How do I investigate and solve Pages, Notes, Mail intermittent 'offline' and failure to synchronise problems with Mountain Lion after waking from Sleep

When I wake up my iMac after sleep, i get a variety of intermittent - but mostly FREQUENT and FRUSTRATING problems including:
Notes app is offline - as stated by a message in the window bar. If I close Notes and reopen, the app appears to be online. However, Notes does NOT update with items I know are on my iPad or in the web iCloud. Furthermore, if I create a new note on my iMac, the new Note does not upload to iCloud. This is IRRITATING!
Pages and Numbers - similar situation. I can edit a Pages or Numbers document on my iMac (stored on the iCloud). But then the Pages doc doesn't ALWAYS get uploaded to the iCloud. Then I end up with conflicted versions of the file in the cloud, my iPad, and the two iMacs I use. Then I get CONFUSED and FRUSTRATED. For example, consider these steps:
Open Pages on my iMac, edit an iCloud file, then save and close file
Pages/File/Open/iCloud - I note in the iCloud file list the edited file has a little 'cloud' icon against its name. From experience this warns me of TROUBLE - namely that the file has NOT yet been uploaded to the iCloud. However, I just checked the new Beta iCloud on the web, and to my surprise, the file edited on my iMac is apparently in the icloud. But now, I edit the iCloud version, and the changes DO NOT appear on my iMac pages version. OK I realise its in Beta version...
So now, I open my iPad, open Pages. I note the iCloud version of my edited document updates to my iPad, as indicated by a blue download line. 'It just works' as Steve Jobs claimed at Apple Developers Conference a couple of years back. Again, the edited version form my iPad is now 'up in the cloud' correctly....
Oh - and now mysteriously the Pages version on my Imac has become synchronised with my iPad/iCloud version! Luck ... but that's about all I can say. It doesn't always happen. I'm LUCKY today.
Meanwhile, the Note I created on my iMac (Item 1 above) has still not yet appeared on my iPad or iCloud... even though I HOPE it would be given that Pages on my iMac, iPad and iCloud are chatting nicely now! The Note says it's in my iCloud - but  NOT. Similarly, notes updated or added on my iPad, which appear in iCloud, are NOT on my iMac.
Mail - last but NOT LEAST! and MOST INFURIATING!!! My Gmail, Vodafone NZ and Orcon accounts (in Mail) are all active and receiving after the night's sleep. However, my iCloud mail account has the dreaded offline.
The message on Mail is "There may be a problem with the mail server or network. Verify the settings for account “ICloud - [email protected]” or try again. The server returned the error: The server “p03-imap.mail.me.com” cannot be contacted on port 993." Despite the message, mail was received this morning at 8:59 am ... some time before I woke-up my computer (a late start this morning).
If I sent an email FROM my .me iCloud account TO my Vodafone account, the message whooshes away, it's in my SENT box. But it doesn't get delivered to my Vodafone account on my iMac Mail, or anywhere else, Despite the message being listed in my 'Sent' mailbox!!!
In contrast, a message sent from my Gmail account to my Vodafone account (in Mail) gets sent and received almost instantly on  my iMac and iPad.
All of the above mishaps are extremely frustrating, as I rush off from working on my iMac at home, get to my iMac at work and find documents I have been updating on my home iMac not available correctly on my work iMac ... or even my iPad. I expect these things from Apple to 'just work'. Furthermore, emails I THINK I have sent (as indicated by them appearing in the Sent folder on my home iMac) ... have not actually been despatched.
Frankly, I can no longer rely or recommend the Apple iCloud stuff, so I am converting more and more to relying on DropBox and Google.
These problems only became apparent since I updated to one of the Mountain Lion versions... I can't say when.
Oh - if I shutdown and restart the computer my Mail works OK. Guess what, I don't want to do that each time I want to use Mail!
Technicals:
My iMac is connected by Ethernet cable to my Apple TimeCapsule. The TimeCapsule is connected by Ethernet cable to my Orcon Genius Modem.
Obviously, my internet connection is A-OK, as I am able to use Firefox to make this posting!
Mountain Lion 10.8.4
iMac 27 inch, mid 2010, Intel Core i5 16 Gb

I've returned to my sleeping iMac after a few days away. Tis time, ALL MAIL accoiunts are offline. I will follow you next set of instructions. In the meantime, here is the DETAIL from MAIL CONNECTION DOCTOR:

I still don't know what happened to my test Aperture Library after the update to 3.4...Not only were my previews lost, but so were the original images!  Needless to say, I haven't bothered to update the main library on the Mac Pro because I don't want to deal with this level of uncertainty (even with backups in place).

