How do I secure erase macbook pro 2012 retina for resale

How do I secure/erase and set to factory settings 15" Macbook Pro 2012 retina) for resale?

Install or Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion from Scratch
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Erase the hard drive:
  1. Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
  2. After DU loads select your startup volume (usually Macintosh HD) from the
left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
  3. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Optionally, click on
the Security button and set the Zero Data option to one-pass. Click on
the Erase button and wait until the process has completed.
  4. Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Install button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.
Be sure you disable or turn off iCloud. Deauthorize the computer in iTunes. Remove any Firmware Passwords you may have configured. Turn off FileVault if enabled.

  • MacBook Pro 2012 Retina - UK Stores

Hi, I'm sure like many.. you'll be opting for the new and improved MacBook Pro 2012 Retina... pfft who needs an optical drive anymore! I have a small PC that can burn the odd DVD if I need too ;-)
I was just wondering if anyone had any news on UK stock for in-store purchasing? From what I understand, the RAM in the new Book cannot be upgraded personally so whatever one you land up buying is what you'll have to live with .. is that correct?
I hope the UK stores can offer me the 16gb RAM / 512gb model from stock -- else I will have to wait 2-3 weeks for shipment!
If anyone has any news, please post =) Thanks!

All, I think this situation has gone a bit pear shaped - they are having logistic problems in the supply chain, hens why Regent Street only got 8... yes 8! of the new MacBook Pro's .......
I think the best thing to do is order online if you need a configured product (ie. 16gb of ram) like I did!
If you dont mind the 'basic' models, then go ahead to the store --- or wait 3 - 4 weeks for delivery -_-
    Happy MacBook Retina Shopping =)

I do know that for new MBPs there is a no questions asked return policy if returned within 14 days of purchase.  I am not certain if that applies for peripherals.  If you have not damaged it, I would think that the odds are on your side if you return it for a refund.  Obviously you have a good reason for the return.
Then it may be a good reason to purchase a new MBP.    In any event, call the store and ask.
    Ciao.

  • Airport card broken on MacBook Pro 2012, alternatives for wifi?

    Hello All,
I dropped my MacBook Pro 2012 and immediately it said that Airport Card is not installed, nor Bluetooth. I took it to Apple Service and after they looked at it, they told me the entire logic board will need to be replaced in order to fix it. Obviously I won't be forking out 700 euros for a new one when I can just get a new MacBook eventually, I was just hoping to get a few more months out of it.
My question is can I use a wireless usb adapter to pick up wifi, or an airport express? I bought today a D-Link Wireless adapter usb and it is not installing for some reason. I have IOS X Mavericks 10.9.5 If I use the Airport Express how do I go about setting this up?
Thanks for any help, I am fairly confused at this point!

You need to buy a USB wireless that is Mac compatible.. and it must have drivers available for Mavericks.. not just Mac compatible.. It is not easy to find them but look on ebay.. just search usb wireless mac.
You must double check though.. DWA-125 proclaims itself as mac compatible.. that means.
    (Mac OS X,  10.4.X,  10.5.X, 10.6.X)
Mavericks made a big jump as did Lion and apparently so does Yosemite.. do don't expect drivers will jump out at you. I have tried lots of USB sticks and they seldom work.
Many companies lie.. or bend the truth and they say Mac compatible and mean.. up to snow leopard.
    or an airport express?
Yes, you can use an express.. but not by USB.. that means on a MBPr you will need to buy a Thunderbolt to ethernet adapter (forget the USB one.. it is 2.0 useless junk).. as well as the express and setup the express as wireless bridge. This is great for a static computer.. but rather less than portable.
I think it is such a shame we lost the old Express port.. PCMCIA as it was in earlier days.. it was great for this sort of thing.. and was better as it actually connects to the main bus in the computer..
Otherwise move up your new computer replacement date.

