How do I turn off Sync without iTunes deleting all the songs on my iPod!

Well that's basically my question. I want to keep all the songs that are already there, but from this point on just add new ones manually. When I unchecked the Sync box it wiped out my iPod. Thanks in advance for any help.
Powerbook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

You need to turn off automatic sync before you delete all your tracks from iTunes. If you don't, then you need to prevent the iPod from synching when you connect:
While connecting the iPod to the computer, hold down the Command and Option keys on a Mac. This should stop the iPod from auto synching with iTunes and the iPod will appear in the source list. Wait until you are sure the iPod has mounted, and that it will not auto sync and then you can let the keys go. This may take between 3 and 25 seconds depending on your computer. Then you can set iTunes to manual synchronization.
Of course, this won't help if your iPod has already had the tracks removed. But you'll know what to do next time.
Regards.

  • Why are my past purchases gone? So, I'm afraid to buy any tunes because once my Ipod syncs up - it deletes all the songs in my ipod.

I have been using the itunes store with gift cards and purchases this past year.  All the ones I had from gift cards got erased from my ipod when I started purchasing tunes and it got synced up.  I spke with ppl at Itunes store and couldn't advise me.  So, I'm afraid to buy any tunes because once my Ipod syncs up - I'm afraid all the songs in my ipod will get erased. I just checked and don't see any of my past purchases in my library.  What is happening to all my songs???

All of your music should be on your computer and should be included in your regular backup of your computer.

How do I completely clear my ipod music, and how can I solve the syncing problem?

Sync works the same way it always has, connect the device, select the content desired to sync and sync.
All the media should be in iTunes already, iDevices are not and have never been backup devices.
If this is a new computer, move the content from the old computer to the new computer.

  • HELP! After installing iTunes 7, all the songs on my iPod disappeared!

I dont know if othe people are having this problem too but it really *****!
I downloaded iTunes 7 a while back because i had no choice, i wouldnt be able to buy songs/music videos from it if i didnt.
    It installed a new iTunes
    then a new iPod upgrade.
A day later, i pluged in the iPod.
It asked me if i wanted to upgrade it with gapless playback because i thought it would save space or something.
so i put yes, and let it do it over night since it took so long..
then the next thing i knew when i woke up, is that all the songs on my iPod were GONE!
I even plugged it back into the computer and iTunes said there were no songs on my iPod! or videos or anything!
I rechecked everything and it said the iPod was still 98% full (because i had like 4,300 songs on it) and only 2mb of free space...
I checked iTunes and it said that the things were taking up space were 10% "pics" and 89% "other files".... so i know itunes can see the files there..
    I KNOW THEY'RE STILL THERE!
CAN SOMEONE HELP ME GET THEM BACK?!?!
I know it was the gapless playback thing... is there any way to undo it??
Please... someone help me... i cant just back up all my songs... because i reformatted my computer a while ago too.. so i have no backed up songs... and a lot are from other friends too!

IF all songs on the ipod are also on the PC
    Just restore the ipod
    If Not on the PC
You will have to TRY and rep[air the ipods database with yamipod. This way is not full proof, but its the only option you have since you have not backed up http://www.yamipod.com/main/modules/docs/help/corruptedipod.php

  • ITunes deleted all the music on my ipod - help!

I purchased a fourth generation black and white screen 20GB ipod that had some music on it.
I've been listening to the music for about a week without bothering to connect up to my computer.
Today I installed the software that came with the ipod and updated to the newest versions of iTunes and Quicktime.
I connected my ipod when it told me to.
No music appeared in iTunes and all the music has been deleted from the ipod, the ipod menus for music are empty.
When I disconnect my ipod I now have no music to listen to.
Where did it go and how can I get it back?
    Thank you.

You might not bea ble to get it back. Invest $100 on itunes cards!

  • How do i turn off sounds within itunes, such as the download complete sound and other sounds added with 11.11.1

some of the sounds added with the latest addition of itunes are really annoying and suprising, especially when listening to music. how do i turn them off?