I  spend good money for my iPhone i have the iPhone 5 with the new charger slot which is smaller. I have been through at least 3 charging cords and this is not acceptable to me. i never had a problem with this on my older phone. apple needs to correct this and reimburse me for this cord.

Charging cords are covered by the iPhone warranty or their own warranty
if puchased separately. Take your iPhone and the cords to your local
Apple store for evaluation and possible replacement.

Same here on an older iMac since Lion. Thanks for the uncheck wake for network access tip though, it doesn't do it either in that case, I will leave it that way.

at least that the operator has confirmed to me that he called me. I also have problems with either the start of the mac with the power off. I can not understand if it crashes or is just very very slow.
Finally, I have a problem with the external hard disck. I often said to have been ejected incorrectly (not true) and I start to restore the startup recovery disk because disk utility is ineffective from the normal operating system .. is a shocking thing, but how you reduced. in four years it had never happened. seem to have windows or worse. Wake up.
I am an Italian, alas, and then I would like an answer to my language because my € are the same as German French or English.

You are on Windows 2000, you do not have a "Firefox" button, and should consider yourself to be fortunate in that you still have menus and don't have to do anything to get the menus back instead of the "Firefox" button. (The same applies to Windows XP users).
Use the "File" menu to get to Import. You are not on Windows 7 or Vista, and don't have to put up with the nonsense added for Aero.
If you want the "Firefox" button you can get it with View -> toolbars -> (uncheck) Menu Bar. The menu bar and the "Firefox" button were supposed to be mutually exclusive (which is impossible in some cases without being incompatible).
Once you are using the "Firefox" button ...
Use the "Alt" key to view the menu bar (temporarily) containing File, Edit, View, History, Bookmarks, Tools, and Help. On Windows 7 and Vista, the menu bar was hidden by default in Firefox 4 and above. These menu items are more or less available under the "Firefox" button which has the most used of the built-in Firefox menu items available in a different format.
To get back to having menus again. "Firefox" button -> Options (second column) -> (check) Menu Bar
You can make '''Firefox 7.0.1''' look like Firefox 3.6.*, see numbered '''items 1-10''' in the following topic [http://dmcritchie.mvps.org/firefox/firefox-problems.htm#fx4interface Fix Firefox 4.0 toolbar user interface, problems (Make Firefox 4.0 thru 8.0, look like 3.6)]. • Display will not sleep any more after waking from sleep

My Macbook has recently started misbehaving after waking from sleep. Started putting the entire MB to sleep each night by closing the lid. When I wake it in the morning everything seems normal, no error messages. However from that point forward the display will not dim or sleep. I've tried re-applying my settings in System Preferences -> Energy Saver. Pretty much the only fix has been to reboot, which is annoying and Windows-like.
In the interest of full disclosure, I have "fast sleep" enabled (aka hibernation mode disabled) but I've had that since I bought my MB with 10.5.1 on it. So I don't think it's related. In fact I changed to the default Energy Saver profile to see if that fixed the problem (it didn't), which re-enabled hibernation mode and I then had to re-disable hibernation.
I want to say this started happening after the 10.5.4 update, but that may have been a coincidence as to when I started sleeping it each night... I don't exactly remember.
I downloaded Cocktail to run all the cron jobs, etc, that don't get run when sleeping at night, and that didn't help either.
Any suggestions? Anyone else ever see this? Seeing it now?
    Thanks!

