How do I move a pattern layer independent of its vector mask?

I've created a pattern fill layer and assigned a vector mask to it. How do I move the pattern around without affecting the mask? I realize if I want to rotate the pattern I'd need to convert it to a smart object, but if I only need to adjust the pattern location there must be some way to do that without moving the vector mask along with it. A traditional layer shows the vector and raster mask layer with a lock icon, but fill pattern layers are different for some reason. Can someone "fill" me in?

Yes, I understand that. I am working with pattern layers, not layers filled with a bitmap pattern.
That is not what your showing above in red above your showing a shape layer in CS6 a pattern fill layer with a vector mask is a cs6 shape layer. Even the icon on the layer's content in the layers palette shows its a shape layer.  You can edit the vector mask you can not unlink it. For its a cs6 shape layer.  As you noted you can first convert pattern fill layer into a smart object layer. It then acts like a normal pixel layer with an associated transform to the canvas size. Your no longer dealing with a pattern fill layer. When you rotate it you will have the same problem with the layers corners areas.  CS6 changed shape layers design they have more options then prior  versions of Photoshop and prior versions of Photoshop can not handle CS6 shape layers that used cs6 shape options like stroke, line type, and pattern fills.

  • What is the purpose of the chain (lock symbol) between a solid color layer and its vector mask?

    What is the purpose of the chain (lock symbol) between a solid color layer and its vector mask in the layer panel when creating shape layers with a shape tool? I'm just curious when locking or unlocking the solid color layer and its vector mask can make a difference.

    I don't understand what you said and your shape layer looks different then mine using CS5.
    When the chain is deselected, I can't do anything with the move tool on the shape layer. This is the only difference I can find. Making the solid color uniform or not doesn't change anything.
    Your example shows that you moved the position of the solid color, how did you do that? I can create a solid color layer and change its uniform look by applying an effect like gradient but I can't move the solid color itself around. How is this possible?

  • How do i move the second layer?

    I can move the first layer (background) however I'm having trouble moving the second layer.

    What does that layer contain? A normal pixel layer, you can use the move tool {v}. A shape layer you can use the direct selection tool {a} make sure the layer is selected first, then with the direct selection tool click on the path to move. You can also use the group selection tool this moves the object only whereas the direct selection tool can select points on the path and move just those.
    If you are unsure, capture your entire screen with the layers panel open and any collapsed layers expanded. Then post it here.

  • Why does the vector selection tool (white arrow) change layer selection to another vector mask?

    I have been continually annoyed, when creating a vector mask-heavy document, with trying to select vector mask points by dragging a rectangle only to find that it instead selects a layer higher up which has a larger vector mask.
    The only workaround is to manually select the points of my mask or to drag a rectangle from outside the canvas, meaning I have to zoom out or scroll to the edge - sometimes annoying if I am zoomed in quite far.
    Does anyone know any resolution for this?
    I know that the move tool can be set to automatically select a layer, depending on what part of the image is clicked, but why is there not an option to turn this off for vector editing?

    What version of Photoshop are you using????
    The White Arrow tool is the direct selection tool and it work best way you point it at a path segment line and click once.  When you do all the control points in a close path segment will be marked with little squares and the two control point adjacent to where you clicked will have handles you can adjust.
    You can also drag out a rectangle with the direct selection tool. When you do you may select many closed paths in a path a path may have many sub paths and each has a mode like add, subtract, intersect etc, and each has a stacking order like in a layer stack. So if you drag out a rectangle many paths control points will be marked and control point adjacent to crossing rectangle will have handles. Can be very confusing.
    Here are two screen capture the first on shows the layer palette and path palette.  You can see many shapes and path with sub paths and modes. I also targeted layer a vector mask. The selected the direct selection tool and in the image window I pointed at the 45 degree oval path near the top right. You cab see the four control points and two with handles.   The second screen capture  I only captured the image window. I used the direct selection tool and draged out a rectangle and you cab see many segments control points and many have handles. I have no problem selecting what I want to select

  • How do I move a whole layer in Illustrator CS6?

    I've got a project where the same set of paths, all on a same layer, repeat multiple times, forming a sort of spline. Is there any way to select a whole layer, and only that layer, then move it about the canvas?

    In the Layers panel click on the right side of the layer you want to select like this and all the objects on that layer will be selected. Then move as needed. Make sure it is a large stroked square not a small unstroked one.

  • Save As and Print dialog boxes appear behind Firefox which locks everything. How do I move or shut down Firefox while its waiting on a hidden dialog?

    When this happens I can't access the dialog or move or close Firefox, including from the Task Manager (Task Manager says it's waiting for Firefox to complete the operation). I usually have to shut down the computer.

    cor-el,
    I kept forgetting and procrastinating about following your instructions, since I have internet access only for limited amounts of time and usually I am busy with important tasks when I am.
    Out of the blue, the problem corrected itself (the Save As box started to open full screen, then shrunk down to a normal size and the edges can now be dragged to a custom size).
    Even the copy and paste problem in the filenaming area seems to have been less troublesome lately even though there have been no updates to Firefox in a few weeks.
    Even though I marked the solution as not helpful, the problem has in fact been resolved. I will save the solution instructions in case the issue returns.

