How do I perform a clean install of Lion Server?

There seem to be many sites documenting how to pull out the ESD image and burn a bootable copy of Lion.
What I'd like to know is how do I perform a clean installation of Lion Server?
Is it possible to just install Lion and then open the App Store and install from Purchase without being charged again?

Okay....so Apple does have a guide related to Mass deployment which includes a rough way to do a clean OS X Server clean install. You need to use a NetBoot Lion Server as a boot, but it works.
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4746
Use these steps to create a NetRestore image of an un-configured Lion Server:
Install OS X Lion, and then Lion Server. This server will be used to create the NetRestore image.
On the server, install the app named "Install Mac OS X Lion" from the Mac App Store (a network connection is required for this process).
Install the Server Admin Tools from http://support.apple.com/downloads/ on the server.
Open the "Install Mac OS X Lion" application, and install to an empty volume. This volume can be a spare partition or external hard drive. Be sure to click the Customize button and to select the Lion Server software.
Once installation is complete, the server will restart from the newly installed volume.  Instead of completing the setup assistant, press Command-Q to quit the assistant.
Select the option to shut the server down.
Restart the server and hold the Option key.
When the Startup Manager appears, select the volume which you've already configured Lion Server on.
Open System Image Utility and create a NetRestore image from the newly installed (and still un-configured) volume. If you'd prefer to image the volume after it has already been configured, you can proceed with the setup assistant before booting back to the original installation created in step 1.

My local Applestore genius has told me to do a clean install but I don't have or can't find a copy of the Lion osX to use.

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
If you are already using OS X Lion, use OS X Recovery to reinstall OS X and erase the disk. See > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4718
    Follow these steps:
    1. Make a backup of the data you don't want to lose after erasing the hard disk.
    2. Start your computer holding Command and R keys to start in OS X Recovery, and open Disk Utility.
    3. Choose "Macintosh HD" or the OS X partition in the sidebar, go to the Erase tab and erase the disk.
    4. Close Disk Utility and reinstall OS X

  • How do I perform a clean install of ios8 on my iPhone 5

I would like to perform a clean install, meaning not putting ios8 on top of ios7.
Is there an advantage to doing this? When I installed Mavericks on my MBP I had the Genius Bar do it and it was like a new Mac,
So, my thoughts are that a clean install, starting as if it were a new phone would be the same.
    Is this true?
How would I do that after backing up through the latest iTunes.
Would I need to set up pop mail accounts from scratch or would that come back in the restore backups
As you can see, I am unsure as to the best way to make my iPhone 5 run trouble free with ios8
    Advice and instructions are welcome

  • HT1338 how do you perform a clean install for imac

How to perform a clean install for imac, because I cannot upgrade to version 10.6?

Here are the technical requirements for Snow Leopard:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/sp575
If your iMac meets the requirements, then you will have to purchase the Snow Leopard disk from apple:
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard
To reinstall your OS, insert the original OS disk that came with your iMac and start up the iMac holding the C key.  Start the installation process and when you see the menu bar, select 'Utilities'. From the drop down menu, select Disk Utility.  Erase the HDD and the continue the installation.
Note that this will erase all data on the HDD so have it backed up before you start.
    Ciao.

  • So how does one perform a clean install on U310?

    Hello,
I'm currently annoyed with software that comes pre-installed on the notebook, and would like to perform a clean install of Windows 7. I've got a bootable USB stick prepared, but don't know what to do next. Also, I'd like to install the system on the SSD drive, not on HDD, and don't want to lose warranty.
Could someone who already did this make a step-by-step guide, or at least provide some hints? Thanks!

  • Selling G4 iMac - How do I perform a clean install

I'm selling my G4 iMac to work and they have given my a Tiger disk to install. I would like it to erase all my old files such as my financial items and my photos as well as my music, etc.
Is there a way of doing a clean install which takes the computer back to square one with just the basic info on it?
    Thanks!

Boot from the restore disc. Go to the Apple menu and select Disk Utility. In Disk Utility, reformat the hard drive and choose the option to write all zeroes. After that is complete, use the restore disc to restore the iMac to its factory condition.

  • How do I do a CLEAN install of Lion?

