How do I open files in InDesign CS5.5 CS5?

Hi, are you trying to open up a CS5.5 document in CS5? If so you need to export the docment while in InDesign CS5.5 to the IDML format.
Please refer to this document: http://help.adobe.com/en_US/indesign/cs/using/WSa285fff53dea4f8617383751001ea8cb3f-6d52a.h tml#WSa285fff53dea4f8617383751001ea8cb3f-6d4da

How do I open a CC InDesign 2014 to Indesign CC? It won't open on InDesign CC

    Hi jesslucia2,
Are you facing issue opening files created on CC2014 on CC version, If yes then you can follow the following article. You have to save the files in IDML format in order to open them in older versions.
    http://helpx.adobe.com/indesign/kb/save-indesign-files-previous-versions.html
If you have CC version installed , you can also try to upgrade to CC2014 version from Adobe Creative Cloud Desktop App and open the files without any problem.

Files on an external hard drive open just like files on the internal drive - but I get the idea that you are having a problem just finding and seeing those files. Is that correct?

How can I open file; such as create other programme(Dream weaver...etc)?

Imagine iWeb as a database which upon your command creates html files. It's a one-way process. You can generate more html files later but iWeb cannot open them. It only works with the "database" (the domain file).

  • How to Save a file in InDesign 5 so it will open in InDesign 3 (no InDesign 4)

How do I save an InDesign 5 file in InDesign 5 so it can be opened by my graphic designer in In Design 3.
    Neither of us have CS4.
She thinks she cannot open an .IDML file on In Design 3.  Can she?
What do I do to save it to get it to her so she can open it?
    Judy B.

First lets calrify the numbering. InDesign version 5 IS CS3. CS5 is actually version 7. It's kind of confusing.
Now for the bad news. No way at all that you can make a file directly from CS5 that can be opened in CS3. One of us would be willing to do the two-stp converion of a single file for you, but you need to understand that this is not, repeat NOT a good way to collaborate. You should both be working inthe same version if you expect to send files back and forth. The CS5 file is likely to be mangled (new features lost, potential text reflow) after going back two versions, and there are enough reports of issues with opening CS3 files in CS5 to make me gunshy, even though I've not seen a single case of trouble with my own files.

Try telling students who barely have two nickels to rub together these days that they have to outlay $400-500 dollars every year to be able to keep up to date with the programs at their schools. I can barely get these kids to package their files properly and now they have to remember to export their files to idml and remember to put them in their folders before they copy it onto their external hard drive to bring it home to work on. Is it really necessary to update every bloody year and charge these kids so much to upgrade. And this time only for a .5 upgrade?  A lot of these kids have parents that are sacrificing every thing to pay for their kids college education. What message is adobe sending to these kids? That the study of graphic design is only for the rich who can afford to upgrade every year. Have a heart in this economy.
Your points about the hardship of expensive learning materials, and the extra work involved in saving to IDML, are all valid.
If/when online applications come into common use, some of the issues may fade away, because the newest and older versions will always be available for a user to choose from.
In the meantime, perhaps some of these suggestions will be useful:
    * Adobe's volume licensing plan (VLP, I think) and transactional licensing plan (TLP) have been mentioned in this forum, in regard to the option of buying licenses for earlier releases. My thought is that your school could "freeze" their installations at a useful recent release, to extend the useful life of a student's own purchased educational copy. Search Google for terms like "InDesign volume license transactional license" without quotes. Also, perhaps someone who knows more about these options will jump in here.
    * Unless there are compelling class needs for the new features in new releases, there's no need to upgrade. Depending on the course's level, some features wouldn't be needed for lower-level classes; for the higher-level classes, use the newer software.
    * If possible, allow students to install DropBox, or other  online storage software, on the school computers, so they can save files remotely, and access them from any Internet connection. This won't eliminate the saving to IDML step, but it can eliminate the copy-to-transport-media step, simplifying things a bit. There may be security and other IT issues here to be worked out.
    * For students who intend to enter the design career, it may be less expensive to buy an upgradeable non-educational license, or even - shudder - a subscription. Subscriptions, I believe, can be activated and deactivated for specific periods, like rental cars, so, for example, if/when a student graduates and takes a job where the employer provides the software, or the student doesn't need the software for a semester or quarter, the subscription can be idled, and there's no cost. If the student becomes an independent designer, the subscription can be reactivated when there's work to be done. I believe Bob Levine once posted a comparison, on this forum, of cost-to-license InDesign, for subscriptions vs. other licensing methods. Bob?
Sometimes folks compare the ongoing cost of software and upgrades to other industries and careers that don't seem to have the same issues. However, the tools needed in many industries and careers are no longer so static, as in the past. Carpenters who worked with manual tools could use hammers, screwdrivers, etc., until they wore out or broke, but  the introduction of electric nail drivers, screwdrivers, and drills forced production carpenters to upgrade their tools. Perhaps the increased output of mechanized tools balanced their increased cost. Draftsmen's triangles, T-squares, pens, etc., don't need upgrades, but there have been about 20 AutoCAD software releases for them to keep up with.
Recently I had to replace my 1991 stick-shift car with a "new-to-me" 2005 model. It's like all the newer cars I've rented at times - automatic everything. I've done most maintenance and repair on the old one, and I always carried tools in case something broke on the road, and I could fix it myself. The new car is a disaster; the only fixing and maintenance I might possibly do is change a flat tire, add fuel, window-washer juice, oil, power brake and steering fluids, wash the exterior, vacuum the interior, set radio-station presets, and change the battery in the remote-control device that opens and locks the doors, and activates the entire computerized beast. There's nothing for me to do but open the doors, get in, turn on the engine, and aim in some direction.
Mechanics, whose basic-level wrenches and ignition-timing strobe lights were capable of doing an amazing range of tasks over decades of model changes, now need annual expensive software upgrades for the computerized tools that troubleshoot and maintain the modern rolling computers that have replaced cars as some of us knew them.

