How do I make changes to an external drive connected to my Mac mini from my Windows 7 PC

I have an external drive which I learned had to be FAT32 for the read write option to be set in the Mac Mini.  I did that and moved all the media files back on the external HDD.  On the Mac Mini, I shared the 4 folders I needed (Ebooks, Movies, TV Shows, and Transfer).  Also on the Mac, I added a user account "Ephraim" because that is the login I have for the WIN7.  No Passwords are used right now.  The current login being used on the mac is "Media".  With the change to FAT32 I have set the permissions on the MAC to Read/ Write for Everybody.  Everything listed shows read/write.   From the WIN 7 "Ephraim" login, I mapped drives for every folder on Mac external.  So, "TV Shows" is drive letter Z:.  I can access all the folders/drives to view the files but, still get an error when attempting to change a name or move a file.  "You need permission to perform this action.  You require permission from the Computer's administrator to make changes to this file".  On the Mac and the PC, the user accounts "Media" and "Ephraim" are set to administrator.  SMB and AFP are selected under options.  Under Get info, permissions show read write.  I created a media login on the PC but could not see the mac mini at all.  FYI the Mac mini is connected via ethernet.

In addition, I just realized I can make changes to sub folder names and move sub folders in to other sub folders. For Example: I have "Dexter" folder and Sub folders named "Season 1" and "Season 2".  I move "Dexter Season 3" into "Dexter" folder, and I change the name to "Season 3".  That can be done but I still cannot move a video file from an existing folder or change video file name itself.  For example: I cant move a movie file from a sub folder to Gen Pop of the Movie folder, or change the name to my format.  I want all files under movies with no other folders present, and I want the name to follow a format (Name Year Ex: "Flight 2012"). I have the mac mini in the living room and need to be able to make changes or additions from my desk, so as to not disturb people who are watching Cable TV by changing the input to work on the Mac files.

I converted from a PC to a Mac Mini.  I have my PC documents backed up on a DVD disk.  I have an external DVD drive connected to the Mac Mini.  I want to open these documents up from the DVD storage and save them to the Mac, BUT....when I put the DVD disk in the Mac is NOT reading it!

    Hi Joe,
Thanks for your quick response.  I should add....it worked before.  When I previously inserted the two DVDs into this remote drive, and I went into finder, I could click on the "remote device" line and see all my saved documents (excel, word, etc) on the DVD and open them on the Mac.  Now I cannot see them, when I try to open them on the Mac, nothing happens, nothing is displayed.  I just re-tested the remote DVD drive with a CD and, no problem, it opened up the CD via iTunes and I cold play the CD.  SO......I know the remote DVD drive (it's an LG by the way) is fine, it's something to do with some settings on my mini mac, especially where I could open it previously.  I do not remember changing any settings since then.
When I go into system preferences and click on CD/DVD it gives me options of how to open up a music CD (default is iTunes), a DVD (default is iMovie), etc.  The problem is my DVD is all miscellaneious files/documents.  I just want to be able to see them in the finder.  I also tried to open them via microsoft word, from the remote disk and again, it could not open the drive, even though some of the documents were microsoft word documents.  Again, I was able to open them previously and the DVD is not corrupted in any way.
    Any additional advice?
    Thank you!

  • How can I share external devices connected to my Mac mini via USB on a wired network.

Own a Mac mini with Mountain Lion.  Purchased the server app.  The Mac mini is connected to a wired network with Mac’s and Windows machines.  I have an external hard drive and 2 printers connected to the MAC mini via USB.  I would like to share these devices with other computers on the wired network. Although I have attached similar devices with an airport extreme in the past, I am unable to use a wireless router in this case.  Any suggestions on making this work with my current setup?

You don't really even need server app to do this. Simply go to System Preferences | Sharing and turn on both File & Printer sharing. Then, for example, the printer (not relevant what connection it has but obviously USB is fine) will be available to everyone on the wired network.
That's all there is to it - unless I missed/misunderstood something re: your setup which seems very straightforward.

  • How can I format or erase an external drive connected to a wireless router

I am working with a mac mini running OS X 10.7.4. The mini is connected to the internet via a linksys router. I have an external drive connected to the router. The router is listed under the shared list in Sidebar. If I select the router in the sidebar the external drive is displayed as a folder. Is there a way to have this external drive treated as a drive and not a folder? I would like to be able to erase/format the drive from my mini. I know that I can connect the external drive to the mini and perform the erase but I would like to know if there is a way to do it through the router.
    thanks for the help

It is not usually possible to do this with router connected
hard drives.  Routers with this capability basically have
its own OS, usually some minimilistic form of Linux or
propriotary RTOS, that actually interface to the drives
and runs the file server.  This in itself prevents any
"outsider" from formating the attached drives.  Much in the
same way that you cannot use Disk Utility on one Mac
to format a network connected volume on another Mac.

