How do I create a JMF streaming server with QuickTime Web Client?

Can anyone give me some pointers on how to create a JMF streaming server and user can type in a rtsp URL on the web browser and be able to view the streaming video in QuickTime player?
thanks

JMF does not have RTSP server capabilities built-in. You would have to program the RTSP request-response protocol yourself.

  • How do I create an app to interact with my Web ? like skype or msn ?

I need to create a downloadable interface like Skype or Msn which will interact with my website that is created on PHP and MySQL...
What will be the best practices for this ? thanks in advance...

You might take a look at Adobe's AIR platform which can use HTML, JavaScript, and Flash to develop applications that work on the desktop like a regular app but can also connect/interact with a web service. But that question is more in line with the Dreamweaver Application Development forum.

  • How can I create a 2nd fresh website with I-web?

Very strange. I Created and published (via FTP) a 3 page website with I-web, no problems. Now I want to create some individual one-off pages to upload to a separate website/domain to update it, but only seem to be able to open the one original website in I-web. Maddening - can anyone help? Thanks

try moving the domain file to a new place (desktop) and then opening up iweb. that way it will start a new file for you and you won't have all your sites within the one domain file.

  • How do I create an interactive PDF file with variable data

We would like to basically do a 'mail merge' of our list of customers with an interactive PDF file (including videos, menus, etc - not just form fill out and web links) to create a single PDF file that contains multiple mail pieces ... one for each customer ... with each mail piece being customized for that customer.  Customizations would include different greetings (Dear Bob, Dear Dana, etc), as well as different charts based on data unique to the customer, different photographs, etc.
I've seen that InDesign and Acrobat Professional can be used to create an interactive PDF (such as from http://tv.adobe.com/watch/ask-the-adobe-ones/14-calling-rufus-about-interactive-pdf-making).  However I don't understand how I can insert data from a database, csv file, excel file etc into the PDF file so that each page, or each set of pages, within the PDF can be customized.
Can anyone point me to a tool to use for this?
    Thanks,
    Bob Kendall

  • How do I create an after effects file with an interchangeable image

    Hey,
hope someone can help me, I'm using after effects to create a mp4 file, it contains a photo which has a animation super imposed ontop of it.
When the projects finished the base photo that the animation is created around could change up three times a day.
What I'm trying to work out is a way for a non technical user to just be able to upload the new photo to somewhere and for the animation to be created and returned somehow to him so that the animator doesn't have to re open and edit the affect effect project each time a new photo comes in.
Is there a way to do this built into after effects does any one know?
    Thanks for any help

  • I don't know much about computers can anyone walk me through this ? How Do I Change The Software Update Server Address On A Client  ? what do I open and how do i put it in the right spot?

I don't know much about computers can anyone walk me through this ? How Do I Change The Software Update Server Address On A Client  ? what do I open and how do i put it in the right spot?

