How do I transfer files from my PC to my mac on an external hard drive?

I have an HP external hard drive that I have put all of my files from my PC on. I am trying to move them onto my Mac, but I have absolutely no idea what to do. As a warning, I am kind of computer illiterate.

Have a read here http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2518
If your Mac is running OSX 10.7 Lion you might wanna use this http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4796

  • HT4796 How do I transfer music from a PC to a Mac using an external hard drive?

I just purchased a MacBook Pro and have all my music and pictures saved to an external harddrive but I can not figure out how to transfer my music over from the hard drive without issues.

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
To transfer the music from the external drive to your Mac, it depends if you want to save your music in a folder or in iTunes.
To copy your music to your iTunes library, simply open iTunes and open a Finder window with your external drive open. Then, just drag your music to the iTunes window, so your music will be transferred to your computer.
The process is the same if you want to copy your music to another folder, but instead of opening iTunes, open a Finder window with the folder where you want to copy your music

  • How do i back up my files from an intel core duo imac to an external hard drive?

    Hello
How do I back up my files from an intel core duo imac to an external hard drive?

Like you do with any other Mac*:

Note: if you have a CoreDuo, you can only upgrade up to 10.6.8.  Only Core2Duos and higher can go to 10.7 (Lion).

  • How do i transfer file from my pc to my mac

How do i transfer files from my pc to my new i mac

I am struggling to transfer files over to my new Mac and the data migration at the store failed.  They didn't explain why - just told me I had to do it myself manually.
I put all the files (lots of work stuff!) on my external hard drive, but the Mac isn't even showing these files in the library when I connect the external hard drive.  The Office Suite opens programs like Word, so it seems to have loaded properly.
    Ideas?

  • How do I transfer files from my PC to mini Mac if I only have one monitor?

I'm going to be purchasing a Mac mini. I have a Windows PC running XP. I only have one display monitor, so I was wondering how do I transfer files from my XP to my mini Mac with only one monitor?
    Thanks

You'd have to give us some more information in regard to the inputs of your display.
Generally, you should be able to plug your current PC into one input (DVI most likely) and then the Mac mini into another (HDMI) then flip between the inputs on the monitor via the on-screen menu.

  • How do i transfer files from my pc to my mac with usb drive

I just bought an iMac and need to transfer files from my PC.  I have an external USB drive but iMac says it can read it.  How do I transfer these files?

If you don't need to write to the drive from the iMac, just plug it in and copy the files off. If you do, install software such as the NTFS-3G drivers.

  • How do I transfer my data to my new macbook pro using an external hard drive?

I've already set up my new MacBook Pro is my issue. It asked me if I'd like to "Migrate" my stuff or use an external hard drive etc but at the time I didn't transfer my data from my old MacBook yet. I was going to manually do it later as I had to wait for my External hard drive to back my old Mac up. Now it's that time and I have no idea how to do it. I believe I've researched best of my ability.
I feel like I'm asking a pretty dumb question. If I were to just drag all my programs out like my Adobe Suite on to my new macbook pro would that work? I feel like that's just too easy and incorrect. Please and thank you.

The Adobe suite can be downloaded free, you dont have to copy it at all, under standard CS6 Adobe rules, if you own the suite, you get 2 computers "activated at any one time"  Make sure, if youre not using the older computer, you deactivate the software under the HELP menu in Adobe.
format the new drive in disk utility ......APPLICATIONS.....UTILITIES.....DISK UTILITIES.......select the external drive and format (if its new and empty!!!) under the ERASE button with Mac OSX extended journaled
copy all your important stuff from older computer , pics, files, documents, personal anything.
most of you apps, i ASSUME you bought in the (other than Adobe software, or Office suite, etc etc,..... obviously) in the MAC APP store, so you can reload them on the new computer without copying them , makes things very easy......just open APP STORE, and download what you already bought.
really the only important things , is copy all important work files, documents, pictures, personal ABC...XYZ......  obviously.
the migration is about emails, contacts, etc etc etc, also data, just because you passed it by at the time doesnt mean you still cant do it,    go to the SEARCH at menu at top and type in MIGRATION ASSISTANT  to do it again , since you passed it by at first .
the only thing you NEED / SHOULD copy is all your personal stuff........Applications need to be reinstall from either ONLINE download,.......or from the MAC APP STORE,........  you cant just copy the apps over (in most cases) and toss them onto the new computer
Nahh, there are no dumb questions, just dumb mistakes because you DIDNT ask any questions, and we all make those here and there.

  • How do I transfer files from time machine to new mac?

I have owned my own imac since 2009, we have recently inherited a newer imac from a family member and I would like to transfer all of my files from my time machine to the new imac. How do I erase the files currently on this "new" imac, and then transfer my files from my time machine?

What version of OS X does the new iMac have installed. Do you know exactly which model it is?

  • How do I transfer files from my android to my Mac?