  • How to remove gunk on macbook pro 15 retina trackpad

how to remove gunk on my macbook pro 15 retina trackpad

That gunk is dried human body oils combined with dirt (or food,  dust etc)
To remove it, use a soft cloth wrapped around your finger tip and dipped in rubbing alcohol to cut the grease/oil.
Once the cloth tip is dirty, use another and repeat as your transfering the oils to the cloth, but the rubbing alcohol evaporates quickly so you can't use the same spot of cloth.
For the edges and corners, use a toothpick or soft sharp plastic piece around the cloth.
Do not pour water or any sort of liquid near the machine (except in very small amounts like under a capful) to prevent a accidential spill.
Consider using external mouse and keyboards, it keeps the wear and tear (and crap) off the machine so it stays brand new looking.

  • Macbook Pro 2012 Retina Won't Start, burnt power pins on power port, digital artist dead in the water

After a year of owning my macbook pro late 2012 retina model, it started having difficulty charging, it wouldn't charge even when green on the magsafe, and had difficulty turning orange, basically right after the 1 year warranty was over by one month, I went into the apple store and they told me that I simply needed to replace the power adapter and cord and it would be fine, but that it most likely was caused by me plugging it into a power strip, and that I had to plug it directly into the wall in its own power slot, which they never said that was what you were supposed to do when I purchased the laptop and could not find it anywhere in the literature. It was fine in the store for the apple worker, but after even just a few months I had to to constantly twist and unplug and replug the magsafe adapter from different angles just to get it to work, and it was like a living ****, as I am a digital artist and my wacom tablet will not work until my macbook pro is charging and the magsafe is orange, so everyday I would waste 30 minutes to an hour with the finicky magsafe, until recently my macbook pro will not turn on at all.
Since the problem arose after warranty I had to pay out of pocket for the replacement magesafe cord, which was a temporary solution, I pointed out that the magsafe power port on the laptop itself also had burn marks just like the magsafe cord that had a few pins pushed in and was slightly blackened but the attendant ignored that and said it was fine and just swapped out the cord. The "genius" attendant claimed if I just plugged in the macbook pro directly into the wall, everything would be fine and back to normal, and I did just that, I never plugged it into a power strip ever again, and still we arrive to my current predicament.
I believe I have to repair the actual power port the magsafe plugs into on the laptop, and get a new magsafe cord all over again, but it will be much more expensive than simply swapping out a cord this time, and I don't think the reason this happened to begin with has been truly identified, and I'm worried I have to make this repair every year, and I can't afford this kind of planned obsolescence, and I thought I was getting the best laptop in the world, and it was, everything was perfect not one single problem, except for this power issue, which now won't even allow me to use the computer at all and is now a giant paper weight, and leaves a dirty taste in my mouth when it comes to apple products.
I live in San Francisco in a house that was built around 1910 and don't know much about what or when renovations were made for power, but I have a feeling some kind of incorrect voltage is happening, and I was never instructed on this, and every other macbook is fine, my roommates have earlier models like the 2007 and 2009 MacBooks and have no problem like mine.
    Please help me

I don't understand why and how the red light in the audio jack is still on while the computer is totally off, not connected to any power source and the battery seems to be empty... how is taht possible?
Because the battery is not empty, something is messed up, likley the SMC.
All I can advise is doing a SMC Reset, which resets the power firmware in case it got messed up and hopefully that will charge the battery up like normal.
If you can't do it or it doesn't work tommorow after charging up (turned off) overnight then just take it to Apple.

  • How do I reset a MacBook Pro w/retina display to factory defaults?

We just got a MacBook Pro for my daughter and she used the migration assistant for bringning things to it.  If she wants to start over how do I reset the machine to it's factory defaults?

  • In macbook pro 2012 retina display einbauen

Mac OS X already handles that stuff for you.
If it ran any faster, it would melt.

