The MPEG1 compression format was not developed by Apple and does not share Apple's QT temporal synchronization technology. As such it (like MPEG2, Flash, and other third-party proprietary compression formats) is not "fully" supported by nor can it be edited in the QT structural environment. In this case, use an MPEG based third-party application like MPEG Streamclip (free), iSquint (free), Visual Hub ($$), etc. to convert your files to an intermediate compression format for editing in iMovie.
Would normally recommend DV as the intermediate format for FCP, FCE, and older versions of iMovie to avoid a secondary conversion during import. However, iMovie '08 will accept and edit in a number of different compression formats. DV is, of course still acceptable and is a reasonably fast conversion with reasonably high relative quality. Unfortunately, Animation (a very quick, higher quality compression format often used for intermediate conversions) is not properly exported at this time by iMovie '08 and should be avoided at least for the present. AIC (Apple intermediate Codec) is also a high quality compression format that could be used but is somewhat slower in conversion speed and, like DV and Animation, produces rather large files for editing. At the opposite end are codecs like MPEG4/AAC and H.264/AAC. These produce much smaller files for editing which are somewhat reduced in quality.

  • Mpg videos from pc to iMovie 11

Help! I am a new apple user and am trying to import my mpg videos from my pc to my imac with imovie 11.  I have tried several processes.  What is the best way to import them to imovie so I can edit and burn DVDs.  These are all home videos that I want to create DVDs for.
The best result I have had so far is to convert them to mpeg4 in the pc using arcsoft converter.  Then use external hard drive to import them to imac.  They show in iphoto and play fine.  However they are all dated with the date of import instead of the date taken, which will cause a nightmare.  I also can not get them loaded into imovie.
I have also tried to import them into the mac as mpg format and use mpeg streamclip to convert them, but when I try to export as DV it give me any error that I need a $20 program.  I have read this program should be in os x 10.8.5 but is it?   I don't have a problem with purchasing the player if I know it is the solution I need.
Please help as I am ready to go back to pc...  The photo and movie editing is the reason I am trying to become a Mac user. Thank you for any help you can give.

In order to use MPEG Streamclip, you do need to install the MPEG2 Playback Component - see these instructions from their website:
I had to follow those instructions as well; I had already purchased the Playback Component several years ago so I was able to use that. You can purchase it here:
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/D2187Z/A/quicktime-mpeg-2-playback-component-f or-mac-os-x
As for using iMovie and burning DVDs, you might want to consider using the older version of iMovie (if you still have it as the new version install leaves the older one in place) as the new version is very cloud-centric and meant to be "shared" via Twitter, Facebook, etc, etc. and only has one option to save to file with very few options to control the quality.

  • How to transfer videos from iPhoto to iMovie '11

I can't seem to understand how to put my videos from iphoto over to imovie.

    Hi,
Can you say what you have tried?
    I do it this way:
    - after importing the videos into iphoto, close iphoto
    - close imovie if you have it open
    - reopen imovie
you should see a dialog box saying imovie is generating thumbnails. Allow it to do so.
I don't know why closing the applications, then restarting imovie works, but it may help you.

  • How do I get 720p res video from ipod to mac

I'm told the default video res setting on the 4th gen Ipod touch is 720p. The only way I can currently get a video that I've shot to my Imac is to e-mail it to myself, which works but knocks the res way down. Do I have to purchase a third party software to transfer a full 720p video that I've shot to my Mac? Anybody had success with a particular piece of software?

  • How do I move videos from iphoto to imovie

I've got a new macbook pro 17", Pegasus 12TB, and all manner of photos and videos. Ive recently upgraded from a G5. Hence, I took a variety of USB drives and found all sorts of photos and videos, FCE stuff, and basically did my best to consolidate them into either Aperture 3.x (kept up to date) and iMovie (latest updates). I keep all my software updated as soon as any update is released.
I am finally learning a bit about how to use a laptop with tons of information (pic/vids mostly). It wasn't as easy as I thought. Needless to say, the laptop is the cruncher of information and the pegasus is a screamer with speed. I am moving all my files (aperture libarary, iphoto library, and FCE stuff) to the pegasus seeing as the cute little internal HD doesn't hold much.
I've been able to find out how to move iMovie files from my internal drive and various other asundry of external FW800 drive into the pegasus 12TB to consolidate them in one place. All seems well after a few months of figuring this out, getting a quasi-workflow going.
Now I'm stuck a bit. I have Aperture and iPhoto showing up in my event library as having vidoes. I used to use iPhoto to manage videos that were simple point and shoot camera style vids. I now want to take the many files and do the same as I've done with all other video: move the video files under iMovie control on the Pegasus.
Problem: I can't seem to make this work except in one fashion: drag each and every individual clip over to an event in iMovie under Pegasus drive. Talk about time consuming!  Not only that, it doesn't move it, it copies it. Then I have to go back and delete it in iphoto.
I've tried making a smart folder in iPhoto to find videos and then hopefully export them to the desktop. Then I could import into iMovie on the pegasus. No go. Can't find the videos. They are somehow scattered about inside of iPhoto in such a manner that I can't seem to find them unless I open each project and manuall search them out. I'm sure I'm doing something wrong here, has to be an easier way.
I tried highlighting all the videos on iphoto that show up in the imovie events library and just doing a mass drag/drop. Not go. Just doesn't do it. Ignores me.
    I'm out of ideas.
How does one get video scattered around inside of iPhoto (and to a lesser extent, aperture) so that I can consolidate them under iMovies control on the pegasus?
    Thanks
    Robert

