How do I identify what is using up all my disc space?
Hi,
I am about to run out of harddrive space, and am trying to identify where I am using up all my capacity.
Is there a good utility that I can use to identify candidate files to move over to an external harddrive? Or if not a utility, what do folks in the forum use to keep their 500G drive as clean as possible?
Thanks,
--Brian
Try OmniDiskSweeper, WhatSize, or Grand Perspective - CNet Downloads or MacUpdate.

How do I identify what is using a color within a document?
I am working with two other "designers" and am having to set up complicated art files for press. The "add all used color options" brings up several swatches that are being used within the documents. Unfortunately neither one of these designers are print savvy and have used multiple builds of the same color and some are PMS spot; some are CMYK spot; some are CMYK process; some are RGB and still others are LAB. Its a mess. I need to identify what objects/type are using a particular color so I can correct for press. There is a great option for this in InDesign but how do I do this in Illustrator?
Window >> Seperations Preview
Turn on Overprint Preview
Then option click on a color's eyeball to solo that color only, repeat option click on same eyeball to show all again
CMYK works as a group with the option click, so you can solo and show only what is in 4/c or spot easily
One of he best interfaces Adobe put together from a usability standpoint. -

How do i check what's taking up all of my space on the macbook air?
Hi,
I've only just got the macbook air 2012 with 64gb of space and now it seems that i have run out of space..Apparently i'm using 54gb and i just can't see how thats possible, because i've only download atleast 2 apps and got iphoto and imovie.
Also i haven't got mavericks because i don't think i have enough and i just don't see how i've run out already?? How can i check how much i have left and whats taking up all the space?Hi DanZeMan,
Click on the Apple in the upper left-hand corner, then on About This Mac>More Info, then on the top of that window, click on Storage. It will show you a graphic indicating what is taking up your storage:
Cheers,

What's using up all my HD space? Ghosts?
My HD storage space seems to be all used up. Yet when I tally it up manually the numbers don't add up. It seems like there is a large amount of space being used up but it is not accounted for. I'm not talkin about a few MBs, but it seems to actually be about 4-5 missing GBs!
I should first mention that I use Azureus to download torrents of TV programs on a daily basis because I live in Japan and this is the only way I can watch all my favorite shows save for asking friends and family to tape everything and send it to me.
On average I d/l and watch about 1GB worth of video each day. After I watch something I then trash it. I've been doing this since the new year started and at that point I had about 8GB of free space to play with. Today, after deleting all files I've watched I seem to have only 2.5GBs left, eventhough I haven't d/led or installed anything else. So...what's taking up this space? Any ideas? Anyone experience something similar to this?
Please help me.
EDIT:
My HD: 27.82 capacity
Used on HD:
Apps:910MB
Library:1.62GB
System:1.02GB
Users:14.27GB
Remaining:2.58GB
If you do the math I should have at least 10GB remaining, why is it only 2.58GB? Where are the other 7.42GBs at???I rebooted and only got a few extra 100 MBs back. I did notice however that my ~User/Library/Logs/Crash Reporter folder is storing 1.07 GBs of crash Logs! Isn't that a little crazy? Is it OK to erase those Logs?
Anyways, I'm going to try out the programs recommended above. Thanks for the help and I'll post back with how things are going^^!
EDIT: Ok I used WhatSize...
When I started it it gave me these numbers:
Capacity: 27.8GB
Used:25.2GB
Available:2.55GB
Then it measured my HD and gave me this number:
18.2GB on HD....so apparently there are 7 phantom GBs on my HD that neither myself nor WhatSize can account for. That's a whole lotta space that'd be nice to have, lol. -
I have very little space left on the hard drive on my macbook, on my storage report it says "other" is taking up more than two thirds of the space on the hardrive. How can I identify what these files are?
Hello,
There is free software you can download that gives you a graphical image of what files are used on your hard drive. http://www.derlien.com/
This may help you clean down your hard drive for more space.
Best of luck -
Hi, In "disk space," how do I identify what "other" is?
Hi,
In "disk space," how do I identify what "other" is?
I want to free up disk space, and I've already backed up with an external hard drive, and moved files around. I still have over 60gbs of "other" to tend to, and I'm not sure where to start.
I appreciate any help!"Other" is everything that is not audio, movies, photos, apps, and backups. It includes your email messages and attachments, all your documents, downloads, and OS X itself.
To learn how to reclaim disk space used by "other" read: OS X: Increase disk space -
How do i identify what devices are connected to 101, 102, etc on my air port extreme?
Depending on whether a device is connecting using Ethernet or wireless, you need to know the Ethernet ID or AirPort ID of the device. That is the number that is associated with the IP address that is displayed in AirPort Utility.
For example, if you have a Mac....
Open System Preferences (gear icon on the dock) and open Network
Click on AirPort , then click Advanced at the lower right
The AirPort ID of the Mac is displayed at the bottom of the window
For the Ethernet ID, click on Ethernet, then click Advanced, then click the Ethernet tab
The Ethernet ID is displayed at the top of the window
On an iPhone.....
Tap the Settings icon, tap General, tap About, then scan down to locate Wi-Fi Address, also known as the AirPort ID. -

How do I find what's using my hard drive space
My wife has a 14" iBook. How do I find what's using all the hard-drive space? It only has a 40GB hard-drive (it's one of the older G3 models) but there isn't a lot loaded onto the HD. There is only 3GB space left. I've gone through every application and utility and document and every folder (document, movie, etc.) and the largest space-hogging folder is iTunes which uses 15GB because of the music. I can't find any singular folder that uses any sizeable HD space. I recently loaded Tiger so I don't know if Tiger uses the rest of the space or if it's just a combo of all the other applications.
You could download and use WhatSize to see what may be eating up the space.
With a 40 GB hard drive, you need to keep at least 6 GB free in order to avoid problems. -
How do I find what is using up so much space on my 750 gig harddrive
how do I find out what is using so much of my space on my 750 gig hard drive. i know my pictures take up 147 gigs but I can' figure out how to check other things
When I did that, I could still only see the same contents as shown in the third screenshot above. However, minutes after doing the "Show package contents", iMovie seems to have figured out that it didn't have 15GB of data in its library after all and updated its size accordingly. So, problem solved for now but I still find iMovie to be painful to use and I will probably avoid doing so as much as I can.

OmniDiskSweeper (free) - http://www.omnigroup.com/applications/omnidisksweeper/download/
Archive files onto other media until your hard drive has at least 10% of its total size free, or at least 15+ GB at all times.
