How do I import MXF files to final cut?

I'm trying to import mxf files from avid workflow to cut in Final Cut Pro 7. Any suggestions?

You ONLY have the Avid MXF files?  You'll need this:

at the end, you say "import preferences", which program are you describing?
So im safer using footage that is remotely being pulled from iphoto...
    vs
using footage that is imported into FCP from imovie?
Is there anything i can do in fcp to make this footage more reliable or safer or more stable as i pull remotely from iphoto?

  • How to import MXF files to Final Cut Pro with smooth editing

Summary: Follow this tutorial to learn how to import and edit MXF files in Final Cut Pro by converting MTS to FCP native format.
If you have a Panasonic P2, Canon XF or Sony XDCAM series camcorder,
you may be familiar with Material eXchange Format (MXF). Though MXF is a
great video format to record high-definition videos, it is not easy to
use in that they are not natively supported by most NLE systems like
Final Cut Pro. In order to import MXF to FCP for editing, the easy workaround is to transcode MXF files to FCP compatible video formats.
Along with some help from a top MXF Converter, it can be done. To
help those who wanna edit MXF files in FCP without problems, here I
share with you a simple guide on how to convert MXF files to edit in
Final Cut Pro 6/7 or FCP X.
First of all, downloading the App- Brorsoft MXF Converter for Mac
Overall, the program is a professional yet easy-to-use MXF Converter
on Mac (Mavericks included) which can not only convert XF100, Canon
C300, XF105 and XF305, Panasonic P2 recorded MXF files, but also provide
simple video editing functions for you. The MXF to FCP Converter not
only can convert MXF to ProRes for FCP, but also can transcode MXF
videos for editing in Avid MC, Adobe Premiere Pro, iMovie, FCE, etc.
Just download it and follow the tutorial below to get the work done.
Transcoding (P2) MXF files to ProRes for Final Cut Pro 6/7/X
    1. Import MXF files to the converter
Launch the best MXF to FCP Converter, and then click the “add files” button to browse and import MXF videos from your camcorder or hard drive.
    2. Select FCP editable format
Click the Format bar, and move mouse cursor to choose “Final Cut Pro > Apple ProRes 422 (*.mov)” as output format.
    Tips:
    a. Settings- click to set video
    resolution(1920×1080/1440×1080/1280×720/720×480), bitrate (from 1Mbps to
    20Mbps), frame rate (24p/30p)
    b. Editor (next to “Add” icon)- click to set deinterlace, trim, crop, add effect, attach subtitles, etc
    3. Start transcoding MXF video to FCP
Click “Convert” button to start converting MXF files to Apple ProRes
MOV for FCP 6/7/X under Mac OS. Once the MXF to ProRes 422 conversion
is done, you can transfer MXF footage into Final Cut Pro (X) for editing
    smoothly on Mac with ease.

You may refer to this step by step guide on how to convert MXF to Final Cut Pro more supported Apple ProRes or DV at http://www.idealshare.net/imovie-fcp/mxf-final-cut-pro.html
It also applies to convert MXF to other video or audio format. It even applies to convert other videos like AVCHD, MOD, TOD, AVI, and MPEG etc to FCP format.

Directly or XDCAM transfer depending on camera according to this:

If it doesn't work, I'd ask the question on Final Cut Pro forum, being sure to mention which version of Final Cut Pro you are using.

  • Can not import MXF files into Final Cut Pro

I am full of anger and frustration!!! I purchased final cut pro only to find out that it WILL NOT import MXF files. How insane is that? ADOBE - NO PROBLEM. Then I had to go back to YOUR STORE and buy two different file converter applications before I found one that worked. Now FINAL CUT PRO will only import the audio segment of converted files after converting to PRORES in PAVTUBE. Are you BUCKING kidding me? This work flow BLOWS. Why the FELL does this have to be sooooo hard!  I am gone to creative cow and other forums to try to find out why I am sooo stupid that I can't get this simple process sorted out. YOU BUCKING MONEY MACHINE! How many more aps will I have to buy before I can edit CANON XF100 files in Final Cut Pro. BUCK politics! You should make your software with plugins that would allow you to edit without this kind of added step. JUST LIKE ADOBE. I want refunds for my final cut pro purchase. This is BUCKING rediculous. What a waste of time!

There is definite upside to dragging one's feet on upgrades until necessary and this is a prime example. On a desktop running 10.6, and the XF Utility, FCP 7 L&T works reliably. And like you, that's my workflow for FCPX projects. Running 10,7 on a laptop, the EOS plug-in works well for FCPX imports – no workarounds needed. When I finally get around to updating, I will partition the HD, with one SL partition and the other partition with a later OS. Of course this strategy will work only as long as my hardware holds up.

  • How do I import mkv files to Final Cut Pro

Sorry if this has been asked before.  I searched and didn't find a ton of specific information on this.
I am trying to work with some large HD .mkv files.  These are 1080p videos.  I have tried using Mpeg Streamclip with several settings such as ProRes 422, Mpeg4, and AIC.  In all instances my import to FCP (v6.0.6) have been problematic.  The biggest issue I have had is that I end up with sound synch issues or my 5.1 sound is dropped to 2 channel.
The only success I have had so far has been to use Handbrake to convert the .mkv files down to 720p (resulting in a .m4v file that isn't compatible with FCP), then convert again in Mpeg Streamclip to AIC (which FCP can handle).  This resulted in an editable file format that FCP handled with no sound synch issues but I lost the 5.1 sound which is a real bummer.
Can anyone please provide me with some suggestions and a better work flow.  My end goal is to be able to edit the footage and export to a 720p mass compatible format like .mp4.  I really want to retain the 5.1 sound as well.
    Thanks.