iMovie can access those movies that are inside iPhoto. Just look in the Event pane of iMovie and click on the iPhoto icon:
All of the movies in iPhoto will be displayed at the right where you can access them for whatever project you'd like.
Otherwilse you'd have to export all of them out of iPhoto using the File ➙ Export ➙ File Export menu option and use the Format = Original option.  Them move them into a folder in the Movies fodler and let iMovie find them there. Then you'd have to do that each time you import a movie into iPhoto or manually upload the photos and movies ot a folder on your Desktop and then import the photos only into iPhoto and move the movie files into the Movie folder.

  • How do I move about 70 little videos from iPhoto into iMovie so I can edit them and add music.  I don't have iDVD.

I need help with a problem!  Last year I bought a new camcorder and my first iMac (OSX).  My first movie was in New York City, so it's very special to me.
When I got home, I made a short New York City movie in iMovies but somehow I have deleted it all in iMovies.  When I look in iPhotos, all the individual clips are there as short little movies (there are about 80 of them, all lasting a few seconds).  Is there any way I can move those individual clips back into iMovie and have it back to where I started so that I can replace what I lost and I also to do some additional editing.  Any help would be appreciated.

Why is there no iDVD on my new Mac? How do I get it and how do I install it?
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3673
To burn a DVD with iDVD from the latest version of iMovie, you have to export the movie using the Export button and select 480p as the size. Open iDVD and start a new project, then drag that exported movie file into the iDVD menu window, avoiding any drop zones you see.

This screenshot shows which previous versions of iPhoto are compatible with Mavericks.  It also indicates which versions qualify for a free upgradeto iPhoto 9.5.1 and which require a purchase:

If iPhoto is presently working as expected, I would try some basic troubleshooting first, then restart the computer and try again.

  • Moving mpg clips from iPhoto to iMovie

I have iMovie '08 on my MacBookPro. Months ago I took 6 short video clips with my Sony DSLR H1 camera and uploaded them by mistake to iPhoto where they reside as mpg files that open easily as Quicktime movies when I click on the image. I have tried to move these clips to iMovie by dragging them from iphoto, or exporting them, then saving them as files in Finder and exporting or dragging them. They never stay in the iMovie event library. I sometimes get a box that says the clips are not compatible with iMovie. Is there some trick I can use to get these clips into iMovie? Can I convert the clip format to make them compatible? I have since learned my lesson and uploaded clips from the camera directly to iMovie and though they are marginal in quality they did make it into the event library. Thanks for any advice you can offer.

Normally, there would be an "iPhoto" event in your event library and you can access the movie there.
If it is not there, or if you just want to move it to iMovie, I would recommend that you download MPEG Streamclip, which is free. Drag the mpg file into MPEG Streamclip. Then use FILE/EXPORT TO QUICKTIME to export the file as an Apple Intermediate Codec file in the original dimensions. After saving this file in a place you can find it, open iMovie and click FILE/IMPORT/FROM FILE.

  • How do I import all my movies from iPhoto to iMovie at once?

I have years of movies in iPhoto and would like to export them to iPhoto all at once.  Is there a way to search for all movies and export/import them to iMovie?

    Hey there tkeale,
You can access the videos in your iPhoto library the same way you access photos, that way you don't have to go about copying the videos to the desktop from iPhoto and then importing them to iMovie and waste all that hard drive space.
iMovie (2013): Add photos and video clips from iPhoto or Aperture
Add a photo from your iPhoto or Aperture library
In the Libraries list, select your iPhoto or Aperture library.
    Do any of the following:
To browse albums: Choose Albums from the pop-up menu at the top of the browser, and then scroll through the thumbnails of the photos in the selected album.
To browse events: Choose Events from the pop-up menu at the top of the browser, and then scroll through the thumbnails of the photos in the selected event.
Events only appear in your iPhoto library.
To browse faces: Choose Faces from the pop-up menu at the top of the browser, and then scroll through the thumbnails of the photos in the selected event.
To browse projects: Choose Projects from the pop-up menu at the top of the browser, and then scroll through the thumbnails of the photos in the selected project.
Projects only appear in your Aperture library.
To find a photo by its filename or keywords: Use the search field at the top of the browser.
Select the photo you want to use to see a preview in the viewer.
    Do one of the following:
To insert the photo: Drag it to the timeline between clips or between a clip and a transition.
As you drag, a blue box appears in the timeline, indicating where the photo will appear in the timeline.
To replace a clip with the photo: Drag the photo on top of a clip in the timeline.
As you drag, a white border appears around the clip in the timeline. When you release the mouse button, choose Replace from the menu that appears. The photo replaces the clip in the timeline.
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
    Cheers,
    Sterling
