How do I restore missing itunes links by changing the drive letter?

Bought a new Windows 8 PC and moved my old XP MyMusic folder to the Win 8 Music folder.  Installed iTunes and it automatically found the music and all the music files managed by iTunes in the iTunes sub-folder work just fine.  The problem is I have many other music folders under the top level Music folder and the links to those files are broken.  They are broken because on the old PC everything was on the D drive but now they are on the C drive.
If I "Get Info" on a track I can see it is still looking for the file on the D drive.  I'd like to do a mass edit to change all the references to the D: drive to be C:.  I've been unable to find a program that will do this.  Or, is there another way?
An option might be to somehow reorganize the folder structure on the old PC and then re-copy the folders to the new PC.  I do not want to put everything into iTunes folders because that would duplicate everything and make them hard to find.  I often get content outside of iTunes, such as by recording LP's.

I'll try to double check the mechanism. There is certainly part that compares file sizes to try to ensure the correct match. If your effective media folder is the Music folder above iTunes instead of iTunes Media inside it is there is a chance that files were named by Windows Media Player in the past rather than iTunes? iTunes has different substitutions for invalid characters and limits file & folder names to 40 characters. Have you got any deeper folder nesting than <Media Folder>\<[Album ]Artist>\<Album>?
This thread shows the list of potential folders that the script will look through. In most cases there will only be a few folders from that list that match any given combination of artist, album artist and album, and in those folders even fewer files that match with the track number and name, and, in most cases, only one that has also has the correct file size.
It would be useful to have the details of a sample track that the script is failing to locate, its true location and what iTunes shows on the Get Info > Summary tab.

Hi, my Ipod Schuffle (4 gen) dissapears from windows vista right after I execute Itunes, I've change the drive letter, erase temps in App data file, verified USB drivers, etc... Can someone guide on how to solve this?

If you want the shuffle to be always visible in Windows (outside of iTunes), you need to Enable disk use.
Select the shuffle in the iTunes sidebar, under DEVICES.  Over to the right, select the Summary tab.  You should see a checkbox that says Enable disk use.  Check it and click Apply.
NOTE:  If disk use is enabled, you have to Eject the shuffle in iTunes, BEFORE you physically disconnect it.  If disk use is NOT enabled, you can disconnect the shuffle at any time, as long as iTunes is not doing something with it at that moment (such as syncing); the shuffle's light will then be blinking (to indicate DO NOT DISCONNECT).
So, unless you want to use the shuffle like a USB flash drive (carry random files on it), you may want to NOT Enable disk use.

Try doing a Ctrl-Alt-Del, and in Task Manager click on the Processes tab. End the iTunesHelper and iPodService processes. Then reconnect the iPod and go into Disk Management, and the iPod should show up. Change the drive letter to something other than C, then eject the iPod and restart the computer. When you reconnect it you should be able to get it recognized.

  • I changed the drive letter on my iPod and now iTunes won't recognize it!

Help please! I contacted an Apple associate and they told me to change the drive letter of my iPod in My Computer. I did that and now iTunes won't recognize my iPod at all and I can't change the drive letter back to the original one. What do I do?

Try Resetting Your iPod while it's connected to the computer.
Hold down the Menu and Select buttons until you see the Apple logo (or Menu & Play/Pause in older models).
This will often get it recognized. It may take several attempts.
Try closing and re-starting iTunes. There have been cases where iTunes refuses to see an iPod, but after re-starting, it works again.
Also try re-booting the entire computer. Especially if the PC has been operating for a long time &/or many programs have been opened and closed, repeatedly.
Other USB connected peripherals may be the cause as well. Try removing all connected USB items and attaching the iPod. If you have a USB keyboard, it may be worth a try using the adapter to convert it to non-USB. If the iPod connects, continue plugging things back in until you have the problem return. You may have then isolated the issue. Sometimes it could be a printer, camera, Flash Card reader, or other attached device causing a conflict.

  • How do I restore my itunes from a ext hard driver?

I have followed the instuctions I have opened both dirves (PC and ext drive) went to Users/Username/music I did a drag drop the file on the ext hard drive told it to replace the one on my PC. I dont thnk its copying it dose it intantly it shows the correct size but nothing is there. I then helf the shift key as I started itunes and seleted choose but then it dosent show up to select.
    What am I doing wrong/

If you connect an external hard drive with music, iTunes won't know the music exists there until you tell it. There are two simple ways to tell the application about the music. 1) Drag the folder(s) that contain music files onto the iTunes icon on the Dock or 2) select Add to Library from the File menu and then use the fileselector to select the drive with the music.

