How do I reinstall Snow Leopard while keeping Windows 7?

Hi
The subject says it all. I want to make a clean install of Snow Leopard(SL) on my iMac which already has a Boot Camp partition that I don't want to mess up. Is it as simple as just reformat the OS X partition and install SL there or do I have to do some 'fancy' tricks to make this happen?
Thanks for any tips or links to guides and so on.

Hi,
reinstalling SL (or even upgradeing to it from a previous OSX version) usually does not affect your BootCamp Windows at all.
Nonetheless, to be on the safe side it is always best to have/make a backup of your Windows on an external harddisk prior to the SL installation.
The SL installation and setup guide can be found here http://www.apple.com/support/snowleopard/

  • How do I install Snow Leopard while keeping files, applications, and settings

    I need to update my system, I realized that I need Snow Leopard (quiet late) before Maverick. My question is, how can I install it keeping files and all the data. I found this on Internet, does it work?
    Install Snow Leopard while keeping files, applications, and settings
    If you follow these steps, the installer will replace your operating system if one is already present, but will preserve your account information and personal files.  You may have to reinstall some applications, however.
    Insert the install disc (or the first install disc if you have more than one) into your disc drive. Restart your computer while holding down the c key. This causes your computer to start up from the install disc rather than your hard drive. When you see the gray Apple insignia, release c .
    The Mac OS X installer should open automatically. Follow the on-screen prompts to read and accept the license agreement and begin the installation. When prompted to choose a destination disk, select your preferred location and click Install.
    When the Mac OS X installation finishes with the disc, restart your computer. After the installation completes, a configuration program may begin automatically if you are installing for the first time. You will need to supply basic setup information for your computer.
    Update your system software to ensure that you have the most recent operating system components.  From the Apple menu, select Software Update... , and then follow the instructions on the screen. Often, you will have to restart your computer, and you may have to run Software Update multiple times before it can completely update your system.

    That's why you need to back it up. You won't need to restore the backup immediately afterwards unless something goes wrong during the upgrade, but you'll need it later; the drive will eventually fail.

  • How do I reinstall Snow Leopard Server on a Mac Mini Server 2010?

    How do I reinstall Snow Leopard Server on a Mac Mini Server 2010? I have already attached a Mac Superdrive and tried to download, but the buttons at the bottom of the dialog screen are greyed out.

    Not sure where you're getting tangled here or how much you know about OS X Server 10.6, so...
    AFAIK, Snow Leopard Server wasm't available as a download, it was a separate DVD distribution.
    Unlike more recent versions of OS X Server, the 10.6 server distributions were usually standalone DVD disks, as well.
    (There is a slight wrinkle if your Mac needs a newer version of 10.6 than your server distribution; there was a different streaming upgrade process for that.  IIRC, the appropriate OS X client version was installed first, then you booted that client version and loaded the DVD and installed OS X Server.)
    But if you have a Snow Leopard Server distribution that supports your particular Mac Mini model, then boot the DVD, use Disk Utility from the Utilities menu in the bootable DVD environment, wipe the disk, and then install OS X Server.
    You'll need a 10.6 license key, if you don't already have that.
    FWIW, here are the available manuals.

  • How can I reinstall Snow Leopard?

    How can I reinstall Snow Leopard?

