How Do I Run a Virus Scan? Attempting to Resolve Gmail Access Issue.
Hello. I'm not technically savey and am in need to assistance in resolving an issue. I suddenly am no longer able to access my GMail account. The system will not accept long-used password. I'm working back through GMail assistance forum and was told "to run a virus scan on the computer," i.e., "scan your machine for viruses and malware. Get rid of any programs found during the scan." The message refers me to a Google Pack, which comes with free anti-virus software. When I check the website I don't see anything that looks like it is appropriate for running a virus scan on the computer.
How do I "run a virus scan"? Thank you in advance for your assistance.
Hello Kappy, Thank you for your response. I reviewed a portion of the "Missing Manual" by David Pogue and figured out how to go into utilities and repair permissions. The following are the responses I got when I ran "repair permissions":

So what do I do with this information? I'm not sure what it means and how it impacts the computer. However, after I ran this, I was able to complete the goggle form for a new password (my computer no longer recognized my years-old password) and obtain a new one and then access my email account again. (I opened a bogus email yesterday that I have since learned contained a virus so I am assuming this may have caused my angst.) So I'm now back to my gmail account but not sure how the above information related to the "repairs permission" should be addressed if at all.
Thank you again for your assistance. I am truly not computer savey and what is intuitive for some folks just goes over my head so I truly appreciate your help.

Hacking of financial accounts happens, and it does not require access to your computer, either physically or via malware. Although there is Mac malware, there's none that you are likely to be infected with at the moment. See my Mac Malware Guide. Most likely that answer was simply a catch-all answer from someone used to dealing with Windows machines.
However, if you really want to run a scan, use ClamXav. If it finds any malware, post the details here before panicking... most likely, it's just Windows malware attached to an e-mail message or something. (If it's actually Mac malware, the name of the malware will include the text "OSX".) Also, note that you should not let any anti-virus software delete e-mail messages, if they are infected, as that will corrupt the mailbox containing the message. -

As there are no (as in none, zero, nada, zip) viruses for OS X running a virus scan would probably be a total waste of time, energy and resources. The ONLY reason to run antivirus software is if you frequently download unknown files from the Internet and then pass them onto MS Windows users. The files could be infected and while they would not in any way affect OS X they could affect the MS Windows users.
However if you insist you can download ClamXav (Google it) which is free, frequently updated and is fairly easy on system resources. -

An intermittent problem with acrobat.com's underlying virus scan component causes this issue. This issue happens occasionally on a small number of server instances.
The solution is to update the article again. Trying again typically routes you to a different host in the server array. -

You can assume that your device is secure, but if you supplied any personal information in response to that email, consider it to be compromised. Phishing emails generally don't contain malware, and if one does, it's probably designed for Windows and won't affect an iOS device.

Very Funny everyone. But seriously, for a moment if you will. Are we Mac users really that safe? Could someone take a moment and explain? I have been a huge Mac fan ever since my first iMac, the one that looked like a bowling ball, and crashed every 10 minutes. Even then, the Mac OS was way ahead of Microsoft. Now, ever since X was written, I have a whole list of things I say when persuading someone to dump their pc and own a Mac. I had heard that virus problems just didn't happen on a Mac. I'm a believer... but why? How come we can be so flippant about the whole subject. I guess the days of "Virex" coming pre-installed on your iMac is ancient history.

How on earth would Facebook know you have a virus - not least because there are no viruses that can affect OS X.
There are many forms of ‘Malware’ that can affect a computer system, of which ‘a virus’ is but one type, ‘trojans’ another. Using the strict definition of a computer virus, no viruses that can attack OS X have so far been detected 'in the wild', i.e. in anything other than laboratory conditions. The same is not true of other forms of malware, such as Trojans. Whilst it is a fairly safe bet that your Mac will NOT be infected by a virus, it may have other security-related problem, but more likely a technical problem unrelated to any malware threat.

My late 2010 MacBook Pro was completely wiped out the other day, and a friend of mine who is a techie determined that something completely everything. I mean everything! No boot function...nothing!
I was hoping it was just a HDD failure, since I've had it replaced once before. I noticed before the crash, when I ran "repair disc," then "verify disc" that all these error messages came up. I called Apple Care, and he made me an Apple Genius appointment that day at my nearest store. Long story short, he could not do anything more, since once he removed the casing, he noticed what could have been a liquid spill, which of course, voids Apple Care. Thank God my friend is a tech wizard.
He took it home with him, completely took it apart, rane various hardware diagnostics on it, there was no liquid spill, the HDD does work, the logice board isn't damamged, it was just wiped out.
My Mac was acting funny the last few days, and the fan kept running constantly, so as a precaution I backed everything up to the Time Capsule and another portable hard drive. So the problem is, if I downloaded something and it's now just waiting in one, if not both, of those backups, how can I make sure it doesn't get transfered over once I restore all my files?

while i was browsing photos on google, another page just came up that said i have to update firefox and my flash player for security reasons and then a box just popped out and i clicked save file. After i installed it, i came back to the download page and i became suspicious because it has no mozilla.com in its address, it was http://setupfirefox.co.cc/
i researched on it in the web and i realized that i have just downloaded a fake firefox update which probably has a virus on it.
well, my anti malware scanner has detected 2 trojan horses and i removed it and restarted my netbook but i don't know what damages has been done by it..i dont even know if all traces of it has been removed..I understand .. .. I know i am ending the process .. I have the symantec corporate edition for my anti virus .. and i have detected some of them with it .. but i believe I am going to have to run the scan in safe mode .. Well, it probably is and then again, it might be nothing at all. The word "Heuristics" is the key that it was identified as being suspicious by a special heuristics scan engine, not by matching it against a specific signature. The scan spotted something and feels you need to be cautions with it.
The ".exe" would normally signal a Windows executable, but it could also be a self-extracting zip file, in which case it can be manually extracted by a Mac.
You are correct about items in Mail Downloads being OK to trash, but attachments are also embedded in the raw e-mail. Normally the only time they show up in Mail Downloads is if it has been viewed (such as an image) or saved. In these cases the user will normally see the same infection for both the original e-mail and the attachment. My guess is that the original e-mail had already been trashed or moved to the junk/spam folder.
From the attachment name, it almost certainly is one of the many Trojan's disguised as a delivery notice that made the rounds during the holidays, so I think all the right decisions were made. Just wanted to clarify a few things in case users jump to the wrong conclusion about the next attachment. -