  • My ipod nanos are not being recognized in iTunes. I have tried everything! Changed the drive letter, the disk to FAT32, resetted it, downloaded itunes again, but nothing has worked! HELP please.

Somehow my nano now lost all its music so now its empty!  Also, before windows used to recognize my ipod and i'd get a pop up saying "open to view files" but now I don't even get that anymore. I have also tried syncing it by putting them in disk mode but NOTHING has worked. I am getting so frustrated.
I followed all of the "steps" on the apple support page but none of that has worked too. PLEASE help me because I literally feel like just throwing my ipods out the window. I never had this problem before.

When you connect your iPod to your PC, what appears on the iPod's display?  Does the iPod charge when you have it plugged into the PC?
Are you running the latest version of iTunes (10.6.3)?  It wouldn't hurt to also make sure your Windows OS has all of the latest patches and updates as well.
I assume you have plugged the iPod ino different USB ports located directly on your PC and tried using another 30 pin dock connector cable to rule out the possibility of a bad cable?

  • How do I move my itunes media to an external drive?

My hard drive is getting full. I would like to move my tunes media to an external drive but now I have music all over. Has anyone done this succesfully?

Copy the entire iTunes folder to the root of external drive, e.g. as X:\iTunes where X: is the drive letter. Click the icon for iTunes and immediately press and hold down the shift key. Keep holding until asked to choose or create a library. Click choose and browse to the file X:\iTunes\iTunes Libary.itl. Use File > Library > Organize Library > Consolidate Files and click OK. iTunes will create local copies of any stray files in the media folder. You can then delete the originals stored elsewhere.
Backup the library with this User Tip. (And yes, that means you really need another drive.)

  • HOW CAN I RESTORE MY ITUNES BACKUP FROM MY MAC BOOK TO MY DESKTOP MAC?

HOW CAN I RESTORE MY ITUNES IPHONE BACKUP FROM MY MAC BOOK TO MY DESKTOP MAC? THE REASON IS BECAUSE I HAVE TEXTFREE TEXT MESSAGES THAT I NEED FOR MY ATTORNEY AND WHEN I RESTORE IT FROM MY MACBOOK IT DOESNT INSTALL THE TEXTFREE BECAUSE I HAD DELETED ALL MY APPS IN ITUNES FROM IT. I HAVE ALL THE APPS ON MY DESKTOP MAC BUT I NEED TO KNOW HOW TO EXTRACT ONLY THE BACKUPS FROM THE MACBOOK AND IMPORT TO MY MAC DESKTOP. THE DESKTOP MAC IS THE ONE THAT HAS ALL OF MY LATEST BACKUPS. PLEASE SOMEONE HELP IF YOU KNOW THE ANSWER. THANKYOU

Easy. Copy it from the old Mac to the new one.
There are a variety of techniques including Setup Assistant (as soon as you get your new MacBook Air, it will ask you if you want to transfer information from another computer), Migration Assistant (if you elect to transfer information later), enabling file sharing between the two computers, or copying your music to a flash drive or other storage device followed by importing it to iTunes.
iTunes: How to move your music from one computer to another
Once your music library and everything else you want to transfer from the MacBook Pro resides on the new MBA, sync your iPod to the MBA. Sync the iPhone too when you get it, and they will both have identical iTunes music libraries.

  • How do i restore missing files for i work 09 as it is asking me to reinstall but cant find the disk?

how do i restore missing files for i work 09 as it is asking me to reinstall but cant find the disk?

    Hello Jessica472,
It sounds like you need to recover some missing files but do not have access to the iWork '09 disc you used to install it. If you have a Time Machine backup and know what files you need, you can use the "Restoring specific files or folders" section of the following article to restore them:
Mac Basics: Time Machine backs up your Mac
If you do not have Time Machine, you will need the disc to reinstall the software suite.

  • How can I restore my itunes on a new computer from an external hard drive without a back up?

How can I restore my itunes on a new computer?
I use an external hard drive to store all my information i.e. music / apps / movies but my current laptop has just blown up so now using a temp laptop.
I am looking to try & restore my itunes & all of its information like my playlists / apps & everything else from the hard drive but it does not have a back up in the programmes to restore from that.
    Currently running Windows 7.
All I want to do is have my itunes back without the pain of looking & reloading all my info which will take me an age.
Any hints tips or advice that has worked for you would be greatly appreciated.

Did you store the media library files on the external drive as well?
If so press and hold down shift as you start iTunes, use the choose option, and connect to the iTunes Library.itl file on the external drive.
If not you will need to start a new library and import the content into it. Do you have any devices that might hold ratings and playlists that could be recovered? If so see the second and third entries from the bottom of the table of recovery tools in Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device, and read the rest of it if you have any iOS devices.