I can't seem to get my Mac to transfer from my android after I've gotten them to pair by way of bluetooth.
I bought my Mac in May and I'm having a really difficult time finding the value in the Mac aside from the trackpad. The problem is that I don't have hours to spend on tinkering with my computer. I just want it to work and it's very difficult.
I also can't transfer files to and from an MP3 player that isn't an ipod. All this reading about how user friendly Macs are and I continue to struggle. I want to slit my wrists after fussing around for about an hour on this thing.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. I would love to assimilate to the cult of Mac users, I'm just having a tough time getting there.

If you don't need to write to the drive from the iMac, just plug it in and copy the files off. If you do, install software such as the NTFS-3G drivers.

  • How can I transfer files from my pc to my mac

How can I move the files back and forth
Or just from pc to mac
    Thanks

It won't work. When the Mac is booted into FireWire target disk mode, it acts as an external FireWire drive. The drive is formatted as HFS+ which the PC can't read.

  • How can I transfer files from my iPod to my Mac?

I lost a bunch of old podcasts from my Mac and they are no longer on iTunes. I do have them on my iPod but I don't want to connect it to my Mac and have it sync up and lose the tracks. Is there a way to upload or transfer files or songs from my iPod to my Mac?

  • How do I retrieve data from a 500 GB Time Machine used as external hard drive?

I have a very particular situation. For several years I used a 500GB Time Machine as a wi-fi broadcaster, a back up, and also as external storage for iTunes - I 'partitioned' it to allow for it's use as an external drive.
Fast forward, and I've replaced the Time Machine with a new 3 TB Time Machine, as well as purchased a separate external drive (3 TB Western Digital) to store my iTunes files (so I no longer need to partition). The new Time Machine is my wi-fu hub.
The problem: I need to retrieve the 300 gb of audio files that are on my old partitioned Time Machine, and move them to my new WD external drive. I've already set up the new Time Machine as my wi-fi broadcaster, and de-activated the old Time Machine.
(I had tried to move the files previous to setting up the new Time Machine, but I realized after de-activating it that I wasn't as thorough as I thought, so I need to go back and move them again.)
I've tried to re-connect to the old Time Machine using an ethernet cable, but when I do, it recognizes it as my wi-fi hub, and it screws up my network - it suddenly allows me access to the old Time Machine, but blocks access to the new WD external drive.
So in a nutshell - I need to be able to connect the old Time Machine to my laptop (a Macbook running OS X 10.7.5) and have my new network see it as just an external drive - so I can then move the 300 GB of audio files directly on to my new WD external drive.
Any thoughts on how I can do this?

Why not connect both drives to the computer, turn off the wi-fi, and then copy the files over. Or you can use Disk Utility/Restore to move the files. See the note - it will erase the WD drive.
You can then set things back to the way you want them. You should have more than one back up as hard drives do fail. In this case, you could use a clone and keep it on the WD drive.
Clone  - Carbon Copy Cloner          (Often recommended as it has more features than some others)
    Clone – Data Backup
    Clone – Deja Vu
    Clone  - SuperDuper
    Clone - Synk

  • How do I remove information I put on my new Mac via an external hard drive?

I got a new Mac (Mountain Lion). I'd been backing up my older Mac with an external HD. I used this same HD to transfer my info to the new Mac. Now it looks like I have 2 different user accounts. While I was in the user account that has the information from the external HD I did a system restore but it didn't seem to do anything. How can I remove the information from the external HD that I put on my new Mac???

According to the SONOS site is should just play your music that is in iTunes. Do you have the SONOS system already? Does it see and play your iTunes music.
If so just insert a CD into your system and import the music into iTunes. That should do it.
Before you do this to all 500 CD's I'd so it to one or two and make sure SONOS plays the tracks and they sound OK.
Post back if you have any other questions.
    regards

  • Just bought a new macbook pro, how do I transfer files from my pc to my mac using a network?

I have been reading on the apple website, and the best option for me is to use a network, I understand how to set it all up on a pc, but I have no idea what it means where it says the bit in bold. (point 3)
Make sure that both computers are turned on and connected to the Internet.
In the Finder on your Mac, choose Connect to Server from the Go menu to open the window.
Type your PC's network address in the Server Address text box using this format: smb://ServerName/ShareName, or select the name of your PC in this window (if it appears).
    Click Connect.
Enter your PC's workgroup name, your user name, and your password when prompted, then select the volume or folder you wish to access.
Your PC volume should appear on your Mac Desktop.
Open the volume and drag and drop files directly from it to anywhere on your Mac.
When finished, drag your PC volume to the Trash to unmount it.

You'd have to give us some more information in regard to the inputs of your display.
Generally, you should be able to plug your current PC into one input (DVI most likely) and then the Mac mini into another (HDMI) then flip between the inputs on the monitor via the on-screen menu.