  • How do I move or copy a shape layer's path to another layer?

    i'm looking how to apply an existing vector shape from a layer to another, before it was simple as hell just by alt + drag 'n drop from a layer to another.
    But now this command doesn't work anymore ? so how i can do it ? i need to simply apply a vector clipping mask to a bitmap layer or a group or just apply a shape to another vector layer (not the blending option)
    why it's not anymore possible ? it was simple and easy since CS1 or 2 why have you changed that ?

    It's unclear to me from your keyboard shortcuts whether you are on Windows or Mac, so here are the keyboard shortcuts for both platforms:
    Command-drag (Mac)/Ctrl-drag (Win) the shape layer thumbnail to move the shape path to another layer.
    Command-Option-drag (Mac)/Ctrl-Alt-drag (Win) the shape layer thumbnail to copy the shape path to another layer.
    We had to make this slight change since there is no longer a separate vector mask thumbnail on shape layers.
    For non-shape layers with a separate vector mask, the old keyboard shortcuts should still work for moving/copying the vector mask.

  • How do I move a layer to a mask that is on another layer?

    Layer 3 is black and white image of abstract art.
               It has many holes in it as most abstracts do...too complex
               to mask manually with a brush so, I made a b/w mask by converting
               it to b/w and adjusting brightness/contrast..
    Layer 2 has the color version of Layer 3 with a mask thumb next to it.
    I want to move or copy Layer 3 into the mask of Layer 2.
    I found a solution for CS5 but it doesn't work for Photoshop Elements 10.
    Any help would be appreciated.

    Make Layer 3 active and select all (Ctrl-A) and copy it (Ctrl-C).
    Alt-click on the empty mask thumbnail, that will give you a white work area.
    Click on it and paste (Ctrl-V).

  • How to I move an adobe document to my drop box

    How do I move a  copy of a manual (camera instructions booklet) on adobe to my dropbox?  I can't figure out what do click.

    Fraky, thanks for posting yoru solution, hardly anyone ever does that around here and it's really appreciated.
    I was going to suggest you procompse or nest your image into its own layer and then use the layer as the source for the drop box. Then you can independently adjust the layer upstream of the box.
    Umm, I haven't actually tested that. My workflow for similar efforts is to render the moves and effects as a movie first and drop the movie into the box.

  • How can I create a new layer that is a gradient?

    Hi, i'm very new to photoshop scripting and am having some trouble.
    I'm looking for a way to take an image i have and set it to have a gradient opacity as it approaches the middle, my thought on how to do that was to just create a layer that is a gradient from top left to bottom right and then attach that as a vector mask.
    Any ideas on how I could create this gradient layer in script, or a better method of doing this opacity gradient?
    Thanks in advance,
    Levianth

    You could try this:
    // 2012, use it at your own risk;
    #target photoshop
    if (app.documents.length > 0) {
    var myDocument = app.activeDocument;
    var theLayer = myDocument.activeLayer;
    if (theLayer.isBackgroundLayer == true) {theLayer.isBackgroundLayer = false};
    // create gradient layer;

  • How do I move content from one file to another ?

    Hi,
    I have two separate DVD Studio Pro files that I created a while back (single-sided DVD).
    Now I want to put them both on a dual layer DVD. However, I can't figure out for the life of me how to copy content between files. I don't want to "recreate" one of the DVDs from scratch.
    How do I move the menus, tracks, stories, etc from one DVD Studio Pro file to another ?
    Thanks,
    Damon

    You do not need to move the media into the new project assuming all the media is available and on the same hard drive. Usually I keep all DVD SP projects and media on an external drive so it is easy-ish to do. Of course if you copy the assets into the folder for a project it makes thingss easier to move around to other drives. In other words I will create a Poject folder called "MYPROJECT" and in there I will placefolders "MYPROJECTM2Vs", "MYPROJECTAC3S", "MYPROJECTGRAPHICS" etc so if I have to move projects to other computers easier to re-link. Takes up a bit more room if you use the same asset in more than one project but with the costs of Drives so low right now it is worth the lkess hassle to me...

    How can I move someone's hair from one photo to another and place it on another person? I have gone through every instructional video you have and have not been able to master this

    Open picture B, the one you wish to select the hair from to add to the picture.
    Use one of the selection tools, e.g. selection brush, lasso tool, to select the hair. You will see an outline ("marching ants") once the selection is complete
    Go to Edit menu>copy to copy the hair to the clipboard
    Open picture A, then go to Edit>paste
    Use the move tool to position the hair from picture B.
    In the layers palette you should see picture A as the background layer, and the hair (B) on a separate layer.

  • How do I move an object from one photo to another and then change the scene, i.e.  winter to sum?

    How do I move an object from one photo to another and then change the scene, i.e.  winter to summer?

    OK.
    Open the picture with the new scene. This will be your canvas.
    Open the picture with object A, select it with one of the selection tools, go to Edit>copy
    Go back to the new scene/canvas, Go to Edit>paste
    Repeat for object B
    Use the move tool to position A & B, each on its own layer. Use the corner handles of the bounding box to resize, if necessary
    You should have 3 layers: Background layer, and the 2 layers with A & B
    Note: It's best if the resolution of the 3 picture files is the same value.