This is still an issue for me.
I sleep my Macbook every night by closing the lid. After doing this a few times, the display either stops sleeping, or stops locking. I have the lock menu in the Apple menu bar, and even selecting "Lock screen" will not work.
Sometimes a reboot fixes it, sometimes I have to reset the SMC.
    Any info out there?

    Hello Santiago,
    the link doesn't work anymore...
    So i'm just guessing:
    • did you check your memory? Might be a failure in a module.
    • you should update youre drivers. Use the system update tool.
    • did you try a recovery or new installation of your system? if the BSOD still occurs, there really might be a hardware failure... do you still have warranty?

  • How to get Leopard to stop asking for password after waking from sleep mode

My regular userid does not have a password. When I boot the system, it goes directly in without asking for password. However, when Mac wakes from sleep, it asks for password. I just press enter.
Can I do something to make Mac skip over request for password when waking from sleep?
    Thanks.
(The Mac is sleeping, not me.)

Open the Security pane of System Preferences and turn that option off.

I've just migrated all my files, applications from an imac with lion to a new imac with mountain lion. When I started up Word I had a request to put in my product key which I did successfully. Word then worked fine. Then I clicked on update and the request to enter my product key came up again. This time when I entered the key it was not accepted so I can't use Word or any other part of Microsoft Office:Mac 2011 (Home and Student).
Can anyone help please. many thanks in advance

  • External keyboard and mouse not recognized after waking from sleep

This started happening all of a sudden. It was working fine before that. When I disconnect the power cable, keyboard, and then connect them back, its not recognized. To make it recognize the keyboard and mouse, I have to logout and login or restart the laptop. I looked at this related post, but the PRAM reset fix did not work for me : http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=870482
Any idea how to fix it?
    OS version: 10.9.2
    MacBook Pro 13-inch Mid 2012
Processor 2.9 GHz Intrel Core i7
    Memory 16GB 1600 MHz DDR3

I have a similar problem on our G3 iBook with Panther. Most of the keys don't work, and of the four or five that do, they print only gibberish.
For a while I had control of the "C" key, and I was able to start from the Installation CD-ROM. I ran Disk Utility. It found and repaired a whole bunch of permissions and reported no problem with the hard disk. But I still cannot use the keys, and since then I've lost the use of the "C" also.
Because I cannot use the keyboard, I cannot type in my administrator's password, and for that reason I cannot use System Preferences to start from the Installation CD-ROM. I did not see the Hardware Test on the CD-ROM, but it sounds interesting.
Any ideas on how to get back to the CD-ROM when my keyboard doesn't work?

  • How can I add a Google account not connected to a GMail account to Messages in OSX Mountain Lion?

With iGoogle going offline soon, and being myself averse to using Google+ for social networking due to what I perceive as a blatant disregard for my privacy, I'm trying to save my few Gchat contacts, as I don't have many other ways to contact these specific people. However, I'm having trouble connecting my Gchat (or Google Talk if you prefer the term) to Messages. It doesn't recognize that my google account is tied to a verizon email address, not a gmail address, and refuses to acknowledge my password as correct (even though I typed it correctly at least five times trying).
I haven't seen anyone else having this problem, and I'd prefer to call customer support about this, but this seems to be the next best option.

    Hi,
iChat and Messages (and for that matter any other Jabber capable App) will not accept non Google Mail Google IDs as Google Talk IDs
When Google launched Google Talk it was only for those IDs issued under @googlemail.com or @gmail.com that were eligible.
Later they allowed other Google IDs to Chat but only from Web Browser Logins.
There was a period when they did seem to expand the non Googlemail IDs into the GoogleTalk fold for external apps to also allow access but this was dropped after a while.