What really cheeses me off here is that Apple isn't allowing users enough customization.  With each update of iTunes (and the OS and iOS) we're forced to give up something that worked well for the way we want to use the app and make do with fewer (and lamer) options.  If Apple keeps this up, they're going to start losing customers fast.  I mean if this isn't fixed soon, I'm pretty sure I'm going to give up on iTunes, and then I'll probably go ahead and get a Galaxy when I need to replace my iPhone.
What I don't understand about how they won't let users delete the list of available podcasts now is why?  How is this making it a better program?  I can understand that not all users are capable enough to right-click on a feed and select "Show all available episodes", so I can see why they want the complete list to be the default (and, surprise, it already was).  But to not give users the option to delete that list?  It's inconsiderate because it makes navigating feeds with a large back catalogue really frustrating.  I'm flabbergasted that no one at Apple considered all the podcast feeds that keep hundreds of episodes available when they removed this feature.  It smacks of rank incompetence.
What improvement were they trying to make here anyway?  There was nothing wrong to my mind about how podcasts were managed in previous versions.  Whatever improvement they were trying to make here, they should have realized that many users would at least want the option to keep things the way they were.
And reverting to a previous version is no solution.  I can't sync my iPhone with the new iOS without this update, and (while I do have some issues--specifically how you can't play podcasts in the Music app anymore) I do like the new iOS.

  • Since ios6, itunes deleted all my songs on my ipod and on my computer!

I have itunes set to organize my library for me. I found that for some reason after ios6 update, when I synced my ipod, all of the music got removed from it. However, at the time, I could still play it on the computer.
When I looked into the itunes folder, I found that when I played a song on my computer, itunes would copy that song from its original location in the itunes>music> (artist name) folder to another folder it created in itunes>(artist name). In other words, it was moving everything out of the music subfolder into the general itunes folder. Everything that it moved would subsequently sync fine to the ipod.
So, thinking I had the solution, I told itunes to consolidate my files in my library. Apprently bad idea. It did copy all of the files from within the music folder out into the general itunes folder, but somewhere in the copy, it must have lost the files, because now most of them are no longer on the computer either. When I go to play them in itunes now, there is an exclamation point. Itunes deleted my music and instead, I have folders with artists name, and a placeholder of sorts where the file is supposed to be with a little x over it (Ihave windows 7, btw). Nor are the files in their original folders in the music subfolder. I never touched any of this music manually. I was trusting itunes to do its thing with keeping my library organized and all.
It did manage to copy about 1000 of them just fine, but all the rest of my music is gone from my computer! I did also restore the ipod, which seemed to sync fine after the restore, but again, because of the now missing music on my computer, obviously those files did not sync. Help. What happenned????

Reset didn't work at first until I unchecked the 'sych only checked songs and videos' in iTunes, clicked apply and then rechecked it and clicked sync and it worked.
    Thanks.

  • Turning off sync without loosing music

After a year of managing my own music transfers I made the mistake of using iTunes sync to give my iPod a fresh reload to make sure all my edits to the library were up to date. Now I can’t turn off sync without iTunes threatening to erase everything on the iPod. As a temporary patch I’ve got iTunes set to only sync checked items but it’s really lame to have to trick iTunes into leaving my iPod alone. Anyone know how to turn the feature off without wiping the iPod?

#@!&%$# ... using my "sync on checked" trick wiped everything without warning. I guess I got my wish and I can go back to manually managing the iPod. I HATE iTUNES! It's deliberately crippled in so many ways ...

  • Will all the songs on my ipod be wiped off if my itunes is now empty?

My lap top's hard drive crashed and i've lost all the data that was ever stored on it, including all my music and itunes. i've since reinstalled itunes but obviously have no music within it. if i reconnect my ipod which currently has all my old music on it, will it sync with the new itunes and cause all of the old music to be wiped from the ipod? any answers on this would be much appreciated!
    Jo