    Jan,
    You can use the Disk Utility "app" to partition your hard drive so that you can (clean) install Snow Leopard on the new partition. This leaves Mountain Lion intact on one partition. This worked great for me. I was becoming increasingly annoyed, seeing that Mountain Lion ***** due, as another poster said, to its "increasing iOSification".
    With Disk Utility you can name the new partition "Macintosh HD 2". Be sure to use the exact same format as the original (Macintosh HD) partition. You can access all your files/apps on the old (ML) partition from the new (SL) partition, and vice versa.
    However, know this:
    I still have NOT found a way to transfer any my OS X Mail folders from Mountain Lion BACK TO Snow Leopard. Mountain Lion's Mail gives you the false impression you can export your Mail folders to Snow Leopard's Mail, but you cannot. From what I've read here, the newest version of OS X Mail is not compatible with earlier versions. This is a HUGE problem.
    My short list (to date) of crappy Mountain Lion behavior; items marked with a double asterisk (**)represent the worst of Mountain Lion for me.
    ** No up/down arrows in scroll bar slider;
    Expose` not as easy to navigate as in Snow Leopard;
    Mail does not request passwords for either receive or send;
    No "Save Draft" icon in Mail compose window;
    "Save As" selection missing in most app menus;
    No separate Search window in Safari (workaround: use Firefox or Opera);
    ** Can't export Mail from Mountain Lion into Snow Leopard if downgrading;
    iWork 09 seems to have "circled the wagons" re compatibility with MS Office or LibreOffice (workaround: just use Libreoffice);
    I truly regret "upgrading" to Apple's "Vista".

  • How do I reinstall Snow Leopard on an erased MacBook?

    I think I did something stupid. I used the Disk Utility Tool from a booted Snow Leopard installation disk to erase my Mac partition. I needed to erase all old data. My Windows XP partition works fine. My previous Mac partition still exists but has nothing on it. At first I thought the installation disk was bad. However, I have gotten through about 10 minutes of the installation several times, but I keep getting an error saying it is unable to copy files for the installation. I have used the booted installation Disk Utility to repair the partition a couple of times and everything runs OK. I no longer have the orignial restore disks so that is out as an option unless I can find them or some to borrow that happen to match this MacBook. Again, the machine was running fine until I decided to do a clean installation the way I did. I have since discovered from the Apple Web site that I should after run the installation from the same session where I zero-erased the partition. Thanks. In over 20 years of using and supporting Macs I have not seen this problem before.

    Lyssa:
    Thanks for your quick response. I am sorry for taking so long to give feedback. You were sort of right, but I never could boot from a different optical drive. However, your idea reinforced an idea we have been kicking around.
    With firewire, I teathered my MacBook Pro (with Snow Leopard) to the leopardless MacBook. (Remember the MacBook did have two functioning partitions and the Boot Camp partition was working fine. The Mac partition had been erased.)
    With the MacBook off, I booted the MacBook Pro and inserted the Snow Leopard installation disk. Then I powered on the MacBook while holding down the T key. The two MacBook partitions jumped up on my MacBook Pro and I started the installation from disk to the troubled MacBook Mac partition. The installation was quick and flawless.
    I still don't know if my built-in DVD drive has a problem. It might.
    Whatever the cause, now it works. Thanks for sharing your ideas and giving me a push to try some other out-of-the-MacBook solutions.

  • How do I reinstall Snow Leopard without the discs?

    I need to change my hard drive and reinstall Mac OS X. I can't install Lion obviously because I first need a platform. I got my MacBook from a relative, but she sent it to me with MacBook Pro installation discs. I tried using them, but every time it says, "Mac OS X can't be installed on this computer," which I don't know why that'd be. Since I don't have the necessary installation discs, how do I reinstall the OS?

    FIrst, you may want to back up your system to an external HD, then restore it when the disk is replaced.  If you use the Restore tab of Disk Utility (see #7 in Using Disk Utility), or the 3rd-party CarbonCopyCloner or SuperDuper apps, you can start up from the "clone" and restore back to the new disk.
    If you use Time Machine for backups, you'll need a Snow Leopard disc to restore them.
    But you will probably need a Snow Leopard disc that will boot your Mac sooner or later anyway.
    Note that the retail disc only has the default Apple apps; no iLife or iWork apps.
    If the Mac came with Snow Leopard, call AppleCare.  They'll send a duplicate set of the original discs (including iLife) for a nominal fee.
    If the Mac came with Leopard, and iLife wasn't upgraded, get the original Leopard disks (with iLife) and a retail Snow Leopard disc.

