How do I get a Metalic look to a surface?

I'm working on making a 3D logo for a client. They've generated a 3D image in Solidworks (Two letters of text). I import it into Photoshop and convert it to a psd and then into Shake for further processing as Photoshop won't let you apply filters to a 3D object. I've achieved something kinda metal looking using the solarize node but I'd like to get a better effect if I could. To complicate matters the client wants the object to be dark, preferable as close to black as possible, which really makes it harder. Any tips or tricks would be appreciated.

I would approach it the same way as in photoshop.
Logo- re order node (settings nnna)
Reorder- Rand
Rand- Blur (pixels X setting to like 200-250)
Put all your color correction between the Rand and blur nodes.
Dont forget to stop the Rand node from animating...if you dont want it to flicker.

I recognise this but the prints never look as good as they do on the screen why is this? They are always lighter, darker and just not as punchy. It's very inconsistent.

I wouldn't have upgraded if I had the choice. I saw the new look months ago and hated it. I even emailed Apple back then, like they even read what customers want anyway! I started using my iPad this morning to find that several apps didn't work, including my mobile banking app. I hate the upgrade, but had no choice if I wanted to use the apps I use most. Apple is forcing everyone to "upgrade" to its tacky new look. I want detail and color on my iPad. The retina display does not make the new stick figure drawing that my 5 year old could do look any better. It's not a cleaner, more streamlined look. It's a cheap and tacky look!

It sounds like the tracks may be missing from your iTunes library. When tracks in iTunes display a it means the file cannot be located; it may have been moved or deleted. If it cannot be located, this may cause the issue of not being copied to your iPod. For this issue, we will need to refer to the following article:

Line art file suddenly looks pixelated. How do I get it to look smooth onscreen?

File was fine...lines smooth now even the fonts looks jagged. I don't know what changed in my file but can't find anything in preferences!!
Raster effects is still at 300dpi.

check the layers pallet.
things can get pixelated, or look so, when you put many on top of each other.
ie. with the bottom text I copied it then hit paste in front a few times.

When you install OOo (version 2.2.1-3), some of the output in the termial says
use "export OOO_FORCE_DESKTOP=kde" or
use "export OOO_FORCE_DESKTOP=gnome" to preset your desired look,
or put it in /etc/profile, rc.local, or ~/.bashrc.
I have tried copying the line "export OOO_FORCE_DESKTOP=gnome" (without quotes) to my /etc/profile. Nothing changed, still looks like stock OOo.
Then tried to open soffice using info from the wiki: http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/OpenOffice#Setup

Again, no change. When soffice opens, it is the stock OOo appearance.
Tried adding "export OOO_FORCE_DESKTOP=gnome" (no quotes) into~.bashrc as noted in the wiki. Did not work, still stock OOo appearance.
Searching the our forums, Google, and the Arch wiki has yet to give me a clue. Looked at the 2.2.1-3 PKGBUILD, GTK switch is set to 'enable'.

I might be wrong but I believe you want export OOO FORCE_DESKTOP=gnome...NOT OOO_FORCE_DES... (remove the '_' between OOO and FORCE.) Thats what I have and looks fine to me.

I have downloaded updates for Firefox but my browser doesn't look like it should, no single menu button etc, how do I get it to look like your demo?

The last few times I have been prompted to update my firefox for desktop, my browser has not looked any different even though I get notification to say updates completed successfully. When I update firefox gives a demo of new features and how my browser should look, mine has not looked like the demo for the past few updates. It's annoying because I really like the look of having just one menu button. How can I change the look of my browser?

Loaded new version of iTunes.How do I get the old look back?

I loaded the new version. Not sure I had a choice. Now I don't see the slide bar on the right side or bottom.And I don't the song count, size, and length at the bottom. I'd like to get the look I had before. How do I do that? Please help!!

In the old version, when I logged in to the store, it automatically updated the podcasts to which I was subscribed. The new format carries no dates and very little identification so that I know what I don't yet have when I go to a new podcast. The music I searched for was sorely lacking; I know they have more Brubeck than what I found because I have done a similar search in the past and there were many more choices. It's just a mess trying to find what I want. I'm afraid to plug in the iPod for fear of this new program screwing up what I have. I don't want to have to reload all my music and reorganize it. It's good to know I'm not alone in my dissatisfaction. And Apple makes it very difficult to give them direct feedback. Most sites at least have a "Contact Us" option. I've gotten a ton of email since I posted this afternoon. Hope that wasn't a mistake.

