How do I transfer applications & data from my old hard-drive to my new one?

My old hard drive started to crash, it was on it's way out and making funny noises. I have brought a new hard drive and connected it to the same leeds as the old one. I have put the opperating system on to the new hard drive and it is all up and running..... but.
I want to transfer all my old applications like garage sale and limewire without having to pay for them again and transfer all my music and photos from the old hard drive to the new.
So:
1: How do i get the old hard drive out of the position it's in it seems glued in and i can't see any screws?
2: How do i connect both hard drives and transfer everything from the old to the new? Do i need to buy another set of leeds or should they be in the computer
Your help would be most appreciated.....

Hi
You should be able to have both drives installed at the same time in the rear U shaped bracket. One needs to be mounted in the bottom of the bracket, have it's jumpers set to master and be connected to the end connector of the ribbon cable. The other needs to mounted above it, have it's jumpers set to slave and be connected to the middle connector of the ribbon cable. The computer should have the leads to do this, i.e. one ribbon cable with two connectors and two molex power connectors. With both drives installed, you can then drag your music and photos etc from the old to the new. You could try dragging the applications, although if they install additional files elsewhere they'll need to be reinstalled from the original CDs or DVDs.
The old drive may be screwed into the U shaped bracket from below. There should be a single screw which secures the bracket to the chassis at the front, although it may be hidden under the ribbon cable. If you unplug the ribbon cable and undo the single screw you can remove the bracket still containing the old drive, by sliding it forwards and lifting it up at the front. The screws securing the drive to the bracket can then be undone from beneath.

  • How can I transfer specific date from my old hard drive to a new one?

I'm planning on buying the OWC Data Doubler and installing an additional drive [240GB OWC SSD].  I want to transfer everything except my iTunes library to the SSD so that it will run faster.  I can't transfer the iTunes library because it's too big.  How can I transfer just the data I want [OS, Documents, etc.] but leave the iTunes library on the drive.  I do have an external drive/time machine backup available.

I bought my wife a new Ipad 3. How do I transfer her data from the old Ipad 1 to the new one?

Sync the old one, and get a full back up stored.  Make sure you transfer your purchases to I tunes, and make sure you upload any photos taken on the pad, or imported thru the cck.
Then plug the new pad in, and set it up from the backup of the old one.  In theory, all the stuff that was in the back up will migrate to the new pad.  If apps, music or books get lost, you can redownload them for free, using the same appLe id.
If you are selling or gifting the old one,   When you are done and happy with the new set up,  go to setting, general, reset, reset all content and data.  This will place the pad in factory new condition.   Lastly, if it is a 3 g pad, especially if it a Verizon pad, make sure to cancel the plan

Copy the entire iTunes folder from \Users\<User>\Music on the old drive into your music folder on the new computer.
Or see Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device.

  • When transferring data from an old hard drive to a new one, is there a way to keep alias files and folders in tact?

My mac and I rely HEAVILY on the use of alias files and folders. The simple version of my question is: When transferring data from an old hard drive to a new one, is there a way to keep alias files and folders in tact?  These are not symlinks or symbolic links, they're all alias files and folders.
Is there any software out there that might help me with a solution?  Are there any tricks or tips you can give me to try?

Use either Setup Assistant at first start, or Migration Assistant on subsequent occasions and all will be transferred intact. Given your wording I presume you are Unix savvy and will appreciate the problems that duplicate userids would cause, so of you use MA for the migration, make sure the target Mac has no userid equal to that on the source and you will be fine.
SA does not have these issues since it runs before any user account is created, so it can simply copy over everything. But MA runs after the fact and only solves the issue partially by changing the UID in the user directory, leading to permission problems.

  • How do I transfer my data from my old LOST BlackBerry to my new one?

    Hi everyone,
I hope someone could help me out...
I recently lost my blackberry pearl 8100 after car accident
    ( & thankfully I backed up my data the week before);
anyways now I wanted to know how I can transfer my data to my new blackberry curve? (without my old blackberry pearl...)
I keep reading about the switch wizard option; but since I don't have my old blackberry anymore (just my backed up data)... What can I do now?
    can someone help me?
    please and thanks

As posted before, if your data is in a PIM (e.g., Outlook) on your PC, then you can synch with that. Otherwise, you must use that backup file you created earlier. Here's a procedure:

  • How can I combine the data from 3 old hard drives onto 1 newer hard drive and not duplicate the data?

Is there an app that will help me do this?

Finder. Create three partitions, then drag & drop each old HD onto a separate one. Alternatively, create three folders on the new HD and drag & drop each volume onto a separate one.

where is the administrator window when I drag the folder "Backups.backupdb" from the old hard drive on the new one? At the moment when I try to do it, the window that appear doesn't allow me to continue. it only says "the volume has the wrong case sensitivity". thanks

Although the documentation says you can copy Time Machine backups in the Finder, it's very slow and sometimes doesn't work at all.
Launch Disk Utility, open the built-in help, and search for the term "Duplicate." Follow the instructions. All existing data on the destination volume will be erased. That shouldn't be a problem, because you don't want to mix backup and non-backup data on the same drive anyway. Turn Time Machine OFF in its preference pane while copying the volume.

  • How can I transfer my data from my internal hard drive to my internal ssd on my macbook pro?

A few days ago, I replaced my optical drive with an internal ssd. Now I want to transfer my operating programs from my hard drive to my new ssd. How do I have to do that?

I can only tell you that my system has the SSD in the optical slot. I know others don't recommend that, but it's worked fine for me. As for copying everything over, why not just use Carbon Copy Cloner? I don't see why you need Time Machine backups. I'm assuming your SSD is the same size or larger than your HD, or at least large enough to accomodate all your data. Then if you decide to swap the drives around in the bays, you can do that as well.
