How do I get my HP Officejet 6500A plus off idle?

I sent documents to be sent to my HP Officejet 6500A Plus and the printer list indicates the printer is connected (wireless) and the list of documents to print shows it is printing but the heading after connected to printer reads "idle".
This is the first printing problem I have had with the printer after a few months of use and frequent printing. I use a mac with snow lepard 10.6.8

Hi,
The scan settings need to be changed at HP Scan app. Launch the HP scan application from your computer and  select the option on left side (PDF or JPEG....) then choose the scanning size as legal on the right.
Save it and close the app.
Now you can scan in legal.
Note:
Also you can create your own scan settings from HP Scan settings.
Happy Printing

  • I cannot get my HP Officejet 6500A Plus 710N to print in color. I have reinstalled the drivers..

I cannot get my HP Officejet 6500A Plus 710N to print in color. I have reinstalled the drivers.  It used to print in color and just stopped.  I think it may be a settings issue?  I have checked the ink levels and they are all fine. When I print a diagnostic report on print qualify, the black prints well, but there is no color printing.

Okay, I had the same problem. It's most likely your printhead. All you have to due is clean it.
Note: I was sceptical of this approach but can fully attest to it's sound results as it restored my printer back to full functionality. Prior to this the printer only would print Black ink.
The print head is the carriage that holds all of your ink cartridges in the printer. On the 6500A it's super easy to remove. Opent your lid like your changing your ink cartridges. Remove all of your ink cartridges. Once they're out. There is a lever on the left side of the carrier that holdes your ink cartridges. Lift it up and the print head comes right out. Net take your print head to the sink and run it under hot water aiming towards the the four cirles were the ink flows into. Keep running it under the hot water until it is coming out clear. It's okay to run it under the bottom part too infact you'll need to inorder to get it completely rinsed out. Also don't touch the computer metal strips with your hand thought you can run water over them. Once your done rinsing use a blow dryer or a can of compressed air (thats what I did) to dry every thing out. I was able to get everything dry in about 5 minutes or so. Let it sit for a few minutes and check it again for water. I recommend moving it around to get full exposure to insure it is dry. Also if you use a hair dryer try to put it on a cold setting since there ar rubber grommets the surrount the inlet ink ports you wouldn't want to melt them with the hot air etc.. Like I said I used a can of compressed air.  It's important to use a quick method of drying as mentioned otherwise mineral particles could become deposited on the unit. This won't happen with the methods as I've described because the molecules won't be able to bond since your blowint them off. Oh yeah, you'll want to place a clean peice of paper down as your blowing because at first you'll end up with a few black jet marks as your blowing. Also don't wear your favorite white shirt lol.
Okay once it's dry replace the print head carriage back in push the lever down install the ink cartridges. Close the lid then unplug the printer. Wait 5 seconds plug it back in then it will reboot and start its set up procedure kind of like whet you first bought the printer except you won't have to change any of your network or setup setting since they are saved in memory. Also be patient about the set up procedure it seemed very slow for me. Once it finishes you will be prompted to run the printer alignment process. Run the alignment process and you should be all good. If not at least you gave it a shot. If this doesn't work your going to have to pay $60 for a new printer head. Which is not that big of a deal but hey if you can fix it for free why not. If you do decide to buy a new printer head you might find deals online or ebay just make sure it's an Genuine HP print head. And lol use the Genuine HP ink cartridges. Finally make sure you print at least on colored page per month to make sure the ink doesn't clog up in the future.
Remember this suggestion is after you have run the HP clean ink cartridge procedure twice. Sometimes the clean procedure will correct the problem first. Also there is video I watched on YouTube about this just search for "Clean HP 6500 print head. Hope that helps
Once it's all dry just reinstall the printer head carriage

  • Does apple make a printer for iPad if not how dow I get it to work with a HP Officejet 6500A Plus printer?

