  • How do you know what version Mac OSX is on ANOTHER drive?

How do you know what version Mac OSX is on ANOTHER drive without starting that drive
and seeing the system profiler? In fact, because the drive wont start up, Now I am wondering if it is pre-intel. ? CMD-I doesn't do it. Thanks

Why mess with this? Well, I got the HDDs and the enclosure from my previous PPC, so I'd like to make use of it all without $pending again.
I don't see any problems with using the card and drives on your new Mac. Hardware is too pricey to just leave behind if you can't help it. With the new drivers I suspect you'll be able to use your drives, I just don't think you'll be able to boot from them if the interface card requires drivers. They should still be very fast storage devices, and probably reliable due to the ongoing support the vendor has provided.
I went through the same type of issue when I bought my Dual G4 1.42 Tower (upgraded from a Quadra 840AV ). Several of my devices were SCSI (I was into SCSI Wide/Fast drive arrays at the time for video capture), and I was able to use an Adaptec card for scanning for several years with Jaguar and Panther. I'd spent quite a bit of cash to ensure high quality and performance and didn't want to loose all of the investment. Eventually the SATA hard drives and other USB and Firewire replacements became so cheap and performance improved enough that loosing SCSI with Tiger was not a big deal. I do think I should get about 5 years of hardware compatibility with most products and I keep older Mac's around for dedicated services as long as they aren't a costly maintenance issue.

  • I Cloud. How does it know my various Macs?

I Cloud lets one purchase an Op and it will appear on all my MAC devices. How does it know all my MAC devises?

You would have to be signed in with the same Apple ID in iCloud settings in System Preferences on each Mac.

  • How do I know if my Mac Book Pro and iMac support Windows 7 64 bit

How do I know if my Macbook Pro and iMac will support Windos 7 64 bit? Macbook Pro is 2.26 GHz Intel Duo Core and iMax is 3.06 GHz Intel Duo Core? I need a software application that runs only on Windows

as i know, all the macs with intel CPU will run 64bit version of windows. so dont worry! but choosing 32 bit or 64 bit version of windows usually depends on how much ram you have unless you have to use some application that requires 64bit windows. if you have more than 3GB of ram go for 64bit.

  • HT5228 How do I know if my mac is infected?

I am new to mac and just saw media reports about 600K infected macs.  How do I know if mine is infected?

Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ If you’re running Mac OS X 10.7 or later, open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the page that opens.
    Step 1
Copy or drag — do not type — the line below into the Terminal window, then press return:
    launchctl getenv DYLD_INSERT_LIBRARIES
Post the lines of output,if any, that appear below what you just entered (the text, please, not a screenshot.)
    Step 2
Repeat with this line (triple-click anywhere in it to select the whole line):
    find /Applications /System/Library/CoreServices -type d -name *.app -exec defaults read {}/Contents/Info LSEnvironment \; 2> /dev/null | grep DYLD_INSERT_LIBRARIES
If you get no output from either step, you're not infected with any variant of Flashback that I know of.

  • How do you know if your Mac is 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz 802.11n?

We have a 2007 iMac and an original MacBook Air, which were both bought in January of 2008. And a brand new 17-inch MacBook Pro. Our Time Capsule is the older non-dual band model which was bought with the iMac and MacBook Air, again in January of 2008.
If they are all 5GHz, I would think I would want to set the Time Capsule's Radio Mode for "802.11n only (5GHz)."
Assuming that they are all 5GHz, is this what I should do for maximum efficiency, or does it really matter?
(And yes, I know that our iPhones would not be able to use the 5GHz band. Not a problem)

That's true. Apparently the 5Ghz band can use 40 mhz bandwith, rather than 20 mhz, which when combined with the relatively few 5ghz devices, means it can be quite a bit faster. I routinely get about 8-10 MB/sec (that's 64-80 megabits/sec) with my 2007 Macbook Pro and my Airport Extreme base station (802:11n). The signal from the Airport Extreme is pretty strong across even from about 150 feet away, and through several walls, but the speed drops significantly (to around 2 MB/sec at best)
Unfortunately, I'm not sure how to confirm your Macs support 5 ghz, apart from simply trying to connect to a 5 Ghz only network. I would assume that since my late 2007 MacBook Pro supports it, your Macbook (and probably Macbook Air) will support it too. I can't say for the iMac.
You can look in the Airport section of System Profiler, then look for an entry like this:
    Supported PHY Modes: 802.11 a/b/g/n
Note the 802:11 a - apparently the "a" refers to the 5 Ghz band, which is used by 802:11n. So, if it shows this, I figure it should work fine.

  • How do i know if my mac book is working on N speed

I just bought the new airport extreme and there is a software that allow to change the configuration of the mac books from G speed to N. I check that i have that software installed, but i don't know how to make it work. I don't know if it is working but i surely don't feel any difference on the speed of my network.
If somebody can help me telling me how to check is my mac book is working on N will be really appreciated.
Also, can somebody tell me how many kb/sec is N speed and G speed. And how to se at what speed I<m tranfering data between my macbook and my external drive.
    thanks

Log out and log back in, if you haven’t done so recently.

