  • We have a PC with iTunes that needs the hard drive reformatted. Right now, it can't connect to other computers on the network. Can I save my music to a thumb drive, then re-load when the computer is reformatted?

We have a Windows XP desktop with iTunes for windows. The hard drive needs to be reformatted. Right now, the computer will not connect to other computers on the network. Can I save my iTunes songs to a thumbdrive, then re-load after reformatting?  How do I do it?

Copy the entire iTunes folder out to the drive. If it is too big to go as one copy stuff over to another computer in batches. It is important to have not only the media but the library file in order to properly restore your library.
See also this User Tip. Assuming the machine won't connect to the internet you could download the SyncToy installer on another machine and then transfer it with the thumb drive. If it will connect to the net don't forget to deauthorize the machine before reformatting the hard drive.

    Hello ryane84
The easiest and most efficient way to copy your music is to follow the steps under the External drive section. Make sure that you have organized the iTunes library first before you copy it over. Then put the copied iTunes folder in the same Music folder on your computer.

    Hi MJPHU,
I understand that when you want to move music or video from your external hard drive to sync with iTunes, that media is staying on your computer and taking up hard drive space. In this situation I would recommend changeing the location of where iTunes looks for the media. This way you can sync anything you want without dragging files to your computer hard drive. If the external drive with the media is connected, iTunes will sync directly from there. The following article explains how to change the location of where iTunes looks for your media.

  • Can you save your itunes and songs onto an external hard drive so that incase your computer crashes you will still have all your music?

Can you save your itunes and songs onto an external hard drive so that incase your computer crashes you will still have all your music?

The procedures below are for "moving" your library but as long as you don't delete it from your internal drive you are basically backing up.
iTunes: How to move your music to a new computer [or another drive] - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4527
Simple answer:  Copy your whole iTunes folder to the external drive.  For subsequent backups you might want to learn about cloning and using a tool that only does incremental backups of recently changed items rather than copying all your files each time.

  • Is it possible to save an iTunes media library on an external hard drive that is connected to a wi-fi router?

The external hard drive is connected, through USB, to a wi-fi router. So, can I save my entire iTunes library on that external hard drive and access the files wirelessly and also use that library to sync my iPhone 4S? I have a limited hard disk space on my MacBook Air and don't want any itunes media on my computer, so would it be possible to have it all on the external hard drive while maintainig the ability to sync/play those files saved on the external hard drive without the original files being on the MacBook Air? Sorry for the long question I just want to make everything as clear as possible. Really thanks guys!

Unfortunately, I don't see a solution to your problem.

  • HT1451 i had to restart my computer and i lost my itunes library i did not save it on a hard drive or back up. so i want to no how i can get my songs from my i pod back on to my itunes library again thanks

Your i-device was not designed to be a reliable unique storage for your media. It is not a backup device and everything is structured around you maintaining your media on a computer which is itself backed up. Sync transfer is one way, computer to device, matching the device content to the content on the computer (except purchased content as mentioned below).  For transferring other items from an i-device to a computer you will probably have to use third party commercial software unless you have an older model iPod. Examples (check the web for others; this is not an exhaustive listing, nor do I have any idea if they are any good):

  • Hard drive is Failing how do I save the iTunes 7 data?

On my iMac G4 the hard drive no longer mounts since I tried to upgrade to Leopard from 10.4.11. What I need to know is what data do I take from the hard drive to save my iTunes library of 13gigs. I would like to save whatever I need to reinstall it when I replace the drive. Any assistance will be greatly appreciated!

Well clearly you want to try and save anything and everything you can. Typically in the iTune Music folder you will find all the media files. With just those you can start a new library but won't have stuff like playlists, some artwork, play counts, etc.
If you can find them, there are two data base files in the iTunes folder and also likely an artwork folder. Artwork you can always redownload from the iTunes store, so not a big deal saving that one if you can't. But if you can save either of the two database files (one being the XML file) you may be able to recreate all/most of your library as it was before.
    Good luck,
    Patrick

  • How to save iTunes library from failing internal drive?

How does one go about doing this? My internal drive is making noise (and I suspect about to fail), so I'm trying to save my itunes library...I have already switched default drive to my external, but as I understand it some info is still saved on my internal drive? So now what? I am more concerned about saving the music files themselves than the playlists, etc. I know just enough to be dangerous! Please help!