The simplest method is to run a defaults command on the client Macs (easily pushed via Apple Remote Desktop):
    defaults write com.apple.SoftwareUpdate CatalogURL 'HTTP_URL_FOR_CATALOG'
for a user. If you run it via sudo it will set it for whenever you use softwareupdate as root.
The HTTP_URL_FOR_CATALOG has been changed with Mac OS X 10.6.  If you use MCX it will automatically pick the new catalog – however if  doing it manually the following URLs need to be used for whichever  client version is in question:
    Mac OS X 10.4: http://mysus.example.com:8088/index.sucatalog
    Mac OS X 10.5: http://mysus.example.com:8088/index-leopard.merged-1.sucatalog.sucatalog
    Mac OS X 10.6: http://mysus.example.com:8088/index-leopard-snowleopard.merged-1.sucatalog
    Mac OS X 10.7: http://mysus.example.com:8088/index-lion-snowleopard-leopard.merged-1.sucatalog
    Mac OS X 10.8: index-mountainlion-lion-snowleopard-leopard.merged-1.sucatalog
To double check this applied you can run the following command:
    /usr/libexec/PlistBuddy -c Print /Library/Preferences/com.apple.SoftwareUpdate.plist
    and /usr/libexec/PlistBuddy -c Print ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.SoftwareUpdate.plist
to see what settings are for the computer and user appropriately.
If  this is working correctly when running Software Update (GUI) you should  see the server address appear in parenthesis in the title of the  window.
    MCX
Another alternative is to use Workgroup  Manager to manage the preferences via MCX from your server. This can be  done for users, or for computers if they are bound to your Open Directory.
If you are using 10.5 Server or newer: you can simply use the Software Update section under Preferences.
    Manually:
Choose the accounts, computers, or groups to have the preference applied to.
Click on Preferences, and then the Details tab
Press the Add… button and navigate to /Library/Preferences/com.apple.SoftwareUpdate.plist
    Press Edit…
Under Often, add a New Key and enter the name CatalogURL
Make sure the type is string and then enter your SUS URL (eg. http://mysus.example.com:8088/index.sucatalog or if using 10.6: http://mysus.examle.com:8088/ – see above from the defaults section)
Press  Apply Now, then Done. Once users/computers have refreshed their MCX  settings (usually the next login or restart) the new settings will take  over.
If this is working correctly when running Software  Update (GUI) you should see the server address appear in parenthesis in  the title of the window.
In order to have a system-wide configuration one has to run the following:
sudo defaults write /Library/Preferences/com.apple.SoftwareUpdate CatalogURL "http://your.updates-server.lan:8088/index.sucatalog"
In order to correctly work both on Leopard and Snow Leopard the right command to issue is:
    defaults write /Library/Preferences/com.apple.SoftwareUpdate CatalogURL "http://your.updates-server.lan:8088/index-leopard-snowleopard.merged-1.sucatalog"
Happily used and tested on my network
The DNS trick that Chealion points out is fantastic. I use it at our office, and every computer on our LAN  will automatically pull the updates from the local repository at high  speed without any configuration.
Create the swscan.apple.com DNS zone on your internal DNS server, and have it resolve via an A record to your Mac

The Apple ID for the iTunes stores and for the Mac App Store are the same account. You can only buy from the stores in the countries in which you have the qualifications. You must have a bank card in that country and the bank card must have a valid billing address in that country. Creating more than one Apple ID is a bad idea and will not help you get around the requirements.

  • How can I create a new TC backup with ethernet, so I don't have to wait two days for a new wireless backup?

How can I create a new TC backup with ethernet, so I don't have to wait two days for a new wireless backup?
Several times in the last year, I've gotten a message that Time Machine needs to completely redo my backup. Using the wireless connection, this takes almost two days. Is there a way to do the backup with ethernet and then switch back to wireless? Thanks.

May I know what is needed to make sure the MacBook is able to see Time Capsule on ethernet?
Connect an Ethernet cable from one of the LAN <-> ports on the 2Wire gateway to the WAN port (circle of dots icon) on the Time Capsule.
If AirPort Utility cannot "see" the Time Capsule now, you will need to perform a "hard reset" by holding in the reset button for 7-8 seconds or so and then reconfigure the Time Capsule. You can use the same Time Capsule name and password, etc. as before.
Configure the Time Capsule to "Create a wireless network" and select the Bridge Mode option when it appears during the setup using AirPort Utility.
Once the Time Capsule is configured, restart the entire network again. Power down everything, start the 2Wire first and then start each other device after that one at a time about a minute apart.
Now you can connect your Mac directly to one of the LAN <-> ports on the Time Capsule for the backup using another Ethernet cable. In general, about 20-25 GB per hour will transfer.
The Time Capsule will broadcast a much faster wireless network than the 2Wire can provide, so you might want to leave the setup "as is" for awhile after the first backup is complete. If you decide to use the Time Capsule as your main wireless access point, you would want to turn the wireless off on the 2Wire since two wireless networks in close proximity can create interference problems.
Or, if you want to use the wireless on the 2Wire, you could turn off the wireless on the Time Capsule. Then backups will occur over the 2Wire wireless, or over Ethernet.
I don't really recommend the "Join a wireless network" setting on the Time Capsule for most users, but you could go back to that setup as well if you want after the first backup is complete.

    what I want scenario#2
    Machine#3 client (using URLConnection("https://...") ---> Machine#1 (Proxy for https)----> Machine#2 (Server https port)
    In scenario#1

  • How To Install A (Almost) Working Lion Server With Profile Management/SSL/OD/Mail/iCal/Address Book/VNC/Web/etc.