  • Bluetooth is not ready after waking from sleep on Windows 7

After upgrading my Tecra M10 from Windows Vista x64 Enterprise to Windows 7 x64 Enterprise, sometimes, when I wake the laptop from sleep, Bluetooth is not ready.
Hibernating doesn't solve the problem, it needs a reboot which is a problem for me beacuse I usually have lots of applications open.
When this happens, the only Bluetooth devices on Device Manager are:
    * Bluetooth RFCOMM
    * Bluetooth USB Controller-5 from TOSHIBA
When all is working well, the Bluetooth devices on Device Manager are:
    * Bluetooth RFBUS
    * Bluetooth RFCOMM
    * Bluetooth RFHID
    * Bluetooth USB Controller-5 from TOSHIBA
How can I restart Bluetooth without having to restart the whole system? Turning wireless communications on and off on the side silder doesn't work.
    Thanks,
    Paulo Morgado

    Hi,
I have a *two week old X500-10T* From day one I have had a number of issues, working with the Toshiba Technical support I have had to disable hibernation for mains power and battery use. My screen went to sleep and just could not wake it up without doing a reset procedure including the removal of the battery etc.
I have been told to look out for another updated BIOS that should solve this issue. I already have a later BIOS on my laptop than the ones the Toshiba Tec support have.
Having sorted that (not really) I also have an issue with my Bluetooth and mouse. It seems to work till you leave it for about two hours, then the icon in the task bar goes ??RED?? and you can??t in any way get it to connect again. By doing a reboot it mostly comes back into action but not always. I have to fiddle about with switching on and off from the Bluetooth manager till it comes back to life.
Again with the great support from the Toshiba Technical support (TTS) we tried almost everything, loading the latest stack, going back to a restore point before the installation of the Windows update etc etc, but nothing solved the issue.
Again TTS suggested I keep an eye out for a BIOS update. My previous Toshiba has worked well for many years and I am sure Toshiba will eventually come up with the cause. Very disappointing, but I am keeping my fingers crossed for a satisfactory solution (shortly I hope)
I hope this helps some other X500-10 users.

  • Problems with Mountain Lion – Dock has gone and also clicking trackpad no longer works.

    Hi,
I’m not sure how best to explain the problem I am having but here goes anyway…I have a Macbook pro (mid 2009 model) and recently upgraded from Snow Leopard to Mountain Lion.  Everything seemed to be working ok and I was enjoying trying to work out all the new features. However yesterday when I switched the Macbook on, once it had started some strange things were happening. Firstly my dock at the bottom had disappeared. Normally this is at the bottom of the screen however this no longer the case. I used the keyboard shortcut to show the dock however when I do this, the dock appears but none of the icons increase in size when I hover over them (as used to happen).
The other thing that is happening is that I cannot click on anything to open or select an option. For example, I can’t click on anything on the dock (when I can get the dock to show) to open an application, I cannot select from drop down lists etc (ie select file then software updates). Even when I switch off my Macbook I can only hit return for the shutdown mode, and cannot select one of the other options, for example restart.  I tried to re-install Mountain Lion by holding down command and R (I think  - I read this on another forum and followed the instructions) however when the Macbook restarted and the various options came up, one of which is to re-install the software, I couldn’t select anything to do this due to this track pad problem I have explained (probably badly!) above.
I should point out that everything was fine for a few days after upgrading to Mountain Lion and then the above problems started.
Can anyone help?  I’m pretty stressed with the whole thing as I can’t use my Macbook now and am worried it’s permanently broken!!
Or am I better just taking it along to the genius bar at my local Apple store?
    Thanks in advance.

Not the same symptoms, but I noticed that after a few days of running great, odd things started happening on my iMac. The first thing was that when I would boot the Mac up for the first time in the morning, it would boot into single user mode. I have the Apple Bluetooth keyboard, so I know there's no way keys are being held down.
The other symptom was that Microsoft Outlook 2011 would hang on launch. It would get stuck on the "Setting Up Identities..." phase. Rebuilding the Outlook database would help until the next time I shut the iMac down.
Also a couple of times it got to the Desktop after a boot, but not everything was working correctly and some startup items didn't load.
The iMac also kept booting into single user mode on the first boot.
I tried reinstalling Mountain Lion, and I thought that fixed both problems, until the next morning. Now I just don't shut the Mac down. I can close Outlook, and it launches in a couple of seconds.
So it would appear that something is becoming corrupt when OS X is shut down. If I don't shut it down, it's fine.