Here's the problem: So on my old HP laptop I had around 5500 song files saved/stored in various locations all compiled for easy access through iTunes, as in I could access all of them there; standard, no problems, what everyone expects.
On it's last limb I completely backed the computer's C drive contents to an external harddrive. What I didn't expect was that there would be no organizational structure of the backup: merely 3 folders each containing a series of ~50-300 subfolders of backed up content (zipped, at that time, mind you). Around 88 GB in all, which is interesting because it was 140GB in size on the hp before being backed up.
Towards the process of unzipping all of them, I unzipped only the very first sub folder which contained around 50 song files (this isn't to say each folder just has songs; there's tons of other random files ranging from documents to programs to random coding) before opening iTunes for the first time.
This part is critical to understanding my issue. When I opened iTunes for the very first time and it was initializing its components, doing a startup etc., I had only unzipped that one folder; none of the hundreds of others had yet been unloaded onto my mac's harddrive and viewable as downloads.
During the guided installation process iTunes prompted me at one point and asked if it wanted to "search for music already on this computer" or something like that. I said yes and it seamlessly uploaded the 50 or so songs.
The problem is I wish I had waited until I unziped everything because I don't know how to access that feature again, in that I do not want to manually dig through each download folder and upload songs individually when I know there's a feature that can look through my computer's hard drive for me and upload mp3 and similar files in a fraction on an instant. For example, when I downloaded and opened Spotify, it did this on it's own (although it included a bunch of duplicate files so there's around 7700). Some may question why I don't just use Spotify for my library then and I'd respond by saying I don't like it, I'm not used to it, and iTunes is more compatible/easier to customize, create playlists, sync with iPhone, iPod, etc.
I've even tried completely uninstalling and reinstalling iTunes (using this method: http://www.iclarified.com/entry/index.php?enid=4045) to no avail; once I opened it again for the first time after reinstallation it already has included only those ~50 songs and doesn't prompt that "search for music on this computer" feature or whatever. I actually think that feature accompanied my mac as a startup, when I started the computer for the first time from factory settings.
I'm hesitant to completely wipe my computer because one, I've already been using it for a couple weeks and don't want to do another back up (I'm not very mac savvy if you can't already tell) and two I don't even know if that will work.
I want all my songs from my computer all accessible to one area: iTunes. Please help!

In itunes preferences, Advanced make sure the two following options are checked
Keep Itunes Media Folder organised
Copy files to itunes Media folder when adding to library
The box above that should have your iTunes Media folder path
/Users/username/Music/iTunes/itunes Media.
If you still have the original 50 songs on your harddrive delete them form itunes. Then drag your external Hard Drive icon into itunes and it should identify and copy all your music files to your new machines.
Check that everything is there then you can do a freah backup to the external drive with everything in its correct folder

How can I get a better looking NTSC video showing on an Apple TV?

Filming on Mini DV tapes using a JVC GY-DV500 camcorder. Capturing via Firewire 400.
What I've been doing is capturing and editing with the DV NTSC 48 khz presets. I export "using QuickTime conversion" for Apple TV. The problem I have is that the video looks extremely pixelated when viewing it on the screen or computer. It looks like square pixels instead of non-square.
I realize that I'm blowing up a 720x480 signal onto an HD screen hooked to an HD source, but it's still a very low-quality look for that. I've tried setting the Apple TV to 480p or exporting at different qualities using different codecs.
If I try to capture with a different preset (ie. DV50 NTSC) I get the error that it had trouble reading from the source tape. (Is that because it's going through a daisy chain? The camcorder has FW400 but the Mac Pro only has a bunch of FW800.)
My thought process is that an SD television channel looks much better than this so my SD material should be equal quality. Where am I losing it? Capture? Editing? Export?

I don't know what AppleTV can handle as far as bit rate is concerned, but increase the bit rate as high as it will let you. You are taking DV which is 25Mb/s and compressing it. If you're making an H.264, you should get great results needing no more than 6Mb/s. Bear in mind, the higher the bit rate, the larger the file size.

Firefox used to look OK until it upgraded itself. I do NOT like the small search box and the list of available languages plus other admin. options when I open Firefox. What you had before looked more like the entry screen to a search engine, but your recent upgrade makes it look like an Options page after you have entered something and whilst it is still deciding which language you wish to use.
I would like to be using a more professional looking HomePage and would like to know how to restore the screen display to something like was offered in the previous version!

Why should I have to install potentially destabilizing / potentially security risky add ons to fix what the mozilla developers should never have messed with?

I was having the problem of fuzzy fonts in Terminal (which I use a lot, being a UNIX guy). I use 14 pt Bold Courier New a lot, and it was fuzzy after my SL upgrade on a 21" iMac (2 Ghz dual core). I finally discovered the "antialias text" button in the Terminal preferences. In my case it was turned on for all of my terminals that had fuzzy fonts. I unclicked this button in all of my terminal preferences, and voila, clear fonts again.

I have two versions of my site (one slightly more updated than the other) on my hd, and want to point iweb to the newer one. I know how to point iweb to where it will be pulishing TO, as in godaddy, or my dropbox or whatever. But how do I change the folder it is publishing FROM, the folder that holds the site materials.

Just launch the application, find and select the domain file in your Home/Library/Application Support/iWeb folder that you want to open and it will open with iWeb. It modifies the iWeb preference file each time it's launched so one can switch between domain files.
WARNING: iWeb Switch Domain will overwrite an existing Domain.sites2 file if you select to create a new domain in the same folder. So rename your domain files once they've been created to something other than the default name.