I recently installed a fresh version of Lion Server after attempting to fix a broken upgrade. With some help from others, I've managed to get all the new features working and have kept notes, having found that many or most of the necessary installation steps for both the OS and its services are almost entirely undocumented. When you get them working, they work great, but the entire process is very fragile, with simple setup steps causing breaks or even malicious behaviors. In case this is useful to others, here are my notes.
Start with an erased, virgin, single guid partitioned drive. Not an upgrade. Not simply a repartitioned drive. Erased. Clean. Anything else can and probably will break the Lion Server install, as I discovered myself more than once. Before erasing my drive, I already had Lion and made a Lion install DVD from instructions widely available on the web. I suppose you could also boot into the Lion recovery partition and use disk utility to erase the OS X partition then install a new partition, but I cut a DVD. The bottom line is to erase any old OS partitions. And of course to have multiple, independent backups: I use both Time Machine with a modified StdExclusions.plist and Carbon Copy Cloner.
Also, if you will be running your own personal cloud, you will want to know your domain name ahead of time, as this will be propagated everywhere throughout server, and changing anything related to SSL on Lion Server is a nightmare that I haven't figured out. If you don't yet have a domain name, go drop ten dollars at namecheap.com or wherever and reserve one before you start. Soemday someone will document how to change this stuff without breaking Lion Server, but we're not there yet. I'll assume the top-level domain name "domain.com" here.
Given good backups, a Lion Install DVD (or Recovery Partition), and a domain name, here are the steps, apparently all of which must be more-or-less strictly followed in this order.
    DVD>Disk Utility>Erase Disk  [or Recovery Partition>Disk Utility>Erase Partition]
    DVD>Install Lion
Reboot, hopefully Lion install kicks in
Update, update, update Lion (NOT Lion Server yet) until no more updates
System Preferences>Network>Static IP on the LAN (say 10.0.1.2) and Computer name ("server" is a good standbye)
Terminal>$ sudo scutil --set HostName server.domain.com
App Store>Install Lion Server and run through the Setup
Download install Server Admin Tools, then update, update, update until no more updates
Server Admin>DNS>Zones [IF THIS WASN'T AUTOMAGICALLY CREATED (mine wasn't): Add zone domain.com with Nameserver "server.domain.com." (that's a FQDN terminated with a period) and a Mail Exchanger (MX record) "server.domain.com." with priority 10. Add Record>Add Machine (A record) server.domain.com pointing to the server's static IP. You can add fancier DNS aliases and a simpler MX record below after you get through the crucial steps.]
System Prefs>Network>Advanced>Set your DNS server to 127.0.0.1
A few DNS set-up steps and these most important steps:
    A. Check that the Unix command "hostname" returns the correct hostname and you can see this hostname in Server.app>Hardware>Network
    B. Check that DNS works: the unix commands "host server.domain.com" and "host 10.0.1.2" (assuming that that's your static IP) should point to each other. Do not proceed until DNS works.
    C. Get Apple Push Notification Services CA via Server.app>Hardware>Settings><Click toggle, Edit... get a new cert ...>
    D. Server.app>Profile Manager>Configure... [Magic script should create OD Master, signed SSL cert]
    E. Server.app>Hardware>Settings>SSL Certificate> [Check to make sure it's set to the one just created]
    F. Using Server.app, turn on the web, then Server.app>Profile Manager> [Click on hyperlink to get to web page, e.g. server.domain.com/profilemanager] Upper RHS pull-down, install Trust Profile
    G. Keychain Access>System>Certificates [Find the automatically generated cert "Domain", the one that is a "Root certificate authority", Highlight and Export as .cer, email to all iOS devices, and click on the authority on the device. It should be entered as a trusted CA on all iOS devices. While you're at it, highlight and Export... as a .cer the certificate "IntermediateCA_SERVER.DOMAIN.COM_1", which is listed an an "Intermediate CA" -- you will use this to establish secure SSL connections with remote browsers hitting your server.]
    H. iOS on LAN: browse to server.domain.com/mydevices> [click on LHS Install trust cert, then RHS Enroll device.
    I. Test from web browser server.domain.com/mydevices: Lock Device to test
    J. ??? Profit
    12. Server Admin>DNS>Zones> Add convenient DNS alias records if necessary, e.g., mail.domain.com, smtp.domain.com, www.domain.com. If you want to refer to your box using the convenient shorthand "domain.com", you must enter the A record (NOT alias) "domain.com." FQDN pointing to the server's fixed IP. You can also enter the convenient short MX record "domain.com." with priority 11. This will all work on the LAN -- all these settings must be mirrored on the outside internet using the service from which you registered domain.com.
You are now ready to begin turning on your services. Here are a few important details and gotchas setting up cloud services.
    Firewall
Server Admin>Firewall>Services> Open up all ports needed by whichever services you want to run and set up your router (assuming that your server sits behind a router) to port forward these ports to your router's LAN IP. This is most a straightforward exercise in grepping for the correct ports on this page, but there are several jaw-droppingly undocumented omissions of crucial ports for Push Services and Device Enrollment. If you want to enroll your iOS devices, make sure port 1640 is open. If you want Push Notifications to work (you do), then ports 2195, 2196, 5218, and 5223 must be open. The Unix commands "lsof -i :5218" and "nmap -p 5218 server.domain.com" (nmap available from Macports after installing Xcode from the App Store) help show which ports are open.
    SSH
Do this with strong security. Server.app to turn on remote logins (open port 22), but edit /etc/sshd_config to turn off root and password logins.
    PermitRootLogin no
    PasswordAuthentication no
    ChallengeResponseAuthentication no
I'm note sure if toggling the Allow remote logins will load this config file or, run "sudo launchctl unload -w /System/Library/LaunchAgents/org.openbsd.ssh-agent.plist ; sudo launchctl load -w /System/Library/LaunchAgents/org.openbsd.ssh-agent.plist" to restart the server's ssh daemon.
Then use ssh-keygen on remote client to generate public/private keys that can be used to remotely login to the server.
    client$ ssh-keygen -t rsa -b 2048 -C client_name
[Securely copy ~/.ssh/id_rsa.pub from client to server.]
    server$ cat id_rsa.pub > ~/.ssh/known_hosts
I also like DenyHosts, which emails detected ssh attacks to [email protected]. It's amazing how many ssh attacks there are on any open port 22. Not really an added security feature if you've turned off password logins, but good to monitor. Here's a Lion Server diff for the config file /usr/share/denyhosts:
    $ diff denyhosts.cfg-dist denyhosts.cfg
    12c12
    < SECURE_LOG = /var/log/secure
    > #SECURE_LOG = /var/log/secure