Repeat with this line (triple-click anywhere in it to select the whole line):
    find /Applications /System/Library/CoreServices -type d -name *.app -exec defaults read {}/Contents/Info LSEnvironment \; 2> /dev/null | grep DYLD_INSERT_LIBRARIES
The command will take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear.
If you get no output from either step, you're not infected with any variant of Flashback that I know of.

  • How do I know whether my MAC or Airport Express is running at 'n' speed

    G'Day
I have my current model MacBook Pro and new Airport Express up and running - no problems love it. It seams like a faster conntection but its always pretty subjective unless you run a test (which I am too lazy to do).
Does any one know how we you can tell whether the conntection is happening at b/g/ or n speeds. My windows machine tells me that is connection at using 802.11 G but I can't seem to find anywhere in the Airport utility or in MAC OS to show what mode it is connected in
    Thanks in advance

I'm not to sure I would rely on the data in the logs and stats on the extreme, I have some devices apparently working at -1 mbit/s (yes minus one).
Don't forget, as well as the n enabler which is installed when you install the airport utility, there is an update available which you should install on all your macs connected to the extreme

  • How do I know if my mac is compatable for airport express?

Stupid question I know but I have a minimac osx 10.3.9 when checking
under system profile this is the info I get: hardware: airport card: no information found.
I take it this means I cannot use airport express

Not sure about your question... The AirPort Express (AX) is a 802.11b/g wireless router.
...I have a minimac osx 10.3.9 when checking
under system profile this is the info I get: hardware: airport card: no information found.
I take it this means I cannot use airport express
That indicates that your Mac mini does not have a wireless card installed. Therefore you would not be able to make a wireless link to an AirPort Express (AX).
However... you could connect your Mac mini via Ethernet to a LAN port on a wireless router. Then configure an AX to join the wireless network as a wireless client. The Mac mini would then be able to stream music through the wireless router to the AX.

  • How do I know if my Mac has been infected with the virus

I recently was asked to download an Adobe Acrobat reader update but before I was made aware that the current virus was contained in a similar request, I downloaded what I assumed to be a legit update.  I currently do not use my mail program on my Mac so am unaware of any spam being distributed from the computer.  How can I identify if my computer has been infected with this Trojan Horse virus?

Two Helpful Links Regarding Flashback Trojan
A link to a great User Tip about the trojan: Flashback Trojan User Tip
A related link in the tip to a checker: Malware Checker Dowload Link
A Google search can reveal a variety of alternatives on how the remove the trojan should your computer get infected. This can get you started.
For now I recommend the User Tip from etressoft to detect and remove:

  • How do you know if a Mac was stolen?

I know this isn't the right place for this question but none of the other sections were suitable either.
I'm considering buying a used MacBook Pro from Craigslist. Because some of the prices are so cheap though, I became suspicious. I figure... If someone is going to sell their MacBook Pro for a couple hundred, there must be a reason, right? My guess is that some of them must be stolen because by having a cheap price, they're bound to get rid of it quickly.
Anyways, I just want to know if there's anyway of testing/checking to see if a Mac was stolen or not before purchasing it. Also, if there's a way of doing a quick diagnostics on it to make sure it's in good running condition.
    Thanks.

I purchased a MBP around Christmas and while on my search I came across a few (3+) MBPs that were offered for sale at incredible deals. The general description was they were purchased as gifts to the seller and he didn't need them because he already had a computer. Somebody else went to check out one of these computers was able to discover that the seller purchased these computers with a solen credit card.
My guess is that once the CC company reports the theft to Apple, the serial number associated with the machine will show up on their data base and if you needed to repair your unit, it would/could bring up the stolen flag.

  • How do i know if my Mac has a virus? or any kind of malware? im running OS Mavericks.

I'm worried because one of my friends opened a website that seemed weird and i dont know if i could of gotten a virus or malware.

If your friend was using your Mac to visit this web site, you really should only allow your friend to use your Mac from the guest account. If you do that everything they do in the guest account will be erased when they log off you Mac. Also being on the guest account will prevent them from installing anything. That can really be helpful in preventing any such problems.
To do that just use Fast User Switching to login to the guest account and then give it to them.
My answer if they don't like that solution is to tell them to go find someone else's Mac to use then.

  • How do I know if migrating mac to mac is stuck?

I got my new MacBook Pro in the mail yesterday and, without checking forums, went ahead and did the migration wirelessly. I am migrating from another MacBook Pro. I don't remember what operating system it has, but I think it's Lion. It's three years old. The only difference between the two (other than the fact that the new one is probalby opperating Mountain Lion) is that the new one has more RAM and a bigger hard drive. As everyone knows, it's taking forever. After more than 24 hours it says "About 221 hours and 47 minutes remaining". It has fluctuated everywhere from 147 hours to, well, this is about as high as it's gone. I'm worried because the estimation hasn't changed at all for at least an hour and there's just no way to know if it's still working. Other than the little progress bar, nothing changes, and that doesn't seem to have changed either. How long do I let it go? I am not knowledgable enough to try to rebuild one or both hard drives if I screw them up.

    Hello gatormommy97,
If that migration happens to still be chugging along, you're in luck. We've got step-by-step instructions for performing an Erase & Install on the new MacBook Pro. This will restore it to 'factory defaults,' just like it came out of the box for the first time, allowing you to start fresh with an alternative migration method.