  • Can I reinstall Snow Leopard while having Lion OSX removed?

    I have a question which relates to Windows Home Server (HP MediaSmart EX 490 with Mac support for Time Machine).
    I bought my MacBook Pro with Snow Leopard and worked the updates all the way up to 10.6.7 or 10.6.8 (can't recall which) before testing out the developer version of OS X Lion.  I now realize that Lion makes the WHS Time Machine backup functionality null and void.  Is there a way I can roll back the OS?  Should I use a Bare Metal reinstall?  I am very afraid that I might lose my data on my MBP if I do a Bare Metal restore.  I am not an experienced Mac user and any expert help would be greatly appreciated.
    (Also, how will I re-update Snow Leopard to the latest version?  Should I just buy the latest OS DVD from an Apple Store?)
    Thanks in advance,
    markerline

    If your NAS doesn't work with Lion, contact the maker for an update.
    You should have access to the Developer forums; someone there should be able to help.
    You should be able to do a full system restore of your last Snow Leopard backup, per #14 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions, if your NAS allows full restores (some don't).   That will, of course, erase any data you've added or changes you've made since then.  You might be able to selectively restore such items via the "Star Wars" display, per #15 in that same link, but the Snow Leopard version of some apps may not work with the Lion data formats.

  • How do I reinstall Snow Leopard or???

    I have an old Mac Pro about 8 years old and want to set it up to watch Netflix only. We installed Yosemite and it's very slow and stalls a lot or when buffering on Netflix. I think we'd be better with the last version or one back. Can't remember all the names now. But it did fine back then. Anyway, how can I put the OS that was on their back on?
    The serial number is: RM*****VJ0 is that helps you find any info that would help you answer the question. I do have the CD for Snow Leopard. Can I do it without a LOT of trouble?

    Clean Install of Snow Leopard
    Be sure to make a backup first because the following procedure will erase
    the drive and everything on it.
         1. Boot the computer using the Snow Leopard Installer Disc or the Disc 1 that came
             with your computer.  Insert the disc into the optical drive and restart the computer.
             After the chime press and hold down the  "C" key.  Release the key when you see
             a small spinning gear appear below the dark gray Apple logo.
         2. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue
             button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
             After DU loads select the hard drive entry from the left side list (mfgr.'s ID and drive
             size.)  Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.  Set the number of
             partitions to one (1) from the Partitions drop down menu, click on Options button
             and select GUID, click on OK, then set the format type to MacOS Extended
             (Journaled, if supported), then click on the Apply button.
         3. When the formatting has completed quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed
             with the OS X installation and follow the directions included with the installer.
         4. When the installation has completed your computer will Restart into the Setup
             Assistant. After you finish Setup Assistant will complete the installation after which
             you will be running a fresh install of OS X.  You can now begin the update process
             by opening Software Update and installing all recommended updates to bring your
             installation current.
    Download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1.

  • How do I reinstall Snow Leopard?

    I have read many discussions on this, but have been unable to resolve this.  Using a disc that reads "17-inch MacBook Pro Mac OS X Install DVD", I was able to boot to it and access the Disk Utility to format and partition the hard drive.  However, when I use this same disc and boot to it, it says that OS X cannot be installed.  I also have what appears to be a retail disc with the snow leopard on the case, "Mac OS X Snow Leopard Installation, features and refinements".  When I try to boot to that, it just sits at the grey screen with the Apple logo in the middle, never going anywhere else.
    What are my options here?

    Right, because the 17" disk is a model specific version and it doesn't match your model with the correct hardwar drivers.
    It will alow you to use Disk Utility, but that's it. Because DU is the same across the same operating system version.