    < LOCK_FILE = /var/lock/subsys/denyhosts
    > #LOCK_FILE = /var/lock/subsys/denyhosts

    > LOCK_FILE = /var/denyhosts/denyhosts.pid

    Network Accounts
User Server.app to create your network accounts; do not use Workgroup Manager. If you use Workgroup Manager, as I did, then your accounts will not have email addresses specified and iCal Server WILL NOT COMPLETELY WORK. Well, at least collaboration through network accounts will be handled clunkily through email, not automatically as they should. If you create a network account using Workgroup Manager, then edit that account using Server.app to specify the email to which iCal invitations may be sent. Server.app doesn't say anything about this, but that's one thing that email address entry is used for. This still isn't quite solid on Lion Server, as my Open Directory logs on a freshly installed Lion Server are filled with errors that read:
2011-12-12 15:05:52.425 EST - Module: SystemCache - Misconfiguration detected in hash 'Kerberos':
         User 'uname' (/LDAPv3/127.0.0.1) - ID 1031 - UUID 98B4DF30-09CF-42F1-6C31-9D55FE4A0812 - SID S-0-8-83-8930552043-0845248631-7065481045-9092
    Oh well.
    Email
Email aliases are handled with the file /private/etc/postfix/aliases. Do something like this
    root:           myname
    admin:          myname
    sysadmin:       myname
    certadmin:      myname
    webmaster:      myname
    my_alternate:   myname
Then run "sudo newaliases". If your ISP is Comcast or some other large provider, you probably must proxy your outgoing mail through their SMTP servers to avoid being blocked as a spammer (a lot of SMTP servers will block email from Comcast/whatever IP addresses that isn't sent by Comcast). Use Server.app>Mail to enter your account information. Even then, the Lion Server default setup may fail using this proxy. I had to do this with the file /private/etc/postfix/main.cf:
    cd /etc/postfix
    sudo cp ./main.cf ./main.cf.no_smtp_sasl_security_options
    sudo echo 'smtp_sasl_security_options = noanonymous' >> ./main.cf
    sudo serveradmin stop mail
    sudo serveradmin start mail
Finally, make sure that you're running a blacklisting srevice yourself! Server Admin>Mail>Filter> Use spamhaus.org as a blacklister. Finally, set up mail to use strong Kerberos/MD5 settings under on Server Admin>Mail>Advanced. Turn off password and clear logins. The settings should be set to "Use" your SSL cert, NOT "Require". "Require" consistently breaks things for me.
If you already installed the server's Trust Certificate as described above (and opened up the correct ports), email to your account should be pushed out to all clients.
    iCal Server
Server.app>Calendar>Turn ON and Allow Email Invitations, Edit... . Whatever you do, do NOT enter your own email account information in this GUI. You must enter the account information for local user com.apple.calendarserver, and the password for this account, which is stored in the System keychain: Keychain Access>System> Item com.apple.servermgr_calendar. Double-click and Show Password, copy and paste into Server.app dialog. This is all described in depth here. If you enter your own account information here (DO NOT!), the iCal Server will delete all Emails in your Inbox just as soon as it reads them, exactly like it works for user com.apple.calendarserver. Believe me, you don't want to discover this "feature", which I expect will be more tightly controlled in some future update.
    Web
The functionality of Server.app's Web management is pretty limited and awful, but a few changes to the file /etc/apache2/httpd.conf will give you a pretty capable and flexible web server, just one that you must manage by hand. Here's a diff for httpd.conf:
    $ diff httpd.conf.default httpd.conf

    > # Server-specific configuration