  • USB external drive not readable by mac but readable by windows

Hi, I have a usb external drive (Seagate FreeAgentDesktop Media) which works fine with windows xp but cannot be read by the mac. I reinstalled the mac a couple of days ago because it was being very slow and I had a bunch of junk on it. Anyway, after that, it won't read the external drive. It will give me an error message saying that the disk is not readable by the computer. Sometimes it will give me the message saying that the drive was unmounted improperly by windows and for me to unmount it correctly. When I go back to windows, it's there, then I restart and go back to mac, it'll give me the message that the disk is not readable. I have 2 of these drives and both of them have this issue. I also tried disk warrior but it says that the file system cannot be rebuilt. I tried USB flashdrives and they work. I got all the data off of one of the external drives into the other and I couldn't format or even erase the drive because it says that the permission was denied. However, I could format it and erase it with the installation DVD. But I had the same result no matter what format they were in. I have very important data on these drives and I really need to be able to use them with both operating systems. Thanks a lot!

    Hi Schmerz Meister;
If DiskWarrior say it can rebuild the disk about your only other alternative it to reformat it.
This will of course destroy all data on the disk so make sure you have copies of the data elsewhere,
    Allan

  • Backing up to external drive connected to another mac on network

My sister has an external drive connected to her iMac which she backs up her Mac to using Time Machine. I have a Mac Mini downstairs that I would also like to back up to the drive (also using Time Machine.) Is there any way to mount the drive on the Mac Mini downstairs over the network and use Time Machine to back it up?
    Thanks in advance!

In System Preferences/Sharing, check to File Sharing, on her machine. It should show up as a choice, when you connect to her. Then, once mounted, drag it's icon to the right side of the dock. Just click that next time you need to connect.

  • How can I make more room on external drive for Time Machine?

I now have Time Machine installed and in use on my external drive, which also still has my previous backup on it which used a different system (Dejavu). The external drive's capacity is 74 GB; 58.22GB are used, my iMac hard drive (backed up with TIme Machine) has 38.12 GB used, which by my calculation means about 20GB of the 58 on the external drive are the prior backup. Is there a way I can erase this prior backup, which now duplicates Time Machine, thereby making more room for Time Machine in the future? For instance, if need be, can I erase the whole thing and reinstall Time Machine on it? Thanks!

James, if you open your TM drive, I'm guessing you see the usual System, Library, Users, and Applications folder along with a folder labeled something like Backup.bkup. (I'm away from a TM backup and I can't exactly recall the name of the TM backup folder.)
The DejaVu backup is just a standard file backup using 'rsync' so you can delete whatever you want by simply dragging it to the trash and emptying the trash. If the drive is bootable, you may not want to lose that ability. But assuming there's nothing in your user folder on that backup that isn't also on your computer, you can delete just about everything in your User folder on that drive. You can delete selected applications too. And if you don't mind losing the ability to boot, you can drag everything but the TM backup folder.

  • TS1389 How can I make a song automatically play when I turn my Mac Mini?

I want for my computer to play a song automatically when I turn my computer on. Is this possible?

As long as you don't mind doing a little post publish editing of your .js files, it's fairly easy to do. You will find them in this path on your iDisk, using the Go menu in Finder:
    Go/iDisk/MyiDisk/Sites/iWeb/Nameofsitefolder/Page_filesFolder/Page.js
Open the .js files for that particular page on your iDisk with any text editor (I like Taco, and it's free) and make the following changes to the script code that controls your movie: (you will find the movie code near the top of the page in the .js file)
    Change autoplay="false" to autoplay="true"
    Change loop="false" to loop="true"
Changing controller value="true" to controller value="false" will remove the controller from the page entirely. Make these changes in both sets of tags, (object and embed).
Make the changes and just "Save". Clear your browser cache and you should see the changes take effect immediately. Bear in mind you will have to make this modification each time you republish your site. You can also save this modified .js file and replace the republished file with it, as long as no other changes were made to the page in iWeb.

  • External drives spinning up on Mac Mini wake up

These are IOMega MiniMax hard drives. When the Mini goes to sleep, they stay on. But when the Mini wakes up, they all turn off, then on. I figure it's OS X re-mounting them. Is there no way of getting around that, because it's not good for the hard drives to spin down/up so often.

