How do I restore Automated Help from a Device/thumbdrive?

I re-installed Yosemite fresh after upgrading to a new hard drive and then migrated all my files over.  However, the automated help file did not come over.  So I went to a website that had a collection of the files:  https://github.com/upekkha/AppleHardwareTest
There is found the correct version of the hardware test for my Macbook and then download a dmg file that created a device on my desktop (similar to when you plug in a thumbdrive) from which I could restore the .diagnostic file.  I don't have hidden files turned on so I can see it in the folder but its the right directory structure:  System/Library/CoreServices.  The website says to restore this file but I don't know how to do that.  I can't copy it without changing the set up to show hidden files, which I don't want to do and I am not sure that's the right way to do it.  So what is the easiest way to restore that to the Coreservices folder on my computer?  I could copy it to a thumbdrive if need be as well.  I have used the terminal but not real familiar with syntax so if I have to copy it that way please provide the exact syntax.  The full name of the device created on my desktop is:  "AHTBThree/System/Library/CoreServices/".  It appears as though there is nothing showing in Coreservices folder but as noted it is because the file is hidden.

Well I figured it out so let me give step by step instructions in case anyone else has the same issue whereby you Apple Diagnostics file is missing or corrupted.
First, you need to start terminal and enter the following command, which will make hidden files visible (don't worry you can change it back by giving the same command and substituting "FALSE" for "TRUE" once you are finished):
defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles TRUE
Then go to this site:  https://github.com/upekkha/AppleHardwareTest  to find the missing or corrupted ".diagnostics" folder.  As explained there, run EACH of these commands separately to determine the correct model and board number:
sysctl hw.model | awk '{ print $2 }'
ioreg -l | grep board-id | awk -F\" '{ print $4 }'
The first will give you the model of your Mac (in my case, "Macbook 7,1") and the second will give you the board number (in my case, Mac-F22C89C8).  With those two identifiers you find your particular Mac product heading in bold on the page ((in my case a MacBook) and click or double click on the matching model and board number combination--this will download the ".diagnostics" folder you need including the complete folder structure (i.e., "System/Library/CoreServices/" in my case).  Navigate to the ".diagnostics" folder and copy it to the corresponding folder on your Mac (i.e., "System/Library/CoreServices/") in my case.  Then follow the instructions here:  Using Apple Diagnostics - Apple Support.

  • HELP! How can i restore/recover files from Bootcamp with Boot Failure - Missing operating system error?

    Hi,
I am having a few problems with bootcamp on my imac. When i tried to move the bootcamp partition on windows 7 into free space, it crashed and turned off. Ever since i have had the error 'Missing operating system' and it fails to boot. I have some very important files on the bootcamp partition. Is it possible to recover these files or even to restore the bootcamp partition to it's original state? I do not have a backup of my bootcamp partition. Another problem i have is that ever since i tried to expand my macintosh HD partition into free space, when i hold alt while booting up (to choose which partition to boot like i normally do), the bootcamp partition has stopped appearing. This means that i cannot even boot the windows 7 bootcamp partition anymore!
So basically here are my 2 questions:
How can i restore/recover files from Bootcamp with Boot Failure - Missing operating system error?
How can i make the Bootcamp partition appear in Startup Disk and when i hold the option key while starting up my computer to allow me to boot windows 7?
Any solutions are very much apreciated!
    Thanks!
I know that bootcamp (disk0s4) hasn't been fully deleted since it appears in disk utility (i cant do anything to it though)
And here is the error i see when i try to launch bootcamp (back when i was actually able to boot up bootcamp to the error screen)

WinClone 3 is OS X and saves Windows image it makes for restore - that should work but you will have to try and you would need to make a new image unless it also works with a native Windows system restore image. It is now supported and has come a long way.

Paragon Clone OS works and does disk-to-disk clone just like CCC you end up with two bootable drives. But does not work with your setup. It would let you clone and move your Windows install to an SSD or another disk drive though and be bootable.
During its clone process it checks for errors which is very helpful and lets you know - something CCC and others should adopt more of.