  • How do I turn my MacBook Pro with retina display into a gaming computer

How can I increase my MacBooks graphic handling so that I can game better on it? I want to be able to play like battlefield 4 at maximum graphic capability.
I have on my macbook now:
    Configuration
    2.8GHz Dual-core Intel Core i7
    16GB 1600MHz DDR3L SDRAM
    256GB Flash Storage
    Keyboard/User's Guide
    Country Kit

With all the Retina display Mac's they are what they are as you bought it. There is no upgrades that can be done on them.
That and the model you bought, the 13" models, only have the Intel integrated graphics on the CPU. No other discrete graphics like the higher end 15" models (some of the 15" models only have the Intel graphics also).
you would be better off selling that Mac and buying a Windows notebook that does have a NVidia or AMD graphics card in it. Also you would be much better off buying a desktop system to game on.

  • HT5219 how do i get my macbook pro 13" retina to keep its display settings the same when I unplug it from my thunderbolt 27" display?

I have just bought a macbook pro 13" with retina display and a 27" thunderbolt display to go with it.
I plug in the display, set it all up to the look and format that I want to use (same for both displays, I am using the mirroring feature), and then when I unplug the macbook from the 27" display it's settings revert and I can't see half my windows as they fall off the edge of the smaller macbook screen.
Is there a way to make the macbook keep the same display settings, even when I unplug it from the 27" display?

Not that I know of... but if someone comes along with a method, I would certainly be interested...

  • MacBook Pro 2012 retina frequently logging out

hi, i’m on a MacBookPro 2012 retina, running 10.7.4. Every once in a while i experience my machine logging me out without any reason. I also can’t find a pattern in these occurences. And it’s not just switching to the Login-window, but really logging out. Apps fire up quite fast after logging in again and Photoshop opening recovered files, but this is still annoying.
    Anyone else experiencing this behaviour?
    Thanks for any thoughts!

I don’t know if this is not liked, but i have the feeling i need to bump this up. So sorry if this bump-thing is not ok.
Problem still there and no clue why.

  • MacBook pro 13inch retina for editing

    Hello everyone,
I am about to graduate from college and I am planning to get a new macbookpro.
I am a film major, so as soon as I get out I'll be starting to look for jobs mainly as an editor and as a producer ( assistant supposedly).
Since I own a copy of Avid Media Composer 7, I was wondering if the Macbook retina 13 inch would be my best option.
I do not know how big the projects I'll be editing are going to be, and thinking that I am looking for some kind of portability, I was gonna  go for a Macbook pro retina 13 inch with i7 processor.
The thing is that I don't wanna spend so much money for a machine that will not be able to handle projects in, let's say 1 year or 1 year and a half.
So the 13 inch i want would go for around 1700 with student discount. Otherwise my other option would be the 15inch with dedicated graphic card, but that is around 700 dollars more.
Would the 700 dollars be a good investment ? or should I save them for my future computer ?
thank you very much guys, I thought you would have better insights or experience with this kind of decisions.
I should get a decision soon, also, because my mbp late 2008 is so beat up that I can't even pull it away from the charger.
    Thanks !
    L

Has anyone tested it yet with MC or FCPX ?

What if it is stolen but I didn't know and payed for it is there anyway I can get it reset or do it my self
if it is a stolen macbook - then you need to contact the seller and get a refund.
apple will not reset it for you if the original owner logged in to his find my mac and did a remote lock - you have to prove to Apple that you did that yourself.
even if you didn't know it was stolen and bought/payed for it - you can still get charged with possession of stolen goods.
not trying to be rude or trying to scare you - those are the facts.

  • How I can format my MacBook Pro 2012 without loosing anything

Since a couple of months I am noticing that my laptop is getting slower on booting   Plus when I am doing  repair disk it stating that I need to do it from recovery & once I scan it  from recovery it will not find any error.
I think it's time to reformat the laptop.
    Can someone help me.
    Rgds

Make a backup with time machine or boot clone.
either you reinstall the new OS which will not disturb your files/folders/pics etc.
or your reformat the HD and do a clean install of the OS and use setup assistant to put back your account.