Never heard of .mkv myself but you may need to upgrade to Final Cut Studio 3, which you can't do any longer.

  • How do you import mpeg2 files into final cut express?

I have recently show my sons christening, and relied on a friend to do ths shooting. One of the tapes unfortunatley has broken, and I have had a second party transfer this footage onto DVD for me. He is also sending the footage through as an MPEG 2 file. Is there anything I can do with this using FCPE?

Convert the DVD's VOB files into a format that works natively in FCE.  For DVD footage (which is SD), use MPEG Streamclip to do the converting.  Here's a tutorial on using MPEG Streamclip: http://www.secondchairvideo.com/?p=739
MPEG Streamclip is freeware, but you may need to purchase the QuickTime MPEG-2 Playback Component from Apple if you don't have it already.

  • Importing AVI files into Final cut creates a pop

How can I stop getting a popping sound when I import AVI files into Final Cut. I figured it must be the type of file itself but I cant seem to find a free converter to convert my AVIs into what ever is need (which is what? .mov files?)
    Please help

The very basics of non-linear editing is to know what video and audio codecs your particular NLE works with natively. FCP works with many video codecs but only a few audio codecs. Typically it works best with AIFF at 48khz, 16 bit.
You can find out all the various native codecs and formats in the User's Manual, Help Files or by looking through the Easy Setup list.
FWIW, both AVI and MOV are not really codecs at all; they are both merely containers that could contain video and audio made from any number of codecs. So saying you have an AVI file or a MOV file is kind of like saying you have a car ... it doesn't really tell anyone much at all.
Both QuickTime Pro and Compressor (which you most likely already have installed) should be able to convert to a native codec for use in FCP.

Animation. How do I import still images in final cut pro x (from dragon frame) duration 3 frames pr. image? We have allready tried to set stillimages duration in preferences to 0,08 sek, but it does not have any effect!

You can drag your images to the timeline, select all, ctrl-d and set the duration to 3 frames by typing 3 and enter.
Or you can use Quicktime 7 to "open image sequence", select the desired duration, export your animation to quicktime and import that into FCP X for further editing.

  • Retrieving imported AVCHD files from Final Cut Pro X

Hi there, does anyone know how to retrieve raw AVCHD clips from Final Cut Pro X, after they have been imported? I shot some footage on my GH2 and it DID import from the camera into FCP X, but it's not running smooth at all. I heard that it's better to convert the files into pro res first, but I wanted to see if it worked. It does work, but not very well. So now I want to find the original video files I imported and convert them into pro res and then import again. Anyone had experience with this?

I think it all comes back to work flow. The whole reason I have opted to convert the original files to pro res is because it is choppy in the timeline when I'm editing. It seems it's true that FCP X really prefers to work with 'optimized media'...or Pro Res instead of reformatted versions of AVCHD. I would like to work with this original format, mainl because the footage isn't as compressed and hasn't lost a generation...and look absolutely pure and gorgeous in high bit rate from my GH2, however, what choice do I have but to convert to Pro Res if I am unable to edit smoothly? I think Ian had the right idea when he said to compare the footage of both, but again, if I can't even edit in AVCHD then what's the point? I think Apple needs to rectify this in the next update as I'm sure there are so many users out there who would prefer editing in this original format. Is there a noticeable loss of quality, that's what I am curious about.

  • Importing video files into final cut express

I am a pro tools engineer and have just dove into final cut express 4.0 to do some simple video editing.I have a cannon camera with a sd card.I archived the video to a hard drive so I could free up the card.I can not find a single piece of evidence that explains how I can import those files from my hard drive.Everything that is mentioned is comming from a camera.I also tried by the book importing a Imovie to start simple. No luck.It shows up in the directory but there is no video.Needless to say I am lost!!!!

If you still have the original video on the memory card, put it back in the camcorder. (Don't try to copy it back from your Mac to the card, however.) Connect the camcorder to your Mac via USB and try capturing the video via FCE's Log & Transfer function.
In most cases when people merely copy video files from a camcorder's memory stick or hard drive (usually AVCHD video) to the Mac desktop or a folder, they don't copy the full directory structure on the card, which is essential. Is that what you did when you 'archived' the video? Can you provide more specific info?

  • How to work with .XML files with FINAL CUT PRO HD

Ok so I am a newby, kind of. We filmed a feature using the SONY XDCAM 350. uses the optical 23.3GB disc. I used the camera to copy all the HD files ( .XML ) to an 1TB external drive. Now the drive is readable, everything looks fine, when I select a .XML file. Final Cut Pro HD opens, but then asks to choose a TRANSLATION file. Where do I go from here. I do not understand that command of action it is asking. Newby here, so pity me for awhile.
    Thanks

my instinct is "No" but thats no (because the app is expecting th efiles to be located on an mounted XDCAM disc that is formated as such) ... but in your situation I'd be inclined to download the XDCAM Transfer app and try for myself
what you may need to do though is get hold of the discs and a deck and import using the method above
failing that you have the option of using Flip4Mac's MXF quicktime components ... not cheap.
this will allow you to select the local XDCAM source media that you've alreday transfered in the native MXF format, and rewrap as Quicktime for editing in FCP
(a trial version is available for download)
... and if thats out of budget, or for whatever reason not an option, you can sit it out and see if the next FCP revision helps you out any with its direct Log and Transfer support for XDCAM. may have the same restrictions though (ie need a properly attached formatted device)
... and other than that, you're looking at switching to an NLE with native MXF support (Avid, Edius, Vegas etc)