    > # sudo apachectl -D WEBSERVICE_ON -D MACOSXSERVER -k restart
    > Include /etc/apache2/mydomain/*.conf
I did "sudo mkdir /etc/apache2/mydomain" and add specific config files for various web pages to host. For example, here's a config file that will host the entire contents of an EyeTV DVR, all password controlled with htdigest ("htdigest ~uname/.htdigest EyeTV uname"). Browsing to https://server.domain.com/eyetv points to /Users/uname/Sites/EyeTV, in which there's an index.php script that can read and display the EyeTV archive at https://server.domain.com/eyetv_archive. If you want Apache username accounts with twiddles as in https://server.domain.com/~uname, specify "UserDir Sites" in the configuration file.
    Alias /eyetv /Users/uname/Sites/EyeTV
    <Directory "/Users/uname/Sites/EyeTV">
        AuthType Digest
        AuthName "EyeTV"
        AuthUserFile /Users/uname/.htdigest
        AuthGroupFile /dev/null
        Require user uname
        Options Indexes MultiViews
        AllowOverride All
        Order allow,deny
        Allow from all
    </Directory>
    Alias /eyetv_archive "/Volumes/Macintosh HD2/Documents/EyeTV Archive"
    <Directory "/Volumes/Macintosh HD2/Documents/EyeTV Archive">
        AuthType Digest
        AuthName "EyeTV"
        AuthUserFile /Users/uname/.htdigest
        AuthGroupFile /dev/null
        Require user uname
        Options Indexes MultiViews
        AllowOverride All
        Order allow,deny
        Allow from all
    </Directory>
I think you can turn Web off/on in Server.app to relaunch apached, or simply "sudo apachectl -D WEBSERVICE_ON -D MACOSXSERVER -k restart".
Securely copy to all desired remote clients the file IntermediateCA_SERVER.DOMAIN.COM_1.cer, which you exported from System Keychain above. Add this certificate to your remote keychain and trust it, allowing secure connections between remote clients and your server. Also on remote clients: Firefox>Advanced>Encryption>View Certificates>Authorities>Import...> Import this certificate into your browser. Now there should be a secure connection to https://server.domain.com without any SSL warnings.
One caveat is that there should be a nice way to establish secure SSL to https://domain.com and https://www.domain.com, but the automagically created SSL certificate only knows about server.domain.com. I attempted to follow this advice when I originally created the cert and add these additional domains (under "Subject Alternate Name Extension"), but the cert creation UI failed when I did this, so I just gave up. I hope that by the time these certs expire, someone posts some documentation on how to manage and change Lion Server SSL scripts AFTER the server has been promoted to an Open Directory Master. In the meantime, it would be much appreciated if anyone can post either how to add these additional domain names to the existing cert, or generate and/or sign a cert with a self-created Keychain Access root certificate authority. In my experience, any attempt to mess with the SSL certs automatically generated just breaks Lion Server.
Finally, if you don't want a little Apple logo as your web page icon, create your own 16×16 PNG and copy it to the file /Library/Server/Web/Data/Sites/Default/favicon.ico. And request that all web-crawling robots go away with the file /Library/Server/Web/Data/Sites/Default/robots.txt:
    User-agent: *
    Disallow: /
    Misc
VNC easily works with iOS devices -- use a good passphrase. Edit /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/org.postgresql.postgres.plist and set "listen_addresses=127.0.0.1" to allow PostgreSQL connections over localhost. I've also downloaded snort/base/swatch to build an intrusion detection system, and used Macports's squid+privoxy to build a privacy-enhanced ad-blocking proxy server.