I wish for our/my sake you had re-read and rewritten the long 'story' and broken it into a brief list of facts we needed.
    OS X
    Windows
Backup (though external is much safer) and you want bootable OS X clones as well as TimeMachine

There are a number of things to do like chkdsk and others as well as Windows DVD to do automatic system repairs and find out why.
AppleHFS - the abilty to mount and read HFS volumes can be notorious.
I would rearrange and redo your storage setup and how you use the 4-5 internal hard drive bays.

Hi,disc wiped ,OSX10.9 back on ,how do I restore my data from external hard drive ?Any help welcome .

There's Setup Assistant and Migration Assistant. The cleanest way to do it is Setup Assistant, but you only get that option once when you fire up a fresh install of OSX. If you're past that, you could reinstall OSX by booting with Command-R, or you could use Migration Assistant.

  • How can I restore my data from a backup with different Phone name?

I recently had to restore my iphone which erased all the data. I have a backup of that data in iTunes and I want to restore it to the phone. However when I connected the phone to iTunes the first time after resetting everything, I accidently chose to create a new phone instead of restore settings and data from the backup.
My question is, how can I restore the iPhone from this previous backup? My iPhone is currently called "untitled playlist" and the backup is called "JC's iPhone".
    Thanks,
    Jeremy
ps. Sorry for posting twice. Nobody responded the first time, probably because I had a poor subject.

    Jeremy,
If you restore again, you will be prompted to choose a backup or setup as a new phone again. Then you can just choose your old backup.
    Hope this helps,
    Jennifer B.

  • How do I "restore" a Mailbox from an archive?

I know how to Archive a Mailbox (Mail > Mailbox > Archive Mailbox > choose a location to store the archive file) and it works.
But how do I restore a Mailbox from this archived file? I have not found ANY reference in the help menu about what to do with an archived mailbox and what it should be good for.
I'd appreciate any pointers to understand this archiving business better. Thanks and cheers, Veit

Again, VK, how helpful that was.
The reason that I could not find the "Import mailbox" feature: I looked in the Mailbox tab, where one would expect it to be.
Thanks for the solution, it worked perfectly.
By the way: What is the difference between these three Mailboxes?:
    Inbox>Veit (i.e. my first name)
that's the inbox for your email account. you evidently called it Viet.
(I also have one for my wife and for an old POP account) and
    On My Mac, and
    Veit
that's just a local mailbox in "on my mac" section called Viet. it's not tied to any account and exists only on your computer.
Let me know if you can enlighten me there.
    Cheers,

  • How do I restore one contact from my Time Machine?

How do I restore one contact from my Time Machine?

    From Time Machine Help:
Restore items backed up with Time Machine
If you use Time Machine to back up your Mac, you can easily bring back lost items or recover older versions of files.
You can use Time Machine within many apps. If the iCloud Documents & Data feature is turned on, you can recover older versions of iCloud documents as well as regular documents.
Open a window for the item you want to restore. For example, if you accidentally deleted a file from your Documents folder, open the Documents folder. To recover an email message, open your inbox in Mail. To recover an iCloud document, open the document’s app, choose File > Open, then click iCloud to view the iCloud documents for that app.
If you’re missing an item from the desktop, you don’t need to open a window.
From the Time Machine menu in the menu bar, choose Enter Time Machine. A message may appear while your Mac connects to the backup disk.
Use the arrows and timeline to browse the snapshots and backups.White tick marks represent snapshots stored on your internal drive (portable computers only). Pink tick marks represent backups stored on your backup disk. If a tick mark appears dimmed or grayed, there’s no backup available or the backup disk is not connected.
For more information about an item, double-click it.The windows in Time Machine behave just like Finder windows, so you can open folders, click items in the sidebar, and use the search field in the upper-right corner of the window.
When you find the item you want to restore, select it, then click Restore. You can restore individual items, multiple items, folders, or your entire hard disk. The restored item is returned to its original location. For example, if the item was found in the Documents folder, it is returned to the Documents folder.
Many apps let you use Time Machine within individual documents so you can examine and read the document’s past versions to find the version you want. For more information, see:

