How do I refresh wireless network list?

I own a MacBook Pro and I noticed recently that when I switch on my access point AFTER booting OSX my home WEP wireless network won't show up in the network list and thus the airport does not connect. I have to switch airport off and then back on to find the network, and then all works fine.
Is there any way to tell airport to "refresh" the network list, or is any option defining how often to check for networks in range?
Maurizio
Macbook Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

Thanks, I believe I found the solution following your suggestion.
Actually I did not want to choose the option you mentioned since I wanted Airport to try to connect to open network if it doesen't find a preferred one.
However I found out that my airport option "By default join:" was set to Automatic. I believed it mean Airport tries to connect to the last network used, and thus had to connect to my home network as I wanted but, as I explainde above, it did not refresh the network list. Can't figure out why.
Instead changing that to "Preferred networks" and using the option "Ask before joining an open network" did the trick. Now Airport finds any network in the preferred list almost instantly, and otherwise asks if I want to use an open one.

  • Reload wireless network list

    Hello,
NetworkManager seems not reloading correctly my network list.
Sometimes I see twice my network point (one with WEP encryption but now I've changed to WPA2) and if I turn off my router, I still see my network
Also the strength of the signal is not always updated if I move with my laptop.
How can I reload the network list.
I don't mind doing command line
    Thank you

    O.K. Then doe these steps.
    1. Turn off the Airport card!
    2. Open System Preferences->Network.
    3. Delete the Airport connection in the left hand column.
    4. Immediately reboot.
    5. Open System Preferences->Network and in the left hand column hit the + sign and re-add the Airport card.
    6. Immediately reboot again.
    7. Upon the restart open System Preferences->Network and rejoin your wireless network.
Please don't panic and remember to reboot after the deletion and re-adding of the Airport card. Just remember when in the Network pane to add the Airport Icon in the menu bar again. Plus when in the Network pane also look at the top of the pane for "Location". Use the pull-down to create a custom Location callin git whatever you want, then hit the 'Apply' button.
    Good Luck.

  • How do I restrict wireless network access to specific devices/computers, using an Airport Extreme, when the WPA2 password is able to be found by other devices?

I have set up a wireless network in my office using a couple of Airport Extremes, and, for some reason, our Windows computers are able to view the password of the network. Well, given that we employ teenagers, you can imagine what happens when they all find out the password. We want to restrict network access to only those devices we deem necessary. How do I accomplish this?

You can keep using your Apple routers as AP devices.. but get a router running a secure OS as the actual router that controls the network..
If you have 18-20 teens on the network.. then setting quota and restrictions on bandwidth is far more important than time..
Gargoyle on a cheap router can do it.. eg WNDR3800 or the newer W1024ND v2.
Simply turn off the wireless in these devices.. and use the ethernet connection to the airport as WAP.
Honestly you just will never get the security or control using apple domestic routers.

  • Macbookpro was stolen/recovered - how to track accessed wireless networks?

    Hi All,
I have a MacBook Pro that was stolen and then recovered weeks later from someone who was not the original thief... Is there a way to find out the names of wireless networks accessed in hopes this would lead to the ID of the original thief? I've been looking at Console log under Diagnostic and Usage Messages, and here I can see exactly when the machine tries to autojoin wireless networks that have been remembered (and this is very useful), but wondering if I can find out the actual name of the network(s) joined in the hours after the laptop was stolen from me.
Thanks for any info you can provide!
For example - does this log below provide any revealing info?

Try the following to see if this will provide some information:
Open System Preferences (gear icon) on the dock
    Open Network
Click on the AirPort connection on the left of the window
Click Advanced at the lower right
A list of previously joined networks will appear if the option to remember networks has been checked...unless this information has been deleted.

  • HT3231 How long migrate via wireless network?

How long does it normally take to migrate all data from one Mac to another via a wireless network?

It may, depending on the configuration of your Network Preferences.
If you're about to give up on wireless anyway, try plugging in the cable and then turn off AirPort by clicking one of the computer's WiFi menus and selecting "Turn Wi-Fi Off". Migration Assistant will probably pause for a moment or two, after which it will either continue at a faster rate or simply give up. In the latter case you will have to start it again.
When you do leave Wi-Fi "off" to ensure it uses the wired connection.

  • Filtering Wireless Networks List

    Hi
is there a way to prevent some wireless networks to appear on the list of available networks? (the list you can see from the airport icon on the menu bar). i would like to exclude my neighbors wireless networks..
    Thanks

Does it list a hidden network? No. Moreover it wouldn't be listed by netsh command in such case. It is possible to create a manual wireless connection. The side effect is that such SSID appears on the networks list all the time, even when not broadcasting. It is supposed to work as any other access point (confirmed on another Windows 8.1 machine with non-Broadcom wifi). I also used WirelessNetView but haven't found anything special.

