How do I fix a suddenly dead slow iMac?

About 10 days ago my previously rock solid 2006 iMac began running dead slow. I mean open safari come back in 20 minutes and the window might be open slow. Since then, I've experimented with repairing the hard drive, repairing permissions, erasing the (internal) hard drive and reinstalling snow leopard, attempting to reload my data from an external drive using system restore, migration assistant, time machine, and drag and drop.  Every time I get more than just the basic operating system on the hard drive, the system slows down again. I've also reset the PRAM several times. Does this sound like it could be anything but a hard drive failure?

Even with all the files loaded, I've used up only about 60% of the hard drive space. Another note... when I run the repair permissions diagnostic after adding additional files I get pages of things that required fixing. This is even if I've just copied one pages file from the backup. Not sure if this is relevant or not (maybe this happens all the time and I only just noticed it).
I still think it't the HD, if you have a copy of Disk Warrior I'd try using that. If you don't you can get a license or if you take it in for service either your local Apple Store or AASP will have a license.
As for the messages in Repair Permissions please read Disk Utility's Repair Disk Permissions messages that you can safely ignore

  • NL925: How do I fix my suddenly-stoped -working mi...

    Hi everyone
I have been using my phone for more than 3 months now and today I took a video. To my surprise, there was no audio recorded. I tried using the Voice command (Long press Windows key) and it does not pick up my voice. I tried the voice option in the search, and I got the same result - no audio being detected.
When I call people, they could hear me. When I turn to speakerphone, that's when it stops working as well.
    How do I fix this?
    Thanks.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Try soft resetting your phone by pressing volume down + lock key for about 10-15 seconds, until your phone vibrates and release the buttons, this will reboot your phone.
If this doesn't fix the problem, there may be a hardware failure, which means you may need to visit a nokia care center.
    The silence will fall

  • Is there a fix for my intolerably slow iMac?

I will greatly appreciate any help provided by the community - whether it's harsh reality or a miraculous fix.
My beloved 24" iMac (Early 2009, 2.66 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3, NVIDIA GeForce 9400 256 MB) - which ran like a dream all the way through 10.6.xx has been booted back to 2001 in terms of speed.  Even the simplest of things like opening Mail, launching Chrome or even copying files bring up the dreaded rainbow wheel and sometimes take 3-5 minutes to launch and return keyboard and mouse control to me. Photoshop and Aperture are virtually unusable.  A simple crop in Photoshop has caused a total system hang and working with any file over say 20MB in size becomes a game of patience, waiting and resisting the urge to put my fist through the glass out of frustration.
I'm a Mac user since 1993 and I've never been forced to downgrade the OS.  I've either ponied up and bought a newer model, or refused to upgrade the OS after learning a particular OS rendered my model unusable.  Well, I received poor information this time and this iMac went from a graphic and web production machine to being a glorified web browser (and even that is slow, jerky and unreliable).
Is there a cure for my woes short of trying to find my original install DVD and retrograding the entire thing back to 10.6?  I'm loathe to do this becaue this will render as useless several programs I use regularly - Coda for example and all of my Apple apps - iPhoto, Aperture, and who knows what else.  Based on the fact that I try to keep all my software current at all times, it could start an endless backward spiral that makes the situation even worse than it is already.
I am not in a position to upgrade with a new OS on the horizon and the current iMac crop aging as well - in fact, now would be perhaps the worst time to jump to a new machine.  Nor do I wish to lug this beast over to the Apple store and waste an afternoon waiting for a Genius to tell me to buy a new system.
I simply need to make the right choice this time instead of the wrong choice, which was installing Lion, and I could use some advice.
    most sincerely,
    Dave Bias

Well seeing as I'm running Lion on 2 GB of RAM, I can't see how upgrading the RAM will make that much of a difference.    If you are seeing launch times in minutes, it probably indicates your cache got corrupted by some third party cache cleaning software.  To see if some corruption can be fixed, first backup your data:
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-1992
Then boot in safe mode, holding the shift key.  If issues persist in safe mode, run the hardware test that came with your Mac.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303081
And if that is unrevealing, and booting into safe mode doesn't solve anything, and you are backed up, try repairing the directory by:
    1. Booting into the restore partition with command-R.
    2. Selecting the installer's Utilities menu.
    3. Selecting Disk Utility
    4. Selecting First Aid
    5. Selecting the boot partition.
    6. Click on repair disk (not repair permissions)
Do NOT proceed with any install itself.  Just quit the install program
If the disk is not able to be repaired, purchase Alsoft Disk Warrior, and boot of that to repair the directory.
If it is able to be repaired, and the machine is still slow, I think you may have run into some RAM that is bad, and need to replace it, not add to it.
If Disk Warrior can't repair the hard disk, replace the hard disk itself.

  • How do I fix this - my 24 inch imac indicates its screen is 16.5 inch

My 24 inch iMac began displaying everything much bigger than normal today.  The system preferences display resolution is set to 1280 x 800 which is normal, but in Displays under the About this Mac it says the display is 16.5 inches.
What happened? And how do I fix this?

Click on the Desktop, select Help->Mac Help->search for ZOOM and you'll probably find that you've inadvertently activated an Universal Access setting.

  • How to i fix a flicker on my iMac screen?

My imac screen has just started flickering. I have researched it and it already a promblem with other mac's. How is this problem fixed? Thanks

You could reset the pram and smc to see if that helps. I would however suggest if the machine is within waranty you contact your local Apple store as this sounds like  a hardware fault to be honest.

  • How can i fix intermittent wifi connection on imac 21"?