Does Apple make a printer for the iPad and if not how do I get it to work with a HP Officejet 6500A Plus printer? Thanks

Apple don't make any printers, but there are a number of the printers that are AirPrint-enabled, which you should be able to print to just by the printer and the iPad being on the same wifi network - the models that support AirPrint are listed on this page (the page also includes a bit of troubleshooting at the bottom of it) and it includes :
    HP Officejet 6500A e-All-In-One E710a
    HP Officejet 6500A Plus e-All-In-One E710n
If your's isn't one of those then you could see if HPs own ePrint app works with it, or there are third-party printer apps such as PrintCentral Pro and Print n Share which might work it

This is a part of the larger MacBook Pro connectivity issue. There are several related threads dealing with the MBP's networking problems. If your unit is suffering from this type of difficulty, good luck ... (or a long ethernet cable)

  • How do i get the hp officejet pro 8600 premium to print from my ipad2 using airprint?

how do i get the hp officejet pro 8600 premium to print from my ipad2 using airprint? The iPad does not see the printer.

    Hi RiverBirch,
What brand and model is your router?
First, connect your printer to your router.
    1. From printer front panel, press Wireless>Wireless Settings>Wireless Setup Wizard and follow the onscreen instructions to successfully connect your printer with an IP address.
Secondly, connect your iPad to the same router.
    1. Connect your iPad to the Internet and download the free HP ePrint Home & Biz app from the apps store.
    2. Connect your iPad to the same network as the printer. Settings>Network.
    3. Use the new HP Home & Biz app to print and scan photos or docs from your iPad!
Alternatively, you can also perform Airprint on the iPad thru the wireless network from the Photos menu in your iPad.

  • How do I get an Office Jet 6500A to print on Card stock?

How do I get an Office Jet 6500A to print on card stock. It pushes the card stock through the printer but will not print and tells me I have not selected the right print media. There is no selection for card stock.  I have tried every selection.  I assume there are other media definitions that can be downloaded but they certainly are not apparent.  I have been doing this job on all my other HP printers for years.  Suddenly this printer balks.

    Hi,
Page #22 of the manual says (must be the same as photo paper ?):
To load cards and photo paper
    1. Lift the output tray.
    2. Slide the paper width guide out as far as possible.
    3. Insert the media print-side down along the right of the main tray. Make sure the media aligns with the right and back edges of the tray and does not exceed the line marking in the tray. If the photo paper has a tab along one edge, make sure the tab is pointing towards the front of the printer.
    4. Slide the media guides in the tray to adjust them for the media size that you have loaded.
    5. Lower the output tray.
    6. Pull out the tray extender.
And the manual is : h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c02519721.pdf

If there are no drivers then you are out of luck, unless you can find a generic driver that will work.

Ok, so you were talking about needing the update.  It's hard to say as it all depends upon if it came with the new firmware or not.  It is not really relevent, however, since it will update itself upon enabling Web Services.  This process takes only a few minutes.  There is no computer necessary for the firmware update as long as the printer has internet access (i.e. connected directly to a router via either ethernet or wireless).  Yes, with an ad hoc connection, you will be able to print from the iPad, but you would have to use its 3G connection as opposed to going through your router.  It can only support a single wifi connection also.  Go ahead and set up the printer and keep me posted as to what happens.
BTW - What is the issue with your PC that it cannot access the internet?
If I have solved your issue, please feel free to provide kudos and make sure you mark this thread as solution provided.

