How do I transfer my data to my new IMAC from my old mac's hard drive?

When switching to my new IMac, I transferred my data, but the data that it transfered from was my old Mac's original hard drive. How do I transfer the data from my 2nd hard drive which has all my up-to-date info?

I believe that you are running into the Master/Slave issue when there are two or more HDs on the same channel.
As per the Knowledge Base article on How to use FireWire target disk mode
Tip: FireWire Target Disk Mode works on internal ATA drives only. Target Disk Mode only connects to the master ATA drive on the Ultra ATA bus. It will not connect to Slave ATA, ATAPI or SCSI drives.
When you disconnected the original drive, which was the Master, and changed the new drive's position on the cable, which had been the Slave, you made it the Master, which then gave you access to it.
You may be more successful if you use Migration Assistant if you erase and reinstall OS X. It is located on your Intel in Apps/Utilities. Be sure to use Kappy's post linked above for an intelligent move of the things that are safe to move from PPC to Intel Macs.

  • How can I transfer app data to my new iPhone from my old one?

Just upgraded to a new iPhone. I have lost ALL my Shazzammed music and Grocery IQ data. I would REALly like to get that info on my new phone. If not, I'd rather have my old one!
BTW--I have the actual apps and all my contacts etc. bc I did a successful transfer/sync from iTunes. It's just the DATA that was part of my apps that is missing. Thx.

I have an oder Ipod shuffle with many songs loaded on it. How can I transfer ths songs to a new computer since the old computer is no longer available?

I had the same problem with my iPad, i couldn't get the newer version of itunes because the computer was too old and my iPad couldnt sync with the old itunes. I got a PC from school a few months later so that solved the problem for me. Unfortunately i don't think there would be a program to put your music on your iPod, iTunes should be the only way to transfer files to Apple devices. What operating system are you running and what version of it is it?

  • Migration of data, does it erase it from the old Mac?

When using the Migration Assistant does it actually transfer data to a new Mac, erasing it from the old Mac or does it copy the data from one Mac to another leaving the information on both machines?
    Thanks.

Thanks for the feedback and reward. Good computing.

  • HT201250 old data transferred to new computer via time machine, is external hard drive still usable

I set up my new macbook from an old macbook via time machine and an external WD Harddrive.
The setup partitioned my macbook to two user id's, now I need to back up.
The old user id is backing up everything again and the new user id wants to create a new backup to my WD Harddrive like it is not used.
I don't believe that my WD was partitioned.
Help!  How can I continue using my WD and backup both user id information without losing anything?

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
When you turn on the new iMac for the first time, Setup Assistant will ask you to restore a backup, so connect the external disk and follow steps to restore all your files to your new iMac. Your new Mac will have the same settings and programs as your old computer.
In other cases, I would recommend to restore the whole backup without using Migration Assistant or Setup Assistant, but a Late 2012 iMac uses a special OS X build, so the OS X version that you're using on your old Mac won't work on the new one. • How to setup new notebook from HP laptop with bad hard drive

Got kids a new Hp laptop in June.  The hard drive has been getting progressively louder and is obviously about to go, with a blue screen error forcing a roll back of the computer.  I have done a full backup to an external hard drive and I am returning this for a replacement.  Should I make a recovery disc and reinstall from the disc when I get the new laptop, or should I just plug in the external hard drive and transfer the files over?  A guy at work says using the recovery disc is the way to go, because it would reinstall Norton and all the other programs we have installed., but I thought the external hard drive backup was supposed to be the way to do this
    This question was solved.
    View Solution.

Not sure I understand the question. "Should I make a recovery disc and reinstall from the disc when I get the new laptop, or should I just plug in the external hard drive and transfer the files over?" Usually HP replaces only the hdd.
If you are receiving a new hdd to put it the laptop, yes you need to burn the Recovery Disks to reinstall Windows & original software on it. You can then use your backup to restore files.
IF the full backup you are referring to is a complete System Image, it can be used to restore Windows, programs and all files, etc on the new hdd. You do need to also burn the Repair CD to boot from and restore the System Image on the new hdd.(I would still burn a Recovery DVD set to have as a fallback)
If you are receiving an entire laptop replacement it will have everything installed on it. You will just have to restore your personal files from the backup

  • How do I transfer my data back to my iPod from icloud after my device was restored?

I had to restore my iPod because it got stuck in recovery mode. Now, I am trying to figure out how to get all of my data back on my iPod from my icloud backups.