I've just installed Lion and it runs more like Mouse. Everything has slowed right down. I've repaired permissions, and that's no better. Adobe Bridge is an absolute nightmare. I've reset it's preferences and that's not helped. It keeps asking me to restart, but restarting doesn't help either. Reading the advice in Apple communities suggest I do a clean install rather than to install over Snow Leopard.
How do I do this please? I have everything backed up to Time Machine. I'm usuing an iMac with 3.06 Ghz Core 2 Duo processor with 4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3 memory, and a 1TB hard drive. Should be fast enough to cope, but feels like an old Performa now.
Wish I was back to good old Snow Leopard!
Can anybody help? I don't want to screw things up and make it worse.
    Thank you,
    Bruce

clean installs can be done from the Lion download you get from the app store - BUT only before you install it.
i know they are now doing some new options for installs with the latest machinery with boot paritions etc, but the best bet for you is probably to re-download the lion installer from th app store, and then google this phrase
"how to make a bootable Lion install disc or drive"
and go to the mac world page telling you how to make a bootable image to burn to dvd and then do a clean install.
upgrading OS always does weird stuff, you're usually better off doing it clean - and even the migration assistant seems to be a waste of time, as you still need to re-enter all yoru serial numbser for apps etc.
best bet is to start a clean install on to a new partition or hard drive (can be external FW drive) then you start to run off the 'new' system, and keep the old one for a week or two to go grab all your favourite file and fixes for stuff. then Once you have your new OS running nicely you can ditch the old one, and clone your system over to the 'proper' internal drive.

  • I performed a "Clean" Install of Lion.  How do I get my keychain back from Time Machine?

I erased my hard drive and installed Lion.  I did do regular back ups to a USB hard drive.  I can see all the old files and applications on my backup drive.  How do I get the back up keychain passwords into my newly created Lion keychain?

Hold down the option key and select Go > Library from the Finder menu bar. That's your home Library. With that Finder window open, try to enter Time Machine. If you can, navigate to a snapshot of the Keychains folder and restore it. You may have to hold down the option key and select "Browse other Time Machine Disks" from the Time Machine menu.

  • How can I do a "clean" install of Lion

I have installed Lion over several successively upgraded versions of OS X and I'm now finding my system very wonky, with more and more small glitches and the occasional freeze. I'd like to simply start over and install it clean but, having bought the App Store rather than thumb drive version, how can I do this?
    Edward

You can do this very easily.  You can reboot in recovery mode by holding down command-R at startup, where you can erase the hard drive and reinstall the system from scratch.  However, you'll have to re-download it that way.  A better alternative is to re-download the installer from the App Store and then use it to make a bootable Lion install disk.  (I put it on an 8 GB flash drive, myself.)
However, note that there are probably some easier solutions.  Take a look at some of the suggestions in the second half of Understanding upgrade nightmares*.

  • Is there a way to perform a clean install without the Internet on the computer that my iPhone is backed up on?

I don't have Internet on my PC that my iPhone is backed up to. Without connecting it to the Internet, how can I perform a clean install? Since iOS 7 my battery life has been crap, I've tried everything except a clean install, so this is my last resort but I wanna make sure I can do it before I wipe my phone.

Installing iOS requires an Internet connection, there is no way around this.

  • How to do a clean install of Lion download from App store

How do you do a clean install of Lion downloaded from the App store.  I downloaded and it installed but never was there a time of the installation it gave me an option to do a clean install.  Thanks for any help.

Install or Reinstall Lion from Scratch
If possible backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive.
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Erase the hard drive:
Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART info will not be reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Erase button and wait until the process has completed.
Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion: Select Reinstall Lion and click on the Install button.
Note: You can also re-download the Lion installer by opening the App Store application. Hold down the OPTION key and click on the Purchases icon in the toolbar. You should now see an active Install button to the right of your Lion purchase entry. There are situations in which this will not work. For example, if you are already booted into the Lion you originally purchased with your Apple ID or if an instance of the Lion installer is located anywhere on your computer.

  • How do you do a  Clean install lion

How do you do a clean install of lion? My iMac is 8 yr old and has gotten sluggish. At one point it was suggested that I might want to do a clean install but no one ever told me how to do that since we don't have a disk!

Assuming you already have Lion installed, boot into Recovery Mode (Command-R). From there you can reinstall Lion. Note, however, that a clean install means you first erase the drive you want to do the clean install on, and unless you have a complete backup of everything that's currently on it, you'll lose it all; the clean install will leave you with a fresh operating system but nothing else. To get it all back, make that external clone, then when the clean install is finished on the internal, Setup Assitant will run and you can point it at the external clone to get all your stuff back.