  • How do I restore camera roll from a previous backup

My wife's iphone was full so I looked how to delete many, many camera roll pictures without having to do them individually. I found out how to do it (not intuitive at all by the way) but I did it wrong, deleted her camera roll and  photostream.  Lost about 300 pics.  I backup the iphone to my computer so I'm thinking the camera roll has to be there in a previous backup.  How do I restore camera roll from a backup, at least 5 backups ago?
It's not fun sleeping the garage.  Help!
    Thanks,
    Art

    Thanks for the response.
Her phone is always backed up to the computer so I believe there is a backup prior to removing the pics.  I'm trying to find out how to go to an older backup to restore so I can find the camera roll pics.

    Hi Diovizor,
Make sure that you do not use [http://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/Clear%20Recent%20History Clear Recent History] to clear the 'Browsing History' when you close Firefox.
Also please make sure that you not run Firefox in (permanent) Private Browsing mode.
You enter Private Browsing mode if you select: Preferences > Privacy > History: Firefox will: "Never Remember History"
To see all History and Cookie settings, choose: Preferences > Privacy > History: Firefox will: Use custome settings for history. Uncheck "Always use permanent Private Browsing mode"

I lost all my contacts. How do i restore my phone from an icloud backup?

I tried to restore from the cloud today after my contacts disappeared.  I went to Settings-ICloud-Contacts and turned off my contacts.  Now the phone is stuck on "Turning off contacts."  Apple wants my serial number, etc., to help, but I can't get that info from my phone because....it's stuck on "Turning off contacts!"  I really hate IOS 7.

How can I restore my data from iCal? I didn't make any backup, but I use  time machine with an external HD. I deleted iCal when I deleted my gmail account. I have tried to restore, but I can only restore the iCal software and not the data.

    So what is your question?
If you forgot your encryption password:
Warning: Make sure it's a password you will remember or write it down for safekeeping. If you encrypt an iPhone backup in iTunes and forget your password, you can't restore from backup and your data will be unrecoverable.
If you can't remember the password and want to start again, you must perform a full software restore and chooseset up as a new device when iTunes prompts you to select the backup from which to restore.

  • How can I restore iCloud files from my lost iPhone

I backed up my files to icloud. But I lost my Iphone last week. How can I restore my files from icloud to my macbook ?

Are you using Photostream?  If yes, then you will be able to see your 1000 most recent photos on your Mac in iPhoto.
All your contacts, calendar events, emails, etc. will still be on your Mac as part of iCloud.
If you didn't import your videos from your iPhone to your Mac, then you've lost them unless you can restore your cloud backup to another iOS device.

  • HT201272 Having a bad day my iTunes library got corrupted and my back up disk has failed how can I restore my purchases from the iTunes store

Having a bad day my iTunes library got corrupted and my back up disk has failed how can I restore my purchases from the iTunes store? When I try it tells me the pruchases have already been downloaded to this computer.

Does your purchased rmusic appears under the Purchased link under Quicklinks on the right-hand side of the iTunes store home page (music can't be re-downloaded in all countries) ? If they do and you don't have the cloud symbol against them so as to re-download them, then do you still have the entries for them in your library i.e. where you would normally click on them to play them ? If you do then try deleting them from there (iTunes will be seeing them and assuming that you still have them somewhere) and they should then get the cloud symbol for re-downloading in the Purchased link.
If you aren't in a country where music can be re-downloaded then you could try contacting iTunes support and see if they will grant you a re-download : http://www.apple.com/support/itunes/contact/ - click on Contact iTunes Store Support on the right-hand side of the page,

how do i restore my content from my phone to my itunes on a new computer

    1) authorize iTunes on the new machine for your iTunes store account(s)
    2) connect your device and right-click or control-click it in the iTunes Source list, then choose transfer purchases from the shortcut menu that appears.
    3) sync the device
iTunes will wipe the iPhone but, since you transferred your purchases in the previous step, your content will be in your library and you can re-populate the iPhone with it.
above covers your purchased content. for everything else, check out this post by Zevoneer.