Privacy Enhancing Filtering Proxy and SSH Tunnel
Lion Server comes with its own web proxy, but chaining Squid and Privoxy together provides a capable and effective web proxy that can block ads and malicious scripts, and conceal information used to track you around the web. I've posted a simple way to build and use a privacy enhancing web proxy here. While you're at it, configure your OS and browsers to block Adobe Flash cookies and block Flash access to your camera, microphone, and peer networks. Read this WSJ article series to understand how this impacts your privacy. If you configure it to allow use for anyone on your LAN, be sure to open up ports 3128, 8118, and 8123 on your firewall.
If you've set up ssh and/or VPN as above, you can securely tunnel in to your proxy from anywhere. The syntax for ssh tunnels is a little obscure, so I wrote a little ssh tunnel script with a simpler flexible syntax. This script also allows secure tunnels to other services like VNC (port 5900). If you save this to a file ./ssht (and chmod a+x ./ssht), example syntax to establish an ssh tunnel through localhost:8080 (or, e.g., localhost:5901 for secure VNC Screen Sharing connects) looks like:
    $ ./ssht 8080:[email protected]:3128
    $ ./ssht 8080:alice@:
    $ ./ssht 8080:
    $ ./ssht 8018::8123
$ ./ssht 5901::5900  [Use the address localhost:5901 for secure VNC connects using OS X's Screen Sharing or Chicken of the VNC (sudo port install cotvnc)]
    $ vi ./ssht
    #!/bin/sh

  • How do I create a horizontal nav-bar with CSS, set to an exact width?

I have a problem that I need help with. All I need to do is
to create a simple text-based horizontal navigation bar using CSS.
I have seen many CSS tutorials online about how to make a
horizontal navigation bar using unordered lists, but they all seem
to either set the bar to be centred or to the full width of the
page, or if they do set it to be a certain width, then the buttons
within that width are centred within pre-defined widths for each
    one.
Unfortunately none of these help me - let me explain my
    scenario...
I have an area that is exactly 700px wide. In this area I
want to put 5 text hyperlinks.
I want the first text-link to be aligned to the left of my
700px width, and I want the last text-link to be aligned to the
    right of the 700px width.
I want the spaces between each of these text-links to all be
    the same.
The only definite known width is the overall 700px. I will
not know the width of each text-link, as (a) they are all live
text, and (b) the phrases for each could change.
I have mocked up a quick diagram showing in more detail
    precisely what I mean:
    http://www.nothowitlooks.com/temp/navbar.gif
Can anyone please help me with this?
    Thanks.