    That disk will only boot Intel Mac's that came with 10.4 - 10.6.2 originally from the factory.
    If your Mac originally came with 10.6.3 or later, then you need machine specific versions you call Apple to get them but you need to know your serial number at least.
    Need machine/operating system identification help?
    Find the serial number, thus the model number and thus gives the operating system that originally came with the machine. However gives not what operating system version the boot drive was later upgraded to. Do not use older OS X verisons to repair newer verisons. It is possible to use the original operating system version installed on another boot drive to recover files from a later operating system non-booting drive.

  • Fail to reinstall snow leopard on my 2011 MBP(MC723LL/A)

    Hi all,
       I don't have the original DVD with me. Recently I accidently deleted some files and can't log into the system again. I actually downloaded snow leopard 10.6.3 retial and burned it into a flash drive using another old MBP. This bootable usb can work on the old MBP, but cannot work on my 2011 MBP. Is it because 10.6.3 is too old? How could I reinstall snow leopard to my 2011 MBP without the DVD?
       Many thanks!

    The processor is 2.2GHz quad-core Intel Core i7, maybe because of this.

  • How do I keep programs such as Word when I wipe my hard drive to reinstall Snow Leopard?

    I am having serious issues with Lion. Even after the update, I lose WiFi, my mailbox crashes, Word crashes without saving a backup, and it has just been a very distasteful experience. I talked with Apple, and they couldn't help me resolve issues beyond telling me to bring it in or reinstall. I am choosing to reinstall Snow Leopard. I am going to wipe my hard drive clean and start over. Could someone tell me how to keep programs such as Office '11 though? I am currently at school and I didn't bring my Office software with me to reinstall, so how could I save it? I can't really do a time capsule since I am running Lion and I want to reinstall Snow Leopard.

    If you are going to wipe the disk then you will have to reinstall the software.
    You can't have your cake and eat it also.

  • I have a mid 2010 Macbook Pro running Snow Leopard and foolishly upgraded to Yosemite.  Is it possible to go back in time with Time Machine and reinstall Snow Leopard.  Then upgrade to Lion or Mavericks?  Any other ideas on how I can exit Yosemite?

    I have a mid 2010 Macbook Pro running Snow Leopard and foolishly upgraded to Yosemite. Now have numerous problems.  Is it possible to go back in time with Time Machine and reinstall Snow Leopard?  Then upgrade to Lion or Mavericks?  Any other ideas on how I can exit Yosemite?

    Once you get yourself back to Snow Leopard, if you still want to upgrade somewhat, I would suggest the following:
    1. Get an external hard drive that you can use for experiments with new OS versions. You could partition it into 2 or 3 partitions. You could then clone your existing Snow Leopard system to one partition using Carbon Copy Cloner (well worth $40) or SuperDuper ($25).
    2. Buy OS X Mountain Lion for $20, through the Apple online store (I don't think it's available through the App Store). Apple has decided to make it very difficult for anyone to get Mavericks unless they have already downloaded it.
    You will receive two e-mails from Apple, one containing a PDF with a redemption code, and one with the password you will need to unlock the PDF. Using the code, you will download Mountain Lion from the App Store, where it will appear among your Purchased items.
    After ML finishes downloading, its installer app will launch itself. When you see this launch screen, QUIT the install app immediately! Go to your applications folder, find the Install OS X Mountain Lion app, and copy it to a safe location outside of your Applications folder. Keeping one or more copies will allow you to reinstall without unnecessary aggravation if you later need or want to do that. At this point, you can re-launch the Installer in the Applications folder and let it run. You can install it on a clean partition on your external HD, or you can allow it to upgrade the Snow Leopard clone you created on your external drive, or you can do both. This should allow you to test how everything works for as long as you like.
    3. If you left yourself a free partition on your test drive, try a clean install of Yosemite and set everything up from scratch (do not migrate anything). This will allow you to see whether your problems with it were related to something in your Snow Leopard system.

    It would be easier to just fix whatever is making your machine slow.
    I wrote a little diagnostic program to help show what might be causing these problems. Download EtreCheck from http://www.etresoft.com/download/EtreCheck.zip, run it, and paste the results here.
