How do I stop mail from automatically opening when iCal events begin?
When an event is about to begin, the mail app opens and I'd like to turn that off since I don't use the mail app.

This may have something to do with the "Automatically retrieve invitations from Mail" option being enabled? Click on the iCal Menu > Preferences > Advanced. It may also be the Alarms setting? This is for 10.6 iCal so it may be in a different place for 10.5?

I wrote an AppleScript that asks me each time I connect the iPhone/camera/etc whether or not I want to open iPhoto. Usually I just hit return and it doesn't open, but once in a while I'll click Yes to open iPhoto and import videos from my phone. I just did it because it's nice to have a little reminder so I don't go for too too long without importing, but not have it slow things down each time I plug in.
Below is the script. Paste it into AppleScript Editor, then export it as an application. Then set Image Capture to open this app when you plug in your phone. Would love to hear if it's helpful for you or if you modify it to use other criteria to automatically import only at certain times or conditions.

You can't.
You can delete mails from the reading list without seeing them beyond the preview....say you open your mail app and you have 20 new mails. The top one or maybe #21 will be open and displayed. In the list you can swipe across the mail, right to left, and delete it without opening it, but there'll always be one mail open. That's just how it works.

Help how do i stop iTunes from automatically opening when I press the right directional arrow

I am have an early 2011 Macbook Pro i5 with OSX 10.9 running itunes 11.1.3
Everytime I press the directional right arrow it open itunes and plays a song. It seems like an odd problem. How do I stop this?
I tried searching for a solution and can't find anything.
Any help would be appreciated.

Settings > General > Restrictions, make sure changes to "Accounts" are allowed.

When i go to system preferences, then users & groups, then to my name, log in items ....this box is clear, i have unchecked everything, yet things still start up......

sometimes these applications will have a setting in the preferences to not open on login of computer. If you see none of that, you can go into:
system preferences> Users & Groups > Select your user>Login Items.
unlock the settings by hitting the lock icon on the bottom left of the window then youll be able to uncheck these things from opening when you log in.

Foxfire automatically loads when I boot up my computer after all the other essential programs boot up. Thanks for pointing me to the link about the startup programs changes. I found the solution there. Foxfire was hiding in the hidden startup menu. Once I found it using msconfig, I was able to stop it from loading when I started my computer. Again, thanks for the help.

Is there any way to stop iTunes from popping up and syncing my iPod when I plug it in? I have about 1000 songs that are misplaced and I do NOT want them all erased off of my iPod when I plug it in. Yet, all the ways that are explained mean that you have to plug your iPod into the computer and have iTunes open and sync it just so you can click the box telling it not to sync. ANY way around this? Open the iTunes preferences and turn that option off, or press the Shift and Control keys while connecting the iPod to your computer, releasing them once the iPod appears.