  • Clean Install Mountain Lion on upgrade-SSD of a 2012 MBP

    Dear strangers,
I searched the internet for a while, but didn't seem to find an answer. I would like to buy the current MBP (non-retina) and upgrade the HDD with an SSD (since Apple prices are rather ridiculous). So I want do perform a clean install on this SSD, what is the best option? I understood that there are no installation disks anymore, but how do you perform a clean install on an 3rd party SSD when you bought a Mac(Book Pro) with Mountain Lion already installed on it? I know I could make a bootable USB drive, but then you need to have a disk image of the OS.
    Anyone? I need help quick!
    Thanks in advance,
    Arno Claes

This is the message that would happen with Lion, see this: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4649
Basically when you setup a Raid 0/1, the Lion and Mt. Lion installer won't/can't create a recovery partition.
When you boot from a recovery partition you have access to certain tools, e.g. Disk Utility to restore a Time Machine back up, redownload the OS, etc.
The recovery partition provides a certain bit of convenience but isn't absolutely necessary to run the OS. When you see the message, doesn't it let you go ahead with the install, accepting that no recovery partition will be created?
If you need some of the recovery partition tools, you have a bootable USB stick as well as a backup of the Mt. Lion installer, no?

  • Clean install of Lion and proper Time Capsule procedure.  Advice Please.

    Good day all,
I have performed a clean install of Lion.  I have previously been using a  1TB Time Capsule to backup my Snow Leopard disk.  I did not use the Time Capsule to restore my files to Lion, instead I restored individual files from a backup of my Home folder on a seperate exteral hard drive.  I have not yet enabled Time Machine in Lion.  Is it advisable to erase the Snow Leopard backups using Airport Utility before enabling Time Machine?  If I enable Time Machine without erasing the Time Capsule will it ask me if I want to erase or will it simply begin another set of back up data leaving the previous backups intact?
    Thank you!

If you had used Setup Assistant or Migration Assistant to put your data back, Time Machine would do an "incremental" backup, of what's new or changed.
Since you didn't, TM doesn't realize the erased disk has most of the same stuff as before, and will treat your Mac's internal HD as a different one, and will do a new, full backup of it.  You cannot prevent that.  (If your backups were on an external HD, you could make it "associate" the backups with the "new" disk, but that doesn't work on network backups for some reason.)
So your best bet is probably to erase the TC's internal HD.
If it's quite large, however, you may not have to.  If it's at least 2.2 times the size of what's on your internal HD, there will be room for a new backup.

  • How to Perform a Clean Install of Panther 10.3

I am currently running Jaguar 10.2.8 (no OS9) on an iMac G3/400, 320 megs ram, dsl internet. I want to perform a clean install of Panther 10.3 (not the upgrade or archive + install). After placing the first Panther disc in the slot, I get a screen on which I click the install icon, I then click the restart, the machine reboots, gives me an installation screen asking me to choose the language, I choose English, then click "continue", I then get a screen telling me I cannot install OSX because the "firmware" is not up to date. I then have to click on the "close" button, then use a pin to get the cd out of the machine. I thought the only firmware update necessary was when you want to install Jaguar over OS9. How can I fix this situation so I can install Panther? I am not much of a techie, fairly new to Mac so please make your reply easy to follow. Thanks.

The firmware update for your model is required for running OS X regardless of which version you install. You will need to install OS 9.1 or later in order to install the firmware update if the computer has not been updated.
OS 9 should have been included with the computer as part of the original software that came with it. You can install OS 9 on the same volume on which OS X is currently installed or you can erase the drive before installing OS 9. After you perform the firmware update you can do an Erase and Install of Panther.
You should avoid using a pin to forcibly remove a disc from the optical drive. Just restart the computer and hold down the mouse button to have the disc ejected. See the following:
Five ways to eject a stuck CD or DVD from the optical drive
Ejecting the stuck disc can usually be done in one of the following ways:
    1. Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the left mouse button until the disc ejects.
    2. Press the Eject button on your keyboard.
    3. Click on the Eject button in the menubar.
    4. Press COMMAND-E.
    5. If none of the above work try this:
Open the Terminal application in your Utilities folder. At the prompt enter or paste the following:
    /usr/bin/drutil eject.
If this fails then try this:
Boot the computer into single-user mode. At the prompt enter the same command as used above. To restart the computer enter "reboot" at the prompt without quotes.