  • How to open files in CS4 and CS5?

The graphic designers in my office have both InDesign CS4 and InDesign CS5 installed. CS4 is set to be the default for all Adobe files. However, if they want to open an InDesign in CS5, if they right-click and select "Open With" they can't choose to open with CS5. Even if they click "browse" and manually choose CS5. Anyone know why that is? They can open InDesign CS5 and then browse to file and open it within the program, so it's not a compatibility issue. Obviously this is more a matter of convenience for them (since they work with thousands of files) than a major problem, I would just like to know if it's possible to open InDesign files this way.

It's an OS thing and you can't change it.
You can, however, purchase the Soxy plugin from Rorohiko.com that will intercept the open commands and launch the correct version of ID based on the version in which the file was saved. I believe it costs about $20.

  • How can I turn off the Typekit font check when opening files in InDesign

Adobe InDesign CC, Version 9.2.1 x32
    Windows 7 Professional 64 bit
Every time I open an existing file in InDesign which is using a font I have installed on my PC I get the following message:
"No matches were found on TypeKit, click "Find Font" to replace with fonts that exist on your computer"
I'm able to click on Find Font and then select the font that TypeKit is unable to find - can I stop it checking for this as I have the font installed on my local machine?
    Many thanks.

    Hi Adrian,
I'm sorry that you ran into trouble with this. Some users have reported an issue in the current version of InDesign which can temporarily deactivate installed fonts. Please note that this is actually unrelated to Typekit; it just happens to occur at the time you see our logo in the missing fonts window.
The InDesign team is still investigating the factors which trigger this situation, but the basic issue is this: the Missing Fonts dialog causes fonts which are managed through Extensis Suitcase and FontExplorer to not auto-activate correctly, or for managed fonts to even be visible in the application after upgrade.
In both cases, the InDesign Missing Fonts dialog appears to override the Font Management tool dialogs that allow users to manage fonts within the Application.
If you use Suitcase Fusion, there is a simple configuration change needed:
    1. close the Missing Fonts window
    3. go to the Type menu and select "Suitcase Fusion 5".
    3. From the submenu, choose "Library" and then check "All Libraries" so all fonts can be auto-activated as needed
    4. from the Type menu, select "Suitcase Fusion 5" again, and then "Check Document’s Fonts" to activate the missing fonts,
If the font is being managed by Suitcase, it will find and update the fonts.
In FontExplorer, if your managed fonts are not visible in InDesign after upgrading to InDesign 9.2
    Go to FontExplorer/Tools and select
    1. Clean System Font Caches (this will require a system reboot)
    2. Clean Application Font Caches
On non-Mavericks systems, you will need to de-activate and then reactivate font protection.  Launch a terminal window and enter
    sudo atsutil fontprotection -off
    Then enter
    sudo atsutil fontprotection -on
Relaunch InDesign. your managed fonts should now be visible and auto-activation should work.
The fonts can always be activated from within the Font Management software itself, even with the missing fonts dialog open.
The InDesign team is looking into the issue to determine the root cause as well; our apologies for any inconvenience it causes in the meantime.
    Cheers,
    Benjamin

  • How do I open/download an InDesign file/template from Safari? Is there a plug-in/extension required?

I came across a website with downloadable InDesign templates. However; Safari opens a page full of question marks and other marks instead of opening the file in InDesign. Is there a plug-in or extension required in order to download an InDesign file from the Safari browser?

You can right click the download link then select "Download Linked File As..." from the context menu.

  • Opening files from InDesign CC in CS3

    Hi all,
I have been using the wonderful InDesign CC on trial at work with the idea of purchasing it. On the 29th day of the trial someone in the office mentions we have CS3 on a laptop somewhere with all the correct licenses etc...
I have now successfully got this onto my PC, but now none of the files open as it says I am missing a whole list of plug ins and it suggests I upgrade... I dont want to upgrade as CS3 does everything I need it to at this point.
I have a copy of CS5 on my personal macbook. Can I open them in there and do something to the files so that they will open in CS3 on my PC or is there another way round it?

You have to save any INDD file from CC in CC as IDML file.
Open that IDML file in InDesign CS4 version 6.x.
Save that IDML in InDesign CS4 again as INDD.
Export that file in InDesign CS4 as INX file.
Open that INX file in InDesign CS3 version 5.x.
Save that file in InDesign CS3 as INDD.
Realize that a lot has changed, and you have to make a bunch of work to correct these problems.
    Have fun.

Is there a way to open files sequentially (one at a time) by selecting them from Bridge and then "sending" them to Photoshop (CS5)?
I've used the AutoLoader script in the past from Photoshop CS2. I was hoping that Adobe would have incorporated it into Bridge some how by now.