  • How to Join a wireless network in 7.6.4

After I upgrade my Airport Express (Flat White) to 7.6.4 the option to "Join a Wireless Network" dissapear only show Create and Expand a Wireless Network How I can Join to an existent Wireless Network?
    Best Regards

FWIW ... I just upgraded the firmware on my 2nd gen 802.11n AirPort Express base station from 7.6.2 to 7.6.4 and I still found the "Join a wireless network" option available in the AirPort Utility.
I am using AirPort Utility v5.6 on OS X Mountain Lion. This option becomes available ONLY by holding down the Option key before making a Wireless Mode selection. This was true before the upgrade.

  • How to specify default wireless networks?

I'm using a MacBook with a generic wireless 802.11g router in a location in which there are a lot of wireless networks. My wireless network is secured.
Whenever I open the MacBook, it tries to connect to other open networks, but not mine. And once I manually connect it to mine, it sometimes disconnects after 5 minutes of idle time.
Where in the Mac OS can I specify which network I want it to connect to (or not connect to), and have control over stuff like that?

Open the Network control panel and select Airport and then configure. Right below the TCP/IP, PPPoe, AppleTalk tabs you'll see By Default Join...and it will probably say Automatic. Click on the popup menu and select Preferred Networks. Select your preferred networks and you are good to go.

Sorry, that Wi-Fire didn't solve the problem. The issue, most likely, is Wi-Fi interference due to building construction material between the 7th & 9th floors. I would know of only two other options: 1) Run Ethernet between the floors, or 2) Employ Powerline adapters which take advantage of the building's AC circuit.
For the second option, you would need a minimum of two adapter, one for near the router on the 9th floor and the second near your computer on the 7th. An Ethernet patch cord would then be connected between the 9th floor router and the first adapter, and a second patch cable connected between the second adapter & your computer.

I'm not sure that it does. What makes you say that? It might be that the others are on the same wireless channel as yours with a very strong signal and are interfering?

  • WRT54G - wireless network listing gives me two automatic choices.

    let me explain.
On my "view wireless networks" are I used to connect to a basic connection called Linksys. This is the SSID that the router names by default. This connection always said excellent in the signal strength area.
Yesterday I noticed my internet was disconnecting itself alot and the signal strength said low or very low with around 9-20 mbps. I looked at the wireless networks and the one I connected to was unsecured. I had secured it about 3 months ago so this confused me. I messed with a few security setting on my routers configuration page and noticed they weren't doing anything to my router.
I re named my SSID, turned the broadcasting off then back on and a new wireless network appeared. It had 54 mpbs and excellent signal strength like the one I've always had.
Heres the problem though. The "linksys" SSID automatically makes me connect to it when I log on my computer. Even after I went to advanced setting and deleted it. not only that my internet is alot slower and im getting disconnected around every 30 mins. This never happened before. I'm wondering if its possible that this myserious second network connection could be the source of my problem.
Also, my router is connecting to a 802.11G Wireless-G adapter.
sorry if the post was a bit long, wanted to eliminate all variables.

As I understand , You have your new Network configured on
the Router, with a new SSID Name, and WEP Key.
Then You could try this :
Powercycle the Router for 20 Seconds. Restart the Wireless
Computer.Once the Computer has restarted, [ if it's a Windows
    XP System ] , click ' start ', type services.msc, press return,
you could find Services - Local Screen . Scroll down, and find
Wireless Zero Configuration, Right click on it, click restart.
Once done, Close all the Screens, click ' start ' Navigate to
Control Panel, Go to Network Connections, Right Click on
Wireless Network Connection, and select Properties.
You find three Tabs  - General , Wireless Networks and
Advanced, don't you ? Click on Wireless Networks,
Check ' Use Windows to configure the Wireless Network
Settings ' and down below, Under Preferred Networks,
Highlight each of the names individually, and click remove.
Once done, Click OK, Right click on Wireless Network
Connection, Select ' View Available Networks '
Select the name you 've had configured on the Router,
    Click Connect,
Type in the WEP Key, the 10 Digit Number,
    Confirm it,
Once Connected, Check the Online Connectivity.
From now on, the Computer will consider your network
as the Most Preferred Network to associate with..
Kindly try this, and if the Problem persists, send a text
    across for any further assistance
    Thanking you,
    Shriraj.

  • Struggling with connectivity...how do I refresh my network?

Hey, i own the wireless wrt54g router. I currently have 3 pcs connected to this network and an xbox 360. One PC is using wireless, and the others are wired. For some reason, i randomly get disconnected from the internet, and at other times the connection is very slow. My ISP is Optimum Online, one of the more faster providers. I heard with routers and networks you need to refresh the connection by unplugging a few things every month or so. Any help appreciated!

Hey what's the version of your WRT54G? Checking your router model and version
BTW, please be informed that when you share your Internet with many computers, it is bound that your Internet bandwidth will be distributed to the computers that uses the Internet connection. That other computers in the network may experience slow Internet access, especially when one or more computers do heavy downloads (example: BitTorrent).

  • How can I have wireless network in my new notebook

I bought a MacBook Pro but am unable to join Wi-Fi Network at home.  They are asking to enter the network password.  Where do I find that?

It depends what you mean by network password, if it is the ISP account then follow mvest20's advice, if it is your wifi signal that you need to connect to, it will be whatever you set that to when you setup the wifi router, failing that some routers have the password printed on them.