  • HP Officejet 6500A Plus will not maintain wireless connection reliably

For the HP EXPERTS on Expert Day, April 18, 2012:
B.L.A.T. (Bottom Line At Top):  We have an HP Officejet 6500A Plus purchased about 5 months ago.  We wanted to use it as a wireless-connected printer in another room besides our home office.  It is useless to us because it will not maintain its wireless connection, even sitting just a few feet from the router in the same room.  Except for numerous hours of troubleshooting, we have left it sitting powered up, but unused and idle, for almost the entire 5 months in our home office.  DURING ALL THAT IDLE TIME, IT HAS LOGGED OVER 3,200 DISCONNECTS, at a consistent rate of 24 disconnects every 24 hours, even though it ALWAYS reports that the wireless signal quality is “EXCELLENT” (all this is according to the Wireless Network Test Reports we’ve printed throughout the last 5 months).  So our question is, what is it that this printer is trying to do once an hour over a wireless connection that is causing these thousands of disconnects?  And how can we stop it?
NOTE!  Before you round up the usual suspects (namely our router and our PC firewalls) please note that we also bought an HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus ON THE SAME DAY as the Officejet 6500A Plus.  The 8600 was also installed with a wireless connection, and has worked without a single network issue for the entire 5 months.
NOW, FOR THE REST OF THE STORY…
WHO WE ARE:  My wife and I have worked on HP equipment for 33 years, starting in 1979 as corporate customers of HP when we worked for Exxon; then we both worked for HP directly for 17 years; and we’ve now used dozens of pieces of HP equipment in our home during the last 12 years in retirement.  We’re primarily software folks, so we’re not exactly experts in hardware and networking, but on the other hand, this ain’t our first rodeo either.
    OUR CONFIGURATION:
PC’s – All running Windows 7 x64 with all important patches applied and Norton Internet Security 2012:  HPE-270f and HP AIO 200-Quad, each with full 6500A and 8600A drivers installed on wireless connection.  These 2 PC’s themselves can connect either wirelessly or via Ethernet to our home network.  The 270f has a dual-band wireless board.  Both bands work.  We also have a new dv7t laptop with only the full 6500A driver installed via wireless connection.  The laptop is now upstairs and it’s connected to our home network wirelessly without any issues.  (This is where we had hoped to also put the 6500A, but it needs to work reliably via wireless connection.)
ROUTER:  Netgear N600 WNDR3700 providing Ethernet and wireless networking.  Router provides a very strong wireless signal throughout the house.  No wireless problems with any other equipment including an iPod, two Kindle Fires besides all the HP equipment.
PRINTERS:  Besides the two HP printers, the HPE-270f PC has a Canon MP960 installed on it.  And if we can’t get the 6500A working right or replaced with something that does work right, we may be buying our second Canon printer.  By the way, on the 6500A, ePrint and App’s are set to ON, but of course they’re not being used, just like everything else on this AIO.
OTHER:  We also have a Sonos music system that connects to our network via Ethernet and has its own proprietary mesh network (on another frequency) for transmitting ripped music wirelessly to speaker units throughout our house.  (If you aren’t familiar with this totally cool system, check out sonos.com).  We’ve never seen any evidence of interference between these two wireless networks, or our wireless phone sets either.
HP TOOLS AVAILABLE ON ALL 3 PC’s:  HPU
    UPDATE 5.003.001.001 (reporting everything up-to-date); HPHDU 3.1.0.17; HPPDU 5.0.0.015 and HPNDU 4.3.0.002.
SYMPTOMS:  The 6500A Plus installs quickly and easliy, and connects wirelessly just fine during installation.  But sometime over the next hour (usually less), it disconnects and won’t print from PC applications.  Sometimes the application puts up an “Unable to communicate with printer” screen, even though the PC usually thinks the printer is “ready”.  Other times, the PC thinks the printer is offline (but printers don’t have “offline” buttons anymore!).  Often, if you just leave everything alone, the 6500A will somehow reconnect and print out the spooled file 5-30 MINUTES later.  So it does usually seem to be able to recover given some time, but that doesn’t always fit our schedule!   Occasionally, turning the wireless radio on the printer off and back on will fix it right away.  But usually, you have to power the printer completely off, and then back on.  As far as we know, that always fixes it…..until the next disconnect a few minutes later!
PREVIOUSLY TRIED:  After reading some of HP’s wireless network support websites, I manually assigned a fixed IP address to this printer.  It didn’t seem to matter; according to the wireless network test report, it still logs disconnects at the rate of one per hour, and all the failure symptoms were the same.
We also dabbled a bit with setting this printer as “trusted” to the Firewall, but that didn’t seem to matter either.
Next, we connected the printer via Ethernet.  The printer immediately started to work, even though it had just been in its “failed” state over the wireless connection.  As far as we know, it never failed while connected via Ethernet.  This seems to point to a purely wireless hardware/firmware problem on the printer itself.
Late last year, I tried two different chat sessions about this with the inter-continental AIO support teams, each one lasting several hours.  Unfortunately, none of their optimistic solution scripts seemed to fit our problem.  They both seemed determined to reconfigure the 6500A as a TCP/IP printer, which of course worked fine initially, just like everything else.  At this point, they would understandably want to close the chat.  But 20-30 minutes later, we could no longer print to it.  During the second chat, they got into one of our PC’s remotely and effectively turned off the spooler (by selecting “Print Directly” or something like that).  After that, all was well again (as usual) UNTIL the printer disconnected, at which time attempting to print from that PC would HANG the application (since the spooler was no longer buffering) and eventually hang the whole PC.  One giant leap backwards.  That’s when I gave up on the multi-hour chat sessions.
The three diagnostic utilities (HDU, PDU, NDU) have been tried over and over.  When the printer is in its disconnected state, the DU’s usually don’t detect the 6500A at all, or if they do detect it, they are unable to fix anything.  Frankly, it’s easier to just power the printer off (which takes about a minute) and power the printer back on (which takes more than a minute) and then wait for the spooler to kick in (usually about 30 seconds).  BUT WE DON’T CONSIDER THAT A SOLUTION!!
B.L.A.B.  (Bottom Line At Bottom):  We have used up nearly the entire black ink cartridge and at least a ream of paper troubleshooting this brand new printer, to no avail.  This printer is useless to us unless it can maintain a wireless connection reliably.  Please help!
    Thanks –
    Bob and Jane