Connect your iPod to your computer. If it is set to update automatically you'll get a message that it is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, press "Cancel". Pressing "Erase and Sync" will irretrievably remove all the songs from your iPod. Your iPod should appear in the iTunes source list from where you can change the update setting to manual and use your iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it. Also when using most of the utilities listed below your iPod needs to be enabled for disc use, changing to manual update will do this by default. Check the "manually manage music and videos" box in Summary then press the Apply button: Managing content manually on iPod
You can also use a keyboard command to prevent your iPod auto-syncing with iTunes. While connecting the iPod to the computer on Windows with iTunes 7 installed hold down the Control and Alt keys (or Shift + Ctrl keys in older versions). This will stop the iPod from auto-syncing with iTunes and the iPod will appear in the source list. Wait until you are sure the iPod has mounted, and that it will not auto sync and then you can let the keys go. This may take between 20 to 30 seconds depending on your computer: iTunes 7 Keyboard Shortcuts for Windows
Once you are safely connected there are a few things you can do to restore your iTunes from the iPod. If you have any iTMS purchases the transfer of purchased content from the iPod to authorised computers was introduced with iTunes 7. A paragraph on it has been added to this article: Transfer iTunes Store purchases using iPod
The transfer of non iTMS content such as songs imported from CD is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod. However there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod. You'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer movies, videos, photos, podcasts and games as well. Have a look at the web pages and documentation, this is just a small selection of what's available, they are generally quite straightforward. You can also read reviews of some of them here: Wired News - Rescue Your Stranded Tunes

    iPod2PC Windows Only
    iGadget Windows Only
    iDump Windows Only
    YamiPod Mac and Windows Versions
    Music Rescue Mac & Windows
    iPodCopy Mac and Windows Versions
There is also a manual method of accessing the iPod's hard drive and copying songs back to iTunes on Windows or a Mac. The procedure is a bit involved and won't recover playlists but if you're interested it's available at this link: Two-way Street: Moving Music Off the iPod
Whichever of these retrieval methods you choose, keep your iPod in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync. I would also advise that you get yourself an external hard drive and back your stuff up, relying on an iPod as your sole backup is not a good idea and external drives are comparatively inexpensive these days, you can get loads of storage for a reasonable outlay.

  • All the songs on my ipod shuffle were deleted because of auto sync. Can the songs be recovered anywhere or are they gone?

I plugged my ipod shuffle first generation into my work computer (PC) and itunes deleted all the songs because of auto sync. I had checked the box to not sync with the itunes library because there were no songs in the library. But I guess auto sync was still turned on, and it "synced" all the songs off of my ipod. Are these songs recoverable anywhere or are they just gone?
    Thanks,
    Frustrated User

The 1st gen (and 2nd gen) iPod shuffle does not have a mode where it automatically syncs to your iTunes library.  It uses manual loading all the time (or the Autofill feature).  So iTunes did not delete its content because of automatic syncing.
However, it can only be used with one iTunes library at a time.  So, if you connect it to a different computer (with a different iTunes library), its existing content is erased.  You should get a warning so that you can back out.
If you started using the shuffle with a different iTunes library, the songs that were on it are gone.
NOTE:  The 3rd and 4th gen shuffles are different, and work more like the other "big" iPods.  If it is set for Manually manage music, you can connect it to a different iTunes library without erasing the existing content.

  • How can I turn off genius in iTunes 10.5.3 (3)

How can I turn off Genius in iTunes 10.5.3  under Lion 10.7.3 (other than disconnecting from the internet). It is no longer an option in the Store menu and although I can hide that playlist on the left through parental controls, the atom symbol is still present in the lower right of the window available to generate a list from a selected song. Thank you.

I have the option to turn it off. What version of iTunes are you using? I have the latest iTunes. Have you tried signing out of the store?

  • How can I turn off iCloud without losing my documents?

How can I turn off iCloud without losing my documents?
When I try to sign out Icloud I get the warning (( If you turn off Documents & Data, all documents stored in Icloud will be removed from this Mac))
I don,t want to remove my document on my computer, what should I do?

If you are refering to documents such as Pages and Numbers files....
The only way around this is to "save as" you icloud documents using the associated app to a local folder on your mac.  Then turn off icloud.
Of course, when you sign off of icloud, the docs are removed from the mac, but remain in icloud.  In the future when you sign back in, the documents are available to you again.
Oh, and the icloud documents are also stored locally in ...
    ~/Library/Mobile Documents
Note that Library in the user's home folder is now hidden, so you'll have to set Finder to view hidden files.
The Mobile Documents folder has subfolder where copies of the doc/data files are stored.
You can move these files to another folder to save them.