some things simply can't be done or don't make any sense in
    the Web. Even a
    >client has to accept that. Let them write wishes to Santa

    >but they have to accept the rules of the medium they're
    working with.
    >Period.
    > Wrong, wrong, silly comment and wrong.
    >
    > To elaborate: firstly, with regards to design,
    everything can be done, it's
    >simply a matter of how.
Only in your fantasy. In practice there are always some
    limits enforced
by the used material or technology. You simply can't violate
    such basic
rules and laws, even if you would like to.
    >Whether you use text, images, tables, CSS, or even
    >Flash, the objective is first to design the site with
    both your client's and
    >their customers needs and expectations, and then to build
    it, regardless of how
    >difficult-to-code that design may or may not be.
It always looks good on paper, but not every design can be
    turned into
practice. This not only applies to web design, but to almost
    every kind
of development. Often enough you have to find compromises or
    workarounds
if the engineers say "won't work". The problem is that many
    designers
don't understand this or don't want to. They're just thinking
    and living
in their perfect theoretical world, but have no idea of how
    things work
in the real world. And many theoretical things simply don't
    work there.
Each medium has its own rules and laws. Some things may work
    well for a
printed paper for example, but not in the Web and vice versa.
    Of course
you can try to break these rules, but you'll definitely fail.
    >You should not compromise your
    >design because of a lack of coding knowledge.
It's not lack if coding knowledge if you refuse to try things
    that are
impossible or don't make sense. It's quite the opposite,
    because you
don't have to waste your time with something that won't work
    at all.
    >If you don't know how to do it
    >yourself, then find out how to do it (which is what I was
    *originally* trying
    >to do here, remember?).
Quite easy. Surf the web, and if you see something like what
    you want,
just have a look at the source code or post the URL here. If
    it can be
done, then it already has been done. Just show us an example
    and we'll
    happily explain it to you.
    > Secondly, no, a client does NOT have to accept that
    "some things simply can't
    >be done or don't make any sense in the Web".
Sure they have. The client is not always king. And if they
    insist on
stupid things and always know it better - why the hell are
    they hiring
you instead of doing it themselves? If they want their work
    to be done
by an expert, they should also _listen_ to that expert and
    let him do
his work properly instead of telling him how he should do it.
    That's not
    going to work.
    >Like I said earlier, some clients
    >are not interested in hearing about how what they want
    cannot be done, and any
    >attempts to tell them so only serve to convince them to
    take their work, and
    >their money, to someone else. Most clients, thankfully,
    are adaptable and
    >willing to reason. However, some are not, and if these
    clients take their money
    >elsewhere, you lose the job and you don't get paid. It's
    that simple.
Let's say you want a little film to be made about whatever.
    Would you
tell the director where he should position the cameras, the
    lights and
all the stuff? He already knows _what_ you want to get, so
    why don't you
just let him decide _how_ to do it? It's his job! And if he
    says that
filming directly towards bright sunlight usually doesn't work
    well, you
    should respect his expert opinion.
    >
    quote:

    to make enemies. I am
    >here to get help with a coding problem. When people offer
    "alternative advice"
    >that hinders my progress in finding a solution, I tell
    them so. I give back
    >what I get.
You asked for advice and you got proper answers. We really
    don't need
people here just looking for the answers they want to hear.
    Often enough
people are coming here looking for a cure to a particular
    problem, while
it would be much easier to avoid that problem right from the
    beginning.
Of course if they don't want to hear such alternatives -
    their problem.
    > Secondly, I was not aware that "regulars" to this site
    had any special
    >"insult-free privileges" or suchlike that newcomers did
    not.
It's not the best idea to bite the hand that feeds you. It's
    the group's
regulars who answer almost all of the questions here. And

So do we. If someone wants something that's not possible or
    not going to
work, we'll "make our opinions known". After all that's what
    a free
    discussion board/forum/group is for.

With pure CSS and text links it can't be done within the
    given
constraints. I even doubt that it's possible with a table. So
    either
drop the fixed 700px width or the equal space between the
    buttons.

You can keep the 'e'. In German we have more than enough of
    them.
And if you would be familiar with web design, then you would
    have known
where this ironic "error message" came from.
    Your turn.
