TM backup partition.
So, the first question is, how is your drive setup, as one or as two partitions?

  • How can I backup my IPod Classic to a CD/DVD or MP3 or external hard drive or PC?

I have lots on my IPod from various places, including songs I converted from vynal records and from cassettes.  I don't have anywhere else but my Ipod.  If my Ipod goes, I lose these memories and important items forever.  Can someone help.  Is a backup even something that can be done?
    Thank you

On the iPod, create an On-The-Go Playlist.
Navigate to the first Playlist you want to use; press-and-hold the Select (centre) button until the Playlist name flashes. This puts that playlist into the On-The-Go Playlist, which is located at the bottom of the Playlist menu.
Now navigate to the second Playlist you want; press-and-hold the Select button until the Playlist name flashes. This has added the second Playlist to the On-The-Go Playlist.
Repeat for each Playlist you want to add.
Once you have added all the Playlists you want, scroll down to the end of the Playlist to On-The-Go list. If you go into the On-The-Go list, you will see all the songs form your other Playlists, in Playlist order. Simply scroll to the first song and press the Select or Play to start the first song playing.
By the way, there was no missing manual. No manual was supplied.
If you cannot find the answer by:
    trial and error
    by looking at the online manual;

  • Backing up iTunes on external hard drive

I'm getting a new computer. How can I back up my all of my musice on iTunes onto my external hard drive so I can move it all onto my new computer? Every time I try to do this iTunes tells me to put it on a CD.

Instead of using ITunes - which doesn't seem to be designed for people with laptops... - use your own machine's back up, or copy function.
Basically copy the Itunes music folder onto the external.
Then do the same copy to put the folder on your new computer. Then tell Itunes where the music is and use the import folder to make it draw the music into the library.
Manual, boring, but better than anything Apple have designed for this fairly common scenario...

  • Copying saved iphoto library from external hard drive back to Macbook Pro

Please help, I have accidentally managed to permanently delete my iphoto library and by this I mean that I somehow dragged my library into trash and then emptied it.  I don't know how this happend but I quite quickly found out I had done it and shut my computer down.  I have since done a recovery with disk drill and have hopefully recovered most of my photos though I havent had time to look through all the 1000's of photos yet.  I do have a copied version of my library on an external hard drive that I did in 2012 and I have tried to copy this library back to my pictures folder so i at least have my photos up to 2012 back but it is not working.  I have read through some of the threads on here regarding iphoto library back ups and I think the issue might be that the external hard drive is formatted Fat32 and not os extended.
I am hoping someone can help me get this working.  Here are the facts.
    1.  I am running iphoto 11, version 9.2.3 on a macbook pro running os x 10.6.8
    2. The copied iphoto library is on an external hard drive that is fat32 formatted.  I can open the package contents and see the originals folder with all the yearly folders inside and all the numbered folders inside that with the pictures in them, so I know the pictures are there.
    3.  If I try to copy the library folder over to the pictures folder on the macbook i just get a pop up window saying 'preparing to copy iphoto library' and the scrolling bar but the copy doesn't actually start.
    4.  If I try to open the library through iphoto by holidng down the option key, iphoto tells me that the library has to be upgraded but i am reluctant to upgrade the original copy of the library.  I would prefer to copy it first in case anything goes wrong but then i have the problem above that the copy doesn't work
Thank you in advance for any help.

The copied iphoto library is on an external hard drive that is fat32 formatted.
Therein lies the problem.  iPhoto libraries need to be stored, placed on a disk formatted OS X Extended (journaled).  The FAT format doesn't support the complexity of an iPhoto library and can, and more often than not, corrupt a library.
    Try the following:
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 - download the free version of iPhoto Library Manager and launch.>Click on the Add Library button,
2 -  select the library you want to add from those in the selection window.
3 - make sure that in the rebuild window the checkbox  "Scavange orphaned photos" is checked.
4 - now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the Library ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
5 - in the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed, i.e. in the Pictures folder of your MBP. Click on the Create button.
Note 1: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments. However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost.
Note 2:  Your current library will be left untouched for further attempts at a fix if so desired.

  • Best External Hard Drive for Carbon Copy Cloner?

I'm about to do a clean install of Leopard on my *Mac Pro* but I want to back up/clone my current system (10.4.11) to an *external hard drive* first. Based on the recommendations of similar users (Logic Studio) -- a clean install is preferable to an upgrade from Tiger to Leopard. I plan to use *Carbon Copy Cloner* to clone my current system but am unclear as to whether I can use an *external USB drive* versus an external Firewire drive.
Some people claim that firewire is much faster and more reliable for transferring/backing up data, and more importantly, that it's the only type of external hard drive one can boot from -- but I'm not sure that's true for these Intel-based Macs.
Also, I currently use an *Apogee Ensemble* audio interface which does not like sharing the firewire bus with other peripherals. I've also heard references to a external hard drive chipset called 911+ as being important but I think this may only be in regard to firewire.
Bottom line, _can I use an external USB drive with Carbon Copy Cloner on an Intel-based Mac?_
I'm looking for something around 500 Gigs that can sit on my desk with a minimal footprint. I'd like to partition it into three volumes -- the first for the Tiger clone; the second for weekly Leopard back-up; and the third for sound library storage. I'll likely need to access the third volume in realtime from *Logic Pro 8* (audio application) so the HD should be pretty fast. Recommendations?

    So Kappy & Hatter...
Allow me to spell this out in practical terms. I'm installing Logic Pro, an audio production application. The consensus is that best results are achieved by installing the application on the internal system drive in bay #1 on the Mac Pro.
Most professional users of Logic Pro recommend a second internal drive in bay #2 solely for audio recording even though the app runs on the drive in bay #1. The drive in bay #2 is often a Raptor because of the 10,000 rpm spin rate, beneficial for the recording process.
For sound libraries with large audio samples/loops, often streamed to the app -- a third drive is recommended to store the sound library. It can be internal or external. Many people use external drives for this function on a firewire 800 bus. The emphasis for this drive would be to read quickly and stream the samples quickly. I would assume that a 32MB buffer cache versus 16MB would be beneficial. I was looking for hi-speed if I went the external route -- hence my foray into the realm of eSATA buses, but perhaps I should just get an internal drive for this as I do have drive bays available in the Mac Pro.
Can you recommend drive spex for this task or a particular hard drive for this task of storing and streaming the sound library?

  • Back up photos and video directly to external hard drive?

I need to back up my photos and video from my iPhone 3GS to my external hard drive, not iPhoto on my Mac because I don't have much space left on my computer. I really can't back up to my computer and then transfer it all to the hard drive. Is there a way to do this? If so, could you please be specific with directions and settings? Greatly appreciated!

    No.
Photos and videos in your iPhone's camera roll must be imported by an application on your computer as with any other digital camera.
If your computer's hard drive is that low on available storage capacity, you need to move other data to an external hard drive.
You can store your iTunes library and your iPhoto library on an external drive along with any data that you don't access very often. You computer's hats drive should have about 10% free.
Or invest in a new internal drive with much greater storage capacity.