They should be fine and won't use as much electricity that way.
If you are concerned enough to do something different the use of a powered USB or FireWire hub, depending on the bus, will keep them from powering down when the Mac does.

  • How do I combine my content from 3 external hd's and my 1 Mac Mini to my new Time Capsule (which is connected to my Mac Mini) and not have to use my external hd's again? My Mac Mini wont hold all the content on the external hd's.

My 3 external hd's are 500GB (total 1.5TB) and my Mac Mini is 500GB (Time Capsule is connected to this). I want to be able to have all the content from all these sources stored on my Time Capsule as if I only had 1 external drive. Is this possible? It is my understanding that when Time Machine backs up my Mac Mini I have to have my external drives connected since my Mac Mini does not have enough space on it to hold all the content on the exgternal hd's. I can only connect 1 external hard drive at a time and I want to get rid of them and consolidate.
And having to go back in time to search for files on 1 external hard drive and then back in time for the other external hard drive is not the most efficient thing to do. I would like it all in one place.
    Thank you for your help!!

    Back up all data.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    ~/Library/Application Support/SyncServices
Right-click or control-click the line and select
Services ▹ Reveal in Finder (or just Reveal)
from the contextual menu.* A folder should open with an item selected. Quit the application if it's running. Move the selected item to the Trash. Relaunch the application and test.
*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination  command-C. In the Finder, select
              Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar and paste into the box that opens by pressing command-V. You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.

  • How do i setup itunes only on external drive with windows

well i have windows xp running on bootcamp. i have my main library on my internal drive on my os x partition.
i want to have music with xp without putting music on my bootcamp partition ( i think my size is 25 or 35 gig). how do i do this on my external drive? do i install itunes on my windows external partition and just copy my music folder there and then import?
i want to make sure i have a good idea of what to do before i start fooling around. my windows partition is fat 32 while my bootcamp is ntsf

Move the iTunes music folder to the desired location, and then drag it into the open iTunes window. iTunes itself must be on the startup disk.

  • Imac has crashed..need new hard drive....had external drive connected...was using time machine.....so...itunes file should be on external drive....how do i import them to my new mac mini?

my iMac has crashed...was told I need a new hard drive.....meantime I bought a mac mini.....I had an external drive connected to the mac....and was using time machine for backups....so....how do i move itunes music files to my new mac mini from the external drive?

Turn Time Machine OFF temporarily in its preference pane. Leave the window open.
Navigate in the Finder to your backup disk, and then to the folder named "Backups.backupdb" at the top level of the volume. If you back up over a network, you'll first have to mount the disk image file containing your backups by double-clicking it. Descend into the folder until you see the snapshots, which are represented by folders with a name that begins with the date of the snapshot. Find the one you want to restore from. There's a link named "Latest" representing the most recent snapshot. Use that one, if possible. Otherwise, you'll have to remember the date of the snapshot you choose.
Inside the snapshot folder is a folder hierarchy like the one on the source volume. Find one of the items you can't restore and select it. Open the Info dialog for the selected item. In the Sharing & Permissions section, you may see an entry in the access list that shows "Fetching…" in the Name column. If so, click the lock icon in the lower right corner of the dialog and authenticate. Then delete the "Fetching…" item from the access list. Give yourself read access if you don't already have it. Click the gear icon below the list and select Apply to enclosed items from the popup menu.
Now you should be able either to copy the item in the Finder or to restore it in the time-travel view. If you use the time-travel view, be sure to select the snapshot you just modified. If successful, repeat the operation with the other items you were unable to restore. You can select multiple items in the Finder and open a single Info dialog for all of them by pressing the key combination option-command-I.
When you're done, turn TM back ON and close its preference pane.

  • Can't see external HD on Mac Mini from iMac

For months I had an alias on my iMac desktop that opened my external HD, connected to my Mac Mini downstairs.
It worked flawlessly. Both machines on Leopard.
I upgraded my iMac to Snow Leopard on release day (Mac Mini is still Leopard). I haven't connected to the external HD from the iMac since, but I tried it today and it can't find it.
I can browse the Mac Mini, and connect as my admin account and browse the entire Mac Mini HD, but the External HD just doesn't show up.
The external HD is still working fine on the mac mini itself, I just cant see it remotely.
Snow Leopard issue or something else?
    Cheers

Apple told me that the HD drive doesn't show up on other user's page, as it has been hidden on purpose by apple, and only shows up on the main user of the computer, Are you the main user on the computer, if so maybe a problem but if you are an added user it just shows up a blank screen
