How do I get to the itunes screen on a disabled iphone 4

I realize there is a great tutorial page out there and archived, on how to restore a disabled phone.
HOWEVER, it's not working for me so I'm seeking more information, rather than a look over there where your answer has been logged a number of times. (frankly that's just rude by the way)
When I go through the process of unplugging the phone, holding down the home button it did connect to iTunes. The download for the update started and now it won't connect back to iTunes because it requires the passcode.
I have the passcode.
What I don't have, or cannot figure out, is how to get to a screen ON the phone to enter it in.
Slide to unlock takes me to a dial an emergency call dial pad.
Any help will be appreciated.

Then you didn't do it right. You need to force it into recovery mode or DFU mode and restore the phone.
Try it again:
If you have Find My iPhone enabled, you can use Remote Wipe to erase the contents of your device. If you have been using iCloud to back up, you may be able to restore the most recent backup to reset the passcode after the device has been erased.
Alternatively, place the device in recovery mode and restore it to erase the device:
Disconnect the USB cable from the device, but leave the other end of the cable connected to your computer's USB port.
Turn off the device: Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button for a few seconds until the red slider appears, then slide the slider. Wait for the device to shut down.
While pressing and holding the Home button, reconnect the USB cable to the device. The device should turn on.
Continue holding the Home button until you see the Connect to iTunes screen.
iTunes will alert you that it has detected a device in recovery mode. Click OK, and then restore the device.

It is all or nothing.
You should be syncing contact with your computer regularly, so they should be in whatever program you have chosen to sync.
You should be importing all pics regularly, so they should be on your computer as well.

yes, thanks. I needed to reset using the power button and home button and hold for longer than i thought. After some serious worry (I'm an electronic illiterate!) I do have everything working and synced with my laptop and phone.

Iphone are meant to be sync to one itunes library only.
You can copy those songs to a cd and then put a copy to your itunes media library.

That;s really not enough free space... you can use a tools such as OmniDiskSweeper to find out where your large files reside and begin pruning (or copying to an external if they're files that you want to keep).
One thing is certain - if you're going to continue your current usage you're certainly going to need to install a larger boot drive.

Unless it is a 3rd party cord, there is no cord that just goes from the phone to the wall. However, you will need a cord that connects to the computer and the phone. When I start my iMac I see a message that my start up disk is full and that I need to delete files. After I type in my user name and password, all I see if a white screen. This problem started today. This usually happens because iCloud only keeps photo stream photos for 30 days (even though your last 1000 photos will remain on your phone until deleted). When you enabled photo stream on your Mac you only received photo stream photos from the last 30 days.
To get older photos to your Mac, create a shared photo stream containing them and invite yourself as a subscriber (see http://help.apple.com/icloud/#mmc0cd7e99). The be sure you check Shared Photo Streams in iPhoto>Preferences>Photo Stream. You can then import them to your iPhoto library by opening the shared photo stream album in iPhoto, then going to Edit>Select All, Control-clicking on any of the selected photos and selecting Import.
