How do i rotate a video without clipping off parts of it?

Can someone tell me how to do this?  I know how to rotate from the help forums:
Rotate a clip
Select the clip in the Timeline.
In the Effects view, click the Edit Effects button.
Expand the Motion effect in the Properties view, and do one of the following:Drag the underlined value to the right of Rotation.
Click Rotate Left or Rotate Right to rotate the clip 90° in either direction.
But when i do this, it chops off the top and bottom portions of my video.  I instructed it to leave video aspect ratio, but it wont do so.  It still chops off the top and bottom.
Any suggestions?  If it helps, its a .avi movie as recorded from a digital camera.
BTW, my free Google Picasa did this in seconds with no aspet ration change with 1 button.....just sayin'

Matthew,
Actually, it did keep the Aspect Ratio, as it is defined, but instead of a horizontal Aspect Ratio of say 4:3, you now have a vertical Aspect Ratio of 4:3. If it kept the horizontal, your image would be squashed in one dimension and then stretched in the other - not what you would likely want.
What you need to do is now treat your vertical image. In most cases, I find it preferable to use the fixed Effect>Motion>Scale, and then effectively crop off parts of the top, or the bottom, or both. This has the disadvantage of having to Scale the image up, and it will begin to degrade in quality, so keep a close eye out for that.
Depending on a few factors, one can use certain artistic treatments to use the vertical image in your horizontal Frame: one could use it as a PiP (Picture in Picture), one could create a background, and just use Motion>Scale to drop the vertical dimension to match the vertical dimension of the Frame, letting the background show on probably both sides. Some videographers will shoot two shots with the camera 90 degrees out of orientation, i.e. on its side, when they want a "split-screen," i.e. PiP with two, side-by-side images, and just Rotate both Clips, and align them in the horizontal frame.
Now, what was your purpose for shooting with the camera on its side? What effect were you trying to obtain?
If this was a mounting issue, such as the camera had to be mounted on its side to get it where it was needed, then the trick is to frame less tightly, knowing that you will be effectively cropping off some of the image, when you Rotate.
Good luck,
Hunt

  • How do I rotate my video without the video going "blank?"

    I have Mac OSX 10.7.4
    Quicktime is version 10.1
I am using a .mov file I filmed using my iphone. I filmed it sideways to be widescreen, but when I open it on my mac in quicktime, it appears longways instead of sideways. I go to edit- rotate left, and it rotates, but no video plays. The video is black, but the audio still works.
Any advice on how to rotate it and keep my video?
    Thanks!

  • In PSE 7, how can I rotate my video, which displays sideways, to vertical?

How can I rotate my video which displays sideways to vertical in PSE 7?
It's a waterfall, I filmed it vertically, but it displays horizontally. Full Edit doesn't work on film clips and the rotate option is greyed out.
    Thanks for any feedback.

PSE 7 is Ps Elements,  not Photoshop.  Try posting in the Photoshop Elements forum, as not many users here are familiar with Elements.

Try plugging it into a computer with iTunes opened. If you see anything that says restore, say no.
Sometimes these issues resolve themselves when you connect the device to iTunes.
What happens when you hold the home and sleep/wake button? I know it doesn't work, but does it shut off at all?

Have you transferred photos from your computer to your iPhone which is selected under the Photos tab for your iPhone sync preferences with iTunes?
If so, you can place this video in the folder of photos on your computer that is selected to be transferred to your iPhone via the iTunes sync process. Under the Photos tab for your iPhone sync preferences with iTunes, select Include Videos.

  • How do I rotate Aperture videos with iMovie ?

    Hi;
I have some videos stored inside the Aperture library, which are flipped 90 degrees. When I right click on the video I want to rotate, I have the contextual menu wich says ... Modify with iMovie... (this is actually the translation since I use french version of Aperture).
Clicking on it open iMovie, then I find the video I want to rotate (quite easy..), I do it.
    and THEN ?
How do I find back into Aperture the edited video ? Should I re-import it ?
    Thanks a lot for help

Well, it seems I have no choice. I  already tried the export from iMovie to desktop, then back to Aperture and it worked fine. It is just not very convenient. (I use small video clips of golf swings, so I have sometimes to rotate 20 or mode videos).
To answer to Kirby, I tried also to make some minor changes instead of just rotating the video. Didn't work anyway.
My initial motivation was that I have seen this ...edit with iMovie.. in the contextual menu of Aperture; I expected a true user-friendly command, but it wasn't.
Thank you anyway to all the contributors. May be in a next release?

  • How do  i rotate a video in I-movie 09?

    here is my dilemna
i shot a video with my t-mobile G1 cell phone
i FORGOT that i had to do it in Landscape and wound up doing it in Portrait mode
then phone has no way of rotateing it
so i did a google search to find out how to rotate the video a quarter turn to the right
everything i found said VIDEO EDITOR, but for the most part it was Windows replies n Mac
so i drug the 3gp file into squared 5 mpeg streamclip and converted it to mpeg4
    then i drug it into i-movie 9
everything good so far....except i cant find in I-Movie where to rotate the video.

highlight the clip...ie yellow box around the one you want to rotate. click the little blue wheel/gear at the beginning of the clip. menu pops...select crop and rotate.
clarification: highlight the clip after you create a project with it!

It's using StageVideo, if that matters.
I have tried setting the rotation property on MediaPlayer/MediaPlayerSprite/MediaElement but that doesn't work.

  • How do you rotate a video 90 degrees?

    Hi,
I was hoping to find out how I rotate a video 90 degrees clockwise which has been imported by a digital camera (which was captured in a vertical position). I only have QuickTime Player and not QuickTime Pro. Is it possible to do this without having to purchase Quicktime Pro? (I don't want to spend $44 to rotate one video).
    Thanks.

Let me Google that for you...

How do I watch flash based videos without adobe flash installed using Safari?

Once you have Chrome installed, activate the Develop menu in Safari (go to Safari Preferences > Advanced > Show Develop Menu). You then will see under the Develop menu the Open Page With option and Chrome will be listed there.
So each time you open a page with Safari requiring Flash, you use that menu option to open the same page in Chrome.