    Hi,
If you are using the iTunes command File>Transfer Purchases from iPod, only purchased music is transferred to iTunes from your iPod.
    Hope this helps!

  • How do I transfer my data to my new macbook pro using an external hard drive?

I've already set up my new MacBook Pro is my issue. It asked me if I'd like to "Migrate" my stuff or use an external hard drive etc but at the time I didn't transfer my data from my old MacBook yet. I was going to manually do it later as I had to wait for my External hard drive to back my old Mac up. Now it's that time and I have no idea how to do it. I believe I've researched best of my ability.
I feel like I'm asking a pretty dumb question. If I were to just drag all my programs out like my Adobe Suite on to my new macbook pro would that work? I feel like that's just too easy and incorrect. Please and thank you.

The Adobe suite can be downloaded free, you dont have to copy it at all, under standard CS6 Adobe rules, if you own the suite, you get 2 computers "activated at any one time"  Make sure, if youre not using the older computer, you deactivate the software under the HELP menu in Adobe.
format the new drive in disk utility ......APPLICATIONS.....UTILITIES.....DISK UTILITIES.......select the external drive and format (if its new and empty!!!) under the ERASE button with Mac OSX extended journaled
copy all your important stuff from older computer , pics, files, documents, personal anything.
most of you apps, i ASSUME you bought in the (other than Adobe software, or Office suite, etc etc,..... obviously) in the MAC APP store, so you can reload them on the new computer without copying them , makes things very easy......just open APP STORE, and download what you already bought.
really the only important things , is copy all important work files, documents, pictures, personal ABC...XYZ......  obviously.
the migration is about emails, contacts, etc etc etc, also data, just because you passed it by at the time doesnt mean you still cant do it,    go to the SEARCH at menu at top and type in MIGRATION ASSISTANT  to do it again , since you passed it by at first .
the only thing you NEED / SHOULD copy is all your personal stuff........Applications need to be reinstall from either ONLINE download,.......or from the MAC APP STORE,........  you cant just copy the apps over (in most cases) and toss them onto the new computer
Nahh, there are no dumb questions, just dumb mistakes because you DIDNT ask any questions, and we all make those here and there.

  • How do I transfer all the information in my iTunes on my old mac book to my new mac book pro so I can sync my devices to the new machine with erasing all the data my iPhone and iPad?

I have just bought a new mac book pro and want to use this machine as the main computer to which I will sync my iPhone and iPad.
How do I transfer the information within iTunes on my old mac book so when I connect the devices the new machine will not erase all my data?
    Thank you

Copy the entire iTunes folder within the music folder on your old Mac to the music folder on your new Mac.
You can use an external hard disc for the transfer, or you can connect the computers together using Firewire Target Disc Mode as explained here:  http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1661

  • How do i transfer game data to a new computer?

I am moving in to a new laptop and want to transfer everything to it.  I can move music and videos, photos and apps.  I want to keep my iPod setup the same way (preferences and folders) as well as keep my saved game data.  I was able to download past apps from the iTunes store as past purchases, but this does not restore my game saves for apps.  How do I transfer these two forms of information so I can stop using my first computer?

    - Make sure the computer is authorized for the accounts used on the iPod.
    - After everything is on the new computer, connect the iPod to the computer and make a backup by right clciking on the iPod under Devices in iTunes and select Back Up. The backup contains app data and oother things by not synced items like apps themselves, music, psynced photos.
    - Restore the iPod from that backup.

  • How Can I Transfer My Data to my new iPhone?

Currently, I have an iPhone 4, and will most likely get the new one when it comes out in the fall. If I sold my 4 before buying the new one, how would I transfer my contacts, pictures, etc. onto the new one? Do I just keep my old SIM Card and put it in the new one?

iPhones don't store any data on SIM cards.
You need to backup your current phone either to iCloud or iTunes, and sync your contacts with either an app on your computer or cloud service (iCloud, Gmail, Yahoo, Hotmail, etc.)
When you get your new phone (Thanks for not calling it the "iPhone 5"), you'll restore that backup and sync as part of the activation process.

    Hello:
Why is there no disc for Final Cut Pro X?
    Is there one coming?
Can and how do I move the downloaded application from my old machine to a new computer?
    Thanks!

You purchase FCX in the Mac App Store, there is no disc. You can reload past purchases under your account within the app store. You should also be regularly backing up your system