I bought the Officejet 6500A Plus about one month and have experienced the very same problem. I tried to remedy this problem following suggestions in a number of different posts (static IP, router, firewalls etc), all to no avail. Last week I called support. The support I received by the tech over several hours and different days for a week was very good. However none of his suggestions corrected the connection issue. After today's recommended fix failed, he advised HP is aware of this issue with the 6500 and other affected printers. He claimed HP was working on a firmware upgrade. He did not know when the update would be provided. The tech also claimed HP acknowledged this problem in a written announcement. He agreed to email the announcement to me. I haven't received it. This has been the only problem I've had with the 6500

  • HP Officejet 6500A Plus not staying connected to wireless network

Just picked up a HP Officejet 6500A Plus e-All-in-One Printer - E710n the other week and set it all up and it was working wonderfully. But I noticed after it goes into sleep mode it disconnects from the wireless network and doesn't reconnect.
I will get a overview of how I have it all set up.
I have a DSL modem with a TRENDnet TEW-639GR router connected to it. I have set my router to reserve IP addresses for the computer and printer. That way I can leave the computer and printer wireless IP settings as automatic and they will always get the same IP address. I do this for the wireless network at my parents place as well and it works perfectly with their HP Photosmart C7280.
I also set up the HP ePrintCenter feature on the printer so that I can print by sending the printer an email. When I first set it all up this was working great. I tested it all and it was awesome. When I would log onto the ePrint website it would show as connected and it was all good.
So then what happened was it was all fine then the next day when we want to print something the computer says the printer is offline. I go on the HP ePrintCenter website and it says not connected. I print out a wireless network report page and it says not connected. After I printed that test page, I guess it woke up the printer enough or something as it then connected to the router and printed fine as well as showed up as connected on the ePrintCenter website. So all was good. Then the next day the printer goes to sleep and again it shows as disconnected.
Should it not be staying connected in sleep mode? How will the printer know something is being sent to it and that it should wake up if it is not staying connected?
Any suggestions of what I should change with the settings? I suppose I could try setting the IP settings as static on the printer itself but I shouldn't need to as I set it to static on the router. When it finally does reconnect it does always keep the same IP. If that is what is required I guess I could do that but then what is the point in having an automatic setting if it doesn't work? I would rather have this issue fixed that have to do a work around for it.
    Thanks in advance!

    Hi,
The printer should stay connected to your wireless network after the printer enters the sleep mode.
This is not an expected behavior.
I believe such an issue may be caused due to a signal quality or any conflict as too many broadcust on the same channel.
Please try the following steps in order to better understand the issue:
Follow the Wireless Setup Wizard if your printer currently disconnected
    Enter the Setup menu.
    Enter the Network menu.
    Click Wireless.
    Click Wireless Test Report.
What is the signal quality provided by the report and what channel used to broadcast by your router?
If you may scan and attach the report, it may help to better understand any possible cause.

    Shlomi