What I have is a mid-2011 iMac 21" entry-level computer. I was able to run wirelessly for about a year with no issues but lately my wifi connection intermittently drops every 10 minutes and it becomes very frustrating. My brother who is also using the exact same model connects to the same belkin router just fine. My iPhone 4S, my iPad, my brother's iPhone5 and the other computers in the house works just fine as well. I install all updates recommended. I would like to know if there is a workaround to get this issue fixed. Thank you.

    Hello, dee.tercias.
Sometimes a simple power cycle of the router can correct the issue that you are experiencing.  However, the issue could be a little more complex.  Wi-Fi routers need adjustments to settings periodically for optimized performance with the constant progression of wireless device technology.  Below, I have included two articles.  The first article will cover basic Wi-Fi troubleshooting.  The second article covers the recommended settings for current Wi-Fi access points.

  • How can I fix the screen in my iMac G3?

I bought a 2000 Ruby iMac at a yard sale for $25. It runs great except for a 4x4 section in the bottom left corner is stuck on a green tinge, and everything fades to a pinkish purple on the right side. I re-callibrated the colors in system preferences, but that didn't work. Is there anything else I can do to fix it?

Without seeing the image it is difficult to be certain. Two possibilities come to mind - one is that the iMac was left in the presence of a strong magnetic field for a long time, in which case sufficient time will fix the problem on its own. The iMac's CRT de-gausses itself every time it powers up. If it had been in storage for a long time I think this is a likely cause, and since fixing it involves doing nothing, the easiest to address!
If it doesn't get better I would suspect the iMac was dropped or otherwise abused such that the CRT is in need of alignment, something that is performed when it was assembled and never intended to be perfomed ever again. From what I understand that is an incredibly tedious exercise, generally considered not worth the effort.
Here is a website that may be useful: http://home.earthlink.net/~strahm_s/manuals.html
There is a display adjustment utility that may be applicable to  your needs, but it appears to predate OS X. It might run in Classic. Also see if the iMac can boot OS 9.
Another possibility is to find another iMac with a compatible monitor, given away or sold for reasons other than a bad CRT.
    Good luck!

How can I fix this on my 2014 iMac, please?
Verifying permissions for “Macintosh HD”Group differs on “Library/Printers/InstalledPrinters.plist”; should be 80; group is 0.Permissions differ on “Library/Printers/InstalledPrinters.plist”; should be -rw-rw-rw- ; they are -rw-r--r-- .User differs on “private/var/db/displaypolicyd”; should be 0; user is 244.Group differs on “private/var/db/displaypolicyd”; should be 0; group is 244.

  • My iMac has suddenly become very slow to wake from "sleep." Why? How can I fix this?

My iMac has suddenly become very slow to wake from "sleep." How do I fix this and what is causing the problem? Even the mouse wakes very slowly.

    Try these basic troubleshooting steps.
    1. Quit all app scompletely and restart the iPad. Go to the home screen first by tapping the home button. Double tap the home button and the task bar will appear with all of your recent/open apps displayed at the bottom. Tap and hold down on any app icon until it begins to wiggle. Tap the minus sign in the upper left corner of the app that you want to close. Tap the home button or anywhere above the task bar. Restart the iPad.
Restart the iPad by holding down on the sleep button until the red slider appears and then slide to shut off. To power up hold the sleep button until the Apple logo appears and let go of the button.
    2. Reset the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons.
    3. Go to Settings>Safari>Clear History, Cookies and Data. Restart the iPad. Restart the iPad by holding down on the sleep button until the red slider appears and then slide to shut off. To power up hold the sleep button until the Apple logo appears and let go of the button.

  • How do I fix the problem 'disk is too slow' and what does it mean anyway?

I'm transferring casete tapes to the Mac via the input line. I've transferrred nearly 100 with no prouble, but sudddenly today two things have gone wrong (see separate question for the other one). This one is that suddenly the error message 'Disk is too slow' comes up. also the track (the top one, not the bottom edit section one) is bright red instead ofthe usual dark purple.
What's gone wrong and how do I fixit?

Sorry about the lack of terms: lazy of me I admit. Having read up Garageband Help, I think I've got the answers. Yes, by the top part I mean the track in the timeline. The bottom part is the same track showing up in what is headed the 'Audio Region' The bright red is the colour the track is in the timeline during recording, and it stays like that until after stopping recording I click somewhere in the timeline section (not necessarily on the track itself) at which time it just goes the normal kind of dull greyish colour an unselected region does.
Thanks for telling me how to see the HD info. Its 250GB, of which I've used about 23GB. The first computer I worked on as a programmer back in 1962 had a 400KB drum (the first disks didn't arrive until 1963) as its random access backing store - and yes, that is a K. The machine also came with 12KB of RAM and 4 tape decks, was the size of a hotel kitchen, and cost about $200,000. You young people don't know how lucky you are

I have an iphone and i was sending a multimedia message and all of a sudden the phone turned off and will not turn back on. We have been charging it for almost half an hour or more and it still hasn't turned on. How do we fix it?

Wine, were you charging over the USB Connection or AC Power?  We've found in our organization that at times not enough power is generated over USB to recharge it in situations like this...I quote from the email of a fellow technician that i just received today...
I’ve had a couple of users up here bring their iPhones to me so dead that the phone was unresponsive, no matter what we did. One thing that many people do not realize is that the iPhone (iOS devices in general) have power management in them. The power management appears to be set up so that the device will not power on at all until the battery is at a certain minimum level. If the user will plug the device into the power adapter, not a USB port on a computer (laptops especially), and leave it for about an hour, maybe longer, the device will come back to life.
The reason I say they have to use the power adapter is because the USB port is not high enough power to bring the charge up fast enough for the battery to come back out of “hibernation”.
Each time I have had the users do the power adapter plug in, and leave it for a couple of hours, the devices have come back to life
    Hope this helps
