I mistakenly deleted an important text conversation - swiping and deleting the wrong conversation.   My iphone is backed up to icloud, but not on my conputer. Are there steps I can take to restore the deleted text messages from the icloud backup? If so what are they and where will I find the restored messages after the process?   Any help would be very much appreciated.

As for the actual process, the most recent back up was prior to my deletion.   Three last questions (I hope...):
1) How will I know what I need to redownload from itunes?

Generally, you can't but... try sending a text to the person and see if some of their conversation(s) returns. I've seen this happen a few times.

I would recommend signing out of iMessage or turning this feature off on your iPad. You can sign out of iMessage by selecting Settings > Messages > Send & Receive > Select Your Apple ID > Sign Out. Or you can turn off iMessage by selecting Settings > Messages and turn iMessage off.

Is it possible to do with out using a computer. If possible I'd like to recover the messages using my iPhone.

If the backup is made after the messages were deleted, then you won't be able to get them back via an iTunes restore. However, you may be able to use a third-party program to look at the backup made after the messages were deleted and see what information about those messages is recoverable.
One program, the one I work on, is called Decipher TextMessage. Our software will scan the text-message database and show you what information (whole and incomplete) was found that has been previously deleted. We've had a lot of success helping folks recover their deleted text messages -- it doesn't always work 100% since we're at the mercy of how the database works but it's worth a shot to see what you can find!

Somebody deleted a string of text messages from my iPhone 5 and I want to know if they can be retrieved and if so how? I'm new to the iPhone as this is my first apple product. SMS text messages are backed up with the iPhone - whether it's locally or to iCloud. If you've already written over the backup that had them (as in, backed up after the delete) then they're gone.
If you still have a backup available from a time where you had the messages on your iPhone, all you have to do is erase the iPhone and restore from that backup.
"Retrieve deleted messages from iPhone" is simple as pie.

Because you are choosing an Contact ID (iPhone Number or Apple ID) that is either not registered or currently unavailable.
A iPhone away from WiFi connection may also be out of range of it's Cell/mobile Service. (Or Switched Off or in Airplane Mode).
An iPad may not be on a Wifi Network at present. (or run out of Power)
You may know a Buddy's email and it may also be an Apple ID but that does not mens that they have "registered" it for iMessages.

Press and hold any of the apps and after a couple of seconds or so they should start to shake. Then press the 'x' in the top left corner to delete the ones that you don't want, and when you've finished deleting press the home button so as to stop the shaking. If you don't get the 'x' on any of the apps that you've downloaded (you can't delete built-in apps) then check that Settings > General > Restrictions > Deleting Apps isn't set 'off'
